Breaking Granularity Barriers: Overcoming I/O Abstraction Limitations For High-Performance Storage Systems, Chen Zhong Jan 2025

Breaking Granularity Barriers: Overcoming I/O Abstraction Limitations For High-Performance Storage Systems, Chen Zhong

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Modern storage hierarchies exhibit performance differences spanning eight orders of magnitude. Each tier in the hierarchy presents fundamentally different optimal access sizes and patterns. Most systems read and write data in fixed-size units across different tiers, typically power-of-2 sizes. It simplifies data management but also suffers from large write amplification when handling small accesses in many real-world workloads. This fundamental disconnect between fixed-size I/O design assumption and real-world usage patterns represents the core challenge.

The storage community has recognized the limitations of fixed-size I/O abstractions and is exploring alternatives, like the new emerging NVMe-KV interface and object-based storage, which aim …

Coping Strategies As Predictors Of Acculturative Stress Among International College Students, Naba Khan Jan 2025

Coping Strategies As Predictors Of Acculturative Stress Among International College Students, Naba Khan

2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive

This study examined how coping strategies influence acculturative stress among international and multicultural college students. A quantitative correlational design was used with 36 participants recruited through convenience sampling at the University of Texas at Arlington. Participants completed four standardized Likert-type scales measuring acculturative stress, general coping, and academic coping. Correlational analyses showed that age was negatively related to acculturative stress and positively related to coping. A mediation analysis using PROCESS Model 4 indicated that coping partially mediated the relationship between age and acculturative stress, accounting for 39% of the variance, R²=.39, F(2, 33) = 10.60, p < .001. Age significantly predicted coping (β=.06, p=.015), while coping marginally predicted acculturative stress (β= -.26, p = .068). Findings suggest that coping strategies play a modest but protective role in reducing acculturative stress, with older participants reporting slightly greater coping and lower stress.

The Alienated Self: A Solo Exhibtion, Kade Winterton

2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive

Exhibiting works is an essential step for every artist; this capstone is a creative research project that explores feelings of alienation and otherness, as well as the multiple causes they stem from, resulting in a body of work ready for exhibition. First, research was conducted on exhibiting and curating works. Next, works by contemporary artists who also explored the same topic were examined. Completed works were curated, and an inventory of what was needed to create an exhibition-ready body of work was defined. After this was done, new works were uniquely created, each starting with an idea and a sketch. …

Legal Expertise And The Litigation Risk From Carbon Emissions, Mahmud Rahman Jan 2025

Legal Expertise And The Litigation Risk From Carbon Emissions, Mahmud Rahman

Accounting Dissertations - Archive

The increasing frequency of climate-related litigation presents significant risks for high-emitting firms, leading many to adopt strategies that reduce legal exposure and associated costs. General Counsel (GC), due to their legal expertise, are increasingly integrated into top management to help firms navigate this complex regulatory environment. Using an ordered logit model, this study finds that firms with higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are more likely to have a GC to their executive team. The presence of a GC in top management leads to a lower likelihood of the firm being fined for violations as well as lower penalties of federal …

Representing Climate Wreckers, Camila Bustos Jan 2025

Representing Climate Wreckers, Camila Bustos

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In recent years, lawyers have become increasingly aware of the implications of the climate crisis for legal practice. Amidst this context, United Nations Secretary General Ant6nio Guterres has urged recent graduates to decline work on behalf of "climate wreckers." This Article examines how professional responsibility rules and principles in the United States should be interpreted on a warming planet, particularly in the context of attorneys representing so-called "climate wreckers" in civil matters. I use the term "climate wrecker" to refer to fossil fuel corporations and trade associations that have engaged in public disinformation campaigns to stall climate action and sow …

From One Prison To Another: The Inordinate Criminalization Of Women Who Kill Abusive Partners And A Proposed U.N. Response, Annalie Buscarino

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

Paradoxically, criminal justice systems around the world punish women who kill abusive partners with inordinate sentences despite explicitly recognizing the victimization that led them to homicide. This Note examines how universally entrenched gender stereotypes lead to such overcriminalization and amount to a violation of women’s rights to equality before the law. This Note then proposes a U.N. resolution offering guidelines for criminal justice systems to craft appropriate judicial responses to women’s survival strategies.

The 1949 Geneva Conventions At 75: Examining The Place Of Non-State Armed Groups, Ezequiel Heffes Jan 2025

The 1949 Geneva Conventions At 75: Examining The Place Of Non-State Armed Groups, Ezequiel Heffes

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

When the 1949 Geneva Conventions were adopted seventy-five years ago, the armed conflict landscape was very different from the one we currently observe. Back then, although non-State armed groups (NSAGs) existed, their regulation was considered to fall (almost exclusively) under the relevant territorial State’s internal laws. Nowadays, on the contrary, every time the international community discusses the application of international law to armed conflict, questions emerge about the role, status, and behaviors of NSAGs. Due to their involvement in the majority of armed conflicts, NSAGs have become immovable actors of the international humanitarian legal scene. Many of these queries arise …

Denile On The Nile: Balancing Ethiopia's Equitable And Reasonable Utilization Of The Nile And Egypt's Desire To Maintain The Status Quo, Tyler Tipton Jan 2025

Denile On The Nile: Balancing Ethiopia's Equitable And Reasonable Utilization Of The Nile And Egypt's Desire To Maintain The Status Quo, Tyler Tipton

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

For nearly one hundred years, Egypt has maintained complete control and utilization of the Nile River under the 1929 Nile Agreement signed by Egypt and the United Kingdom. This agreement was amended in 1959, making Sudan a party but alienating the remaining Nile Basin States. Ethiopia has now posed the greatest challenge to the validity of these Agreements by constructing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. This Note argues that the longstanding bilateral 1929 and 1959 Nile Agreements can no longer maintain their enforceability against the rest of the Nile Basin because they violate customary international water law and infringe on …

Abundance And Other Food Fixations, Margot J. Pollans Jan 2025

Abundance And Other Food Fixations, Margot J. Pollans

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Although most people in the United States no longer devote the majority of their time to food production, processing, and distribution, food remains a daily fixation. This Article explores three driving food fixations--abundance, thinness, and health--and situates each against an inverse fear--scarcity, fatness, and illness, respectively. Mapping these threats onto U.S. food policy, this Article examines, among other policy arenas, food waste policy, nutrition and health claim labeling law, and food additive regulations. Across food policy, these fixations feed what this Article calls the “politics of abundance.” This politics helps to insulate the food industry from deeper systemic reform aimed …

A Supreme Sidestep: The Justices' Artful Dodge On Platform Immunity, Leslie Y. Garfield Tenzer

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The foiled ISIS plot to attack Taylor Swift concerts, coordinated by teens on social media platforms with a significant US presence, illustrates the dangerous consequences of unchecked online content. This incident, coupled with other tragic cases such as the sexual exploitation of a minor lured through Facebook and Tyler Clementi 's suicide following a privacy violation on Twitter highlights the urgent need to reassess 47 U.S.C. § 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Enacted in 1996, this law provides broad immunity to interactive computer services, including social media platforms, shielding them from liability for user generated content. While initially celebrated …

Politicize The Workplace, Benjamin E. Douglas Jan 2025

Politicize The Workplace, Benjamin E. Douglas

City University of New York Law Review

The United States has long been exceptional among liberal states in both its lack of workers’ rights and the undemocratic character of its electoral politics. In this Article, I argue that these two phenomena are related: the power that business managers and owners have over their employees has a depoliticizing, anti-democratic effect. It discourages people with a boss—that is, most working-age people—from speaking their mind, while also preventing them from banding together for mutual benefit and the realization of shared values.

I begin by discussing the United States’ democracy deficit, as illustrated in low voter turnout and the weakness of …

Over the past decade, people have been spending more time online. Almost anything can be done from a laptop or cellphone. This is one of the reasons why e-commerce has been in a constant boom, as it is easier to buy something online and have it delivered to the front door than to go to the store. As more people engage in this activity, e-commerce platforms' challenges are more complicated and need to be addressed faster. However, these challenges escape the company's scope when external factors influence the objective of optimized deliveries, for example, traffic issues or bad weather during …

A Numerical Assessment Of Shock-Raindrop Interaction: An Investigation Of Cavitation Dynamics Driven By Internal Pressure Wave Focusing, Reed Forehand Jan 2025

A Numerical Assessment Of Shock-Raindrop Interaction: An Investigation Of Cavitation Dynamics Driven By Internal Pressure Wave Focusing, Reed Forehand

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

This dissertation investigates the formation and evolution of cavitation within liquid droplets subjected to shock wave interactions, with emphasis on internal pressure wave focusing as a fragmentation mechanism. A numerical framework is developed in which high-resolution Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) simulations resolve shock transmission into spherical, cylindrical, and cubic water droplets across a range of flow conditions. The resulting pressure histories at droplet centers are extracted and post-processed using the Rayleigh–Plesset equation to model the dynamics of spherical vapor bubbles.

The modeling framework is validated against established benchmarks, including canonical shock tube behavior, shock-droplet interaction studies, and experimental cavitation observations. A series …

Manipulated Workplace Hazing And Attributions, Cole B. Treadaway Jan 2025

Manipulated Workplace Hazing And Attributions, Cole B. Treadaway

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

Workplace hazing has scarcely been researched, and when it has, the results have not always aligned. This study seeks to remedy the discrepant findings by examining the importance of hazing severity, as prior operationalizations of hazing severity utilizing the most frequently used and validated measure of workplace hazing do not adequately measure severity, as well as by introducing attribution theory to offer a potential explanation as to why some people respond favorably and others unfavorably to being hazed. This study utilized an experimental 2x2 factorial design with an added control group to examine whether the severity of the hazing and …
