Ai, Post-Truth Realities, And Thai Students’ Information-Seeking Behavior, Pavel Slutskiy
Ai, Post-Truth Realities, And Thai Students’ Information-Seeking Behavior, Pavel Slutskiy
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This paper investigates how ai challenges traditional verification, citation, and evaluation principles, thereby eroding truth. ai-generated content, lacking verifiable citations, operates on probabilistic models that present information as probable rather than factual. The widespread reliance on ai for information-seeking risks diminishing critical evaluation, blending fact with fiction, and compromising academic integrity. To explore these effects, a mixed-method study was conducted involving 240 Chulalongkorn University students who used various online resources like Google, Wikipedia, and ChatGPT to research Rudolf Carnap’s verificationism views. Their choices were analyzed to assess dependency patterns on these platforms. Further, a qualitative analysis compared ai-generated responses with …

A Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of English Picture Book Covers In Attracting Reading Interest Among Chinese Young Learners : A Case Study Of Caldecott Award Winners, Mengting Li, Atipat Boonmoh
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This study used multimodal discourse analysis (mda) to examine how images in English picture books attract young readers. Using Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar, the study analyzes Caldecott Award-winning book covers to understand how meaning is conveyed and how multimodal resources engage children in reading. The research monitored 25 young learners aged 5–7 using English picture books for 10 weeks. The three most and least favorite books were identified and analyzed for representational, interactive, and compositional meaning. The study found that visual appeal, engaging characters, humor and other elements are key elements in attracting young readers. The findings provide …

Politics And Popular Culture : Contextualizing The Use Of K-Pop By Indonesian Political Parties, Ghaziah Nurika Akhni, Amalia Nur Andini
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This research examines the role played by popular culture in shaping favorable perceptions of three prominent Indonesian political parties – gerindra, psi, and pan – in the 2024 election. Employing a comprehensive framework by Inthorn et al. (2013 in Loader, Vromen, and Xenos 2016) delineating three dimensions of social use in celebrity politics, namely, (1) knowledge, (2) identity, and (3) evaluation, this paper scrutinizes the political communication strategies employed by these parties during their respective political campaigns. The empirical findings provide a nuanced understanding of the historical underpinnings and incorporation of K-pop as a political communication strategy within the Indonesian …
Sexual Politics On Youtube : Shifting Values In Femininities And Women’S Empowerment, Porranee Singpliam
Sexual Politics On Youtube : Shifting Values In Femininities And Women’S Empowerment, Porranee Singpliam
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This research examines sexual politics in the new media platform YouTube. The gendered notions studied depart from existing scholarly works as they emphasize the process of change in Thai gender order. A mixed research method combining qualitative and quantitative approaches was employed. The findings from studying five women YouTubers show two significant themes: 1) The politics of the sexes in which society’s admiration of material possessions, individualism, and wealth is evident, and 2) A change in sex/gender relations wherein production, consumption, and accumulation relations shift together with power relations. Ultimately, this research contends that women YouTubers should be read as …

Commodification Of Kecak Ramayana As Tourism Art In Melasti Beach, Ungasan Village, District Of Kuta Selatan, Badung, Bali, Robby Hidajat, Ew. Suprihatin Dp., Surasak Jamnongsarn, Muhammad Afaf Hasyimy
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This research examines the integration of Kecak Ramayana into Balinese traditional tourism art, focusing on the tourism art industry in the Beach of Melasti, Ungasan, Bali. The central theme explores the commodification of art’s role in attracting tourists and enhancing their imaginative experiences, delving into its impact on the ritual values and spiritual aspects of Kecak Ramayana. Utilizing a qualitative approach with interviews, observation and content analysis, the study addresses how this integration unfolds. Findings reveal that commodification causes a dissociation from ritual contexts, leading to the erosion of spiritual values due to a strong consumer-centric emphasis. This phenomenon also …

Sustaining A Local Museum By Creating Value Through A Museum Teamwork Network : A Case Study Of Si Sutthawat Temple Museum, Thailand, Watcharaphong Chumduang, Punjaphut Thirathamrongwee
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This article investigates how local museum development can create value for sustainable self-operation, utilizing the Si Sutthawat Temple Museum in Wiang Pa Pao District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, as a case study. The study delves into the value creation process within the museum’s operations, specifically focusing on the contributions of local personnel. Employing semi-structured interviews and direct observations, the researcher closely studied the individuals playing pivotal roles in the museum’s operations, actively participating in the operator group’s activities. The findings underscore the crucial role of museums in bridging ‘objects’ as the primary drivers of value creation and ‘community kinships’ as …

Empowering Women : Indonesian Muslim Girl Fans, Thailand’S Y-Series, And Gender Equality, Ranny Rastati, Md Azalanshah Md Syed
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This article explores how Indonesian Muslim girl fans experience sexual empowerment through watching Thai dramas portraying homoerotic romances, known as Thai Y-series and Thai Boy’s Love. Despite concerns from local Islamic authorities about moral issues and cultural differences, Y-series have gained popularity among Indonesian Muslim girls. This study raises concerns about the diminishing portrayal of women’s gender roles, given that Muslim girls form the majority of the Y-series fanbase in Indonesia. The patriarchal influence in Y-series appears to be gradually replacing traditional women’s roles with male characters, relegating women to supporting roles. This study argues that the repositioning of gender …
Cultivating Thoughtful Dialogue, Shared Humanity, And Emotional Intelligence In Client Counseling Courses, Jacki J. Langum
Cultivating Thoughtful Dialogue, Shared Humanity, And Emotional Intelligence In Client Counseling Courses, Jacki J. Langum
Saint Louis University Law Journal
Historically, client counseling courses in law schools across the country omitted concepts fundamental to a successful attorney-client relationship–thoughtful dialogue, shared humanity, and emotional intelligence. Psychology and the practice of law, including the omitted concepts, are now being integrated into more courses each semester. The essay demonstrates how I integrate them into my own course and work alongside students to help them practice those concepts and the most important skill of active listening. The students’ practice requires thoughtful work around self-awareness, bias, power, and money–topics often neglected because of the discomfort involved in their contemplation and reflection. The earlier students are …
The Wages Of Constitutional Interpretation, Francesca Procaccini
The Wages Of Constitutional Interpretation, Francesca Procaccini
Saint Louis University Law Journal
The future of constitutional interpretation is a dynamic amalgam of knowns and unknowns. This article explores three. First, an unknown known: the Court’s embrace of formal equality methodologies, more than originalist methodologies, is driving current conservative changes in constitutional law and ushering in a stale and acontextual bent to constitutional rights. Second, another unknown known: both the Court’s equality and originalist methodologies serve to jettison the longstanding and widespread use of intermediate scrutiny and thereby push the level of protection for rights to the extremes. Finally, a known unknown: the Court’s embrace of hyper-formal equality and originalist rules transfers hegemonic …
Originalism And The Chronological Separation Of Powers, Daniel Kiel
Originalism And The Chronological Separation Of Powers, Daniel Kiel
Saint Louis University Law Journal
Inspired by the 2024 Childress Lecture, this essay considers originalism in two distinct guises: first, as a method of constitutional interpretation and then, as a politically-coded signal used to ensure predictability of judicial behavior. Regarding interpretation, the essay critiques originalism and its claim as a determinative source of constitutional understanding as a violation of the oft-overlooked chronological separation of powers embedded in the Constitution. Though originalism is often styled as a way of checking the power of judges, it threatens to impose a tyranny of the past that runs counter to a constitutional structure built upon the diffusion of power. …
Beyond Hysteria: Prosecuting Women For Abortion Is More Likely Now Than Before Roe, Alison Mccarthy
Beyond Hysteria: Prosecuting Women For Abortion Is More Likely Now Than Before Roe, Alison Mccarthy
Saint Louis University Law Journal
When Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health first overturned long-standing precedent protecting a woman's fundamental right to abortion, pro-choice leaders issued warnings about the possibility of prosecuting women for abortions. These concerns were dismissed as hysterical or as political theatrics because, in the past, women were rarely prosecuted for their own abortions. This note analyzes the history of illegal abortion before the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade to demonstrate that women were targeted, used as leverage against abortion providers, and sometimes arrested for their roles in the procedure. Further, this note argues that nationwide panic over gender roles, increasing …
Prosecuting Transnational Disinformation, Abdul Mahir Hazim
Prosecuting Transnational Disinformation, Abdul Mahir Hazim
Saint Louis University Law Journal
Disinformation, along with related terms such as fake news and misinformation, has dominated U.S. media and public discourse over the past decade. It has emerged as a persistent and growing global threat to democratic societies, particularly the United States. Since the 2016 elections, authoritarian regimes and U.S. adversaries, including China, Russia, and Iran, have increasingly leveraged disinformation as a strategic tool to damage public trust in institutions, undermine political processes such as elections, and weaken public confidence in the healthcare system. These efforts are also designed to sow division and erode democratic governance. The breakthroughs in generative artificial intelligence further …

The Past May Be Uncomfortable: Frick V. Stevens, The Protection Of Scholarly Inquiry, Knowledge, And A Free Society As A Retrospective And Salient Study For Our Time, Joshua E. Kastenberg
Saint Louis University Law Journal
The past may be “uncomfortable,” the Washington Post pointed out on July 1, 1966, before adding a far more serious observation: “[t]he suppression of history—which is to say the judgment of historians—is an incongruity of a free society.” A year earlier, Helen C. Frick sued Professor Sylvester K. Stevens in Pennsylvania’s Cumberland County Court of Common Pleas to prevent the publication of his recent history book, Pennsylvania: Birthplace of a Nation. She claimed that the book libeled her deceased father and caused her a loss of standing in the public’s estimation and emotional distress. Judge Clinton R. Weidner indicated …
The Techcons, Chris Jay Hoofnagle
The Techcons, Chris Jay Hoofnagle
Loyola Consumer Law Review
Selling sometimes involves trickery. How should we decide what trickery is "swindling" versus ordinary "selling"? One method is elucidated in Yale Law Professor Arthur Leff's curious, lost-to-history book. In "Swindling and Selling: The Story of Legal and Illegal Congames", Leff showed how market structure is a powerful factor for distinguishing illegal confidence games ("congames") what he called "swindling" from legal "selling." Leff demonstrated how con artists weave narratives to convince marks they have a monopoly over some desirable asset. Con artists then manipulate marks to mistakenly believe they possess a monopsony over its capture.
This essay revisits Leff's mostly forgotten …

Strengthening The Right To Accessible Web Sites For Consumers With Disabilities Through The Development Of A Clear Test For The Nexus Rule Under Title Iii Of The Americans With Disabilities Act, Jonathan Lazar
Loyola Consumer Law Review
Currently, most of the U.S. Federal disability rights laws expressly require accessible websites for people with disabilities, either in the statute or the regulation. There is one major exception: for websites of public accommodations under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the scope of accessibility coverage is determined by a combination of case law and agency interpretations, rather than expressly in the statute or regulations. To make it more complex, there is a three-way circuit split as to whether websites of public accommodations covered under Title III are required to have accessible websites. The predominant view in the …
Information Monopoly: Analyzing The Implications Of Media Consolidation For Chilean Democracy, Kalina Kulig
Information Monopoly: Analyzing The Implications Of Media Consolidation For Chilean Democracy, Kalina Kulig
Araneum: Richmond Journal of American & Global Affairs
This paper examines the characteristics of the Chilean media landscape between 1990 and 2023, focusing on implications for democracy. Beginning with a literature review, I will discuss previous research regarding government threats and economic pressure on Chilean media. I will then argue that although the country has a history of strong investigative reporting, the Chilean press landscape risks undermining democracy due to concentrated ownership and a lack of public trust. I conclude by discussing several factors that could improve the quality of Chilean media.

Telling Their Story: A Proposed Social Group For Autistic Teenagers, Bailey Hull
Telling Their Story: A Proposed Social Group For Autistic Teenagers, Bailey Hull
Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects
Typically developing adolescents go through many transitions and learning experiences from ages 13 to 18. Autistic adolescents also develop through these transitions and learning experiences. This unique group of adolescents can have a much more difficult time with these involvements, however, due to societal standards, learning, and growing within a neurodivergent mindset. As social isolation, bullying, and a lack of friendship opportunities continue to persist within the neurodivergent adolescent community, the lack of appropriate, affirming interventions must be addressed. This doctoral specialization project aims to provide licensed and student-level clinicians with a treatment manual to guide them through a social …

Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (Act) For Appalachains: Cultural Additions To Act, Jessica E. King
Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects
This project examined the potential application of cultural additions to various aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This project is specifically focused on cultural adaptations of ACT for the Appalachian population. The ACT adaptations were devised based on a review of research on Appalachian culture, including the region’s geography, history of exploitation, cultural values, and clinical considerations for working with Appalachian populations. An overview of ACT and treatment effectiveness of ACT is included. It is important to note that this project is intended to be a supplement to ACT, and should be used in tandem with an ACT workbook …
Kentucky Comfort Care: Understanding And Awareness Of Palliative And Hospice Care In Kentucky Adults, Riley E. Hicks
Kentucky Comfort Care: Understanding And Awareness Of Palliative And Hospice Care In Kentucky Adults, Riley E. Hicks
Honors Theses
Kentucky has an overwhelming need for both palliative and hospice care services because of the high percentage of individuals who struggle with chronic or life-threatening conditions. Studies have shown that access to palliative and hospice care may be inhibited by the knowledge patients have of these services. The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness and understanding Kentuckians have of palliative and hospice care and to determine the factors influencing them. A 22-question survey was administered to collect information about Kentuckians understanding of available palliative and hospice care services and common vocabulary used by providers in these settings. …
Habsburg Encounters With Native America: Familiar Strangers, J. Singerton, M. Křížová, Michael Burri
Habsburg Encounters With Native America: Familiar Strangers, J. Singerton, M. Křížová, Michael Burri
German Studies Faculty Works
The central European lands of the Habsburg monarchy have long shared an intertwined past with the Indigenous inhabitants of the Americas. This volume focuses on the process of encountering these peoples as a continual action across several centuries that has produced numerous and varied instances of cultural dialogues, perspectives, and understandings. Moreover, this central European element is something that has not been considered in its own right before now and has been overshadowed by the focus on a wider Germanic fascination for Indigenous cultures. Breaking away from this wider narrative allows us not only to recover a more distinct historical …

A collaboration between a theatre company, a university and
eight community organizations culminated in an applied theatre
project entitled “Living Below the Line.” Residents living with
poverty were invited to become co-creators of a new play,
which was performed in five local venues. The project’s objectives
were 1) the provision of a respectful, supportive, empowering
and creative process for the co-creators, and 2) increased
understanding of the effects of poverty for audience members
and the larger community. This paper reports the findings of the
evaluation, which indicate that the objectives were met in several
ways: 1) the co-creators felt uplifted …

Using Big Data To Dismantle Systemic Barriers: How Tracking Official Misconduct Can Foster Justice And Increase Accountability In The Criminal Legal System, Meagan R. Hurley
Articles
The U.S. criminal legal system is a vast and complex machine, long subject to public and scholarly scrutiny. The U.S. incarcerates more people than any other nation, holding an astonishing 1.9 million individuals behind bars. Of them, approximately eighty percent are indigent, and over sixty percent are racial minorities, despite these groups comprising a relatively small portion of the overall population. In this expansive system, which disproportionately targets minorities and the poor, it is unsurprising that justice is not always served: Human error and bias are nearly guaranteed to occur at some juncture. Experts estimate that about four percent of …

Fair Play Or Financial Power? Examining The Competitive Impact Of Foreign Investment In European Football, Emma M. Fogg
Fair Play Or Financial Power? Examining The Competitive Impact Of Foreign Investment In European Football, Emma M. Fogg
Scripps Senior Theses
Football is not only the most popular sport in Europe but also fundamental to driving local and international economies due to the heavy influence fans have on driving ticket sales, team merchandise purchases and media rights. In the last twenty years, it has become increasingly popular for wealthy capital groups or businessmen from outside Europe to buy clubs and give teams a large influx of capital. Fans and players alike have grown worried that this type of new ownership will change the football world for the worse because teams with foreign investment can outspend their opponents for the best players. …
I Miss My Teeth; I Feel Your Teeth, Emma A. Brauser
I Miss My Teeth; I Feel Your Teeth, Emma A. Brauser
Scripps Senior Theses
I miss my teeth and I feel your teeth are two projects that build on one another in an exploration of the mouth as a vessel for embodied experience and interpersonal translation. These pieces represent the mouth as an ever-changing landscape, one that requires multisensorial modes of understanding. I feel your teeth counters overreliance on the visual, introducing gum-chewing as a way to comprehend the translation from the visual to the tactile and back to the visual.
