Fostering Value Cocreation Using An Agency-Style Client Project In Marketing Education, Chiharu Ishida, Peter Kaufman, Mark Gibson, Gary Hunter

Faculty Publications – Marketing

Experiential learning is key to any discipline, and in marketing it is of particular interest to foster mastery and a sense of professionalism through a client project in the classroom. In the marketing education literature, the value of client projects is well documented. Building on the value cocreation (VCC) stream of research and project-based learning, we propose that a multicourse, full-service “agency-style” structure allows classes to realize VCC beyond the traditional client-based project. We define agency-style projects as those in which teams from different courses are assigned unique, interrelated tasks and ultimately offer a comprehensive recommendation for the client’s multidimensional …

Background and purpose: Angiogenesis is a pathological component of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. Current therapies, although successful, are prone to high levels of patient non-response and a loss of efficacy over time, indicating the need to explore other therapeutic avenues. We have shown that an interaction between syndecan-2 and the tyrosine phosphatase receptor CD148 (RTP Type J) results in the ablation of angiogenesis. Here we exploit this pathway to develop a peptide activator of CD148 as a therapy for neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Experimental approach: We tested a peptide (QM107) derived from syndecan-2 in a variety of angiogenesis models and …

The spatial organization of cells within a tissue is dictated throughout dynamic developmental processes. We sought to understand whether cells geometrically coordinate with one another throughout development to achieve their organization. The pancreas is a complex cellular organ with a particular spatial organization. Signals from the mesenchyme, neurons, and endothelial cells instruct epithelial cell differentiation during pancreatic development. To understand the cellular diversity and spatial organization of the developing pancreatic niche, we mapped the spatial relationships between single cells over time. We found that four transcriptionally unique subtypes of mesenchyme in the developing pancreas spatially coordinate throughout development, with each …

“We Don’T Have To Take Things So Seriously”: Humor, Queer Livability, And Homonormativity For A Rural English Language Arts Teacher, Brandon Haskey-Valerius, Ryan Schey

The Rural Educator

Extending and challenging existing research about LGBTQIA+ life in rural educational contexts, this ethnographically informed qualitative study describes how Lulu—a white, cisgender, queer secondary English language arts teacher in a rural, public school in the Midwest—discursively constructed the functions of her humor with respect to teaching, queerness, and their interrelations. Drawing on social theorizations of humor, particularly queer theorizations of humor, this article argues that Lulu described her humor as having three functions: building relationships, facilitating learning, and opening possibilities for queerness. These findings illustrate tensions in that Lulu leveraged humor to build a livable, joyous career in which she …

The Rural Affinity Advantage: Reimagining Schools As Entrepreneurship Incubators, Gregory R. L. Hadley

The Rural Educator

This article, which combines research with lived experience, discusses how youth entrepreneurship education stands as a promising pedagogy in rural contexts. The author situates the research by sharing experiences teaching in rural schools at a time of declining enrollment and rampant outmigration. The article then explores educational pathways, through entrepreneurship education, that rural educators may follow to contribute to the cause of rural sustainability. Entrepreneurialism is positioned as a useful set of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that rural youth can use to better dictate the terms of their future, and schools are envisioned as entrepreneurship incubators.

Bladder cancer (BLCA) genomic profiling has identified molecular subtypes with distinct clinical characteristics and variable sensitivities to frontline therapy. BLCAs can be categorized into luminal or basal subtypes based on their gene expression. We comprehensively characterized nine human BLCA cell lines (UC3, UC6, UC9, UC13, UC14, T24, SCaBER, RT4V6 and RT112) into molecular subtypes using orthotopic xenograft models. Patient-derived, luciferase-tagged BLCA cell lines were cultured in vitro and engrafted into bladders of NSG mice. Tumor growth was monitored using bioluminescence imaging and mRNA-based molecular classification was used to characterize xenografts into molecular subtypes. RNAseq analysis and basal, luminal, and epithelial-mesenchymal …

Functional And Effective Eeg Connectivity Patterns In Alzheimer’S Disease And Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review, Elizabeth Paitel, Christian B. Otteman, Mary C. Polking, Henry J. Licht, Kristy A. Nielson

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Background:

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) might be best conceptualized as a disconnection syndrome, such that symptoms may be largely attributable to disrupted communication between brain regions, rather than to deterioration within discrete systems. EEG is uniquely capable of directly and non-invasively measuring neural activity with precise temporal resolution; connectivity quantifies the relationships between such signals in different brain regions. EEG research on connectivity in AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often considered a prodromal phase of AD, has produced mixed results and has yet to be synthesized for comprehensive review. Thus, we performed a systematic review of EEG connectivity in MCI …

Amidst The Frenzy Over Deepseek Ai, Us Federal Science And Tech Policy Is A Mess Of Internal Contradictions, Yujia He

Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce Faculty Publications

The release of the R1 model by the Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) company, DeepSeek, shocked the US tech industry. Yujia He writes that while DeepSeek’s model may not be quite as superior compared to its competitors as originally thought, the Trump administration has responded to its innovations by further pushing for US leadership in AI. Taking a close look at US research and development policy under the second Trump administration, however, shows the significant disconnect between rhetoric and policy. Federal funding freezes and reduced funding for the National Science Foundation could have dire long-term consequences for research and international cooperation …

Pain Is Modulated Differently Between Females With And Without Patellofemoral Pain: Factors Related To Sensitization, Kemery J. Sigmund, Marie K. Hoeger Bement, Wendy E. Huddleston, Kyle T. Ebersole, Jennifer E. Earl-Boehm

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

Context

Patellofemoral pain (PFP) has poor long-term recovery outcomes. Central sensitization describes central nervous system changes altering pain modulation, which can complicate recovery (poorer prognosis and worse function). Signs of central sensitization include amplified pain facilitation, pain hypersensitivity, and impaired pain inhibition, which can be measured with temporal summation of pain (TSP), pressure pain thresholds (PPTs), and conditioned pain modulation (CPM), respectively. Sex differences exist for these test responses, but female-only PFP investigations of sensitization are uncommon. Understanding pain modulation in females with PFP could improve treatment protocols.

Objective

To determine whether females with PFP exhibit signs of central sensitization …

Locating Consumer Financial Regulation, Nikita Aggarwal Feb 2025

Locating Consumer Financial Regulation, Nikita Aggarwal

Cardozo Law Review

Recent advances in data-driven technology in consumer financial markets, commonly referred to as “fintech,” have resurfaced the question of whether and to what extent data, particularly consumers’ personal data, should be a locus for regulatory intervention in these markets. While innovation in fintech and the accompanying increase in the processing of personal data offer to improve the functioning of consumer financial markets, like all advances in technology, they also come with costs and risks. In 2024, in a move that favored the regulation of personal financial data per se and many of the traditional features of personal data protection regulation, …

Gen Y More Black Corporate Directors, Chaz D. Brooks

University of Richmond Law Review

Corporate diversity has been in the spotlight for decades. Recent efforts have followed years of legal scholarship, arguments on the business rationale for greater diversity, and, more recently, the racial unrest during the summer of 2020. Called by some, a “racial reckoning,” the summer of 2020 catalyzed many corporate declarations on the importance of diversity, and more to the point of this article, the necessity of righting the economic disadvantages of Black Americans. This article looks specifically at one intervention by a corporate player following summer 2020, Nasdaq’s volley to increase corporate diversity through required disclosure. This article reviews the …

Noticing Injunctions, Mae C. Quinn Feb 2025

Noticing Injunctions, Mae C. Quinn

University of Richmond Law Review

Injunctions abound. And yet, they are largely invisible. Beyond the parties to a case in which an injunction is ordered, few outsiders may be aware they exist. And even when an order for injunctive re- lief makes the news, its exact terms may not be widely known. But like legislative enactments and publicly reported appellate decisions, injunctions can carry significant legal implications. Indeed, depending on the nature of the relief declared, such equitable orders can last in perpetuity. And as a practical matter, third parties outside of the litigation may be directly or indirectly impacted by their terms, which prohibit …

Hydrolysis Of The Acetyl-Coa Allosteric Activator By Staphylococcus Aureus Pyruvate Carboxylase, Amanda J. Laseke, Jeremy R. Lohman, Martin St. Maurice Feb 2025

Hydrolysis Of The Acetyl-Coa Allosteric Activator By Staphylococcus Aureus Pyruvate Carboxylase, Amanda J. Laseke, Jeremy R. Lohman, Martin St. Maurice

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Pyruvate carboxylase (PC) catalyzes the carboxylation of pyruvate to oxaloacetate which serves as an important anaplerotic reaction to replenish citric acid cycle intermediates. In most organisms, the PC-catalyzed reaction is allosterically activated by acetyl-coenzyme A. It has previously been reported that vertebrate PC can catalyze the hydrolysis of acetyl-CoA, offering a potential means for the enzyme to attenuate its allosteric activation. However, in the years since this initial report, there has been no further investigation of this phenomenon. The allosteric binding site for acetyl-CoA is now well characterized, enabling more detailed studies on acetyl-CoA hydrolysis at the allosteric site. Here, …
