Digital assets are generally regarded as one of the most valuable assets for an organization. When they are captured for ransom purposes, a serious problem arises, and ransomware is responsible for this. When ransomware gets onto a computer or other electronic device, the data on it is encrypted, made inaccessible, or taken away until a ransom is paid. The culprits behind these activities release and disseminate new and sophisticated variants of illicit wealth and notorious practices. Hardware and antivirus software that detect intrusions are not a permanent solution, as hackers can bypass them easily. After ransomware has been executed on …

This comment synthesizes various historical aspects of motor vehicle infrastructure in the United States. The network of issues at play involves centuries of public policy decisions made at the local, state, and federal level, which twentieth century legal innovations hastened and curdled into the car culture we are all a part of today. The public authority is the paradigm of these legal innovations, but it has outlived its usefulness in the face climate change and burgeoning issues relating to urbanism.

Fishing Communities And Public Participation In Federal Decisionmaking: A Case Study Of Community Opposition To The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion Project, Stephanie Showalter Otts

Ocean and Coastal Law Journal

In debates surrounding coastal restoration projects, the word “community” is heard frequently. Coastal restoration projects have the potential to affect a wide range of communities, both those which are place-based as well as communities of practice that are not geographically bound. However, the lack of a single, accepted definition of community can lead to faulty assumptions about who is being represented in policy debates which can undermine efforts to build consensus and support for coastal restoration efforts. This Article presents a case study of community conflicts and public participation surrounding a large, controversial coastal restoration project in Louisiana—the Mid-Barataria Sediment …

The New Management Accounting Ecosystem: A Retrospective View And Path To The Future, Chris Akroyd, Kevin E. Dow, Andrea Drake, Jeffrey Wong

Our goal is to encourage more cross-disciplinary research that provides a better understanding of the ecosystem in which management accounting practitioners operate. We encourage researchers to submit studies to “Advances in …

Rayed Arcs And The ‘Rory Bory Aylis’: Primary World Aurorae And Tolkien’S 'Father Christmas Letters', Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

Previous research has demonstrated that Tolkien was well-versed and well-practiced in the use of etiological myths in his world-building activities. But we should remember that Middle-earth was not his sole Secondary World; in fact, one of the most interesting can be found at Tolkien’s version of the North Pole, in his Father Christmas Letters. As might be expected of Tolkien the impressive collection of astronomy in the letters is largely scientifically accurate, especially concerning the aurora borealis, the northern lights. This paper explores the instances of auroral references (in text and illustration) in the Father Christmas Letters and connects …

Firm Reaction To Geopolitical Crises: Evidence From The Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Asif Ui Alam, Erik Devos, Zifeng Feng

Hunt Institute Working Paper Series

This paper investigates corporate announcements related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict of S&P 500 firms. We observe that firms withdrawing from Russia or suspending operations possess higher cash levels. Additionally, firms with more cash seem to announce withdrawals or suspensions more promptly. These findings suggest that cash levels are pivotal in how firms respond to geopolitical events. While cash does not seem influential when firms announce donations due to the conflict, it does affect the speed of such announcements. Social media also appear to play a significant role. Examining investor reactions to donation or withdrawal/suspension announcements, we report negative returns surrounding …
