Optical Thickness Determination Of Graphene By Color, Caleb A. Woodcock, Michael S. Crosser May 2025

Optical Thickness Determination Of Graphene By Color, Caleb A. Woodcock, Michael S. Crosser

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

Graphene, and multi-layered graphene, are single atomic layers of carbon, with remarkable electrical properties. This makes it a highly valuable material across scientific and technological fields. Accurate thickness determination is essential, as many of the electrical properties are layer dependent; however, typical methods are slow. This thesis investigates a non-invasive optical method for estimating graphene thickness by correlating RGB color values from microscope images with step height measurements obtained via atomic force microscopy (AFM). Graphene flakes were exfoliated onto a SiO₂/Si substrate, imaged under white light illumination, and analyzed using ImageJ to extract color values. Results show that red-channel contrast …

Televangelism And The Religious Uses Of Television, William E. Biernatzki S.J. May 2025

Televangelism And The Religious Uses Of Television, William E. Biernatzki S.J.

Communication Research Trends

The end of the policy of networks giving free broadcast time to 'mainstream' religious denomination--Catholics, Lutheran, Baptists, etc--has led to radical changes in religious broadcasting in the United States. The organized churches have almost disappeared from most TV channels, while the so-called 'televangelists'--non-demoninational preachers who finance their broadcast by appeals to their viewers--have purchased time on local stations and the networks, as well as vigorously exploiting cable. Some observers even feel that televangelists have become the chief spokespersons for the 'religious viewpoint' in America.

Televangelism has begun to spread outside the United States, to Europe, Latin America, Africa and East …

Popularising Semiotics, Keyan G. Tomaselli, Arnold Shepperson May 2025

Popularising Semiotics, Keyan G. Tomaselli, Arnold Shepperson

Communication Research Trends

Semiotics, deconstructionism, structuralism and postmodernism are words which lurk on boundaries of the consciousness of most of us. But they remain shadowy presences except on the rare occasions when we need to wrestle out of them an explanation of just what they are all about.

In this issue of Trends we grapple with one of them, semiotics. C. S. Peirce, the American pragmatist philosopher who coined the term, saw semiotics as a 'method of methods', useful in many disciplines to clarify their own theory and practice. Everyone uses signs and symbols. Everyone thinks they know the meanings of the signs …

Legislative Discouragement Of Maine's Marine Industrial Growth, John H. Pursel May 2025

Legislative Discouragement Of Maine's Marine Industrial Growth, John H. Pursel

Maine Law Review

At common law the public rights to navigation and fishing could not be alienated by the King. Dry land and the land beneath the sea could be alienated but only so long as the public rights to navigation and fishing were preserved. This common law doctrine was rejected in 1842 by the United States Supreme Court as binding precedent for limiting the alienation of the public domain by the legislatures of the various states. In Martin v. Wadell the Court reasoned that this common law principle was not applicable because the people of the United States through their act of …

Maine's Educational Television Network: Legal Difficulties, Charles L. Cragin Iii May 2025

Maine's Educational Television Network: Legal Difficulties, Charles L. Cragin Iii

Maine Law Review

Maine's educational television network (ETV) cannot pride itself in achieving broad goals and, in fact, cannot attempt to achieve them because of legislation of questionable legal validity which has become an anachronistic barrier to innovations consistent with a keener awareness of the utility of educational television. This note focuses on the state-controlled system servicing northern Maine and points out the conflicts between the system's enabling legislation and the manner in which the system currently operates, and between the enabling legislation and federal laws and regulations. Additionally, it recommends, in a statutory format, the manner in which the system should be …

Hammond, Stephanie Luther, Geovanna Rodriguez, James Sinclair, Rhonda N.T. Nese, Marielena R. Mcwhirter Boisen, Skylar Steffes, James R. Muruthi, John R. Seeley

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Extant literature has established an elevated risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ) youth when compared to their non-LGBTQ peers. Not yet studied is the impact of institutional betrayal on STB among LGBTQ youth. Institutional betrayals refers to misconduct carried out by an institution upon individuals reliant on the institution. Using retrospective data from 229 LGBTQ adults, we examined: (a) whether institutional betrayal was associated with STB among LGBTQ individuals in grades 5 through 12, (b) whether the association between institutional betrayal and STB was significant after controlling for the covariates, and …

Greenlining: A Policy Response To Environmental Racism, Adynn L. Kitchin May 2025

Greenlining: A Policy Response To Environmental Racism, Adynn L. Kitchin

Thinking Matters Symposium

Redlining describes the deliberate actions made in the 1930s by the U.S. Government’s Home Owners’ Loan Corporation(HOLC), in which the race of a neighborhood’s residents was used to measure its degree of desirability. This information was produced through maps, which consequently denied these individuals’ access to mortgages and other financial services. Although redlining was outlawed by the 1968 Fair Housing Act and the 1974 Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the legacy still lingers today. The United States’ Department of Justice launched the Combating Redlining Initiative in 2021, which has since received $107 million in settlements for neighborhoods of color across the …

Ableism And Museum Art Education: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Of Museum-Based Visual Studio Art Teachers, Elizabeth W. Buck

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

All people, including individuals with disabilities, who participate in hands-on visual art can experience various benefits. However, visual studio art teachers, especially museum-based teachers, have various backgrounds that do not always include education or training in serving individuals with disabilities. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how museum-based visual studio art teachers perceived that their training and preparation informed their awareness of ableism and ability to serve students with disabilities in art museums in the New England region of the United States. Twelve museum-based, visual studio art teachers participated in this study through semi-structured interviews. Through …

Numerical Investigation Into The Effect Of Duct Use On The Performance Of Controllable Pitch Propellers, Ahmet Yurtseven May 2025

Numerical Investigation Into The Effect Of Duct Use On The Performance Of Controllable Pitch Propellers, Ahmet Yurtseven

Seatific Journal

In this study, CFD methods are used to solve the complex flow around a CPP propeller with ducts. It is aimed to investigate the performance differences between ducted and non-duct propeller versions. In particular, the values of pitch changes and blade spindle torques at different advance coefficients were determined. STAR-CCM+, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, was used in the study. The k-ε model was preferred to predict turbulence in the flow. In addition to the coefficients of performance such as thrust coefficient, torque coefficient and propeller efficiency, the study also examined the blade spindle torque that provides the …

Audio-Video Synchronization Using Machine Learning, Avichal Rakesh, Mozart Alexander Louis

Defensive Publications Series

Audio and video components of a video can fall out of alignment for a variety of reasons, e.g., since they are recorded separately, due to encoding errors, etc. The viewing experience is degraded when audio and video are out of sync. Manual synchronization is expensive. This disclosure describes the use of a machine learning model to determine synchronization information for audio and video streams that are to be synchronized. The audio and video streams are provided as input to a multimodal model, e.g., a large language model that can handle both audio and video. The model is tasked with outputting …

Empirical Study On The Correlation Between Social Media Usage And Self Esteem, Parbatti Boodhoo May 2025

Empirical Study On The Correlation Between Social Media Usage And Self Esteem, Parbatti Boodhoo

Publications and Research

Social media is a major part of everyday life for most young adults, and its effects on mental health, especially self-esteem, have become a growing area of research. Some studies have found that using platforms like Instagram or TikTok can negatively impact how people see themselves, especially when they compare their lives to others online (Magner, 2018). Others have shown that the way people use social media matters, passively scrolling may lower self-esteem, while interacting positively with others could have the opposite effect (Shashwat & Singh, 2024). On the other hand, social media can also help people feel more connected …

Youth-Driven Approaches To At-Home Dbs Hiv Monitoring: The Role Of Privacy, Clinical Trust, And Digital Tools, Cynthia Wen, Sitaji Gurung

Publications and Research

Dried blood spot (DBS) biosampling offers a convenient at-home option for HIV viral load monitoring, especially for youth facing clinic access barriers. This study explored youth perspectives on DBS through semi-structured interviews (n=6) from an NIH-funded project. Key themes emerged. Youth expressed a preference for discreet access and privacy was critical. They preferred clinic-based kit pickup and return to avoid stigma. Trust in clinic-promoted kits was important, as healthcare provider endorsement increased the credibility of the kits. Digital tools supported usability and awareness, with QR codes, video tutorials, and social media playing a significant role. Additional insights included the need …

Application Of Bioactive Materials Primary Cilia As A Novel Delivery Vehicle, Ayan K. Barui, Farideh Amirrad, Vansh Goel, Sharareh Ohadi, Rajasekharreddy Pala, Ashraf M. Mohieldin, Andromeda M. Nauli, Surya M. Nauli

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Primary cilia are hair-like structured cell organelles functioning as cellular antennae with chemosensory and mechanosensory roles. Dysfunction of cilia results in ciliopathies, including renovascular diseases (polycystic kidneys, hypertension, aneurysm), mental impedances (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia), metabolic diseases (obesity, developmental skeleton defects), blindness, and so on. With a diameter of 150 nm, cilia can be cleaved, released and circulated in the body as injury biomarkers. We here assessed the potential use of isolated cilia as a novel delivery vehicle. Cilia were isolated from renal epithelial cells, and a specific-targeting chemotherapeutic was designed on the cilia. The data show a remarkable …

A Study Of Social And Emotional Learning Provision To Kindergarten Students In A Rural School Through The Lens Of Whole Child Development, Shirley Spiegel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this Improvement Science Project was to take appraisal of a rural school district’s current approach for developing the whole child in kindergarten. Three prominent context-based child development theories serve as the framework for this study in determining if there is evidence in practice for support of whole child development, or if those practices or components of the current practices do not demonstrate clear evidence for whole child development, according to the theoretical framework. Conducted through the lens of these whole child development theories, this study centered on the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) provision to kindergarten students …
