Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Undergraduate computer science programs worldwide struggle to attract and retain underrepresented students for many reasons. Culture, stereotype threats, uneven gender and racial representations, lack of role models, and uncertain career prospects for minority groups are among the many reasons behind this situation. Many computer science programs are trying to change course through strategies to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), aimed at improving outreach, recruitment, admissions, and retention of underrepresented students. EDI approaches may also include modifications to the undergraduate computer science curriculum. However, if not properly planned, these modifications risk amplifying existing stereotypes rather than producing positive change [38]. …

Communication: Skill Development Framework, Claire Scoular, Jonathan Heard, Adam Wardell

Assessment and Reporting

This communication skill development framework was developed to address the challenges associated with teaching and assessing communication. It provides a general definition of communication and describes this construct as it applies in classroom-based learning. This framework synthesises and harmonises existing theory and research on communication. It outlines communication processes along prescribed strands and aspects that are informed by evidence. The strands contained within the framework are 1. Strategising an approach; 2. Conveying information; and 3. Receiving communication. The strands are further broken down into aspects to inform teaching and assessment.

Fresh Looks, Familiar Voices: Balancing Conformity And Differentiation In Young Adult Literature Market, Nami Kim, Jiyoon An

AMTP Proceedings 2025

This study examines optimal distinctiveness strategies in the Young Adult (YA) literature market, analyzing bestseller data across visual representation, author concentration, content diversification, and linguistic evolution. Results reveal increasing visual differentiation in book covers, growing reliance on established authors, gradual expansion of content diversity, and linguistic convergence in book descriptions. These findings demonstrate how publishers dynamically adjust various product aspects to achieve optimal distinctiveness, extending optimal distinctiveness theory to brand-level strategies in cultural industries.

Mental Health In Preprofessional And Professional Circus Artists: A Narrative Review, Melanie I. Stuckey, Stephanie Greenspan, Joanna Nicholas, Veronique Richard, Janine H. Stubbe, Fleur E.C.A. Van Rens

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Mental health has received little attention in preprofessional and professional circus despite the performance demands, cognitive skill, and emotional labor required. This review aimed to consolidate the literature, identify research gaps, and guide practice priorities for mental health in preprofessional and professional circus artists. A narrative review of the literature was conducted based on the International Olympic Committee’s 2019 consensus statement for mental health in elite athletes. Articles reported on mental health symptoms and disorders (n = 13) and interventions (n = 3) in preprofessional and professional circus contexts. Circus artists may experience more symptoms of depression, anxiety, fatigue, and …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are a life-threatening cardiovascular disease for which there is a lack of effective therapy preventing aortic rupture. During AAA formation, pathological vascular remodeling is driven by vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) dysfunction and apoptosis, for which the mechanisms regulating loss of VSMCs within the aortic wall remain poorly defined. Using single-cell RNA-Seq of human AAA tissues, we identified increased activation of the endoplasmic reticulum stress response pathway, PERK/eIF2α/ATF4, in aortic VSMCs resulting in upregulation of an apoptotic cellular response. Mechanistically, we reported that aberrant TNF-α activity within the aortic wall induces VSMC ATF4 activation through the …

The Journey Toward Sustainability: Positive Impact Of Environmental, Social, And Governance Index On Transportation., Doreen Mcgunagle, Laura Zizka, Ron Mau, Patti Clark

Publications

The transportation industry has been criticized for its hefty environmental footprint, questionable social practices, and lack of transparency regarding governance. Thus, more companies have begun including Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues in their strategies. Research has shown that effectively integrating ESG into business models can improve financial performance by tackling environmental, social, and governance challenges. This sustainable progress can be quantified by considering the extent to which the products or services produced by the firm’s harm or benefit social welfare. The current research paper examines ESG and financial performance over time in the Transportation Industry by comparing data from …

Synthesizing Photoprotective Melanin Nanoparticles With A Zinc-Doped Bismuth Oxide Coating To Withstand Uv Radiation, Stefani Capasso Villanueva, Samantha Marie Goldfuss Jan 2025

Synthesizing Photoprotective Melanin Nanoparticles With A Zinc-Doped Bismuth Oxide Coating To Withstand Uv Radiation, Stefani Capasso Villanueva, Samantha Marie Goldfuss

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Ionizing radiation is a factor that is linked to increasing the chances of developing melanoma; specifically ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is produced by the sun. Luckily for us on Earth, there are two natural sources that can protect us from UV, the atmosphere and a polymer produced by our cells called melanin. Both of these sources are able to absorb radiation, shielding our skin from it. However, most UV radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere, and missions done in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) do not benefit from the atmosphere's UV absorbing properties. The aim of this project is to create …

Uconn-Isu-Ilcc Lfp/Gr Battery Aging Dataset, Benjamin Nowacki, Jayanth Ramamurthy, Adam Thelen, Chad Tischer, Cary L. Pint, Chao Hu

REIL Datasets

This dataset encompasses 64 LithiumWerks APR18650M1B cells cycled under 11 unique conditions until they reached their end-of-life at 80% remaining capacity. Cycling tests were interrupted approximately every 3.5 days (~100 cycles, depending on the conditions) to perform a reference performance test (RPT). During the RPT, the cell’s current capacity is measured, and several 100-second-long CC pulses are recorded at three states of charge. The cycling and RPT data are sampled at 1Hz and span over 38 weeks of testing.

The short-duration pulses are shown to have a high correlation with the cell’s state of health, with implementation details provided in …

From Africa To Appalachia: The Tie That Binds, The Reece Museum, East Tennessee State University

The Reece Museum Exhibition Publications

The Reece Museum is home to a communal collection of artifacts that help us remember and retell stories that are important to our identities as a community. The objects we choose to collect, display, and research act as historical documents that form the foundation of the lore that comprises our living narratives, which are “ever evolving, out of the stories of our most recent ancestors” (Bastet and Houlbrook 2023, 188). The movement of collections from personal stories and belongings into collective and institutional artifacts is something I spend a lot of time thinking about.

I learned to enjoy collecting from …
