"Change Is All There Is": Exploring Journalistic Coverage Of Gentrification In The St. Johns Neighborhood Of Portland, Or, Eva Kovolitsky
University Honors Theses
Gentrification, as an increasingly significant characteristic of contemporary urban spaces, has been the subject of a vast body of literature. This has prompted further research into how gentrification is described and the implications of language used in both academic research and popular media accounts. This study explores discourse used in journalistic coverage of gentrification in the St. Johns neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. Guided by past work in discourse analysis and critical urban geography, this study attempts to understand how academic discourse on gentrification is both reflected in and divergent from neighborhood-level discourse. This study used data from the St. Johns …

Climate, Water, and the Environment Research
Wildfire season has grown in length and severity in the western United States due to decades of fire suppression and climate change. This trend is projected to continue, worsening air quality and increasing the risk to public health. In response, the Gonzaga Institute for Climate, Water, and the Environment, in partnership with the University of Washington, hosted the Smoke Ready Spokane Symposium in July 2024 in Spokane, Washington. The event convened community partners across sectors to reflect on past wildfire smoke events and discuss locally-relevant wildfire smoke exposure reduction strategies. Symposium participants engaged in small group discussions using the World …

Narratives Of Jewish American Public School Educators Amid Rising Antisemitism Post October 7, 2023, Cassandra Schwartz
Narratives Of Jewish American Public School Educators Amid Rising Antisemitism Post October 7, 2023, Cassandra Schwartz
Dissertations
This study investigated how Jewish American public school educators are responding to rising antisemitism post-October 7, 2023. While research exists on global antisemitism, the experiences of Jewish educators within the unique context of American public schools represent a significant and under-explored gap in academic literature. A qualitative narrative research approach, grounded in critical theory, was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight Jewish American public school educators and analyzed thematically. The findings revealed participants’ experiences of a heightened sense of fear and silence from colleagues and institutions, leading to feelings of isolation and being unsupported. Critically, this study …

Experimental And Computational Study Of Slow Crack Growth Of High Density Polyethylene, Abdulla Fawzi Almomani
Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the slow crack growth (SCG) behavior of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) under various mechanical and environmental conditions. The study combines experimental analysis and computational modeling to enhance the understanding of SCG mechanisms in HDPE, particularly in pressurized pipes and under the exposure to hydrocarbons. A novel Crack Layer (CL) theory-based SCG model is developed and validated through experimental data, offering a predictive framework for HDPE failure assessment. The main objective of this dissertation is to quantify and model the viscoelastic-viscoplastic behavior of HDPE under monotonic and cyclic loading conditions while addressing SCG kinetics in structural applications. The study …

Examining The Legal Responsibilities And Key Challenges Of Personal Representatives In Malaysian Inheritance Management, Muhammad Amrullah Drs Nasrul, Anis A'Fifah Zairin Zain, Wan Noraini Wan Mohd Salim
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
Personal representative connotes a person authorised under the law to manage the estate of the deceased person. The personal representative is responsible to gather all the assets belonging to the deceased and distribute the assets to the beneficiaries legally. The process of inheritance management in Malaysia requires a formal application to be made to the administrative bodies for the appointment of a personal representative, either as an executor or administrator. However, instances of misappropriation of the deceased’s estate by personal representatives have raised serious concerns, affecting the proper administration of estates and the rights of beneficiaries This study emphasises on …

Navigating Crisis: An Intersectional Analysis Of Marginalized Women’S Role In Sustaining Community Cooperatives Through The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rizky Septiana Widyaningtyas
The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies
This study analyzes the challenges faced by PEKKA women in Bantul regarding economic empowerment amid the Indonesian government's social restriction policies. It also explores the strategies these women have implemented to survive and strengthen community cooperatives during and after the pandemic. Using a socio-legal method with an intersectional approach, the results indicate that the pandemic and social distancing measures have significantly impacted the economies of female-headed households compared to those supported by both husbands and wives. This impact is particularly pronounced for women who run small businesses that had to close during the pandemic. PEKKA women work collectively in community …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Based on ten semi-structured interviews with autistic Twitch streamers, we introduce a series of scenario-based design narratives coupled with technology design concepts as a starting point for co-design discussion about autistic streaming. This work builds on prior thematic analysis of the unique intersection between autism and livestreaming. Our user-centered scenarios highlight the needs, goals, and challenges of autistic individuals in livestreaming contexts. By using evocative narratives, the scenarios serve to facilitate empathy and deeper engagement with the needs of autistic users, and help facilitate and support co-creative dialogues and discussions about new technology designs. We contribute this starting point for …

Hvi: A New Color Space For Low-Light Image Enhancement, Qingsen Yan, Yixu Feng, Cheng Zhang, Guansong Pang, Kangbiao Shi, Peng Wu, Wei Dong, Jinqiu Sun, Yanning Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Low-Light Image Enhancement (LLIE) is a crucial computer vision task that aims to restore detailed visual information from corrupted low-light images. Many existing LLIE methods are based on standard RGB (sRGB) space, which often produce color bias and brightness artifacts due to inherent high color sensitivity in sRGB. While converting the images using Hue, Saturation and Value (HSV) color space helps resolve the brightness issue, it introduces significant red and black noise artifacts. To address this issue, we propose a new color space for LLIE, namely Horizontal/Vertical-Intensity (HVI), defined by polarized HS maps and learnable inten sity. The former enforces …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Identifying logical fallacies is essential for maintaining log-ical reasoning and reducing false information in a variety of domains, such as the media, law, and education. We present an extensive study on the use of large language models (LLMs) for logical fallacy detection and provide a comparative overview of model performance across various fallacy classes. We evaluate the logical fallacy detection capabilities of multiple state-of-the-art models (LLaMA, Qwen, Gemma, Phi) utilizing accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score as assessment measures. Accord-ing to our findings, our models do well on simple fallacies like “circular reasoning,” but they have trouble with more interpretive reasoning …
