Self-Esteem Moderating Multiracial Identity And Social Anxiety In Asian Americans, Hoa Vo
Self-Esteem Moderating Multiracial Identity And Social Anxiety In Asian Americans, Hoa Vo
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between multiracial identity and social interaction anxiety among emerging Asian American adults. Specifically, it explores the moderating role of self-esteem and potential gender differences in these relationships. Multiple regression models and independent samples t-tests were used to analyze data from 139 multiracial individuals with Asian heritage (Mage = 19.95, 79.13% female) aged 18 to 29. The results indicated that while multiracial identity integration (MII) was positively associated with social interaction anxiety (SIAS; B = 0.843, p = .010), it was not significant and self-esteem (RES; B = 0.036, p = .899) did not significantly moderate …

The Legend Of Taylor Heinicke: An Autoethnography Of Unexpected, Passionate Fandom, Brendan O'Hallarn
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Passionate fandom is not a novel phenomenon in the field of sport. The fervor of fans builds stadiums and has allowed the sport industry to grow exponentially in the past few decades. Scholars have examined the passionate fan through many theoretical lenses, but comparatively little scholarship has looked at sport fandom fervor from inside. An autoethnographic examination of my unexpected journey as a fan of journeyman National Football League (NFL) quarterback Taylor Heinicke demonstrates how fandom can stir passions and create rituals in sport followers. A multimedia diary of Heinicke's unexpected ascension to starting quarterback of the Washington Commanders provides …

Investigating Leadership Influence On Adoption Of Artificial Intelligence In Corporate Communication, Ernest Cornel Oduor
Master of Arts in Digital Journalism
This study investigated the influence of leadership on adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) in corporate communication within two civil society organizations (CSOs)—the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and Transparency International-Kenya (TI-Kenya). The study used a qualitative method to identify AI tools in corporate communication, examine leadership approaches that influence AI adoption, scrutinize employee perceptions of leadership influence on AI use, and identify the motivators and barriers to adopting AI. Data collected through interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) revealed that 23 AI tools were employed across various corporate communication functions to enhance efficiency and productivity. The overall finding was that, among …

Examining The Status Of Ai Use Guidelines In Editorial Policies Of Kenyan Digital Media Houses And Challenges In Their Formulation And Implementation In Newsrooms, Nickson Mwirigi Mbaabu
Master of Arts in Digital Journalism
Integrating AI in Kenyan digital media houses presents opportunities and challenges, underscoring the need for formal guidelines in newsrooms. This study examined the status of AI use guidelines in the editorial policies of Kenyan media houses, along with the challenges involved in formulating and implementing these guidelines. Semi-structured interviews served as the primary data collection method, conducted with editors and reporters from four purposively selected media houses: Nation Media Group (NMG), Kenyans.co.ke, Nairobileo.co.ke, and Sauce.co.ke, all based in Nairobi. A total of 14 journalists were interviewed. Additionally, editorial policies of the selected media houses were analysed to assess if AI …

Investigating Consumer Determinants Of News Subscriptions Among Media In Kenya: The Case Study Of Nation Media Group, Gerald Andae
Master of Arts in Digital Journalism
The changing media landscape in a digital era has compelled media organisations in Kenya to transition to subscription-based business model in efforts to stay afloat amid dwindling advertising revenues. While an upward trajectory of online readership has driven this shift, consumers have shown slow adoption to subscription models posing a challenge to financial viability of traditional media organisations. This study investigates the determinants influencing digital news subscriptions in Kenya, focusing on Nation Media Group's (NMG) platform, Nation.Africa. The research uses a mixed-methods approach to analyse perceived value, psychographic factors, and socioeconomic influences shaping consumer subscription behaviour. The findings reveal that …
The Impact Of Layoffs On Journalists Who Remain Employed By Media Organisations In Kenya, Gloria Lihavi Aradi
The Impact Of Layoffs On Journalists Who Remain Employed By Media Organisations In Kenya, Gloria Lihavi Aradi
Master of Arts in Digital Journalism
The digital revolution in Kenya has caused a mass migration of audiences from traditional to digital media platforms, leading to record drops in legacy media revenues and profits. To cope with the continued shrinking of revenues, legacy media entities in Kenya frequently implement workforce reductions. In mid-2024, Kenya’s two largest media companies, NMG and SG, announced hundreds of job cuts, marking one of the biggest downsizings in the history of the country’s media industry. The move of one of the country’s biggest newspapers, People Daily, to a fully online publication in November 2024 could also signal more job cuts. However, …

Pressing Matters: American Print Culture And The Development Of Proto-Romanticism, Daniel Young
Pressing Matters: American Print Culture And The Development Of Proto-Romanticism, Daniel Young
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This thesis explores the distinctive features of post-independence American print culture and their influence on the emergence of American Romanticism. Advancements in printing technology, the establishment of paper mills, and the proliferation of newspapers, magazines, and pamphlets created a dispersed and unrestricted print environment. This accessibility allowed for a dynamic exchange of ideas, disseminated revolutionary concepts, and cultivated a unique American ethos characterized by individualism and intellectual freedom. Key works such as Washington Irving's The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. and Charles Brockden Brown's Wieland and Edgar Huntly illustrate how early American Romanticism evolved to reflect the unique American …

Exploring The Development Of Mental Health Training Programs For Black And Brown Female Teens And Preteens In Illinois Nonprofits, Darryca Brim Mims
All Capstone Projects
The spread of social media has posed severe mental health issues to Black and Brown female teens and pre-teens (BBFTPTs), as they are particularly prone to cyberbullying, racial discrimination, and Eurocentric beauty ideals. This qualitative analysis explored the incorporation of negative effects of social media by Chicago nonprofits on their mental health training programs for BBFTPTs. Employing semi-structured interview methodology on seven nonprofit leaders, the research examined organizational decision-making on curriculum development within the theoretical framework of resource dependency theory, institutional theory, and change management theory. Data analysis revealed funding limitations, pressure from external stakeholders on curricular decisions, and the …
An Eye For An Eye Makes A Vigilant Society, Liam C. Preyer
An Eye For An Eye Makes A Vigilant Society, Liam C. Preyer
Capstone Showcase
Vigilantism is one of the oldest practices of mankind; for as long as there have been moral and legal laws to govern us and live by, there have been individuals who have sought justice outside these systems. Vigilantism is the response to failures in the justice system, and in the United States in particular, we have seen examples from the Western Frontier to the modern-day digital landscape. This paper will explore the nature of vigilante justice through historical, psychological, media-driven, legal, and digital lenses. We will explore how cultural narratives, media influences, government actions, and psychological motivations have shaped the …

Psychedelic Medicine Exceptionalism, Mason Marks, I. Glenn Cohen
Scholarly Publications
Research on psychedelic medicines is experiencing a revival. Some clinicians, scientists, and ethicists believe that psychedelics are so different from other treatments that they warrant special consideration in how they are researched, regulated, commercialized, and administered. Others argue that psychedelic medicines show clinical potential, but they should be treated like other medical interventions. In other words, identical standards should apply. This article analyzes whether psychedelic medicines warrant special consideration from a regulatory and ethical perspective.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research
This paper introduces innovative designs for synchronous electric motors with phase coils and permanent magnets (PM) or DC-excitation coils embedded in the stator. Alongside concentrated phase coils in dedicated slots, the spoke-type PMs offer high flux intensification, while the option for DC-excitation coils eliminates demagnetization risks. Since the rotor has no active electromagnetic components, the machine can achieve high-speed operation while enabling advanced cooling systems focused solely on the stator. A special implementation with a “wave” or “serpentine” DC-excitation winding which has the potential for reduced losses depending on the motor aspect ratio is presented. The operation, control, and polarity …
The Effect Of Inclusive Leadership By Pastoral Leaders On Catholic Parish Vitality, Matthew F. Manion
The Effect Of Inclusive Leadership By Pastoral Leaders On Catholic Parish Vitality, Matthew F. Manion
Dissertations
Catholic parish life in the United States has passed the point of decline where minor changes will enable it to grow again. Church leaders need a new missionary culture and outward-focused approaches to reach people today with the timeless truths of the faith. The old mindset of putting all the responsibility on the shoulders of the clergy to solve problems no longer works. Since heterogeneous groups make better decisions than homogeneous groups in complex, adaptive situations, this study explores the hypothesis that inclusive leadership by Catholic parish leaders leads to more innovation and better solutions to the challenges of church …
