Videoshot: Automatic Video Summarization And Information Extraction, Paula Marques

Defensive Publications Series

While videos are a popular source of information, it is difficult to extract usable information from a video, e.g., a list of ingredients and set of steps from a recipe video. While screenshots and manual notetaking can be performed, these are cumbersome. This disclosure describes the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for automatic extraction of information from video content (performed in accordance with controls set by the video creator) and transfer of such information to an appropriate downstream application. A user can trigger information extraction by performing a suitable action and optionally, can indicate their task. Artificial intelligence techniques …

Comparison Of Elementary Dual Language Immersion Programs And Non-Dual Language Immersion Classes Before And After Attrition, Nathaniel Blain Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Using a longitudinal, multi-cohort design, this study examines the academic and linguistic effects of student attrition from Spanish-English dual language immersion (DLI) programs, particularly among multilingual learners (MLs). Drawing on 10 years of assessment data from two schools, the study addresses four research questions through multinomial logistic regression and hierarchical linear modeling to evaluate predictors of attrition, reading growth trajectories, and English language proficiency across student subgroups. Results indicated that attrition was most common in the early grades and was modestly associated with disability rates. At the same time, assessment scores were not predictive of program exit. Growth modeling revealed …

An Examination Of How Technological Universities Develop Cultural Capital Through Active Learning, Emma Carroll Dr, Orla Watson, Aisling M. Burke

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

Drawing on Bourdieu’s (1986) framework of embodied, objectified and institutionalised capital, this paper explores how technological universities (TUs) support the development of students’ cultural capital through active learning approaches. The formation of technological universities in Ireland marked a notable shift in the higher education landscape, with an emphasis on these institutions meeting the regional and economic needs of the location in which they operate. Currently, there is a dearth of studies pertaining to cultural capital and TUs. Consequently, there is an impetus for a conceptual study to help guide researchers towards understanding how active learning practices within Ireland’s TUs can …

The Critical Plastocapillary Number For A Newtonian Liquid Filament Embedded Into A Viscoplastic Fluid, Mohammad Tanver Hossain, Wonsik Eom, Arjun Shah, Andrew Lowe, Douglas Fudge, Sameh H. Tawfick, Randy Ewoldt

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The yield stress of a viscoplastic material can stabilize an embedded fluid tunnel against capillarity-induced breakup, enabling remarkable technologies such as embedded 3D printing of intricate, freeform, and small components. However, there is persistent disagreement in the published literature between the observed minimum stable diameter, 𝑑min, and the theoretical plastocapillary length 𝑝𝑐 = 2𝛤∕𝜎𝑦, with interfacial tension 𝛤 and bath yield stress 𝜎𝑦, leading to a prior hypothesis that the apparent surface tension 𝛤 is much smaller to enforce 𝑑min = 𝑝𝑐 . Here we introduce and experimentally test a new hypothesis that the critical diameter is set by the …

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications

Fungi secrete effector proteins, including extracellular redox enzymes, to inhibit host immunity. Redox enzymes have been hypothesized to inhibit host reactive oxygen species (ROS); however, how they suppress host immunity remains unknown. We characterized an extracellular ascorbate peroxidase (MoApx1) that is secreted into rice chloroplasts by the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae. MoApx1 displays multifunctional capabilities that significantly contribute to fungal virulence. Firstly, MoApx1 neutralizes host-derived H2O2 within the chloroplast through its peroxidase activity, thereby inhibiting chloroplast ROS (cROS)-mediated defense responses. Secondly, MoApx1 targets the photosystem I subunit OsPsaD, disrupting photosynthetic electron transport to further suppress cROS production. Most importantly, …

Radiant Love And Knowledge: Near-Death Experiences In Modern America, Carsen Grave Jun 2025

Radiant Love And Knowledge: Near-Death Experiences In Modern America, Carsen Grave

Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase

Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) are vivid, often transformative recollections of the dying process. Up to 23 percent of surviving critical patients and as many as 88 percent of lucid individuals on their deathbeds report such experiences. Most of these narratives describe an encounter with a radiant “Being of Light,” a godlike figure associated with profound and lasting improvements in well-being and spiritual outlook. Philosopher Raymond Moody introduced a systematic framework for NDEs in his 1975 book Life After Life, where he first labeled and popularized this figure. Since then, scholars have debated whether Moody’s framework described actual experiences or shaped …

Cosmic Force: A Framework For Applying The Prohibition Of The Use Of Force In Outer Space, Erin Pobjie

International Law Studies

Outer space is becoming increasingly contested and existing approaches to identifying prohibited force in outer space lack a systematic foundation, hindering their application to novel challenges such as temporary interference with critical satellites or threats involving commercial space actors. This article addresses this gap by developing the first comprehensive, multifactorial legal framework for identifying a prohibited use of force in outer space. This framework provides a structured method for analyzing non-kinetic actions, temporary effects, and persistent hazards like space debris. It fundamentally advances existing legal approaches in three ways. First, it establishes when States can be implicated in a violation …

The Ancillaries Of Undergraduate Economics Programs: Results Of A Departmental Survey, Gail M. Hoyt, Roisin O'Sullivan

Economics: Faculty Publications

Most economics departments have a cadre of ancillary elements intended to enhance the experience of their undergraduate majors. These may include opportunities to attend speaker series, give conference presentations, participate in student organizations, or work as teaching or research assistants. While economists have studied individual ancillaries, there is merit in a comprehensive examination. The authors design and conduct a departmental survey of 300 U.S. institutions to characterize ancillaries’ prevalence, structure, and perceived benefits. Their findings shed light on how the prevalence and structure of ancillaries vary across different types of academic institutions. Perceived benefits involve meeting departmental learning goals and …
