Military Spouse Employment Landscape: Trends, Barriers, And Opportunities, Rosalinda V. Maury, Jenna-Lyn R. Roman, Brice Stone, Jeanette Yih Harvie

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

Military spouses remain a uniquely positioned but persistently underleveraged segment of the U.S. labor force. Despite being well-educated, resilient, and highly mobile, their employment outcomes continue to lag behind civilian peers. This report draws primarily on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS), offering a comparative view of active-duty spouses alongside veteran and civilian spouses across industries, occupations, and geographies. To provide a more comprehensive perspective, these findings are considered alongside other national research efforts that offer deeper insights into the lived experiences, household dynamics, and employment challenges specific to military-connected families.

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The effect of the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) on the higher education sector is profound. The scholarly research on COVID-19 effects in higher education have largely focused on presenting intra-period facts, often with poor contextualisation to the broader evidence base. This manuscript draws on the first comprehensive systematic literature reviw database comprising 138 publications, the COVID-19 in Higher Education Database, to provide a first glance at six months of COVID-19 crisis leadership responses in the higher education sector. This systematic review aims to consolidate learning and teaching literature between 1 January 2020 and 30 June 2020 to share timely educational …

Image Encryption Based On Chaotic Blocks Shuffling And Rc4, Donia Fadil Chalob, Rusul Hussein Hasan, Farah Neamah Abbas

Baghdad Science Journal

The necessity for image encryption has grown significantly, especially the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) fast development and the ease with which images can be taken and transferred, including those related to travel, health care, the agricultural sector, the military and autos. Additionally, since every image has significant characteristics like size, high correlation, and massive redundant positions, encrypting it with a conventional key via IoT communication technology exposes it to numerous threats. Chaotic image cryptography is considered the most suitable method for image application due to its sensitivy to the initial conditions and control parameters. This research …

An Improved Deep Perceptual Hashing Algorithm-Based Information Retrieval System For Remote Cloud Computing, Othman Atta Ismael, Israa Fars Hassan

Baghdad Science Journal

The growth of information retrieval and associated services can be attributed to technical advancements. Meanwhile, traditional information retrieval methods are impacted by performance, accuracy, and scalability limitations. An information retrieval system for distant cloud computing that is based on an Improved Deep Perceptual Hashing Algorithm (IDP-HA) is one of the solutions that have been developed to solve these constraints. Systems are widely used due to their ability to recognize intricate patterns in data. The accuracy of information similarity measurement is still lacking due to the inherent complexity of data and measuring methods. The deep perceptual hashing approach uses Deep Neural …

"I'M Strictly T4t": Trans For Trans Connections In The Contemporary, Madi Lou Alexander May 2025

"I'M Strictly T4t": Trans For Trans Connections In The Contemporary, Madi Lou Alexander

Dissertations and Theses

Trans for trans relationships, referred to as "t4t", are a relationship type specific to trans individuals. Linguistically originating from Craigslist personal ad spaces, t4t indicates a trans person seeking out and engaging with another trans person. The scope of relationships under the t4t label are often largely associated with sexuality and dating scenes due to their conception in online cruising spaces. Through qualitative analysis, I assess the range of what t4t relationships are through 30 in-depth interviews with participants identifying as trans. This work moves away from focusing on the deficits of holding a marginalized identity, instead aiming to center …

Biofilms are an important colonization mechanism employed by several microbial species to better establish themselves and monopolize the acquisition of resources across different environs. Some bacteria have evolved specialized metabolites that, when secreted, disrupt the formation and stability of biofilms generated by competing heterospecies, providing the producing organism with an ecological advantage. Soil-derived species are probable candidates for the identification of such compounds, given the intense level of competition that occurs within the terrestrial ecosystem. The MS14 strain of Burkholderia contaminans isolated from soil in Mississippi has previously been shown to produce antimicrobial compounds like occidiofungin and ornibactin. In this …

The Canadian Press Views The 1908 American Presidential Election, Harvey Strum May 2025

The Canadian Press Views The 1908 American Presidential Election, Harvey Strum

Journal of 20th Century Media History

"How many people appreciate the tragedy of the defeat of Mr. Bryan," asked the anti-Bryan Toronto World on 5 November 1908. This expression of sympathy for the Great Commoner's defeat by Republican candidate William Howard Taft, represented the opinion of a minority of the Canadian press. Newspapers representing western agrarian progressives, trade unions, militant Protestant nativists, independent reformers, and social reform Liberals regretted Bryan's defeat since he symbolized reform that might creep across the 49th parallel. If Bryan's third defeat did not prompt the majority of Canadian editors to dance in the streets it did prompt them to raise their …

1960s Teen Fan Magazines And The Beatles: An Exploration Of Community, Fandom, And The Beatles Narrative, Allison Bumsted

Journal of 20th Century Media History

In the 1960s, before the days of the internet, there were few places a young person could read about popular music – as a limited number of print media outlets took popular music, especially rock, seriously. In order to read about popular music (beyond the reprinting of lyrics, industry news, or promotions), one would turn to newly developed teen-type and teen fan magazines like DIG or 16 Magazine, where pages were full of artists such as Elvis, Annette, Leslie Gore, Connie Francis, and Paul Anka. In 1964, the teen fan magazine reached a new height with the arrival of …

“To Prepare The Mind For Wonder”: Popular Science And Mass Media In The 1920s, Alexander Olson May 2025

“To Prepare The Mind For Wonder”: Popular Science And Mass Media In The 1920s, Alexander Olson

Journal of 20th Century Media History

This article examines the creation and development of the Science Service, a 1920s initiative aimed at popularizing science through mass media. Founded by biologist William Ritter and newspaper magnate Edward Scripps, the wire service sought to disseminate accurate scientific information to the American public via newspapers, radio, and other popular media. While Scripps favored a commercially viable, accessible style that used entertainment to hook readers, Ritter envisioned science journalism as a tool for democratic education and intellectual empowerment. These conflicting philosophies created lasting tensions within the organization around how to address challenges such as sensationalism, editorial independence, and public skepticism. …

These artworks were created as a direct result of my teaching the ANI216 Animation Studio. In the process of devising ways to incorporate photographic imagery into an animation, I developed a multi-plane system where I could create layers in Adobe Photoshop and combine them with original cartoon characters in After Effects and then animate them.

These artworks for an exhibition at the Garden Gallery (Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney) are imaginary stills inspired by the actual animation. All three were sold.

The integration of Silicon Carbide (SiC) nanoparticles into Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LB-PBF) Molybdenum (Mo) printing represents a significant advancement in refractory metal additive manufacturing. Our investigation examined how varying SiC nanoparticle sizes affect the microstructural and electrical properties of LB-PBF-printed molybdenum components while maintaining a 0.01 mass fraction of Mo. At an Linear Energy Densities (LED) of 1.8 J/mm, the addition of 80 nm SiC particles achieved a 46% reduction in porosity, while sheet resistance decreased by 6% at LED of 2.0 J/mm with 80 nm SiC particles. These performance improvements stem from several mechanisms: SiC particles serve as …

Asian American Pacific Islander Representation In Middle School Social Studies, Erin Dorothy Mccarthy May 2025

Asian American Pacific Islander Representation In Middle School Social Studies, Erin Dorothy Mccarthy

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

According to recent studies, Asian American history has been misrepresented or omitted from the overall narrative of American history in standards, textbooks, and curricula. The problem was that Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) perspectives were missing and underrepresented in the middle school social studies curriculum in Wisconsin. Framed by Ladson-Billings’ culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP), the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how middle school social studies teachers integrated the voices of AAPI identities into the curriculum. The research questions probed how middle school teachers met state statutes on including multicultural voices and how they included AAPI perspectives …
