Feasibility Of Predicting Incidental Gallbladder Cancer (Fp-Igbc): A Protocol For A Uk Multicentre Feasibility Diagnostic Modelling Study For Incidental Gallbladder Cancer In Adult Cholecystectomy., Oliver Brown, Thomas Mindos, Lexy Sorrell, J. Latour, Somaiah Aroori

Peninsula Medical School

Background: In the UK, gallbladder specimens are routinely sent for histological examination to exclude incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC) and other clinically relevant pathology. Although rare, gallbladder cancer requires early detection to improve outcomes. Existing risk stratification tools miss cases or are not tailored to the UK population. Predicting Incidental Gallbladder Cancer (P-iGBC) is an adaptive, multicentre, cross-sectional, trainee-led collaborative study designed to develop a diagnostic score to stratify iGBC risk in adult cholecystectomy. This feasibility phase, fP-iGBC, evaluates the methods and procedures of the overall study, ensuring its robustness and practicality before full-scale implementation. Methods: fP-iGBC comprises an internal pilot …

Identity And The Russian-Ukrainian War: Evidence From The American Community Survey, Matthew Holian, Oleh Wolowyna May 2025

Identity And The Russian-Ukrainian War: Evidence From The American Community Survey, Matthew Holian, Oleh Wolowyna

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 led to significant changes in ethnic identity and language preferences among U.S. residents. We observe an 18.9% increase in U.S.-born individuals identifying as ethnic Ukrainian from 2021 to 2022 and a 6.8% decrease for U.S.-born ethnic Russians, which cannot be attributed to prior trends or sampling variation. The changes among Ukrainians were more pronounced among college graduates and those living in Democratic-leaning counties. We document an increase in the use of the Ukrainian language among Ukrainian immigrants, which cannot be explained by prior trends or immigration patterns. We test for labor market discrimination, …

On The Use Of Nonlinear Electrophoresis For Separating Particles And Cells In Insulator-Based Electrokinetic Systems, Alaleh Vaghef-Koodehi May 2025

On The Use Of Nonlinear Electrophoresis For Separating Particles And Cells In Insulator-Based Electrokinetic Systems, Alaleh Vaghef-Koodehi

Theses

The increasing demand for efficient separation processes of micron-sized particles, including microorganisms, highlights the importance of developing low-cost, non-labor-intensive, and time-efficient techniques. Insulator-based electrokinetic (iEK) systems have proven to be a practical alternative to bench-scale methodologies such as centrifugation and membrane filtration. Several studies have reported the separation of microparticles by employing direct current (DC) voltages. However, all of them have overlooked the phenomenon of nonlinear electrophoresis (EPNL) and its role in the electrokinetic migration of particles. This study combines mathematical modeling and experiments to extend the capabilities of iEK systems. This dissertation has four aims: (1) to separate microparticles …

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is widely recognized for its efficacy in treating diabetic wounds, but the mechanisms involved in the wound healing process remain unclear. By examining changes in blood cytokine levels as molecular signaling precursors, we aim to provide a comprehensive cytokine profile to support adjunctive therapy research and clinical applications. A diabetic mouse wound model was established to compare cytokine profiles between NPWT-treated and standard dressing groups, identifying key signaling candidates that may facilitate wound healing. By integrating normal mouse data with large-scale cytokine analysis, we developed a time-stratified NPWT approach to track acute-phase cytokine fluctuations in …

The Role Of Popular Culture In Decolonial Transformative Learning: A Racially Minoritized Adult Educator's Journey, Riyad Shahjahan May 2025

The Role Of Popular Culture In Decolonial Transformative Learning: A Racially Minoritized Adult Educator's Journey, Riyad Shahjahan

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

While a growing body of literature examines the role of popular culture in transformative learning, much of it centers on fostering transformative experiences among learners, rather than educators themselves. This paper addresses that gap by exploring how popular culture enhances transformative learning for racially minoritized adult educators. Drawing from my experiences as a graduate instructor at a predominantly white institution, I reflect on how engaging with popular cultural texts facilitated my own transformative learning within my teaching practice. Grounded in decolonial theory, which emphasizes the inclusion of Indigenous and marginalized knowledges while confronting contemporary colonial oppressions, my reflexive approach highlights …

Making "Monsters" Of Women: A Case Study Of Tradwives And Childless Cat Ladies, Greta Gustafson

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

The presentation, once a podcast, examines how the dialectic of "tradwives" and "childless cat ladies" reflects greater us vs. them dynamics described by "Monster Theory". To begin, the presentation explores the rise of these two reductionist caricatures and their influence on political divisiveness. The presentation also addresses how the us vs. them politics these caricatures contribute to distract from real societal progress and proposes what could be done about it.

Such Sights To Show You: Exploring Womanhood Through Horror, Kayla Brabant May 2025

Such Sights To Show You: Exploring Womanhood Through Horror, Kayla Brabant

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

Research for this presentation began as an investigation into why women are drawn to the horror genre, specifically to horror films. Findings suggest that the genre is the only mainstream genre in which women are represented roughly as often as men, and that horror offers a chance for women to vicariously explore the many facets of womanhood in a controlled environment.

Populism, Economic Cooperation, And Human Rights In Latin America, Justina Rodriguez Carrozzo

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

I studied how modern populist leaders in Latin America, specifically Jair Bolsonaro and Javier Milei, impact economic cooperation and human rights. Through historical comparison and analysis of recent policies, I found that while these leaders promise national strength, their actions often weaken regional ties and democratic protections.

Enhancing Management Of Hospitalized Patients With Opioid Withdrawal, Christine Aliory

Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers

Opioid use disorder (OUD) impacts over 1.2 million people in the United States. This population suffers from multiple comorbidities which can result in the need for hospitalization. Managing opioid withdrawal in hospitalized patients is challenging. Assessment tools like the Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS) help healthcare providers determine appropriate interventions to alleviate withdrawal symptoms for these patients. This quality improvement project aimed to decrease the number of incidents of violent behaviors and/or patients leaving the hospital against medical advice (AMA) during opioid withdrawal and enhance nurses’ ability to perform the COWS assessment. Organizational data from a 402-bed acute care hospital …

Forced Adoptions Of Ukrainian Children From An International Human Rights And Humanitarian Law Perspective, Ines Gillich May 2025

Forced Adoptions Of Ukrainian Children From An International Human Rights And Humanitarian Law Perspective, Ines Gillich

Pace International Law Review

The article analyzes the legality of the Russian practice of forced adoptions of Ukrainian children from an international human rights and humanitarian law perspective. It argues that while the relocation of children from conflict zones to safe areas is generally lawful under international law, these measures must only be temporary, and persons abducted must be returned as soon as possible. This article also argues that human rights obligations must be read in the light of international humanitarian law, which is the lex specialis applicable in armed conflicts. The article concludes that any permanent measures against the will of the children …

Puerto Rico's Coast: Preservation Through Positive Obligations On Property Owners And The State In The Context Of Climate Change, Jaime Villeta-Garcia May 2025

Puerto Rico's Coast: Preservation Through Positive Obligations On Property Owners And The State In The Context Of Climate Change, Jaime Villeta-Garcia

Journal of Comparative Urban Law and Policy

The rise in sea level, the obvious rampant coastal erosion and the uncertain future due to climate change urge the need to rethink the coast, through property and administrative law. The security of life, property and the fair and orderly use of the ultra-valuable resources that is the coast depend on a new concept for properties in the coastal zone and its effective execution by a conscious and responsible State. Centered on the community of Ocean Park in San Juan, Puerto Rico, it’s no longer a question of whether coastal property rights can contribute to safeguarding the coast, but rather …

La Diglossie Et L’Enseignement De La Langue Amazighe Au Maroc, Abdelaziz Yannous, Fatima Agrou

Journal of Amazigh Studies

‘Amazigh Literary Space’: Intersection And Hybridity Across Languages And Media, Daniela Merolla May 2025

‘Amazigh Literary Space’: Intersection And Hybridity Across Languages And Media, Daniela Merolla

Journal of Amazigh Studies

My contribution will focus on multilingualism and multimedia in the ‘Amazigh literary and cinematographic space’ (Merolla De l’art, “Amazigh/Berber Literature”). Examining this notion coined in the 1990’s (Merolla “Gender and Community”) allows us to reflect on ongoing debates regarding North African literatures in postcolonial contexts. It also helps to see that Amazigh/Berber literature solely defined as Amazigh-language production tends to isolate works and performances that engage with multiple languages and literary traditions, cultural intersections, and hybridization in North Africa and its diasporas. The discussion is contextualized within the historical development of what is sometimes referred to as the “North …

The Chesapeake Bay Environmental Forecasting System, Marjorie A.M. Friedrichs, Aaron Bever Ph.D., Susanna Musick, Karen Hudson

Benefits of Ocean Observing Catalog (BOOC)

The Chesapeake Bay Environmental Forecast System (CBEFS) uses a 3D coupled physical-biogeochemical model to simulate water quality in the Chesapeake Bay. The 3-D model is forced by weather conditions (winds, air temperature, etc.), river inputs, and an open boundary in the Atlantic Ocean. CBEFS is an entirely automated system that runs nightly in a high-performance-computing environment, to provide updated information to stakeholders each morning. Automated comparisons to observed data are conducted each morning to ensure CBEFS is performing as expected. The 3-D model has 20 layers in the vertical and a horizontal resolution of 600 meters, resulting in 1.2 million …
