Opening Keynote: From 'Publish Or Perish' To Purpose And People: Going Together On Research Assessment Reform, Lily Kong

FORCE 2026

Universities hold a unique position as the brain trusts of society — creating knowledge, countering misinformation, and catalysing innovation that drives societal progress. Yet the cultures of "publish or perish" and competitive rankings have led academia to focus on certain metrics, and in so doing, chase misplaced goals. This has resulted in some misdirections: misconduct, data manipulation, mistreatment of early-career researchers, and a troubling misalignment between what scholars pursue and what society needs. How can we begin to rethink research impact beyond standard metrics to embrace both academic excellence and societal contribution? In the spirit of FORCE 2026's theme, Prof …

Rendering Live Data In Pre-Recorded Video Using Dynamic 3d Topology Extraction, Nikita Agarwal

Defensive Publications Series

This technology creates a way to show live, real-time information—such as current traffic or crowd sizes—directly inside a video that was recorded in the past.

The system works by following these steps:

  • It analyzes a regular video to figure out the 3D shape of the environment.
  • At the same time, it finds live data for the specific location shown in that video.
  • It turns that live data into 3D images and places them into the video so they stay in the right spot, even if the camera moves.
  • It uses depth sensing to make sure the live data is hidden …

A Multi-Phase Pipeline For Query Deconstruction, Evidence Gathering, And Narrative Composition, Nathaniel Grabaskas, Levi Zombori, Megan Pusey, Michael Bausor, Liam Roche

Defensive Publications Series

Some information retrieval systems may provide fragmented or surface-level answers for complex queries that can benefit from reasoning beyond simple keyword matching. This describes systems and methods for a multi-phase knowledge processing pipeline. The pipeline can operate in discrete stages: a strategy phase may deconstruct a user’s query to generate a research plan, a research phase may gather and synthesize source-grounded evidence into a structured dossier, and a consolidation phase can compose a final narrative answer from the dossier’s contents. This modular architecture can separate query planning, evidence gathering, and presentation. The process can transform a complex user need into …

Dynamic Per-Prefix Micro-Loop Avoidance Timer Computation In Segment Routing Networks, Anonymous Jun 2026

Dynamic Per-Prefix Micro-Loop Avoidance Timer Computation In Segment Routing Networks, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are disclosed for computing dynamic, per-prefix micro-loop avoidance timer values in a segment routing (SR) network running an interior gateway protocol (IGP). For each destination prefix, a router pre-computes a timer based on topology-derived convergence estimates including hop count, per-node link state protocol data unit (LSP) processing time, shortest path first (SPF) computation delay, link delay, and forwarding hardware programming delay. The per-prefix timer values are grouped into configurable-granularity buckets with random jitter and stored in memory during normal operation. Upon detection of a topology event, each pre-computed timer is activated and gates a two-stage route installation in which …

Biologically Informed Negative Samplingfor Antibody Chain Pairing Classification, Ishita Singh Jun 2026

Biologically Informed Negative Samplingfor Antibody Chain Pairing Classification, Ishita Singh

Computer Science Senior Theses

Antibody heavy and light chain (H/L) pairing is fundamental to antigen recognition and stability. While single-cell sequencing preserves native pairing information, widely used bulk repertoire and spatial transcriptomics platforms do not, motivating the need for efficient ML methods to infer H/L pairing. Training a binary classifier for this task faces the methodological challenge of a lack of true biological negatives, since natural selection eliminates B cells with incompatible H/L pairs.

In this thesis, I introduce a biologically informed negative sampling strategy for H/L pairing classification, drawing on known V-gene biases in heavy and light chain pairing. Pseudo-negatives are constructed by …

Mimic: A Multimodal Dataset For Affective Incongruity In Video, Ethan M. Baird

Computer Science Senior Theses

This thesis investigates the computational challenges of constructing a database for affective incongruity, exploring the difficulties in automating the collection of contradictory affective states. Capturing these incongruities is essential for advancing Vision-Language Models (VLMs) and sentiment analysis, which struggle to interpret signals deviating from basic emotional archetypes. Curating non-congruent affect provides the data necessary for models to navigate complex social contexts, which is critical for applications like automated Audio Description (AD) for the visually impaired and nuanced Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). To capture these signals, two distinct methodologies were employed. The first utilized a tripartite decomposition of video data, isolating textual, …

Bullying, Early Sexual Debut, And Sexual Health Behaviors Among Adolescents In New York City, Valentina I. Ramirez Jun 2026

Bullying, Early Sexual Debut, And Sexual Health Behaviors Among Adolescents In New York City, Valentina I. Ramirez

Dissertations and Theses

Adolescent sexual and reproductive health remains a critical public health priority in the United States, particularly given the persistent burden of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young people. Adolescents and young adults account for a disproportionate share of STI cases, reflecting ongoing gaps in prevention, early detection, treatment, and equitable access to sexual health care and services. These patterns are shaped not only by individual behaviors but also by broader social, structural, and developmental contexts that influence adolescents’ opportunities to engage in preventive sexual health care.

This dissertation examined associations between early sexual debut, experiences of bullying, and …

“I Was Well Informed. It Was A Great Advantage”: Pre-Arrival Information Seeking, Information Intelligence, And Immigrants’ Settlement, Nafiz Z. Shuva, Paulette Rothbauer

Publications and Research

This study reports on the role of pre-arrival information seeking and informed decision making in the settlement experiences of Bangladeshi immigrants in Canada. Despite the importance of immigrants in shaping Canada’s future in innovation, economy, and population, this research shows a significant mismatch between immigrants’ expectations and their actual settlement experiences, particularly in terms of their employment. This mismatch can lead to depression, frustration, and anxiety, affecting integration into Canadian society. While there has been a recent increase in immigrants’ settlement information behavior research in LIS, most focus on post-arrival information needs and seeking. Research findings of this study contribute …

Reliability-Aware Mixture-Of-Agents For Robust Ai-Generated Image Detection, Jake Jump, Yu-Wing Tai Jun 2026

Reliability-Aware Mixture-Of-Agents For Robust Ai-Generated Image Detection, Jake Jump, Yu-Wing Tai

Computer Science Senior Theses

Detecting AI-generated images requires reasoning across multiple levels of evidence, ranging from low-level statistical artifacts to high-level semantic inconsistencies. Existing approaches typically rely on a single class of signals or emphasize complex multi-agent coordination, which limits robustness under distribution shifts and common image degradations. We propose a reliability-aware Mixture-of-Agents (MoA) framework that treats Vision-Language Model (VLM) agents and computational features as complementary experts and aggregates their predictions based on empirically calibrated reliability. Rather than relying on intricate inter-agent reasoning, our approach centers on structured aggregation: high-precision “anchor” agents drive predictions, while weaker but complementary signals are adaptively incorporated to resolve …
