Religious Bias And Texas’S Bluebonnet Learning English Language Arts Lessons, Mark Chancey

Religious Studies Research

In November 2024, after months of heated public debate, Texas approved new English language arts reading lessons for public elementary schools (kindergarten through fifth grade) that devote notably more attention to the Bible than to other religious texts and to the Christian tradition than to other religions. This article describes the controversy over these lessons and provides examples of the various ways in which they privilege Christianity over other traditions.

Popularizing Autogestión: Punk, Zapatismo, And Anarchist Ethics In Mexico City, Livia K. Stone Jan 2025

Popularizing Autogestión: Punk, Zapatismo, And Anarchist Ethics In Mexico City, Livia K. Stone

Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology

Autogestión (self-management), has been a popular articulation of radical politics since its emergence in the 1960s. This article examines how Mexico City's anarcho-punk scene transformed autogestión in the 1990s from an anarcho-syndicalist principle into a unique ethical practice detached from industrial material production. It was then popularized and made more mainstream through university rock festivals. As these were Zapatista benefit concerts, autogestión became inadvertently attached to Zapatismo and detached from anarchism and punk. This history is a crucial one for understanding the political development of an entire generation of the political left in Mexico City who were young in the …

The Unethical Practices Of Force-Placed Insurance: How To Protect And Indemnify The Forgotten Investors Of Mortgage-Backed Securities, Devin Moore Jan 2025

The Unethical Practices Of Force-Placed Insurance: How To Protect And Indemnify The Forgotten Investors Of Mortgage-Backed Securities, Devin Moore

St. Thomas Law Review

In the United States, the media has been attempting to inform homeowners of an abusive insurance policy: force-placed insurance. Force-placed insurance is a type of policy that only protects the interest of the mortgage lender or mortgage servicer, and not the homeowner. While federal and state governments have restricted force-placed insurance policies for homeowners, the laws do not protect investors of mortgage-backed securities with force-placed insurance policies. These investors have an extensive impact on the general population since their investments are funded by retirement savings plans. As a result, the investors could lose the retirement savings of millions without proper …

Debiasing Recency: Evidence From Individual Investor Stock Sales, Vladimir Kotomin, Abhishek Varma Jan 2025

Debiasing Recency: Evidence From Individual Investor Stock Sales, Vladimir Kotomin, Abhishek Varma

Faculty Publications – Finance, Insurance, and Law

In the first large-sample study of recency bias mitigation, we show that individual investors dispose of relatively longer-held stocks in December tax-loss sales compared to other months. We argue that before engaging in December tax-loss sales, investors review all or most of their losing positions instead of focusing on the most recently acquired stocks. Thus, reviewing relevant information mitigates recency bias in a large, diverse sample of investors. This behavior is consistent across investor, stock, and portfolio characteristics; it is found even in accounts with only long-term capital losses.

Fostering Cyber Defense: Investigating Effective Methods To Enhance Cybersecurity Awareness, Dmitri H. Morris

Emerging Writers

In the current rapidly evolving digital era, the importance of cybersecurity has become paramount, with millions of records stolen daily and the cost of cybercrime reaching trillions of dollars annually. While the importance of cybersecurity is increasing, many individuals continue to implement poor cybersecurity practices, such as utilizing weak password construction strategies, opening phishing attachments, and handling data irresponsibly. These practices place individuals and the entities that employ them at risk, highlighting a critical need for greater cybersecurity awareness. Addressing this need requires effective strategies to increase awareness and alter individual behaviors. This paper provides a thorough examination of two …

Without Noncompete Agreements, Can Employers Keep A (Trade) Secret?, Cynthia L. Dahl Jan 2025

Without Noncompete Agreements, Can Employers Keep A (Trade) Secret?, Cynthia L. Dahl

American University Business Law Review

Data, algorithms, and proprietary information and processes are critical assets for increasing numbers of companies. Since information assets often cannot be protected through patent, companies may instead rely on trade secret law. To meet the legal standard of a trade secret, companies must show that their information assets confer a competitive advantage to them by virtue of the secret status, and that they have taken reasonable measures to preserve the secrecy.

One of the reliable methods companies use to maintain secrecy, and to show that they have taken the required reasonable measures, is the use of restrictive covenants. Traditionally, companies …

Subsidized And Forgotten: The Quiet Erosion Of The Supplemental Security Income Program In American Social Policy, Johntrell Bowles

Public Health Theses

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program was created to guarantee a basic level of income security for the nation's most economically vulnerable populations: low-income elderly adults, people who are blind, and individuals with disabilities. Despite this foundational mission, SSI has stagnated over the past fifty years, becoming increasingly inadequate in addressing the economic and social realities of those it was designed to support.

This thesis examines how congressional neglect, enduring stigma toward welfare recipients, and outdated policy structures have eroded SSI’s ability to fulfill its original promise. Grounded in a critical social policy framework and informed by the author's professional …

“Change Is Inevitable”: How The First Amendment Safety-Valve Theory Can Expand Protections For Student Expression, Leslie Klein, Jonathan Peters

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

This article challenges the traditional notion that the regulation and protection of student expression in public schools should be based primarily or exclusively on the marketplace theory, which often reinforces the status quo. The safety valve theory is more appropriate and should be applied, especially in the current political and social climate, to inspire an expansion of student speech and press rights that would support expressive activities seeking to change the public discourse around important issues. Students who can speak freely will be more willing to accept decisions that go against them, and a school environment in which passionate or …

Adopted Into Debt?, Grace Palcic

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

While adoption procedures differ from state to state, every state uses some variation of the best interest of the child standard to determine the outcome of an adoption proceeding. To gather information for the best interest determination, states have created the home study process to investigate prospective adoptive families. A home study allows social workers and/or private adoption agencies to look at the needs of the child, the ability of the parents to care for the child, the existing familial dynamics, the safety of the physical home, the perceived moral character and reputation of the parents, mental and physical health …

Examining The Disclosure Of Sensitive Information Through Mobile Applications: A Privacy Calculus And Warning Experiment On Location-Based Services, Dwayne A. Ford

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Smartphones and mobile applications have become all but ubiquitous in society. These applications provide a plethora of functions both in standalone and network configurations. Many of these popular applications utilize Location-Based Services (LBS) to deliver value to the user. Whether for navigation, transportation or social interactions, sharing information is essential when using these applications. While LBS applications provide various benefits, the sharing of location data also creates significant privacy risks. In many cases, users are unaware of the real risks and continue to share their location data in exchange for the benefits the application provides.

The problem identified in this …

Emulating God’S Heart In Embracing And Regulating Our God-Given Emotions, Cyndie Claypool De Neve Jan 2025

Emulating God’S Heart In Embracing And Regulating Our God-Given Emotions, Cyndie Claypool De Neve

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Christians need a Bible-based tool to help them move from emotionally dysregulated to emotionally regulated. Instead of processing their emotions, some Christians have a tendency to ignore and suppress their emotions, which can lead to poor mental health, unfulfilling relationships, and emotionally dysregulated behaviors such as overeating, rage, and various addictions. This doctoral project explored theological, literary, and field research to create a tool to help Christians move from feeling emotionally dysregulated to emotionally regulated. The biblical examples of God, Jesus, the Prophet Elijah, and King David were combined with secular research on emotional granularity, gratitude journaling, confession, and prayer, …

Peer mentoring also fostered greater social inclusion by reducing bullying behaviors, improving student engagement, and classroom behavior. It was also found that peer mentors themselves experienced personal growth with greater leadership skills, self-esteem, empathy, and positive …

Reading Motivation And Achievement: Exploring Theories, Strategies, And School Climate Contexts, Andrea L. Esterly Jan 2025

Reading Motivation And Achievement: Exploring Theories, Strategies, And School Climate Contexts, Andrea L. Esterly

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This literature review examined the intersection of self-efficacy and motivation, and their impact on reading achievement. The analysis demonstrated how motivation and context support and shape students’ reading outcomes. This synthesis of peer-reviewed research (2014–2024) from ERIC, PsycINFO, and JSTOR highlights Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a lens for understanding reading motivation through competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Evidence shows that fluency strategies (prosody, repeated reading, and arts integration) enhance pacing, comprehension, and engagement, while supportive school climates (characterized by safety, teaching, and relationships) further sustain motivation. The evidence underscores the importance of integrating motivational supports, fluency instruction, and student-centered practices to …

As the AAM industry approaches its respective takeoff, novel dimensions of aircraft design, including propulsion systems and pilot interfaces, have emerged. These new and often complex dimensions result in operations differing from traditional aviation contexts, with the potential to influence pilot behavior and decision-making (Mendolia et al., 2022). There are also novel safety-critical events that pilots must be prepared to cope with on battery-powered aircraft. To examine these issues, we conducted an interview study with 11 pilots and engineers who have either flown, worked on, or conducted research pertaining to electrically powered aircraft. During the interview process, the participants were …
