In 2018, after law enforcement announced it had used a technique called forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG) to identify the Golden State Killer, we conducted a U.S. general population survey and found most respondents supported using FIGG to solve violent crimes. Since then, FIGG has helped close hundreds of criminal cases, but it also has weathered controversies. On FIGG's fifth anniversary, we conducted an expanded, follow-up survey with U.S.-based participants to determine if public opinion had changed and found continued support for FIGG across most applications. The same proportion (91 %) of respondents in the 2018 and 2023 surveys endorsed …

Use Of Immunoglobulin Replacement Therapy In Clinical Practice: A Review, Jibran Ahmed, Yeonjoo Choi, Taeyeong Ko, Joann Lim, Joud Hajjar Feb 2025

Use Of Immunoglobulin Replacement Therapy In Clinical Practice: A Review, Jibran Ahmed, Yeonjoo Choi, Taeyeong Ko, Joann Lim, Joud Hajjar

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Immunoglobulins (Igs) are produced by B lymphocytes and play a key role in humoral immunity. Igs are classified into five isotypes (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, and IgD). Their primary function is to recognize and bind to foreign antigens. When Igs bind to antigens, they facilitate phagocytosis and promote clearance mediated by other immune cells. It is an essential component in protecting the host from outside pathogens. Hypogammaglobulinemia predisposes an individual to severe and recurrent infections. Therefore, replacement therapy is recommended to maintain optimal Ig level. In addition, Igs can modulate immune responses by to neutralizing proteins such as endotoxins or …

Towards A Pedagogy Of Self-Determination: Teaching With Generative Ai In The Library Classroom, Russ Peterson Feb 2025

Towards A Pedagogy Of Self-Determination: Teaching With Generative Ai In The Library Classroom, Russ Peterson

Georgia Library Quarterly

With the swift ascendence of generative AI tools like ChatGPT disrupting the academic and cultural landscape, librarians have debated how to respond to this incredibly consequential technology. From pondering its applications in completing rote tasks to denouncing its ethical conundrums, the debate has mainly centered on whether AI should even be used. In an instruction context, the scholarly conversation has been somewhat limited to how the ACRL Framework can be utilized when teaching with generative AI. What has yet to emerge is an assertive pedagogy that practically engages with generative AI while affirming the agency of students as independent actors …

Pancreatic Cancer Extracellular Vesicles Stimulate Schwann Cell Activation And Perineural Invasion In Vitro Via Il-8/Ccl2, Emory Gregory, Isabel Powers, Azemat Jamshidi-Parsian, Robert J. Griffin, Younghye Song Feb 2025

Pancreatic Cancer Extracellular Vesicles Stimulate Schwann Cell Activation And Perineural Invasion In Vitro Via Il-8/Ccl2, Emory Gregory, Isabel Powers, Azemat Jamshidi-Parsian, Robert J. Griffin, Younghye Song

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Purpose Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, and perineural invasion (PNI), in which cancer cells infiltrate nerves, enables metastasis in most patients. PNI is largely attributed to Schwann cells (SC) that, when activated, accelerate cancer cell migration towards nerves. However, this cancer-associated reprogramming is generally under-appreciated. Additionally, tumor extracellular vesicle (EV) facilitation of cancer aggravation is well documented, but more investigation is required to better understand their role in PNI. Here, we assessed whether PDAC EVs mediate PNI via SC activation using tissue-engineered in vitro platforms and PANC-1 and HPNE human cell lines as models. …

Tale Of Two Requesters: How Public Records Law Experiences Differ By Requester Types, A. Jay Wagner, David Cuillier Feb 2025

Tale Of Two Requesters: How Public Records Law Experiences Differ By Requester Types, A. Jay Wagner, David Cuillier

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

The journalism industry was central to the materialization of U.S. freedom of information (FOI) laws, yet journalists frequently voice dissatisfaction with the state of FOI laws. The study surveyed 330 public records requesters on their experiences with FOI laws, finding public-interest requesters (journalists, academics, nonprofits, and private individuals) reported a significantly different experience, including a lower likelihood of receiving records, than for-profit requesters (commercial requesters and lawyers). For-profit requesters were less likely to believe FOI laws positively impact government accountability or improve society. The findings suggest reassessing whom the laws serve and whether they meet their original democratic objectives.

More than 83 million people in the United States live in primary care shortage areas. As the US healthcare system faces a contracting primary care physician workforce, advanced practice providers are playing an increasingly important role in the delivery of primary care services. In parallel, public discourse regarding the differences in care delivery by advanced practice providers versus physicians has also expanded. In this commentary, we describe 3 main evidence gaps hindering optimal physician and advanced practice provider work organization in contemporary primary care delivery: (1) gaps in understanding the unique and overlapping competencies of each role group, (2) gaps …

Optimization Of Localized Photothermal Therapy Utilizing Liposomal Formulation Of Ir-820 Photoactive Dye, Dinesh Shrestha, Viswanathan Sundaram, Shoukath Sulthana, Danyel Manteufel, Shelby Metcalf, Santosh Aryal

Pharmacy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Current phototherapeutic approaches in cancer treatment include photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic (PDT) therapy, which harness light energy for the activation of a photoactive molecule resulting in the destruction of cancer cells. In PTT, generated local heat kills abnormal cells; whereas, in PDT, a series of biochemical reactions generating reactive oxygen species is responsible for cellular damage. However, a major concern arises in the cellular delivery of an optimal amount of a photoactive molecule required for the desired effect. In this work, we employed IR-820, a new Indocyanine green dye, in a liposomal formulation to maximize its delivery to cancer cells …

Water Reallocation In The West: Government And Markets, Vanessa Casado Pérez Feb 2025

Water Reallocation In The West: Government And Markets, Vanessa Casado Pérez

Utah Law Review

Water is multifaceted: it is a human right, a production input, a sacred element, an investment asset, public property, and a fugitive resource. Its reallocation is inherently difficult because of its natural characteristics and its hybrid nature that combines public ownership with private rights. The future of the U.S. West necessitates the reallocation of water resources, even with potential new water supplies. As climate change intensifies, reallocation will take various forms—all involving government intervention to some degree, from eminent domain to competitive markets. For water markets to function effectively, they require robust institutional infrastructure to prevent issues like imperfect information …

How Tom Brady Saved Baseball: A New Understanding Of Union Decertification In Professional Sports Lockouts, Alec Whipple Feb 2025

How Tom Brady Saved Baseball: A New Understanding Of Union Decertification In Professional Sports Lockouts, Alec Whipple

William & Mary Business Law Review

Labor negotiations in professional sports have always been held at the crossroads of labor law and antitrust law. Players are bound by collective bargaining agreements that are governed by labor law but must negotiate these agreements with multi-owner collectives that typically engage in anti-competitive conduct: namely, locking out players during labor disputes. Furthermore, the non-statutory labor exemption has prevented players from using antitrust remedies to combat these employer actions. Players’ unions have fought back against owners in recent years by pursuing the unorthodox counter-strategy of formally decertifying as a union in order to file antitrust litigation. However, the 2011 ruling …

Canada's Open Work Permit For H-1b Visa Holders: Canadian Opportunism And A Broken American System, Mark Wilson Feb 2025

Canada's Open Work Permit For H-1b Visa Holders: Canadian Opportunism And A Broken American System, Mark Wilson

William & Mary Business Law Review

A new Canadian working permit has been created by the Trudeau government to the detriment of American business and macroeconomic prospects. In the context of labor shortages and a quickly changing American workplace, this Note will forward the findings of governments as well as legal and economic scholars on the benefits of skilled immigrant participation in the American economy. Five options for an American response to this Canadian permit (and for reform to American employment-based immigration generally) will then be presented.

Can You Take Me Higher? How The Big Three Benefit From The Dominance Of Index Providers, J.B. Heaton Feb 2025

Can You Take Me Higher? How The Big Three Benefit From The Dominance Of Index Providers, J.B. Heaton

William & Mary Business Law Review

The entrenched and highly profitable business of licensing indices for passive management is puzzling. The largest equity indices, like the S&P 500 and FTSE Russell 1000, are merely market-capitalization-weighted portfolios without meaningful creative input. The largest passive fund managers could offer and promote “private label” market-capitalization-weighted funds at lower cost—certainly zero and possibly with a basis point or two rebate—at a huge savings for end-investors.

I explore a plausible explanation for the strange dominance of index providers. I explain how index providers are akin to a “hub” in a hub-and-spoke relationship that facilitates a form of price-fixing in the market …

Reviving The Golden Age: Exploring Will Eisner's Legacy Through The Creation Of A Multiversal Sequential Art Story, Levi Atkins Feb 2025

Reviving The Golden Age: Exploring Will Eisner's Legacy Through The Creation Of A Multiversal Sequential Art Story, Levi Atkins

Theses

Levi Atkins’ thesis explores the legacy of Will Eisner, a foundational figure in comic book history, through the creation of a multiversal sequential art story. The project combines a seven-page black-and-white comic with a scholarly analysis of Eisner’s storytelling techniques, focusing on his public domain characters from the Golden Age of Comics. Atkins examines how Eisner’s innovations—such as dynamic panel design, cinematic pacing, and genre blending—can inspire modern narratives. By reimagining characters like The Flame and Dollman within a multiverse framework, the thesis both honors Eisner’s legacy and demonstrates how historical comic forms can evolve to engage contemporary readers.

Simulation-Based Models For Postearthquake Response: A Survey And Research Directions, Abhijit Gosavi, Lauryn A. Spearing, Lesley H. Sneed

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computer simulation is increasingly being used by emergency planners as a tool to improve disaster response given that it can model real-world scenarios, such as earthquakes. Although there has been an increase in simulation research focused on disaster response, much of this literature is from disparate fields and across disaster scenarios. To bridge this gap, this paper surveys simulation-based models for post-earthquake response from the year 2000 onward. Advantages of simulation over closed-form statistical models are discussed. Three main subproblems in post-earthquake response models are explored: (1) service distribution (e.g., food, water), (2) infrastructure restoration (at the building and transportation …

Law For The Rich, Alex Raskolnikov Feb 2025

Law For The Rich, Alex Raskolnikov

Faculty Scholarship

With top incomes and wealth reaching historic highs, scholars and politicians have proposed new taxes and novel legal rules aimed at reversing the emergence of the new Gilded Age. Yet while new taxes target the rich directly by imposing greater burdens only on those with incomes or wealth above multi-million-dollar thresholds, none of the proposed legal reforms do anything of the sort. There appears to be no interest in changing property law, corporate law, antitrust law, or labor law, among others, to have special, more burdensome rules applicable only to the rich. This Article asks: Why not? Why shy away …
