Is A Dog A Female Offender’S Best Friend? Prison-Based Dog Program Implications, Lavinia Smith
Is A Dog A Female Offender’S Best Friend? Prison-Based Dog Program Implications, Lavinia Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The existing literature on female offender prison-based dog program (PBDP) experiences and their effect and influence on female offender reentry, rehabilitation, and transition into society following incarceration is limited at best. Despite mixed evidence on prison-based animal programs, human–animal interaction research suggests positive psychological effects. With a 56% chance of reoffending a year after release, understanding the effects of PBDPs may aid reentry/transition support that lowers recidivism rates. Grounded by Broidy and Agnew’s gendered general strain theory, through basic qualitative inquiry, this research study aimed to understand female offender PBDP participants' reentry and transition experiences. Twenty-seven semistructured interviews were conducted …

Schwartz Values Of Active-Duty U.S. Soldiers: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Refined Values, Kelcey Sihanourath
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The U.S. Army is currently facing recruitment challenges due to a decrease in the number of qualified youths. When recruitment is low, reducing attrition becomes even more critical to maintaining force readiness. Research indicates attrition patterns may be influenced by interactions between personal characteristics and the unique culture of each military branch. One characteristic is personal values; however, the most widely used personal values framework, Schwartz’s values theory, has not been validated for the U.S. Army population. This study aimed to address this gap by empirically assessing Schwartz’s values using a nonexperimental cross-sectional quantitative design, collecting data from 273 active-duty …

The burgeoning e-commerce sector offers a promising avenue for tax revenue. However, aligning its regulatory measures with continuous advancements presents challenges. The government has recently issued a regulation that separates commerce and social media functions within social commerce platforms. This study analyzes the determinants to consider in formulating a value-added tax (VAT) policy on economic activities conducted through social commerce platforms and the effective VAT collection strategy. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with in-depth interviews and a literature review as data collection techniques. The key finding highlights the importance of efficiently managing data for businesses operating in social commerce …

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi
This study aims to investigate the willingness to pay (WTP) for user charges imposed by the local government using an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Viewing the local government as a service provider, the construct of perceived value is incorporated to determine behavioral intention toward user charges, marking a novel contribution of this study to the literature. Specifically, this study analyzes (1) the effect of each TPB construct—attitude toward the behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control (PBC)—on WTP, (2) the effect of perceived value on WTP, and (3) the indirect effect of perceived value on WTP mediated by …

The climate crisis threatens our global communities, cultures, and futures. Communication that brings climate change into everyday conversations and galvanizes the public to respond to it collectively is needed. However, political divides in the United States make climate change a contested heritage topic that is challenging to address. The purpose of this applied, basic qualitative research study was to use the Four Truth Framework, developed by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to investigate climate change communication at Joshua Tree National Park in California and Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska. Climate change affects national parks more than other …

The Dialectical Transformation Of Javanese Mantras In The Aesthetic Construction Of Modern Indonesian Poetry By Sapardi Djoko Damono, Mulyono Mulyono, U'Um Qomariyah, Asep Purwo Yudi Utomo, Dyah Prabaningrum, Qurrota Ayu Neina
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Mantras are an ancient form of poetry believed to possess a powerful ability to cure diseases, protect oneself, ward off misfortune, and foster love. Beyond those practical interests, Javanese mantras also contain philosophical values regarding the relationship between humans and God, humans and humans, and humans and the universe. These mantras become especially intriguing when reimagined in the form of modern poetry, as seen in the work of Sapardi Djoko Damono. This study explores the forms of transformation that Javanese mantras undergo in the poems by focusing on the following questions: 1) What are the forms of transformation of Javanese …

Teaching Hygiene Skills To Teenagers With Developmental Disabilities Utilizing Friendship Circles, Nathaniel Medsker
Theses and Dissertations
High school students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often struggle with hygiene skills, including table manners. These difficulties are especially noticeable in peer tutoring settings. Peer tutors were utilized to increase the mouth wiping behavior of the students with IDD using peer influence through the friendship circles intervention. The participants included high school age students with IDD and accompanying peer tutors from their classroom. This was done in a social setting during lunch while the peer tutors modeled the appropriate mouth wiping behavior and complimented the students with IDD if they also participated in the mouth wiping behavior. The …

Besieging International Law? The Gaza Conflict And The Future Of Siege Warfare, Avraham Russell Shalev
San Diego International Law Journal
The legal boundaries of siege warfare are under renewed scrutiny following Israel’s siege of Gaza after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks. This analysis explores the intersection of military necessity and humanitarian obligations, assessing whether Israel’s tactics conform to established international law or signal a shift toward stricter legal interpretations. Key legal frameworks—including the Geneva Conventions, Hague Regulations, and customary international law—are examined alongside debates on civilian protection, humanitarian aid access, and the prohibition of starvation as a method of warfare. A comparative evaluation of sieges in Gaza and Syria reveals inconsistencies in how international humanitarian law is applied, raising …
Electricity Affordability In Context, Troy A. Rule
Electricity Affordability In Context, Troy A. Rule
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
Recent residential electricity price increases in California have caused some to suggest the state is experiencing an electricity affordability crisis. Although the typical household in California and across the country spends less than three percent of its income on electricity, California’s soaring electricity rates can impose substantial burdens on some of the state’s lowest-income households. Why have retail electricity prices rapidly risen in California over the past decade while remaining relatively stable in others? What are the potential downsides of overly fixating on electricity affordability concerns in the context of energy policymaking? And what principles should guide policymakers in California …

Beneath The Surface: Unearthing Legal, Cultural, And Environmental Challenges To Resource Extraction On Indigenous Land, Danara Greer
Beneath The Surface: Unearthing Legal, Cultural, And Environmental Challenges To Resource Extraction On Indigenous Land, Danara Greer
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
Much of the world’s natural capital lies on or beneath lands occupied by Indigenous peoples. Since the advent of colonialism, Indigenous communities have tirelessly safeguarded their land from encroachment by extractive industries. The contemporary consequences of resource extraction on Indigenous lands include environmental degradation and cultural heritage destruction. Rather than providing a legal pathway to self-determination, the United States Supreme Court has eroded tribal sovereignty and undermined the trust relationship between tribes and the federal government. American Indians and Alaska Natives are prohibited from tapping into their resource wealth by an intricate bureaucratic framework that dictates how resources may—and may …

Labor Rights Under The Usmca: Progress, Shortcomings, And The Road Ahead, Ruby Carlon
Labor Rights Under The Usmca: Progress, Shortcomings, And The Road Ahead, Ruby Carlon
San Diego International Law Journal
The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) introduced the Rapid Response Labor Mechanism (RRLM) to strengthen labor rights enforcement in North American trade. While the mechanism marks a significant departure from NAFTA’s weaker labor provisions, its implementation has revealed systemic shortcomings. The RRLM relies on voluntary compliance, lacks binding remediation requirements, and has an underutilized panel review process, limiting its effectiveness. Economic asymmetry between the United States and Mexico further complicates enforcement, as Mexico bears a disproportionate burden despite having fewer resources to uphold labor standards. Additionally, corporate accountability remains elusive, with companies facing no direct obligations to integrate USMCA labor commitments …
Breaking The Vial: Leveraging North American Regulatory Models And Market Practices To Reform Insulin Pricing In The United States, Chloe Mietzel
Breaking The Vial: Leveraging North American Regulatory Models And Market Practices To Reform Insulin Pricing In The United States, Chloe Mietzel
San Diego International Law Journal
The high cost of insulin in the United States is driven by restrictive patent protections, trade secret barriers, regulatory inefficiencies, and anticompetitive practices that limit biosimilar competition. While Canada and Mexico have adopted policies that facilitate market entry and government price negotiations, the United States remains constrained by a regulatory framework that prioritizes exclusivity over affordability. Incremental reforms—such as limiting patent extensions, expediting biosimilar approval, increasing pricing transparency, and strengthening antitrust enforcement —could significantly lower costs and expand access. Previous legislative efforts, including the Inflation Reduction Act, have taken steps toward reform, but broader regulatory restructuring is necessary to ensure …

Intracellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) is a cell surface glycoprotein that regulates cell-cell interactions, signaling, and immune processes. ICAM-1 expression has been shown to be elevated in many types of infections and inflammatory diseases. Strategies to block ICAM-1 function, including monoclonal anti-ICAM-1 antibodies, have been successful in treating the effects of chronic respiratory, autoimmune, and cardiovascular diseases. Naturally occurring autoantibodies targeting cytokines, endothelial cells, and other host receptors have been identified, and have been found to play a role in immunoregulation in health and disease. In this study, we determined the presence and levels of ICAM-1 autoantibodies across different age …

BACKGROUND: Strategies for deploying indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1)-targeted therapies for use against cancer have focused on IDO1's role in promoting peripheral immune tolerance that shields tumors from effector T cells. However, preclinical investigation of both primary and metastatic tumor development in the lungs has uncovered a previously unappreciated role for IDO1 in directing a counterregulatory response to interferon (IFN)-γ that realigns the local inflammatory environment to promote tumor neovascularization. Understanding how to therapeutically leverage the ability of IDO1 inhibitors to subvert inflammatory neovascularization within the tumor microenvironment has potential ramifications for future clinical development of these compounds.

The Rainbow War: Ballot Measure 9 And The Fight Over Gay Rights In Oregon, Patrick Douglas Lasalle
The Rainbow War: Ballot Measure 9 And The Fight Over Gay Rights In Oregon, Patrick Douglas Lasalle
Dissertations and Theses
On November 3, 1992, Oregonians were asked to vote on Ballot Measure 9, an amendment to Oregon's constitution that would prohibit anti-discrimination protections for homosexuals, prohibit the use of public funds and facilities to "promote" homosexuality, and require schools to actively discourage homosexuality as "abnormal, wrong, unnatural, and perverse." In this narrative history, I will explore Measure 9 and the ways in which it divided the state, beginning with its introduction in May 1991. I examine the history and reasoning of the Oregon Citizens Alliance, the Christian Right organization behind the measure, as well as the gay and lesbian community’s …

Combating Cdn Leeching With Ai-Powered Anomaly Detection, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
The technology described in this paper relates to AI-powered anomaly detection for identifying and mitigating content delivery network (CDN) leeching activities in real-time, with particular focus on live stream protection. A multi-stage detection approach, leveraging regression followed by anomaly detection, addresses unauthorized content access and redistribution. This is achieved by ingesting real-time data from various sources—including but not limited to CDN logs, digital rights management (DRM) system telemetry, and application-level interaction data—which is then transformed into analytical features to establish baseline behavioral patterns before applying anomaly detection. Utilizing machine learning models, trained to understand user, device, and session-level behaviors, the …

New Perspectives On Media And Culture
New Perspectives On Media And Culture
Communication Research Trends
Media studies were born in the 1930s and 1940s with the popular assumption that film and broadcasting have enormous power to sway voters, shape the minds of children and direct public opinion. By the late 1950s, however, the cumulative research showed that the media, in themselves, are rarely the sole cause of aggressive behaviour, conversions or other personal changes. Media are definitely somehow influential, but media effects are a complex process mingled with the influence of family, friend groups, and the broader socio-cultural environment.
In the search for more nuanced explanations of media influence during the 1960s and 1970s, researchers …

The Crisis In Public Service Broadcasting
Communication Research Trends
Main issue abstract:
In early 1987 the Director-General of the BBC, Alasdair Milne, was forced to resign; his successor was Michael Checkland, who had been in charge of the Corporation's financial strategy. Milne had begun his career as a programme maker, Checkland as an accountant. Thus, symbolically, a cultural institution dedicated to serving the public by providing information, education and entertainment, acknowledged the supremacy of economics.
Across the globe public broadcasting is being forced to come to terms with demands that it be more entrepreneurial in spirit and give better 'value for money'. It is accused of giving its audience …
