Expanding Transmobilities: Understanding Genderdiverse And Transgender Travel Behavior Through An Art-Informed Methodology, Nicholas Michael Puczkowskyj
Dissertations and Theses
Transgender and genderdiverse people face discrimination and harassment in public when making trips in Portland, OR. People who identify as genderdiverse or transgender create unique travel behavior due to the influence of their internalized and expressed gender identity and through interactions in public. This dissertation examines how gender identity influences the travel behavior of genderdiverse and transgender people and how these experiences influence their subjective wellbeing when making trips in Portland, Oregon. Traditional one-on-one interviews were conducted in conjunction with allowing the interviewees to produce art as a non-verbal form of expression and communication of their experiences making trips in …

Privately Negotiated Withdrawals: How Shareholders Can Shape A Company's Carbon Emissions Reduction, Gabriella M. Chioffi
Privately Negotiated Withdrawals: How Shareholders Can Shape A Company's Carbon Emissions Reduction, Gabriella M. Chioffi
Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum
Governed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Rule 14a-8, shareholder proposals are a fundamental and longstanding mechanism that investors use to express their opinions and preferences on how a corporation is operating. Over the last decade, there has been a marked shift in the subject matter of the proposals that shareholders are submitting, as concerns relating to the environment have become an increasingly key issue. However, shareholder support for these climate-related proposals reached its highest point in 2021 and has declined slightly in subsequent years. The conditions that made shareholder proposals a successful tool in 2021 have since changed, …
Does A Common Threat Unite?: Alliance Formation In East Asia Under Chinese Pressure, Sean G. Mcclellan
Does A Common Threat Unite?: Alliance Formation In East Asia Under Chinese Pressure, Sean G. Mcclellan
Honors Theses
The study explores whether a shared geopolitical threat fosters alliance formation among East Asian nations, focusing on Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea in the context of increasing Chinese influence. Integrating insights from international relations theory and social psychology—particularly Realistic Conflict Theory and the out-group unifying effect—the research evaluates whether perceived Chinese aggression corresponds with increased positive sentiment toward the United States. Utilizing data from the Asian Barometer Survey, linear regression analysis is conducted to assess how perceptions of Chinese and U.S. influence, democratic values, and political affiliation shape public attitudes. Results show that while negative views of Chinese and U.S. …

Extraction Of Key Themes In Online Health Discourse Using Unsupervised Learning And Large Language Models, Miranda G. Scully
Computer Science Senior Theses
Health online discussion boards are a modern platform that allow patients to interact with each other and the healthcare system as a whole, making them valuable sources of information for clinicians seeking to better anticipate treatment experiences and barriers. This study focuses on one such community, r/suboxone, a subreddit where patients using Suboxone share their experiences and ask questions. Our analysis is motivated by previous work that proposes event-based classification systems for such posts which buckets posts from r/suboxone into one or more of five high-level labels (Access Logistics, Co-Occurring Drug Usage, Medication for Opioid Use Disorder Administration, Psychophysical Effects, …

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for travel planning. Yet, little is known about how travellers experience and interact with such language models. This qualitative study explores how users employ LLMs to plan trips, drawing on the hedonic/pragmatic model of user experience to examine functional and affective dimensions. We collected data from 104 participants with prior experience using LLMs for travel advice through open-ended questionnaire responses. Thematic analysis revealed three key insights: (1) users value the pragmatic benefits of LLMs, such as efficiency, clarity, and confidence in decision-making, while also appreciating hedonic qualities, including inspiration, enjoyment, and authenticity; (2) …
Foundations' Deep, Emily Williams, Morgan Williams
Foundations' Deep, Emily Williams, Morgan Williams
University Honors Theses
Most historic buildings do not survive as they were built, yet preservation frameworks still tend to evaluate them as if they did.
Foundations' Deep begins with a structure located in Helena, Montana 59602, a building that sits uneasily within the categories it has been asked to meet. Built in the early twentieth century, it has persisted through alteration, abandonment, and use. What remains is not a stable artifact but a record of accumulated decisions, some careful and many indifferent, now embedded in the fabric of the building itself.
The thesis grows from this condition and from the limits of the …

Since early 2025, a nearly unprecedented bloom of common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) has occurred off the southwest UK coast. Although native to UK waters, the species is usually rare, making this the largest bloom recorded in at least 75 years. While many octopus have been commercially landed, they have also preyed heavily on economically important shellfish species, including brown crab, European lobster and king scallop. Landings of these species declined sharply in 2025, causing significant hardship for many in inshore fishing communities. In response, a rapid research project was commissioned in August 2025 to investigate the history, causes and impacts …

Introduction: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the scientific process is advancing at a remarkable speed, thanks to continued innovations in large language models. While AI provides widespread benefits, including editing for fluency and clarity, it also has drawbacks, including fabricated content, perpetuation of bias, and lack of accountability. The editorial board of Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine (RAPM) therefore sought to develop best practices for AI usage and disclosure.
Methods: A steering committee from the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine used a modified Delphi process to address definitions, disclosure requirements, authorship standards, and editorial oversight …

We identified an important oncogenic role for protocadherin 7 (PCDH7), a cell surface protein frequently overexpressed in lung adenocarcinoma and associated with poor clinical outcome. Pcdh7 depletion reduces tumor burden and prolongs survival in KrasLSL-G12D; Tp53fl/fl mice. These findings nominate this cell surface protein as an actionable therapeutic target and highlight the therapeutic potential of PCDH7 inhibition for non–small cell lung cancer. We report the development and characterization of high-affinity anti-PCDH7 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that inhibit downstream mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway activation and suppress tumor growth in multiple mutant KRAS–driven models. A lead mAb (mAb7) sensitized tumors …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Organometallic Polymers And Their Cytotoxicity Towards Human Cancer Cell Lines, Paul Peter Slawek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This research aimed to synthesize organometallic polymers from dialkyl (methyl, ethyl, butyl, cyclohexyl, and octyl) and diaryl (phenyl) tin dichlorides and three organic monomers, dipicolinic acid (DPA), chloramphenicol (CH), and isomannide (IS), using interfacial polymerization. Structure-activity relationships were investigated through physicochemical characterization (light-scattering photometry, proton NMR, and IR spectroscopy) and cytotoxicity was evaluated against six human cancer cell lines (AsPC-1, PANC-1, MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, HT-29, PC-3), with cisplatin serving as the reference standard.
Five DPA/tin polymers were synthesized, with IC50 values in the range of 0.60–0.71 μg/mL. Their cytotoxicity was significantly lower than that of cisplatin (0.0023-0.044 μg/mL), suggesting that …

School of Art, Design and Architecture
AI literacy can be situated at the intersection of other types of literacy such as media literacy anddigital literacy, but the concept is distinct. What complicates our understanding of AI literacy is thatAI is highly opaque and black-box, creating obstacles to grasping what these systems are doing andhow (Burrell, 2016; Petrovčič, et al. 2024). This requires an interdisciplinary effort in conceptualizingand mapping AI literacy. Based on our analyses of the current literature, we see five different typesof conceptualizations of AI literacy:1.Competency-based approaches: focused on skills, knowledge, and ethical use of AI.2.Awareness-oriented approaches: centered on recognizing the presence and influence of …

Mitochondria undergo fusion and fission. While DRP1 regulates fission, fusion is controlled by OPA1, MFN1, and MFN2. The balance between these processes and the crosstalk between machineries remains poorly understood. MFN2 mutations cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2 A (CMT2A), affecting mitochondrial fusion and morphology. However, their role in fission is unclear. Using skin fibroblasts from CMT2A patients (L248H and M376V MFN2 mutations) and wild-type mouse embryonic fibroblasts expressing these variants, we studied how MFN2 mutations impact mitochondrial dynamics beyond fusion. We analyzed mitochondrial morphology and dynamics by live-cell confocal microscopy and tested fusion/fission protein levels, oxygen consumption rate (OCR), extracellular …

Background: This secondary analysis of the CONFIDENCE (combination effect of fInerenone and empagliflozin in participants with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes using a UACR endpoint) trial (REGISTRATION: URL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov; Unique identifier: NCT05254002) assessed systolic blood pressure (SBP) changes with empagliflozin/finerenone combination therapy versus monotherapy in people with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes across baseline SBP categories. We assessed SBP response predictors and whether early (day 30) SBP changes mediate urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio reductions.
Methods: Participants (n=800) were stratified by baseline SBP (< 130 mm Hg; ≥130 mm Hg). Outcomes included SBP response (≥10 mm Hg reduction from baseline at day 180) and longitudinal SBP changes, analyzed by linear mixed-effects models and logistic regression. Causal mediation analysis, a secondary exploratory analysis, evaluated the effect of day 30 SBP change on day 180 urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio reduction.
Results: At baseline, 532 (66%) participants had SBP ≥130 mm Hg; 268 (34%) …

The Caspian Sea, the Earth's largest inland water body, faces water level decline, drawing comparisons to the collapse of the Aral Sea. Unlike the Aral Sea, the relative roles of climatic variability, hydrological changes, and anthropogenic pressures on the Caspian Sea remain poorly understood. Here, we integrate satellite observations, in situ hydrological records and reanalysis data to examine recent drivers of the Caspian water loss. We show that total river inflow to the Caspian Sea has declined significantly, primarily due to reduced discharge from the Volga River. At the same time, precipitation over the basin has remained broadly stable, while …

This investigation evaluates stationary impingement cooling of two bio-based fluids on a rectangular steel plate (230 × 120 × 12 mm) using jet diameters of 10 mm and 40 mm across impingement gaps of 115–155 mm. The study addresses the critical need for sustainable cooling media in metallurgical processes while advancing fundamental understanding of bio-fluid jet impingement heat transfer through integrated experimental-computational methodology. ANSYS-based numerical simulations and parametric optimization assessed how jet diameter and impingement gap influence convective heat transfer coefficients and governing dimensionless parameters. Temperature–time data were analysed using lumped thermal mass methods, generating empirical correlations from Reynolds, Nusselt, …
Managing Ai Bot Access To Open Scholarly Infrastructures, Petr Knoth
Managing Ai Bot Access To Open Scholarly Infrastructures, Petr Knoth
FORCE 2026
The rapid rise of generative AI has created unprecedented demand for large, high-quality research corpora. Open access repositories and other open scholarly infrastructures have therefore become primary sources for AI bots, because they host research that is not universally reliable, but remains far more evidence-based than most web content. This is both an opportunity and a strain: repositories are now more valuable than ever, but machine traffic brings sustainability, capacity and policy challenges. Repositories may be able to scale, but who should fund that scaling, and under what conditions?
The core dilemma is how to curb abusive high-load bot activity …

How do we recognise great research in all its diverse forms? Around the world, institutions are trying to move beyond simple citation counts toward something fairer and more meaningful. At the University of Bath in the UK, we’ve been experimenting with ways to combine traditional bibliometrics with richer indicators of engagement, such as policy influence, media attention, and real-world impact, to build a more balanced picture of research quality.
In this lightning talk, we’ll share what we’ve learned so far: how we co-created guidance with researchers, librarians, and research managers; how we built discipline-sensitive approaches; and how we trained our …

Political Power In The Digital Shadows: The Surveillance State And Far-Right Party Strength In Central And Eastern Europe, Abby K. Finley
Political Science Honors Projects
The recent rise of far-right leaders, from Donald Trump challenging democratic institutions in the United States to Viktor Orbán's fifteen-year autocratic reign in Hungary, has led me to my main research question: Why are some far-right parties stronger than others? Conducting process tracing analysis of Hungarian, Polish, Slovak, and Czech far-right politics from 2005 to 2025, I argue that far-right parties are stronger when they utilize the surveillance state to limit democratic institutions and actors. My findings clarify how far-right parties use the surveillance state and other tactics to maintain power within their nation.

Digital literacy enables individuals to confidently engage with electronic devices and digital resources. While many adults use these tools to search for information, some still lack the essential skills to do so effectively. This pragmatic paper investigates the basic digital literacy skills of adult patrons at Adriaanse Public Library in Cape Town. Framed by SCONUL Seven Pillars of Information Literacy through a Digital Literacy “lens”, we employed a sequential mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative pre- and post-tests with qualitative interviews among 30 purposively selected participants. Quantitative data was analyzed statistically while thematic analysis was used for qualitative data. The findings revealed …

A technique is proposed for audio-synchronized personal media playback in a streaming interface. An audio signal associated with a media item is obtained. Voice activity data reflecting one or more voice characteristics associated with at least one speaker of the media item is extracted from the audio signal. A voice embedding representing the one or more voice characteristics associated with the at least one speaker is generated. The voice embedding is associated with at least one embedding cluster for the media item. One or more speaker-based playback operations are performed with respect to the media item based on the at …

Synthetic dye contamination of waterways poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. Eriochrome Black T (EBT) is a persistent azo dye that is especially dangerous because of its toxicity and chemical stability. This study evaluates cork as a cost-effective and environmentally responsible biosorbent for the removal of EBT from aquatic systems. Experimental observations confirmed that adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 25 minutes at an optimal pH of 4. Kinetic using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich models revealed that the pseudo-second-order model yielded the most accurate fit (k2 = 0.2482 g/mg.min), implying that chemisorption is the primary …
