Pollen Germination In Relation To Group Size, H. W. Beams, R. L. King

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In recent experiments involving the germination of the pollen grains of Vinca rosea, it was observed that relatively poor germination occurred in isolated grains and among those grains aggregated in small groups (Beams and King, 1944). These preliminary observations seemed to warrant a further study of this problem. Accordingly, experiments were designed to determine some of the effects of population density on the percentage germination of these cells.

Many cultural histories have been written of Utah, but not one of Weber County. The purpose of this thesis is to develop the history of drama in Weber County. Particular interest is given to the stage and its evolution. Also, I include the outstanding leaders of this art, because they are the builders of this history. The hypothesis is that the present-day drama owes much to our pioneers of Weber County. This thesis is written in commemoration of these pioneers for our Centennial Year, 1947.

"The problem of this investigation involves the determination of the coefficients of thermal expansion of mine rocks, and the relationship of porosity, permeability, and consecutive temperature changes to the permanent elongation of those rocks. One of the major problems in mining today is that of the analysis of the action of exposed mine rock under changes of temperature. The immediate cause of a fall of ground in a mining excavation is due to the fact that some part of the mass that falls has been subjected to a stress beyond the strength of the rock. "This work had two main objectives: (1) The construction of an electrolytic cell for the production of fluorine, (2) the preparation of some organic compounds containing fluorine. This research was undertaken because of the growing importance of fluorine chemistry, particularly in the field or organic chemistry. Due to the extreme activity of fluorine, it is theoretically possible to prepare many times more fluorine-containing organic compounds than there are known organic compounds today.
