Submandibular Masses In Pediatric Patients: A Case Report, Emma High, Madison Morgan, Macy Rowan, Carol Medina

Research Day

Submandibular masses in pediatric patients present a diagnostic challenge due to their varied etiology, including congenital, inflammatory, and neoplastic causes. Submandibular sialoadenitis is a rare but important cause of submandibular masses in pediatric patients, often presenting with localized swelling, pain, and inflammation. We report the case of a 9-year-old male who presented with progressively enlarging right-sided posterior submandibular swelling that failed outpatient therapy despite two separate urgent care visits resulting in prescription for augmentin and two separate diagnoses; otitis media and parotitis. At Colquitt Regional Medical Center Emergency Department US and CT imaging studies were performed which supported a diagnosis …

The Role Of Regional Integration Organizations On Energy Transition And Sustainable Development In Africa, Neba Ridley Ngwa

Journal of African Policy Studies

The Paris Agreement represents a pivotal milestone in multilateral efforts to combat climate change and facilitate energy transition globally. As a comprehensive international legal framework, it outlines commitments for nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance resilience to climate impacts. This research examines the key role of regional and sub-regional integration organizations in facilitating energy transition and promoting sustainable development across Africa. As the continent grapples with the dual challenges of energy crisis and climate change, the African Union and its specialised agencies have emerged as key players in enhancing energy cooperation among member states. Though previous scholars have …

And what strategies have civil societies used to harness the potentials in social movements for sustainable democratization? Through a political economy approach, oral interviews with NGO leaders, leaders of human rights and pro-democracy activists, interviews with some citizens, and use of journals, newspapers, magazines and reports, this study interrogates and documents …

Women And Men In The Media, Margaret Gallagher May 2025

Women And Men In The Media, Margaret Gallagher

Communication Research Trends

Since the time of Adam and eve no theme has held the attention of storytellers and their audiences more consistently than that of sexuality and the relationship between the sexes. It is multifaceted, ever-changing, and so deeply involves everyone emotionally that few other subjects present such a challenge to sociological analysis. All would have to admit, however, that the past century has seen unprecedented changes in the role and status of women in relation to men. The mass media have played their own part in this evolution, creating images which have helped to delineate and define its shifting currents.

Communication Ethics, Clifford G. Christians

Communication Research Trends

The mulberry trees stirred, and the prophet Ezekiel saw dead bones coming to life. The observer of mass communication ethics these days might feel like Ezekiel. It is a growth industry. The snippets of a decade ago have become a major body of scholarship.

The scope of interests is expanding. Cross-cultural concerns are growing. The earlier focus on printed news has widened to include electronic media, data management, advertising and public relations. A generic narrative ethics is beginning to appear. Theological ethics has not yet reached its potential, though it contributes more of late. Social responsibility gets some of the …

Journal of Health Research

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major global health concern, with malnutrition being a leading cause of death among Thai cancer patients. Misinformation, lack of knowledge, and false beliefs contribute to nutrition-related issues. Online platforms offer an alternative for patient education. This study aimed to compare the impact of two nutritional education tools, the Nutrition Educational Prototype based on Smartphone Web Applications (NEPSA) and standard hospital leaflets with nutrition counselling, on nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and practices in malnourished patients with CRC undergoing chemotherapy.

Method: This quasi-experimental study employed pretest and posttest designs with a nonequivalent control group. Twenty-eight …

The Role Of The Maine Law Court In Abrogating The Common Law Doctrines Of Governmental And Charitable Immunity From Tort Liability, Maine Law Review May 2025

The Role Of The Maine Law Court In Abrogating The Common Law Doctrines Of Governmental And Charitable Immunity From Tort Liability, Maine Law Review

Maine Law Review

During the last decade the Maine Law Court refused to overrule two common law doctrines which effectively insulated certain tortfeasors from liability for their negligent conduct. The purpose of this comment is to determine if the public policy issues embodied in the immunity rules and the reliance interests attributed to those rules by the Law Court justified the radical departure from the court's traditional role of deciding cases properly before it.

Toward The Wired Society: Prospects, Problems, And Proposals For A National Policy On Cable Technology, Gary H. Gerlach

Maine Law Review

The city is already encroaching on the countryside in a modest cultural sense. Today many remote New England villages receive more channels of New York City television, and receive them more clearly, than do most residents of the five boroughs of the great city. This anomaly is because of a relatively new and still evolving technology, popularly called cable television. This article primarily addresses the broad problems now confronting the American people on how to devise wise national policies that will put this technology of the new communications to its best uses for the most people. In short, how is …

Lloyd Corp. V. Tanner: A Shopping Center Open For Business But Not For Dissent, Maine Law Review

Maine Law Review

Self-government in the United States is facilitated by adherence to the traditional principles of freedom of speech and private property. The first requirement of a self-governing community is an electorate with sufficient knowledge to regulate its own affairs wisely. Hopefully, that requirement is fulfilled by free interchange of ideas. But the viability of free speech depends in part on the concept of private property, which secures to the individual an area of insulation from societal influences. Both free speech and private property are constitutionally protected from governmental interference, the former by the First Amendment and the latter by the Fifth …

Postjudgment Procedures For Collection Of Small Debts: The Maine Solution, Maine Law Review May 2025

Postjudgment Procedures For Collection Of Small Debts: The Maine Solution, Maine Law Review

Maine Law Review

Debtors' rights and the due process of debt collection have received increasing attention recently in legislative as well as judicial spheres. There have been many efforts to rectify basic contractual inequities, to abolish summary prejudgment remedies and to limit extra-judicial collection abuses. However, comparatively little scrutiny has been focused on postjudgment or post-hearing remedies in the later stages of the collection process. Until recently, Maine's legal remedies for postjudgment debt collection were notorious for their harshness. Jail, the principal sanction, was freely used as a creditors' club to make debtors settle claims. Although inability to pay was not in itself …

Nigeria's Federalism And The Threat Of Secession: The Case Of The Ipob, Emmanuel Oladipo Ojo, Osadola Oluwaseun Samuel

Journal of African Policy Studies

Since 2015, there has been renewed agitation for the creation of the Republic of Biafra. This article focuses on one of the two organizations involved in that struggle: The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB, the second being the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB). The Federation of Nigeria, inaugurated on 1 October 1954 under the Lyttelton Constitution, which became operational on that date, has been assailed by a plethora of centrifugal pulls and secession threats since 1950. While many of these threats were resolved politically and at round tables, a few had involved armed confrontation …

Constitution Making Under Governments Of National Unity: The Zimbabwean Case 2009-2013, Tobias Guzura

Journal of African Policy Studies

Constitutions are the bedrock of democratic governance in the contemporary world and any state claiming democratic credentials needs to base its claims on a good constitution and positive constitutionalism. In the period from 2009 to 2013, Zimbabwe was ruled by a negotiated Government of National Unity (GNU). The government, a result of inconclusive presidential elections in 2008 was tasked with writing a new constitution to take the country out of the crisis that it has undergone since the turn of the century. The GNU duly set upon this task and wrote the constitution which was passed by parliament in May …

Reproductive And Sexual Autonomy In Hillary Jordan’S When She Woke, U. H. Ruhina Jesmin May 2025

Reproductive And Sexual Autonomy In Hillary Jordan’S When She Woke, U. H. Ruhina Jesmin

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper uses the content analysis method and theory of reproductive politics to explore how state-sponsored reproductive policy criminalizes reproductive rights and erodes sexual autonomy in Hillary Jordan’s 2011 dystopian novel When She Woke. The novel depicts a future world in which abortion is criminalized and a genetic technology called “melachroming” is used by the federal government to violate the human rights of the main character, Hannah Payne. The fundamentalist interpretations of religion, coupled with political agenda and public policy, equate abortion with genocide, thus criminalizing the act and punishing women with a genetic alternation of skin color. These …

How Did Women In India Fare During The Covid-19 Pandemic? A Study Of Work-Life Balance, Bigi Thomas May 2025

How Did Women In India Fare During The Covid-19 Pandemic? A Study Of Work-Life Balance, Bigi Thomas

Journal of International Women's Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted women globally, resulting in numerous work-life balance (WLB) challenges. The intersection of paid employment and familial obligations inside the household has compelled Indian women to assume many tasks. Married women encounter heightened stress due to the specific gender roles that society imposes upon them within a patriarchal sociocultural context; these gender roles were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, hindering Indian women in their management of domestic duties and reconciliation of personal and professional disputes. The pandemic’s fusion of professional and familial domains disrupted Indian women’s transition between home and work environments, leading to indistinct …

Setting The Record Straight: Recording The Global Contribution To Education Research Of Panamanian Scholar Etilvia Arjona Chang, Nanette Archer Svenson

Journal of International Women's Studies

As documented extensively, the academic publications and accomplishments of women scholars—particularly those from developing regions—are underrepresented in global and national literature, databases, and indices. This feminist biographical case study explores and makes visible the life and work of Panamanian Dr. Etilvia Arjona Chang and her global contribution to education research. This article describes her earlier decades devoted to expanding and modernizing the translation and interpretation (T&I) discipline worldwide. It also examines her development of Panama’s first education research programs in later decades of her career and how her previous T&I experience provided the foundation for present-day Panamanian education research. Female Embodiment And Corporeality In Sanskrit Prognostication: A Study Of The Bṛhatpārāśarahorā Śāstra, Tara Sheemar

Journal of International Women's Studies

The connection between traditional Indian knowledge systems of astrology, medicine, and drama has been noted by scholars. Of particular concern for gender analysis is the reading of lakṣaṇas (bodily marks) that developed in astrology. The coded knowledge of astrology—the sharing of fundamental meanings with other Sanskrit knowledge systems—became a significant tool for gendered prognostication, which buttressed normative gender roles for men and women. In this paper, I attempt to unravel the code of lakṣaṇas given in the Bṛhatpārāśarahorā Śāstra, a text composed between the 7th and 9th centuries CE. The focus will be on the sections of the text …

The Representation Of Women Politicians In Pakistani English-Language Newspapers, Awais Rubbani, Sharifah N. H. Alkaff

Journal of International Women's Studies

Gender representation, in terms of both narratives and images of women in the public sphere, is an indicator of gender equality in a society. In particular, mass media plays a significant role in shaping the perceptions of the public towards women. Our present study aims to investigate the representation of women politicians in two Pakistani English-language newspapers in 2012, 2017, and 2022: Dawn and The Nation. With the rise of quotas reserved for women in both the National and Provincial Assemblies in Pakistan, our study hopes to analyze how often and in which news genre that women politicians are …

Bama’S Sangati: A Collective Resistance To Oppression And Attitudinal Ambivalence Towards Dalit Women, Sarani Ghosal Mondal

Journal of International Women's Studies

Originally published in Tamil in 1994 and translated into English by Lakshmi Holmström in 2005, Bama’s[1] Sangati: Events is a collection of life narratives from Dalit women of the Paraiya community in Tamilnadu, South India. Each narrative depicts an event of exploitation from the perspective of an adolescent girl, Sevathi. Her myriad questions to her grandma uncover Dalit problems in India. These agonized questions relating to injustice, caste-based discrimination, and violence mirror Dalit women’s vulnerability in Indian society. This study analyzes the narratives of strife, anger, and forced negotiation in a caste/class-ridden patriarchal society. Premised on gender-caste-class dynamics, …

Promoting Women’S Leadership In Climate Resilience: A Strategy For South Asia, Naresh Prajapati, Deepak Kumar Chauhan May 2025

Promoting Women’S Leadership In Climate Resilience: A Strategy For South Asia, Naresh Prajapati, Deepak Kumar Chauhan

Journal of International Women's Studies

South Asia is acutely vulnerable to climate change due to its heavy dependence on agriculture, forestry, and ocean resources. Women in this region are disproportionately affected by climate change due to systemic inequities. Despite these vulnerabilities, women possess critical ecological knowledge and leadership potential that can transform climate resilience efforts. However, their participation in climate governance remains significantly constrained by entrenched digital exclusion, tokenistic political representation, inequitable land ownership policies, and the invisibility of women’s unpaid labour in climate adaptation. This study highlights current constraints on women’s participation and the future potential of women leaders to shape inclusive and effective …

Sociocultural Impediments To The Economic Empowerment Of Women: An Analysis Of The Toy Industry In Etikoppaka, Balireddy M. N. Teja, Moksha Singh

Journal of International Women's Studies

Research indicates that women’s involvement in income generation does not always result in gender equality or empowerment. With this understanding in mind, this qualitative study delves into the socioeconomic changes created by the highly regarded toy industry in Etikoppaka village in India, which predominantly relies on women’s labor. Exploratory research was designed to gather information from forty primary respondents who are women actively employed in the industry. We applied Hakim’s preference theory and Malhotra’s model of empowerment to construct comparison criteria for theoretical underpinning. The study’s outcomes reveal that a significant number of women in the village are employed in …

The Madonna - Whore Complex, Rhiya S. Ashman May 2025

The Madonna - Whore Complex, Rhiya S. Ashman

Persimmon Creek

In this work, I wanted to explore the literature/media trope of the Madonna/Whore complex, specifically when it comes to Black women in media. The Madonna Whore complexes illustrate how women are often written into one of two extremes - they are either extremely pure, innocent, and childlike (The Madonna), or they are sexual, rebellious, and seductive (The Whore). The piece is full of symbolism, including the materials used to make it. I wanted to illustrate these extreme yet two dimensional ways these women were portrayed by creating them in flat paper, with no faces, to show how they are still …
