Book Reviews: From The Editor, Justin Scholes

The Utah English Journal

What is the place of books in a world full of diverse, powerful media? With students’ access to and affinity for movies, cartoons, video games, and social media, what can books offer? Of course, you and I have ample responses to these questions, and yet, I wonder if you ever feel the way that I have felt at times—like I am competing with these other media, like many of my students need convincing that books are still relevant.

Book Review: Accountable: The True Story Of A Racist Social Media Account And The Teenagers Whose Lives It Changed, Lisa Jones

The Utah English Journal

In California, a boy named Charles creates an Instagram account with the express purpose of getting a laugh out of his friends, and he does so through shockingly racist content about their own classmates. Just over a dozen boys follow the account, some interacting more than others. Meanwhile, through a mutual friend, word gets out to the girls being targeted, and soon the entire school is caught up in the fallout. What starts as a “simple joke” leads to reconciliation meetings gone wrong, riots, violence, and national headlines. Accountable: The True Story of a Racist Social Media Account and the …

Book Review: Next Level Grammar For A Digital Age: Teaching With Social Media And Online Tools For Rhetorical Understanding And Critical Creation, Val O'Bryan

The Utah English Journal

Social media surrounds us. Students don’t often stop and think about the underlying structures and rhetoric that make up social media posts and memes. However, social media is a landscape rich with opportunities to teach critical digital literacy. This forward- thinking book explains how to teach digital language and provides tools for teaching practical grammar in the classroom, focusing on Internet language. Crovitz, Devereaux, and Moran explain how students can practice using language deliberately by applying rhetorical grammar with digital tools. The authors provide numerous original strategies, prompts, and questions that leverage students’ existing skills, not to mention their interest …

Physical And Structural Properties Of Porous Kaolin/Co-Ferrite For Water Treatment, Wasan Ziedan, Mukhlis Ismail, Wafaa Hussain

Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology

Aqueous solutions with heavy metals such as Cr (VI), Pb, and Cd (II) can have an adverse effect on human health because of their toxicity. As a result, it is important to remove these heavy metals from the aquatic environment to save the human healthy. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) used in this research to characterize cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles and confirm the structure of Co-Fe2O4. These particles were used to make porous samples and burned at 1050 °C in mixtures of (0, 3, 5, 7, and 10) wt.% of cobalt ferrite …

Water scarcity is the most imperative predicament that concerns the population. In this research, a roller kiln (RK) industrial solid waste was used in the adsorption of phosphate ions from aqueous solutions thus converting a waste to wealth through aiding in serving as a water treatment application. The RK waste was produced from an Egyptian factory with a fow rate of million tons/ day. Surface characterization for this solid waste was performed including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray difraction (XRD), X-ray fuorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), zeta potential (ZP), and particle size distribution (PSD). Based on the kinetics and …

Cryptic Bacterial Pathogens Of Diatoms Peak During Senescence Of A Winter Diatom Bloom, Laura Branscombe, Ellen L. Harrison, Zhi Yi Daniel Choong, Courtney Swink, Matthew Keys, Claire Widdicombe, William H. Wilson, Michael Cunliffe, Katherine Helliwell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Summary.Diatoms are globally abundant microalgae that form extensive blooms in aquatic ecosystems. Certain bacteria behave antagonistically towards diatoms, killing or inhibiting their growth. Despite their crucial implications to diatom bloom and population health, knowledge of diatom antagonists in the environment is fundamentally lacking. We report systematic characterisation of the diversity and seasonal dynamics of bacterial antagonists of diatoms via plaque assay sampling in the Western English Channel, where diatoms frequently bloom. Unexpectedly, peaks in detection did not occur during characteristic spring diatom blooms, but coincided with a winter bloom of Coscinodiscus, suggesting that these bacteria likely influence distinct diatom host …

Microplastic Trapping Efficiency And Hydrodynamics In Model Coral Reefs: A Physical Experimental Investigation, F Mendrik, Rc Houseago, Cr Hackney, Dr Parsons

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs, are vulnerable to microplastic pollution input from proximal riverine and shoreline sources. However, deposition, retention, and transport processes are largely unevaluated, especially in relation to hydrodynamics. For the first time, we experimentally investigate the retention of biofilmed microplastic by branching 3D printed corals (staghorn coral Acropora genus) under various unidirectional flows (U = {0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30} ms −1) and canopy densities (15 and 48 corals m −2). These variables are found to drive trapping efficiency, with 79–98% of microplastics retained in coral canopies across the experimental duration at high flow velocities …

Waste In Relation To Populism: The Case Of Tunis, Aya Khadija Guen Feb 2024

Waste In Relation To Populism: The Case Of Tunis, Aya Khadija Guen

Senior Theses

Throughout this body of work, I explore the challenges faced regarding proper waste management and its interconnectedness in political developments. Specifically, I examine this subject in the case of the greater metropolitan area of Tunis. Having lived in Tunisia each summer since I was born, I have seen the many stages of the country’s waste issue. I came to my research to discover the conditions that have led to illegal dumpsites and Tunisia’s growing waste management issue. The waste management sector regressed post-2011 revolution. With this, I have always assumed that the waste issue is intertwined with the country’s political …

Fostering Dissent: Analyzing Russian Rhetorical Strategies In Fomenting A Negative Image Of The Eu In Serbia, Suzan L. Juncaj

Senior Theses

As authoritarian regimes work to manipulate perceptions of democracy and frame themselves as an alternative, an in-depth analysis of image building is necessary to advance our understanding of world politics. Russia has served as a perpetrator in Serbia’s increasingly negative perceptions of the European Union. Through tactics such as political rhetoric, demonstrated through the Russian Foreign Ministry, Russia has carried out an information campaign with the intent to shift public attitudes towards the EU. This thesis evaluates the rhetorical strategies used by the Russian Foreign Ministry to project a negative image of the EU whilst illuminating an ideal image of …
