Book Review: There Goes The Neighborhood, Feliciana Lopez-Goodman Feb 2025

Book Review: There Goes The Neighborhood, Feliciana Lopez-Goodman

The Utah English Journal

Rhea’s motives seem simple—save her best friend from eviction and stop the neighborhood from falling apart. As is true for all complex characters, there is more to Rhea, Zeke, and Malachi as they create a fake gang in their South LA neighborhood of Kofa Park. In Jade Adia’s debut novel There Goes the Neighborhood, gentrification is front and center as three teenagers take on the responsibility of saving their neighborhood and their chosen family.

Selective Leaching Of Rare Earth Elements From Complex Rare Earth Ore Using Deep Eutectic Solvents, Frank Agyemang, Mehran Saddat, Zainab Nasrullah, Richard Ladouceur

Metallurgical & Materials Engineering

Rare earth elements (REEs) are valuable for various modern technological applications, including metallurgy, machine building, radio electronics, instrument engineering, nuclear engineering, and manufacturing. The extraction and separation of rare earth elements (REEs) from their complex ores is challenging due to their distinct physical and chemical properties, contributing to their market scarcity. At present, REE recovery utilizes traditional pyro- or hydrometallurgical processes. The overall process in the recovery and separation of individual elements from complex REE systems suffers from high energy demands and the use of many hazardous chemicals that negatively impact the environment. With the growing trend toward a circular …

Process Intensification By Resonant Vibratory Mixing For The Recyclable Samarium - Cobalt Magnets After Chemical Leaching With Deep Eutectic Solvents, Zainab Nasrullah, Frank Agyemang, Mehran Saddat, Richard Ladouceur Feb 2025

Process Intensification By Resonant Vibratory Mixing For The Recyclable Samarium - Cobalt Magnets After Chemical Leaching With Deep Eutectic Solvents, Zainab Nasrullah, Frank Agyemang, Mehran Saddat, Richard Ladouceur

Metallurgical & Materials Engineering

To sustain the circular economy, defense applications, and other renewable technologies, recycling rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical elements from their secondary resources is important. This cause has resulted in rigorous research and development for viable extraction and separation of REEs. Previously, Sm-Co recycling has been done with technologies, which fall under the categories of pyrometallurgy, physical separation, and hydrometallurgy. All these methods have limitations associated with energy, cost, and environment. Reportedly, the chemical leaching technology has successfully recovered and separated Sm-Co. Still, it has limitations associated with slow mass transfer and leaching kinetics, and there is a need …

Insights For The Future Of Car Rental And Ridesharing: Driving Behavior Across Different Levels Of Automation, Pranav Meda, Aubrey Victoria Contreras, Wei-Hsiang Lo, Gaojian Huang, Yue Luo

Mineta Transportation Institute

Autonomous vehicles are reshaping the car rental and ridesharing industries, potentially leading to a unified model of on-demand transportation suitable for both uncommon (e.g., business trips) and daily commuting. An exploratory study of human behavior towards autonomous vehicles can uncover the challenges and opportunities inherent in different levels of vehicle automation. This study aims to (a) identify behavioral differences in drivers operating vehicles at various levels of automation and (b) explore how these behaviors vary with different assistance feature styles, specifically between risky and conservative modes. Human-subject experiments were conducted among twelve participants (aged 21 to 29, including four women) …

Confronting Catastrophic Risk: The International Obligation To Regulate Artificial Intelligence, Bryan Druzin, Anatole Boute, Michael Ramsden Feb 2025

Confronting Catastrophic Risk: The International Obligation To Regulate Artificial Intelligence, Bryan Druzin, Anatole Boute, Michael Ramsden

Michigan Journal of International Law

While artificial intelligence (“AI”) holds enormous promise, many experts in the field are warning that there is a non-trivial chance that the development of AI poses an existential threat to humanity. Existing regulatory initiatives do not address this threat but instead merely focus on discrete AI-related risks such as consumer safety, cybersecurity, data protection, and privacy. In the absence of regulatory action to address the possible risk of human extinction by AI, the question arises: What obligations, if any, does public international law impose on states to regulate its development?

At present there is no scientific consensus as to the …

Reforming Copyright Or Toward Another Science? A More Human Rights-Oriented Approach Under The Rebspa In Constructing A "Right To Research" For Scholarly Publishing, Klaus Beiter Feb 2025

Reforming Copyright Or Toward Another Science? A More Human Rights-Oriented Approach Under The Rebspa In Constructing A "Right To Research" For Scholarly Publishing, Klaus Beiter

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

This article identifies copyright impediments existing in the sphere of science, and then tentatively suggests how such impediments may be overcome. It focuses on scholarly publishing only, and here primarily on digital content, and specifically asks whether expensive commercial scholarly publishers continue to “add value” to research in the digital era. The deficits of copyright law and potential solutions thereto are assessed in the light of the right of everyone “to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications” (REBSPA) as laid down in Article 15(1)(b) of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) of 1966. …

Access To Scholarly Publications In The Global North And The Global South—Copyright And The Need For A Paradigm Shift Under The Right To Science, Klaus Beiter

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

This paper assesses the deficits of copyright law for digital science, and potential solutions thereto, in the light of the right of everyone “to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications” (“REBSPA” or “right to science”), as protected in Article 15(1)(b) of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966. While, in the shorter term, existing copyright law needs to undergo certain reforms (which would all be supported by the REBSPA) to accommodate the needs of science, in the longer term, the right to science, thus the argument here, requires something else – much more, …

What's The Matter With Batna? It's Misleading And Doesn't Help Advance Parties' Important Interests, John Lande Feb 2025

What's The Matter With Batna? It's Misleading And Doesn't Help Advance Parties' Important Interests, John Lande

Faculty Publications

Many dispute resolution experts misunderstand the concept of BATNA (the best alternative to a negotiated agreement), believing that it is the most favorable possible outcome if the parties don’t settle. In fact, BATNA isn’t an expected result. It’s a course of action, not the value resulting from the course of action.

Attorneys often make unrealistic predictions of court outcomes because of inherent uncertainty and cognitive biases. Moreover, parties have many intangible interests that aren’t included in estimates of BATNA values.

This article offers suggestions for attorneys and mediators to advance clients’ interests by better understanding and valuing non-settlement outcomes.

A Statistical Framework Of Watermarks For Large Language Models: Pivot, Detection Efficiency And Optimal Rules, Xiang Li, Feng Ruan, Huiyuan Wang, Qi Long, Weijie J Su Feb 2025

A Statistical Framework Of Watermarks For Large Language Models: Pivot, Detection Efficiency And Optimal Rules, Xiang Li, Feng Ruan, Huiyuan Wang, Qi Long, Weijie J Su

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Since ChatGPT was introduced in November 2022, embedding (nearly) unnoticeable statistical signals into text generated by large language models (LLMs), also known as watermarking, has been used as a principled approach to provable detection of LLM-generated text from its human-written counterpart. In this paper, we introduce a general and flexible framework for reasoning about the statistical efficiency of watermarks and designing powerful detection rules. Inspired by the hypothesis testing formulation of watermark detection, our framework starts by selecting a pivotal statistic of the text and a secret key-provided by the LLM to the verifier-to control the false positive rate (the …

Flow And Heat Transfer Experimental Study For 3d-Printed Solar Receiving Tubes With Helical Fins At Internal Surface, Fouad Haddad, Naznin Nuria Afrin, Jianzhi Li, Peiwen Li, Bharath Pidaparthi, Samy Missoum, Ben Xu Feb 2025

Flow And Heat Transfer Experimental Study For 3d-Printed Solar Receiving Tubes With Helical Fins At Internal Surface, Fouad Haddad, Naznin Nuria Afrin, Jianzhi Li, Peiwen Li, Bharath Pidaparthi, Samy Missoum, Ben Xu

Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

3D-printing technology was applied to fabricate novel solar thermal collection tubes that have internal heat transfer enhancement fins and external surfaces with high solar absorptivity and low emissivity due to the ability to use different materials in one tube. Helical fins were selected to introduce circumferential flow and thus minimize the circumferential temperature difference of the tube that receives sunlight on one side. The structures of the helical fins were previously optimized from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with the objective of low entropy production rate by looking for high heat transfer coefficient and relatively lower pressure loss. High-temperature alloy, …
