Using Cutting Immersion To Apply Rooting Hormone For Propagation Of Camellia Japonica., Tanner R. Marlow, Richard L. Harkess
Using Cutting Immersion To Apply Rooting Hormone For Propagation Of Camellia Japonica., Tanner R. Marlow, Richard L. Harkess
Honors Theses
Few varieties of Camellia japonica have a high success rate in rooting cuttings. Once rooted, the subsequent growth rate is slow and differs by variety. This makes the commercial production of Camellia challenging. Previous research on C. japonica propagation confirms that using a basal cut dip in indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) is effective in rooting C. japonica. However, basal dip applications can be time-consuming. Foliar applications and total cutting immersion are more efficient methods of rooting hormone application, but they have not been thoroughly tested with Camellia. The objective of this research was to determine the effective IBA concentration applied as …

The Seed Pile Project - A Reflection, A. Haven Kiers, Caroline Larsen, Kate Hayes, Sahar Sadegh Malak Abadi, Ashley Hong, Billy Krimmel
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
We conducted a community-science project in Northern California - the Seed Pile Project - with three broad goals: 1) to test which locally-native, seed-dispersed plants would thrive without intervention in human-occupied spaces, 2) to engage the public with the often-ignored biodiversity along our roadsides, sidewalks, and other highly-disturbed spaces, and 3) to create community around rewilding our urban areas. We conducted the project initially as a pilot project in 2020-2021, then as a community-science project in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023. The project design was intentionally simple to make it accessible for participants of all ages: participants received free packets of native, …

Advancing Recovery Of Endangered San Joaquin Kit Foxes Through Urban Rewilding, Brian L. Cypher, Erica C. Kelly, Jaime L. Rudd
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
San Joaquin kit foxes (Vulpes macrotis mutica) are endemic to arid habitats in the San Joaquin Valley region of central California. This species is listed as Endangered due to profound habitat loss throughout its range caused by agricultural, industrial, and urban development. Interestingly, kit foxes currently occur in three cities with the population in the city of Bakersfield being large (several hundred foxes) and self-sustaining. Demographic and ecological attribute values for this population are among the highest observed in San Joaquin kit fox populations. Loss of natural habitat is still occurring and additional urban kit fox populations could …

The Roles Of Oprf In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms, Erin K. Cassin
The Roles Of Oprf In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms, Erin K. Cassin
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Many bacteria form multicellular communities known as biofilms. Biofilms contain bacterial cells and a protective extracellular biofilm matrix. This matrix contains exopolysaccharides, extracellular DNA (eDNA), membrane vesicles, and proteins. The matrix proteins are far less characterized than other extracellular biofilm components. In biofilms formed by the model organism Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the protein OprF is abundant in the cellular outer membrane and the extracellular matrix. In my dissertation research, I have presented data supporting the hypothesis that the OprF protein significantly affects P. aeruginosa biofilms. By examining various strain backgrounds and the nutrient-dependent effects of glucose and sodium chloride, I demonstrate …

Advanced Literacies In The 21st Century: Examining A Narrative-Based Video Game As A Stealth Assessment For Comprehension, Joseph Paul Fiorentini
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In our technology-rich 21st Century, the need for valid, reliable, and fair literacy assessments remains pertinent to the field of education. This study defines literacy as advanced literacy where comprehension is considered a holistic product of applying acquired knowledge, skills, or abilities (KSA) to contextualized situations. Conventional assessment methods have traditionally parceled out the construct into its component parts (i.e., vocabulary, phonics, fluency, etc.) as a means of understanding the meaning making process from a traditional literacy perspective. Stealth assessments utilize the Evidence-Centered Design (ECD) framework as a robust method for assessing complex constructs holistically within technology rich environments. Adapting …
Dysregulation Of Vitamin D Receptor And Cyp450 Metabolism Enzymes May Explain Oral Cancer Responsiveness, Dustin Hunsaker
Dysregulation Of Vitamin D Receptor And Cyp450 Metabolism Enzymes May Explain Oral Cancer Responsiveness, Dustin Hunsaker
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Many health benefits are associated with Vitamin D (VitD), although deficiency is associated with poor health outcomes and increased risk for cancer development. For example, many tissue specific enzymes are involved in VitD metabolism, and mutations or deletions within Vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes are known to increase cancer risk by altering their functions or bioavailability, although less is known about these phenomena in oral cancers. Using well characterized, commercially available oral cell lines (OKF4, HGF-1, SCC4, SCC9, SCC15, SCC25, CAL27), mRNA expression of P450 cytochrome VitD metabolic enzymes and receptor genes by qPCR revealed differential results. One oral cancer …

Planting Seeds, Changing Minds: A Narrative Analysis Of Environmental Children’S Books, Julianna Jovillar
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Children’s books are some of the earliest forms of entertainment and education a person will interact with in their lifetime. Simultaneously weaving a tale and teaching a lesson, children’s books, therefore, have the great potential to communicate important lessons and mindsets at young ages. Utilizing narrative theory (Fisher, 1984) and ecocriticism (Glotfelty, 1996), while also considering environmental ideologies and narrative components (Bloomfield, 2024), this study explores the functions of environmental children’s books and how they might communicate environmental messaging and encourage ecological thinking. Following a narrative analysis of 46 environmental children’s books, the results of this study indicate that there …

Teacher Perceptions Of Their Role In Aspiration Development With Diverse Students With Disabilities, Joseph Edward Simmons Jr.
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Aspirations stem from a humanistic perspective, emphasizing the person as a whole. They serve as a foundational and predictive component of an individual’s life. Teachers play a critical role in shaping the successes and challenges their students encounter (Zolkoski, 2019). Aspirations, as a cognitive process grounded in forward-thinking, are essential to personal development and evolve through experiences (Hart, 2016). However, students with disabilities often lack opportunities to explore their aspirations within schools. These students are frequently constrained by both teachers and systemic practices within the school environment (Gilmour et al., 2019). Aspiration exploration is crucial because children and youth need …
