Cultural Conquest: Russia's Strategic Assault On Ukrainian Heritage As Both A Catalyst For And A Casualty Of Conflict, Brittan Harrell Jan 2025

Cultural Conquest: Russia's Strategic Assault On Ukrainian Heritage As Both A Catalyst For And A Casualty Of Conflict, Brittan Harrell

American University International Law Review

Vladimir Putin and his government have disseminated fabricated claims about Ukraine’s history, language, and sovereignty as a rationalization for the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Not only has the war resulted in grave human loss, but it has also caused widespread destruction throughout Ukraine. Nongovernmental organizations, foreign governments, academics, and Ukrainian citizens have collected robust evidence that Russian forces are purposefully targeting repositories of Ukrainian identity. The intentional destruction of this protected property is considered a war crime under the Rome Statute. Following the International Criminal Court’s (“ICC”) first successful prosecution for the destruction of protected property in 2016, there has …

In Violation Of Diplomatic Treaties: A Look Into Ecuador's Forced Extraction, Josie C. Tarin

American University International Law Review

In December 2023, former Vice-President of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, sought political asylum in the Mexican Embassy located in Quito, Ecuador. On April 5, 2024, following a week of political discourse between the Ecuadorian and Mexican governments, the Mexican government granted Glas political asylum. In their announcement, Mexico reminded Ecuador that the 1954 Caracas Convention on Diplomatic Asylum and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations protected both Glas and the employees within the Mexican embassy. On the evening of Mexico’s announcement, Ecuadorian agents operating under executive authority entered the Mexican embassy without consent, injured an employee of the Mexican embassy …

Repowering Through Indigenous Research Methodologies: A Case Study Of Culturally Appropriate Mental Health Interventions For Native/ Indigenous Men, Stephen Silva-Brave Jan 2025

Repowering Through Indigenous Research Methodologies: A Case Study Of Culturally Appropriate Mental Health Interventions For Native/ Indigenous Men, Stephen Silva-Brave

Social Work Theses - Archive

Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing have the power to strengthen social work and healing practices for all communities. This study explores how relationships and connections create spaces that feel more like ceremony than research, where trust, storytelling, and shared knowledge guide the way. Bringing Native/Indigenous (N/I) men together in Talking Circles, this work reflects how culturally rooted approaches can shape meaningful mental health support that honors lived experience and community care. Instead of following rigid models created outside of Indigenous ways of life, this approach prioritizes relational accountability, centering voices often excluded from traditional research. Through conversations with …

Innovative Approaches To Combat Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: Integrating Metabolic Modulation, Advanced Therapies, And Lifestyle Interventions, Ngozi Damilola Chidumebi Akingbesote

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), an aggressive and often lethal subtype of breast cancer, continues to challenge researchers and clinicians due to its poor prognosis and limited therapeutic options. This thesis explores novel therapeutic strategies that integrate metabolic modulation, advanced radionuclide therapies, and lifestyle interventions to combat TNBC effectively. The first component investigates metabolic scaling and its implications for cancer metabolism. Gene and protein expression analyses across species reveal that metabolic processes, including oxidative metabolism and detoxification, scale inversely with body mass. This foundational insight underscores the importance of systemic metabolic regulation in understanding cancer progression. In the realm of cancer …

Racing To The Top Instead Of The Bottom In Illinois Estate Law, Sarah E. Waldeck Jan 2025

Racing To The Top Instead Of The Bottom In Illinois Estate Law, Sarah E. Waldeck

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

In the last two decades, competition for trust business has led states to abolish the Rule Against Perpetuities, authorize trust decanting, and permit self-settled asset protection trusts all in the hope that settlors will bring their trusts (and the fees they generate) within a state's jurisdiction. But this legislation is profoundly inequitable because it primarily benefits wealthy settlors and those lucky enough to be their beneficiaries, while shifting cost and risk to everyone else.

In the face of such competition, Illinois has fought to retain its trust business by passing legislation that allows settlors to opt out of the perpetuity …

The Devil Sounds Out: Affect And Intentionality In Conservative Evangelical Anti-Rock Discourse, 1965-1990, Philip Bixby Jan 2025

The Devil Sounds Out: Affect And Intentionality In Conservative Evangelical Anti-Rock Discourse, 1965-1990, Philip Bixby

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Scholars have often described the evangelical reception of rock music as a discourse that changes in a positive direction, from the full-sail rejection of rock in the 1960s to the cautious acceptance of the genre as legitimate worship music throughout the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. This dissertation surveys anti-rock texts written by conservative evangelicals from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s, observing an alternative trajectory of the discourse. The dissertation shows that an uncompromising trend of anti-rock criticism persists well into the 1980s, especially promoted by preachers and writers (for example, Jeff Godwin and Jimmy Swaggart) who sought to deny …

Investigating Non-Canonical Roles Of Atr And Chk1 Throughout The Cell Cycle, Yoon Ki Joo Jan 2025

Investigating Non-Canonical Roles Of Atr And Chk1 Throughout The Cell Cycle, Yoon Ki Joo

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Chromosome Instability (CIN), which results from DNA damage in interphase and chromosome missegregation in mitosis, is considered to be a potent driver of cancer. To prevent CIN, cells harbor the DNA Damage Response (DDR) pathway, which is responsible for detecting and repairing damaged DNA. Because of their importance in preventing CIN, the core members of the DDR pathway such as Ataxia Telangiectasia and Rad3-related (ATR) and Checkpoint kinase 1 (CHK1) have been studied as promising targets in cancer therapy. However, clinical trials show that ATR and CHK1 inhibitors elicit adverse side effects with unknown reasons. Recent research suggests that one …

New Statistical Methods For Mediation Analysis With Independent And Correlated Data, Chao Cheng Jan 2025

New Statistical Methods For Mediation Analysis With Independent And Correlated Data, Chao Cheng

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Causal mediation analysis is a popular statistical tool for evaluating the extent to which an observed exposure-outcome relationship is mediated by an intermediate variable, also referred to as the mediator. Through mediation analysis, the total effect (TE) from the exposure on the outcome can be decomposed into a natural indirect effect (NIE) through the mediator and a natural direct effect (NDE) whose impact is due solely to the exposure and possibly other mediators. Causal mediation analysis has been applied in a variety of empirical research fields, including but not limited to epidemiology, implementation science, economics, and psychology. In implementation science, …

Capital Market Effects Of Fake Social Media Accounts, Brett Campbell Jan 2025

Capital Market Effects Of Fake Social Media Accounts, Brett Campbell

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Fake social media accounts, or bots, are often used to spread or amplify content on social media platforms. I examine the effect of this artificial amplification on capital markets. I obtain a large dataset of posts from the social media platform Twitter (now X) and use several methods to identify accounts that are likely bots. The descriptive analysis suggests bot accounts produce about a third of all tweets mentioning company tickers. Bot tweets are associated with higher market activity, particularly among retail traders. Bot tweets are generally not associated with return reversals, but those with stock price-related content are. Bot …

Digital Identity Infrastructure, Jonathan Evan Hochman Jan 2025

Digital Identity Infrastructure, Jonathan Evan Hochman

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a uniform infrastructure for identifying users and data on the Internet. It identifies the questions we need to ask, provides terminology to think and speak about digital identity, introduces new cryptographic primitives to support digital identity services, and finally presents a sequence of applications that could be built upon the foundation of a shared digital identity infrastructure. These solution sketches are not meant as final specifications. They are examples to demonstrate how digital identity infrastructure could make it easier for digital platforms to deploy new services, improve privacy, reduce user frustration, and support the rule of law …

Bioinformatic, Genetic, And Biochemical Investigations Of The Bacterial Ole Ribonucleoprotein Complex, Chrishan Malinda Fernando Jan 2025

Bioinformatic, Genetic, And Biochemical Investigations Of The Bacterial Ole Ribonucleoprotein Complex, Chrishan Malinda Fernando

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Bacteria are under significant evolutionary pressures to maintain compact genomes. Therefore, they typically have high coding density compared to eukaryotes. As a result, large and highly structured noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are extremely rare in bacteria. However, the few classes of known large ncRNAs have unique and fundamental biological roles and are often catalytic. Furthermore, these ncRNAs reveal what may have been possible under a hypothetical ancient RNA world in which all major biological functions in existing organisms were performed by RNA, rather than DNA and protein. Further study of large ncRNAs is likely to reveal new insights into RNA catalysis and …

I then define a fund as having exposure to a topic if it overweights stocks expected to perform well …

Understanding The Mechanisms Regulating Neuronal Metabolic States In Vivo, Milind Singh Jan 2025

Understanding The Mechanisms Regulating Neuronal Metabolic States In Vivo, Milind Singh

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Glycolysis, a glucose-consuming pathway required for cellular energy production, iswell conserved across species and has been extensively characterized biochemically. Less is understood regarding how it is subcellularly organized, or coordinated across tissues in vivo. Previous work from our lab found that during transient hypoxia or neuronal stimulation, the rate-limiting glycolytic enzyme phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1.1) dynamically re-localizes from the cytoplasm to condensates near synapses in C. elegans neurons. My research examined mechanisms by which PFK-1.1 localization is regulated in neurons, and resulted in two main findings: 1) PFK-1.1 condensate formation in neurons is regulated by a non-cell-autonomous signal derived from hypodermal (epidermal) …

Characterizing And Improving The Readout Of Superconducting Qubits, Wei Dai Jan 2025

Characterizing And Improving The Readout Of Superconducting Qubits, Wei Dai

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The development of fault-tolerant quantum computers relies critically on fast and accurate readout of qubit states. In state-of-the-art superconducting quantum processors, the readout operations exhibit higher error rates and longer execution times compared to single- and two-qubit gates, bottlenecking their performance. How can we realize faster readout with lower error rates in superconducting circuits? In this dissertation, we answer this question through addressing two pressing limitations in the dispersive readout scheme: readout-induced state transitions and Purcell decay of the qubit. We introduce the "readout channel benchmarking" technique for the faithful benchmarking of readout performance accounting for the readout-induced state transitions. …

A Bioluminescent Approach To Coxiella Burnetii Pathogenesis: Development And Utilization Of An In Vivo Imaging Model, Jenna Myr Andrews Jan 2025

A Bioluminescent Approach To Coxiella Burnetii Pathogenesis: Development And Utilization Of An In Vivo Imaging Model, Jenna Myr Andrews

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Coxiella burnetii is a Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium that infects livestock and causes Q fever in humans, which can range from acute flu-like symptoms to severe, persistent infections. C. burnetii relies on a Dot/Icm type IVB secretion system to translocate effector proteins, manipulating host cell processes to support intracellular replication. While axenic media have facilitated in vitro pathogenesis research, in vivo studies remain limited due to the classification of the virulent Nine Mile phase I strain as a category B select agent. Although the avirulent phase II strain RSA493 is exempt from this classification, it is rapidly cleared in immunocompetent …

Spatial Control Of Nonlinear Interactions In Multimode Fibers, Kabish Wisal Jan 2025

Spatial Control Of Nonlinear Interactions In Multimode Fibers, Kabish Wisal

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In recent years, there has been significant advancement in controlling optical scattering by structuring the wavefront of the incident light, or `wavefront shaping'. Most applications of wavefront shaping have focused on linear scattering, but there is a growing interest in tailoring nonlinear scattering. In this thesis, we explore a new approach based on wavefront shaping for suppressing certain instabilities induced by nonlinear scattering in passive and active multimode fibers (MMFs). Specifically, we focus on suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and transverse mode instability (TMI). A key motivation for our work is power scaling in high power fiber lasers and amplifiers, …

Examining Political Knowledge And Trust In The U.S Federal Government, Sheila Alvarez Jan 2025

Examining Political Knowledge And Trust In The U.S Federal Government, Sheila Alvarez

History and Political Science | Senior Theses

The United States is a representative democracy and as such requires participation from its citizens to function; in order to participate, citizens need to have information. Trust in social institutions is often contingent on our knowledge about those institutions. For instance, increased trust in scientists, science, or both, can be affected by educational achievement and scientific knowledge (Yen & Zampelli, 2022). The relationship between trust and knowledge highlights how an understanding of concepts leads to higher receptivity (Yen & Zampelli, 2022). Research has also suggested political knowledge is a driving force of political participation and tolerance (Delli Carpini & Keeter, …
