Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Crustal architecture of the Vøring Plateau and Vøring Spur in the mid-Norwegian continental margin remains debated because the geophysical data in the area do not uniquely constrain whether the crust is continental, oceanic, or transitional. This study reanalyzes wide-angle ocean-bottom seismometer data from Profile 11-03 across the Vøring passive continental margin using joint travel-time tomography of crustal refractions and Moho reflections. A total of 6,760 first-arrival picks and 542 PmP picks from sixteen instruments were inverted for P-wave velocity and reflector depth. Three starting models were inverted independently to test sensitivity to the initial crustal configuration. The first two used …

Utilizing Diapause In A Sugarcane Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Laboratory Colony As A Cost Saving Measure, W. H. White Jul 2026

Utilizing Diapause In A Sugarcane Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Laboratory Colony As A Cost Saving Measure, W. H. White

Midsouth Entomologist

The ability to rear insects in the laboratory broadens the scope of research opportunities available to the scientist. Our laboratory routinely rears the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), for research in host plant resistance and biological control of this important sugarcane pest. Unfortunately, insect rearing is a costly process. One option to reduce cost is to hold a founder population in diapause during times when insects are not needed. These insects can then be brought out of diapause and allowed to reconstitute the colony. A procedure was developed to put larvae of the sugarcane borer into diapuase, hold these larvae …

A total of 40 participants across all competition levels were included in the study, and both quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and an open-ended survey were used. Responses found that self-esteem levels were moderate. Moreover, one-way ANOVA revealed no significant differences in self-esteem across women following regression …

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Posttraumatic Stress And Chronic Pain, Dominique Noelle Legros Jul 2026

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Posttraumatic Stress And Chronic Pain, Dominique Noelle Legros

ETD Collection

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can co-occur with chronic pain, and this co-occurrence has been linked to negative outcomes such as increased severity of either condition over time. Although theoretical literature has focused on the factors that contribute to this co-occurrence, limited empirical research has examined factors that predict the presence of posttraumatic stress (PTS) and chronic pain together. Thus, the purpose of this correlational study was to expand our understanding in this area by exploring risk (i.e., avoidance coping and anxiety sensitivity) and protective factors (i.e., social support, self-efficacy, and self-compassion) of both PTS and chronic pain while accounting for …

Numerical Range Of Rank-1 Partial Isometries And Elliptical Range Theorem, Lucas Saone Jul 2026

Numerical Range Of Rank-1 Partial Isometries And Elliptical Range Theorem, Lucas Saone

Theses

The Elliptical Range Theorem states that the numerical range of a 2x2 complex matrix A is an elliptical disc with foci at the eigenvalues of A and center at tr(A)/2. Many proofs have been offered for this theorem. In this paper, we provide another one. The strategy we will use is to decompose the matrix A into the sum of rank-1 operators of the form YxX*, where X and Y are in 2-D complex vectors. When analyzing the numerical range of a rank-1 operator of this form, three results can happen: i) the numerical range forms a disc at the …

Interim Measures In International Commercial Arbitration: Revisiting Enforceability, Sophia Kubo Jul 2026

Interim Measures In International Commercial Arbitration: Revisiting Enforceability, Sophia Kubo

Michigan Journal of International Law

Interim measures may offer a solution to obstructive tactics in international commercial disputes. While arbitral tribunals’ authority to grant provisional relief is now widely recognized, enforcement remains legally uncertain and fragmented, undermining the promise of this solution. Acknowledging that proposals for a supranational treaty on enforcement of interim measures or an amendment to existing treaties are unrealistic, this article offers a critical analysis of existing enforcement models– court assistance, exequatur, and mixed approaches–and evaluates them through the lens of legal certainty and efficiency. The article argues that the exequatur model, supported by a dynamic interpretation of the New York Convention, …

Against this backdrop, the article examines the tactics and architectures of violence used to repress land and environmental defenders through the lens of counterinsurgency theory.

The article proposes a typology of counterinsurgent violence including: surveillance; stigmatization; criminalization; arbitrary detention; infiltration; cooptation; …

Institutionalizing The Trade-Labor Nexus, Yueming Yan Jul 2026

Institutionalizing The Trade-Labor Nexus, Yueming Yan

Michigan Journal of International Law

While scholars have extensively explored the evolution of labor provisions in trade agreements, less attention has been paid to the institutional mechanisms that operationalize these provisions. This article addresses this gap by offering a comparative analysis of labor compliance models that are emerging across jurisdictions.

Recognizing that no institutional design is without trade-offs, this article applies the theory of comparative institutional analysis to evaluate existing models—not by asking whether they are (in)effective in the abstract, but: (in)effective compared to what? Specifically, it examines the strengths and limitations of various institutional mechanisms using benchmarks that matter to policymakers, including procedural efficiency, …
