Fighting For Their Livelihood: Ufc Fighters Can Improve Conditions Without A Union, Evan Mattel

Florida Entertainment and Sports Law Review

This Article explores the compensation structure and current benefits afforded to UFC fighters, emphasizing the unique challenges and disparities faced in the absence of a collective bargaining agreement. Despite the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC’s) popularity and revenue, fighter pay still remains a contentious issue as many of the bonuses received by fighters are based on their experience, popularity, and fight performance. This leaves little room for consistent earnings and easy mobility within the organization’s rankings. This Article analyzes the current pay model and investigates the potential impacts of attempting to unionize fighters. By evaluating the current landscape of the UFC …

Research Over Regulation: What Must Be Done To Mandate Warning Labels On Social Media, John L. Markel

Journal of Technology Law & Policy

Recently, outcry for social media regulation has risen after leaks, whistleblowers, and new research suggest that youth social media use has negative impacts on mental health. These claimed negative impacts can range from a variety of symptoms and diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, body image issues, envy, sleep loss, addiction, and even ADHD. Of course, technology companies adamantly deny such accusations and instead point to the benefits social media has for the youth and our society overall. Additionally, they make clear that this research is far from conclusive. This situation is simply a modernization of the previous situation …

When Deepfakes Make Celebrities A Dime A Dozen Can The Right Of Publicity Save Their Worth?, Danielle A. Arnwine

Journal of Technology Law & Policy

Recent advancements in deepfake technology exemplify Oscar Wilde’s counter to the traditional view of the relationship between reality and art in a way never before seen. The proliferation and sophistication of artificial intelligence and digital art create previously inconceivable opportunities for celebrity revenue streams and foster a fundamental shift in how society interacts with media online and the importance of truth. Such achievements, while impressive when considered on their own merits, illuminate known deficiencies in legal frameworks. With the potential for unique catastrophic consequences for individual victims and national security, deepfake technology cannot evolve uncontrolled within a black box as …

The Current 'Ban-Demic': School Book Bans In The U.S., Barbara Perez, Jane Caputi Jun 2025

The Current 'Ban-Demic': School Book Bans In The U.S., Barbara Perez, Jane Caputi

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This essay examines the alarming rise of U.S book. Our stance is grounded in our experiences as educators and academics in Florida, the state with the highest number of book bans and legislation that has significantly impacted education. Book bans infringe on freedom of expression, right to access information, = students’ right to education, and real harm to targeted communities (i.e., LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities), as the bans contribute to the ongoing marginalization and stigmatization of these communities. Diverse representation is key in literature and education. Banning popular culture texts from the classroom stifles critical thinking, social dialogue, and, ultimately, …

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Malaria, toxoplasmosis, and cryptosporidiosis are caused by apicomplexan parasites Plasmodium spp., Toxoplasma gondii, and Cryptosporidium parvum, respectively, and pose major health challenges. Their therapies are inadequate, ineffective or threatened by drug resistance. The development of novel drugs against them requires innovative and resource-efficient strategies. We exploited the kinome conservation of these parasites to determine the cellular targets and effects of two Plasmodium falciparum inhibitors in T. gondii and C. parvum. The imidazoles, (R)-RY-1-165 and (R)-RY-1-185, were developed to target the cGMP dependent protein kinase of P. falciparum (PfPKG), orthologs of which are present in T. gondii and C. parvum. Using …

Who Gets To Be A Child And When? The Pervasive Yet Contextually Shaped Nature Of Racialized Adultification Across Perceivers And Contexts, Kevin M. Summers Jun 2025

Who Gets To Be A Child And When? The Pervasive Yet Contextually Shaped Nature Of Racialized Adultification Across Perceivers And Contexts, Kevin M. Summers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Racialized adultification is a pervasive bias in which individuals tend to judge Black children as older and more adult-like than White children of the same age. This racial bias is discussed across many scientific domains in addition to popular media, yet there is relatively little empirical work documenting its existence, consequences, and boundary conditions. In the current work, I aim to develop an empirical foundation that advances scientific understanding of racialized adultification and in turn contributes to a growing model that elucidates the conditions under which individuals are disproportionately likely to express this pernicious bias. In the current work, I …

Photochemistry Of Quinones And Combustion-Derived Particles, Desiree J. Sarmiento Jun 2025

Photochemistry Of Quinones And Combustion-Derived Particles, Desiree J. Sarmiento

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quinones are ubiquitous species that can be produced from the photochemical aging of combustion-derived particles (CDPs). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a major component of CDPs and are precursors to quinones and other oxidized products (OPAHs). My work first expanded on the PAH and OPAH photochemistry research of Dr. John Haynes, who showed that anthracene (ANT) oxidizes into 1,4-naphthoquinone (1,4-NAPQ), 1,4-anthraquinone (1,4-ANTQ), and 9,10-anthraquinone (9,10-ANTQ), and of Dr. Heather Runberg, who demonstrated the ability of ANT and these quinones to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Then at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), I was given the opportunity to investigate …

Intersectional Resistance: German Working-Class Adaptation To Nazi Control, Nyhan O’Sullivan Jun 2025

Intersectional Resistance: German Working-Class Adaptation To Nazi Control, Nyhan O’Sullivan

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Prior to the Nazi seizure of power, the working class in Germany held political power at the local and national level. Once the Nazi state obtained control, they took decisive action and dismantle workers institutions and control the working class. The working class was forced to adapt to these rapidly changing circumstances and push back against the Nazi state in ways dictated largely by the conditions in which workers found themselves. Workers with vastly different experiences, from forced laborers to enthusiastic fascist volunteers experiences the Nazi states contempt for workers and resisted. By examining this resistance and the effects it …

Synthesis Of Anti-Schistosomal Heterocyclic Compounds Targeting Thioredoxin Glutathione Reductase, Alexander Stewart Jun 2025

Synthesis Of Anti-Schistosomal Heterocyclic Compounds Targeting Thioredoxin Glutathione Reductase, Alexander Stewart

Lawrence University Honors Projects

chistosomiasis is a deadly and debilitating parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma mansoni which affects 200+ million people annually who come into contact with contaminated water. Currently only one drug (Praziquantel) has been used to treat this disease for almost 50 years, and fear of resistance is growing, thus a new drug and new target is needed. Inhibition of the organism-specific redox defense protein Thioredoxin Glutathione Reductase (TGR) has lead to the death of the worm in vitro, indicating that it would be a good druggable target. Fragment based analysis and x-ray crystallography have returned the outline of a lead compound …

Evolutionary Conservation Of Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein In Clarthrin-Mediated Endocytosis, Jonah Friedmann Jun 2025

Evolutionary Conservation Of Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein In Clarthrin-Mediated Endocytosis, Jonah Friedmann

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) is a cellular process for internalizing extracellular materials and recycling parts of the plasma membrane into intracellular vesicles. When a threshold of membrane-bound receptors is met at the cell surface, endocytic proteins organize into a conformation that can invaginate the membrane and separate a vesicle into the cytosol. Our current model for understanding CME has been derived from studies in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Previous research has led to a model for how Las17, a homolog of Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome Protein (WASP), contributes to CME. WASP proteins are critical actin nucleators involved in multiple processes. In S. cerevisiae, Las17 …

Neural Oscillations Enable Concurrent Visual Perception And Visual Working Memory Processing, Khayla Santiago Jun 2025

Neural Oscillations Enable Concurrent Visual Perception And Visual Working Memory Processing, Khayla Santiago

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Successful goal-directed behavior requires balancing task-relevant information stored in working memory and the continuous processing of incoming sensory input, yet the neural mechanisms underlying this coordination remain unclear. This study examines how neural oscillations support concurrent visual perception and visual working memory. Using electroencephalography (EEG), we recorded brain activity while participants performed a dual task paradigm requiring them to simultaneously maintain one orientation in their memory while monitoring another orientation on the screen. After variable time intervals (50 different SOAs between 500-1500ms), participants compared a probe against either the memorized or visually monitored orientation. Analysis of response times and accuracy …

Harlem’S Avenues For Agency: An Exploration Of Black Female Agency In Angelina Weld Grimké And Zora Neale Hurston’S Short Stories, Jessica Ellen Hartenbower

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores themes of Black female agency in selected short stories by Angelina Weld Grimké and Zora Neale Hurston. Pushing back against the belief that the Harlem Renaissaince was a movement solely for male artists, Grimké and Hurston write short stories that center Black women and their experiences. Through the avenues of bodily autonomy, the using or silencing of voice, the opportunity and ability to make choices, issues of justice, retribution, and vengeance, the holding of authority, and being empowered or disempowered, I examine the female characters’ exercising of their agency to varying degrees. I also discuss how religious …
