01. Harry Stottlemeier's Discovery (Novel - Ebook), Matthew Lipman

Middle School Curriculum

One day Harry finds himself giving the wrong answer in science class and begins to wonder where he has gone wrong. This reflection soon involves his classmates, who begin to think together about the nature of thinking, inquiry and knowledge. With the help of their teacher, Harry and his classmates discover rules of formal and informal logic, relational logic and hypothetical thinking—-not as ends in themselves, but as tools in helping them understand themselves and their world. Some of the ideas they begin to explore this way include education, mind, rights, religion, art, cause and effect, causes and reasons, and …

Diversity And Risk Assessment Of Phytophthora Spp. Found On Plant Roots Innative Plant Nurseries And Interstate Shipping Nurseries In California, Rebecca Harkness, Karen Suslow, Supriya Sharma, Monique Sakalidis, Timothy Miles, Wolfgang Schweigkofler

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

For many nurseries, it is difficult to diagnose Phytophthora-infected plants in time to prevent disease incursion and spread, especially if the infection occurs on roots and causes no or limited symptoms on aerial plant parts. Rapid, accurate, and specific diagnostic methods can facilitate the identification and removal of infected plants. This study was conducted to investigate whether specific nursery types within California are more likely to have different Phytophthora species and which hosts are more likely to test positive for a Phytophthora species using immunological and molecular diagnostic tools. From fall 2016 to spring 2019, we collected 1,180 root samples …

The Lamb Of God: A Note On The Significance Of Meir Bar-Ilan’S Paper For Latter-Day Saints, Jeff Lindsay Jan 2025

The Lamb Of God: A Note On The Significance Of Meir Bar-Ilan’S Paper For Latter-Day Saints, Jeff Lindsay

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Dr. Meir Bar-Ilan’s paper, “The Heavenly Lamb, Sacrifices on the Heavenly Altar, and the Song of the Lamb,” appearing concurrently in Interpreter, is a welcome contribution from a noted Jewish scholar. Bar-Ilan has called the world’s attention to a remarkable Hebrew manuscript with origins in antiquity, Words of Gad the Seer. Those interested in the relationship between Jewish texts and Latter-day Saint scriptures may also wish to compare the findings in Bar-Ilan’s paper with treatments of the Lamb of God in the Book of Mormon and the Book of Moses.

Prepping For The Last Battle, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2025

Prepping For The Last Battle, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Intellectually acute, deeply learned, brilliantly imaginative, yet popular and easily accessible, C. S. Lewis was arguably the greatest Christian apologist of at least the past century. I believe that Latter-day Saints can benefit greatly from reading him and re-reading him and that those who are unfamiliar with his writing have an enviable treat awaiting them. I’m also convinced, by my own experience, that those who return to his work after having read some of it once, long ago, will find his books at least as good as they seemed on first acquaintance. In fact, they may even find, as I …

Perspectives On The Soteriological Problem Of Evil: Nuancing The “Universalist” Theologies Of Henri De Lubac And Joseph Smith, Timothy Gervais Jan 2025

Perspectives On The Soteriological Problem Of Evil: Nuancing The “Universalist” Theologies Of Henri De Lubac And Joseph Smith, Timothy Gervais

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Since the discovery of the new world by Christian European explorers during the age of discovery, the increasingly global community of the modern age has confronted Christian theologians with difficult soteriological questions. These questions have caused many Christian adherents to abandon conceptions of a uniquely Christian salvation in favor of theological positions of religious pluralism. Other Christian theologians have confronted these issues through creative inclusivist theological constructs that expand the offer of salvation to those who may not have professed Christianity in their mortal life. These inclusivist theologies are uniquely suited to address modern concerns about the salvation of non-believers …

Analyzing Consumer Demand For Electric Vehicles, Galen Rydzik Jan 2025

Analyzing Consumer Demand For Electric Vehicles, Galen Rydzik

Theses & ETDs

To reduce the impacts of climate change, there is an interest in significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions from personal transportation in the United States. The adoption of hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and battery electric vehicles (BEV) are alternatives to internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEV) that generate fewer direct emissions, and U.S. policy is currently poised to support the increased adoption of these vehicles. This study aims to determine underlying factors that influence the purchase of these vehicles and how challenges in the automotive market may limit their efficacy. A panel ordinary least squares consumer demand model is formed using …

Blending Heritage And Innovation: A Practical Study Of How Gen Z Engages With Egyptian Arts And Crafts To Foster Sustainable And Culturally Significant Fashion, Noha Fawzy Aboelros Ph.D, Yara Mostafa Mokhtar

Arts and Design

Egyptian culture features a rich history in arts, crafts, and various traditions, influenced by historical encounters and a range of geographical backgrounds. However, this cultural wealth is facing a serious challenge: surveys indicate that many of Generation Z in Egypt are unaware of its deep meanings and historical significance. This research seeks to address this issue by investigating how new designers can reinterpret cultural aspects for a modern audience, thus promoting both appreciation and preservation. Moreover, examining the creative processes of emerging fashion designers who develop clothing collections inspired by Egyptian culture from regions like Siwa, Sinai, Old Cairo, and …

Weighing Risks: How Families Of Disabled Children Made School Choices During The Pandemic, Rachel E. Fish, Alexandra Freidus, Erica O. Turner Jan 2025

Weighing Risks: How Families Of Disabled Children Made School Choices During The Pandemic, Rachel E. Fish, Alexandra Freidus, Erica O. Turner

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we show how positionality shapes caregivers’ decisions about children’s schooling, by expanding on research on Black families’ educational decision-making (Cooper, 2025; Posey-Maddox et al., 2021) to examine the positions from which families of disabled and multiply-marginalized children make educational choices. The families of disabled children in our sample made holistic, ongoing risk assessments and weighed trade-offs based on their positions during a period of time marked by multiple, on-going “choice moments” (Posey-Maddox, et. al, 2021): the first two years of the Covid-19 pandemic. We show that disability and ableism – intersecting with racism and socioeconomic inequality – …

Who Holds The Mic?: Exploring Image, Control, And Identity In Queer, Tea Jones Jan 2025

Who Holds The Mic?: Exploring Image, Control, And Identity In Queer, Tea Jones

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the ways in which contemporary queer women musicians engage with digital platforms to construct, perform, and circulate their identities across the digital space. Tracing a lineage from the Olivia Records Collective in the 1970s to contemporary artists like Doechii and Chappell Roan, I look at how these artists navigate shifting notions of authenticity, community, and self-presentation—employing DIY strategies across personal websites, social media, merchandise, and music distribution tools. Using affective theory, Susan Sontag’s writings on ‘camp’, and the writings of Audre Lorde and bell hooks as central frameworks for my analysis, I consider how emotional expression and …

Cerebellar Contributions To Vocal - Motor Integration: A Comparative Tractography Study, Alexys Siagel Jan 2025

Cerebellar Contributions To Vocal - Motor Integration: A Comparative Tractography Study, Alexys Siagel

Theses & ETDs

Vocal behavior in mammals ranges from stereotyped, reflexive calls to highly flexible, learned vocalizations. While research has traditionally emphasized cortical and basal ganglia circuits in vocal learning, recent work has highlighted the cerebellum’s expanding role in modulating complex, adaptive motor behavior. This study uses diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based tractography to investigate cerebellar connectivity from five key regions involved in respiration, swallowing, and vocalization—the nucleus ambiguus, periaqueductal gray, basal ganglia, anterior ventral lateral thalamus, and vocal motor cortex - across four species: harbor seal, elephant seal, California sea lion, and coyote. Results revealed that pinnipeds exhibit broader, denser, and more lateralized …

Sectorized Based Investment Strategy During Recessions A Quantitative And Behavioral Analysis Of U.S. Market Performance, 1999–2015, John Scott

Theses & ETDs

This research analyzes the market performance of five U.S. equity sectors including Technology, Retail, Energy, Healthcare and Financials throughout recession periods from 1999 to 2015. The research concentrates its analysis on two significant market downturns: the Dot- Com Crash and the Great Recession by studying sector performance in comparison with the S&P 500 based on financial theory principles as well as behavioral economics concepts. Regular rolling calculations of 5-day standard deviations and 60-day rolling Beta measures for each sector allows evaluation of expected and actual returns by using the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) framework. The methodology provides real-time assessments …

A Study Of The Forecasting Power Of The Yield Curve, John Stayte Jan 2025

A Study Of The Forecasting Power Of The Yield Curve, John Stayte

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an investigation of the United States Treasury yield curve, focusing on its ability to predict economic growth in the 21st century. Academic studies done in the late 20th century brought the yield curve into the spotlight as one of the most accurate indicators of future economic growth available. It has been used as a tool by government and private sector actors to guide decision making since the publishing of those studies. However, it has exhibited odd behavior in recent years, inverting for record periods of time without producing the recession that was forecasted by the inversion. This …

Ritual And Ritualization In The Peony Pavilion, Caroline Young Jan 2025

Ritual And Ritualization In The Peony Pavilion, Caroline Young

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the functions of ritual in Tang Xianzu’s 湯顯祖 (1550-1616) The Peony Pavilion (1598). It moves beyond traditional scholarly focus on romantic love and supernatural elements to analyze how ritual in the play functions both as a mechanism of social confirmation and resistance, and as a means of emotional expression. Written during the late Ming dynasty, when Wang Yangming’s 王陽明 (1472-1529) School of Mind challenged Zhu Xi’s 朱熹 (1130-1200) philosophies on Neo-Confucianism, The Peony Pavilion shows Tang’s critique of Neo-Confucian ritual propriety through its characters’ diverse engagement with ritual. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from Catherine Bell’s concept of …

Spectral Discrete Ordinates Method With Laguerre Polynomial Truncation Of Order N (Spectral-Ltsn) Solutions To The Generalized Linear Boltzmann Equation, Raymond Odian-Floyd Jan 2025

Spectral Discrete Ordinates Method With Laguerre Polynomial Truncation Of Order N (Spectral-Ltsn) Solutions To The Generalized Linear Boltzmann Equation, Raymond Odian-Floyd

Theses & ETDs

This thesis presents a deterministic numerical solver for the Generalized Linear Boltzmann Equation (GLBE), a model that describes nonclassical neutral particle transport in heterogeneous media with spatially correlated structures [6, 10]. In such media, the classical assumption of exponentially distributed free paths fails, necessitating a formulation that explicitly accounts for the distance s traveled since the last collision. The proposed method approximates the angular flux using a spectral expansion in generalized Laguerre polynomials over the free-path variable s, discretizes the angular domain using the discrete ordinates (SN) method [8], and applies a diamonddifference scheme for spatial discretization. The resulting system …

Sexual Trauma And Self-Transcendence: Perceptions Of The Self And Trauma Healing After Sexual Assault, Isabel Reyes Jan 2025

Sexual Trauma And Self-Transcendence: Perceptions Of The Self And Trauma Healing After Sexual Assault, Isabel Reyes

Theses & ETDs

Previous research has explored connections between PTSD and social support, specifically for sexual assault (SA) related PTSD, as well as connections between social support and self-transcendence. Self-transcendence has also been found to be beneficial for overall well-being. The current study assesses the relationship between self-transcendence and Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms, or PTSS. This was done through an online survey sent out to social media groups and forums. The survey consisted of a PTSS scale, a self-transcendence scale, items on mitigating/aggravating factors of their SA(s), as well items on spirituality/religiosity and other demographic items. The results found no correlations between self-transcendence and …

Basics Of Contrast-Enhanced Spectral Mammography, Megan A. Lasher Jan 2025

Basics Of Contrast-Enhanced Spectral Mammography, Megan A. Lasher

Medical Imaging Senior Posters

Contrast-Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM) is an advanced diagnostic technique that combines anatomical and functional breast imaging with the use of iodinated contrast to enhance potential malignant lesion visualization. This capstone presents the fundamental principles of mammography, clinical indications and contraindications, and diagnostic capabilities of CESM compared to traditional mammography. CESM has improved the detection of malignancies, especially in dense breast tissue, as contrast highlights vascular changes associated with tumor angiogenesis. The imaging involves a dual-energy image acquisition, as low-energy is required for structure and high-energy for contrast enhancement. The dual imaging provides a thorough insight into lesion morphology and perfusion. …
