Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Gaming has become a popular pastime and an expanding industry, creating a growing community of gamers. Conversely, excessive engagement in online gaming may limit individuals’ participation in real-life experiences, thereby exerting negative effects on their well-being. Concerns regarding Internet gaming disorder (IGD) have also emerged as a study topic in Malaysia. The present study examines the association and predictors of demographics, gaming hours, psychological aspects, and IGD among Malay players. The data were obtained through a cross-sectional study employing an online survey questionnaire. A total of 343 Malay players (18-39 years old) were selected using non-probability techniques, specifically purposive and …

Career Aspirations Of Indonesian College Students: A Social Cognitive Career Theory Perspective Through A Cultural Lens, Novi Qonitatin, Dian Ratna Sawitri

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Using the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) framework through a culturally sensitive perspective, this study investigated the several elements affecting the career aspirations of Indonesian college students. Acknowledging the notable disparity in applying SCCT in collectivist, non-Western settings like Indonesia where familial and cultural influences are prominent, the study used a qualitative design with a mixed-format questionnaire (rating scales followed by open-ended reasons) administered to 133 undergraduate students at Universitas Diponegoro. Complementing descriptive rating summaries, thematic study of the qualitative data revealed a complex interaction of elements. One of the main conclusions was the widespread and multifarious influence of family, …

Taming The Kangaroos, Matt Garcia Jan 2025

Taming The Kangaroos, Matt Garcia

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Low-level state courts frequently disregard federal law. And though the judgments of these courts have profound legal consequence for millions of Americans, they receive little oversight. Rather than bastions of justice, low-level state courts are too often sites of lawlessness, earning them the shameful label “kangaroo courts.” This article proposes a path forward by which advocates can curb that lawlessness and enforce critically important federal protections.

As part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a broad legislative effort to protect the national economy and public health infrastructure, Congress altered mandatory procedures in eviction suits. Evictions …

Refugees’ Post-Arrival And Displacement-Related Perceptions In Malaysia And Portugal, Ling Ling Tai, Rita Guerra, Kinga Bierwiaczonek

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Countries receiving refugees can vary dramatically in their policies toward this group (e.g., recognition of refugee status, legal protections), but the role of the receiving country context for refugee adaptation process is under investigated. This cross-sectional study (N = 318) investigates refugees’ perceptions of the forcedness of their displacement and perils related to it, perceived discrimination, and subjective well-being in two different country contexts: Portugal and Malaysia. Results showed perceptions of discrimination and displacement-related perils were significantly higher among refugees in Malaysia, while subjective well-being and perceptions of forcedness were significantly higher for refugees in Portugal. For both groups, …

Article Iii Standing For Cercla Private Cost Recovery Actions: How The Test's Strained Logic Belies Its Authority, Jonathan M. Palacios Jan 2025

Article Iii Standing For Cercla Private Cost Recovery Actions: How The Test's Strained Logic Belies Its Authority, Jonathan M. Palacios

Fordham Environmental Law Review

This Note examines how Article III standing doctrine applies to

private plaintiffs’ cost recovery actions under § 107(a)(4)(B) of the

Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and

Liability Act. A review of judicial decisions reveals inconsistencies

in the analysis of injury in fact and traceability, and suggests that

current Article III standing doctrine is misaligned with its purported

objectives. In response, this Note proposes a structured framework

for assessing injury in fact and a refined approach to analyzing

traceability that distinguishes between different forms of causal

uncertainty. These doctrinal adjustments should better align case

outcomes with Article III standing doctrine’s constitutional and …

La Lengua Española En El Norte De Marruecos: Cien Años Después De La Guerra Del Rif, Lotfi Sayahi

Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

Cronyism In Creating Chronic Disease—A Path To Food Justice, Martha Leonard Jan 2025

Cronyism In Creating Chronic Disease—A Path To Food Justice, Martha Leonard

St. Thomas Law Review

Central to this discussion is a quote often attributed to the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates: “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Today, physicians recognize the crucial role of diet in maintaining good health and preventing chronic disease, but U.S. laws fail to reflect this understanding. The health field has seen significant progress in scientific research on pathology; however, nutritional research presents a challenging and contradictory landscape. Corporate influence in scientific research leads to a lack of consensus on the most optimal diet for promoting general health, presenting a challenge for policymaking. The dark reality is that …

The New World's Pandemic: Sexual Exploitation In The Digital Age, Rocio Iglesias Gonzalez Jan 2025

The New World's Pandemic: Sexual Exploitation In The Digital Age, Rocio Iglesias Gonzalez

St. Thomas Law Review

Mary is a fifteen-year-old who is excited about starting her sophomore year of high school. Unbeknownst to Mary, George, a classmate whose romantic advances Mary had rejected, created a sexually explicit image generated by artificial intelligence, most commonly known as a deepfake, of Mary and started sending it to other classmates. Once Mary discovered the deepfaked pictures, she and her parents sought legal advice on available remedies. Unfortunately, Mary lives in Nevada, a state that has no legislation addressing the issue of nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes. Similarly, at the federal level, Mary has no course of action against her offender. …

Pressing Charges: Criminal Fees And The Excessive Fines Clause, Annemarie Foy Jan 2025

Pressing Charges: Criminal Fees And The Excessive Fines Clause, Annemarie Foy

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Millions of people owe money to the government as a consequence of a criminal charge. But while some of that debt is tied to fines or restitution, much of it is levied as fees, or payments owed to the government for the administration of a defendant’s criminal proceedings. Criminal fees can include costs assessed for pretrial detention, a public defender, a jury, a court appearance, filing a document, electronic monitoring, and more. They are assessed at every stage of a criminal case and for all types of offenses. While state and local governments claim that criminal fees are necessary to …

The Language Of Influence: Sentiment, Emotion, And Hate Speech In State Sponsored Influence Operations, Ashfaq Ali Shafin, Khandaker Mamun Ahmed

Research & Publications

State-sponsored influence operations (SIOs) have become a pervasive and complex challenge in the digital age, particularly on social media platforms where information spreads rapidly and with minimal oversight. These operations are strategically employed by nation-state actors to manipulate public opinion, exacerbate social divisions, and project geopolitical narratives, often through the dissemination of misleading or inflammatory content. Despite increasing awareness of their existence, the specific linguistic and emotional strategies employed by these campaigns remain underexplored. This study addresses this gap by conducting a comprehensive analysis of sentiment, emotional valence, and abusive language across 2 million tweets attributed to influence operations linked …

Toxicity In State Sponsored Information Operations, Ashfaq Ali Shafin, Khandaker Mamun Ahmed

Research & Publications

State-sponsored information operations (IOs) increasingly influence global discourse on social media platforms, yet their emotional and rhetorical strategies remain inadequately characterized in scientific literature. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of toxic language deployment within such campaigns, examining 56 million posts from over 42 thousand accounts linked to 18 distinct geopolitical entities on X/Twitter. Using Google’s Perspective API, we systematically detect and quantify six categories of toxic content and analyze their distribution across national origins, linguistic structures, and engagement metrics, providing essential information regarding the underlying patterns of such operations. Our findings reveal that while toxic content constitutes only …

Where’D You Go, Ohio: Progressive Ohio Ballot Initiative Passage In A Republican Aligned State, Colin D. Swearingen, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Barrett Scheatzle*

2025 Faculty Bibliography

Over the span of just three months, Ohio voters went to the polls to weigh in on three issues concerning the threshold needed to amend the state constitution, abortion, and marijuana. Despite being a Republican-leaning state – per an author’s calculations, its Cook’s Partisan Voter Index is R+6 – the more progressive position won all three votes handily. In August, the coalition supporting the status quo of requiring a simple majority to change the state constitution, a longheld progressive position, won 57.1% of the vote (“The New York Times,” 2023a). In November, voters approved a constitutional amendment to give individuals …

Ai As A Service: What Lawyers And Business Clients Need To Know, Martin Petrin

Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents

AI is seemingly everywhere. Hardly a day goes by in which there is not another media report on new areas in which the technology is being deployed and its potential consequences. While the advances of AI entail many opportunities for business and society, they also create challenges and risks. Although there is already awareness around problems such as AI bias, privacy, and human rights impacts, there are significant issues arising in the specific business-to-business context that have remained largely hidden and tend to receive much less attention. This article will, first, look at business-to-business more generally and show how AI …

Exploring Rubrics And Ai, Beth Bailey Jan 2025

Exploring Rubrics And Ai, Beth Bailey

Faculty Publications

In the evolving landscape of educational assessment, rubrics have long been considered essential tools that bridge the gap between subjective evaluation and objective measurement of student performance (Bean, 2011). As educational institutions increasingly embrace digital learning environments, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in rubric development can represent a significant advancement in assessment methodology. This paper explores the fundamental principles of rubric design, examines various types of rubrics, and investigates how AI tools can enhance the creation and implementation of effective assessment instruments.

The importance of clear, consistent, and fair assessment cannot be overstated in educational contexts. Rubrics serve …

1st Place Research Paper: Increasing The Accessibility Of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Tf-Cbt) For Adolescents With Developmental Language Disorder: A Pilot Study, Lauren A. Fillet Jan 2025

1st Place Research Paper: Increasing The Accessibility Of Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Tf-Cbt) For Adolescents With Developmental Language Disorder: A Pilot Study, Lauren A. Fillet

Eric M. Scandrett Graduate Library Research Prize

Research has demonstrated that adolescents with developmental language disorder (AWDLD) perform more poorly compared to typically developing peers on measures of narrative production. This limitation may not only impact education and social life, but also possibly post-traumatic stress recovery, as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) involves a Trauma Narrative production activity (D’Amico et al., 2022). A limited amount of research has been conducted on adapting TF-CBT for children with intellectual disability, developmental disabilities, and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (D’Amico et al., 2022; Anderson & Cook, 2015). However, there is currently no available research explicitly addressing how TF-CBT can be individualized to …
