Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Early childhood caries (ECC) is the most common chronic health condition among Australian preschool-aged children. Untreated, ECC can affect children's physical and emotional health and future social opportunities. ECC is largely preventable through primary caregivers' correct understanding of oral health promoting diets, oral hygiene practices and dental service engagement. The study aim is to explore Western Australian (WA) primary caregivers' child oral health knowledge, experience and practices. The Fisher-Owens socioecological model of child oral health was applied across the study to structure and interpret the findings across the complex, interactive sociocultural influences on child oral health. Methods: The mixed-methods …

Descending Asymmetry In Proximate, Mobile And Digital Care: Chinese Older People Grandparenting Across Distance Within China And Overseas, Catriona Stevens, Rachel Murphy, Yu Huang, Loretta Baldassar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This article juxtaposes cases of grandparents who provide care for their grandchildren in two broad types of migrant families: (1) families where some members have migrated from the Chinese countryside to larger cities and (2) families where some members have migrated from China to Australia. By examining the proximate, mobile and digital forms of their grandparenting care labour, this article demonstrates the surprising durability and stability of care repertoires across distance and class. Despite the great differences of their migration geographies and family resources, these families nonetheless all demonstrate remarkably similar repertoires of caregiving articulated with reference to similar cultural …

Psychological Distress Among Suicide Exposed And Subsequently Bereaved Carers, Myfanwy Maple, Navjot Bhullar, Marie Reid, Sarah Wayland
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
People bereaved by suicide are at risk of developing significant mental health issues, including the risk of self-harm. To understand suicide exposure and psychological factors contributing to these adverse outcomes, survey data from 92 participants (Meanage = 53.50 years, SD = 14.5, female = 83.7%) who had provided care to someone who subsequently died by suicide were used. Participants responded to questions relating to suicide exposure, bereavement, suicidal ideation and psychological distress. A hierarchical regression analysis found that the perceived impact of suicide death and one's own suicidal ideation explained 46% variance in psychological distress. Suicide bereaved carers are highly …

Post-Anthropocene Provocations: Human-Sized Scholars’ Rocks, Cronenbergian Flesh Caves And Zen Garden Design Cues For A Future Proof Re(Image)Ining, Brenton Rossow, Darren Tynan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This research explores concertinaing past, present and future interventional creative and pedagogical practices to address the challenges of the Post-Anthropocene era. We argue that the Post-Anthropocene is marked by biotechnological entanglements, environmental violence and digital overstimulation. The discussions herein critique a hyperattentive achievement society characterised by a scattering of attention, a near-constant screen-mediated stream of digital material and tasks and the commodification of leisure time. Enlisting Byung-Chul Han’s concept of hyperattention and themes and motifs from David Cronenberg’s films, the authors propose “FUTURE PROOF re(image)ining” as a collaborative Cli-Fi narrative concept. The project reimagines objects from an initial art installation …

The research included in this compendium centers Indigenous, diaspora, migrant, disenfranchised and disaffected groups in the discussions about violence and power. Through these perspectives the reader experiences the unflinching interrogations of the forces that seek to control, enforce, regulate and profit from the oppression, subjugation and criminalization of others highlight the harm of unchecked power. The research undertaken by the VIP Lab Fellows highlights how the experiences of those in the sightline of unmitigated power may otherwise be trivialized and obscured if attention and analysis is not devoted to understanding them. Their research also suggests contextually appropriate responses to remedy …

Digital Bibliography In The Age Of Linked Data, Kate Ozment
Digital Bibliography In The Age Of Linked Data, Kate Ozment
Faculty Scholarship
The article explores how the interplay of ideological values and technological capacities have shaped the digital bibliography of British print history. Using a misgendering in the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) as a case study, the article explores how information flows through resources like Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO), and Early English Books Online (EEBO), library catalogues, WorldCat, and retail outlets like Amazon. The article argues that as data from the ESTC is reproduced through linked data structures, information is ‘authorized’ far beyond what a single resource would do alone or what its original authors imagined or designed. While feminist, …

A New City For A New Era: Xiong'an As Showcase Of China's Evolving Urban Ideology, Andrew Stokols
A New City For A New Era: Xiong'an As Showcase Of China's Evolving Urban Ideology, Andrew Stokols
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Cities have long been expressions of political ideology in China and elsewhere. During China’s rapid urbanization over the past few decades, “new areas” became popular strategies to promote urban growth, following the success of Shenzhen, widely regarded as China’s first special economic zone. Today under Xi, Xiong’an New Area has become the latest “new area of national significance.” But unlike previous new areas in China, Xiong’an has become wedded to a distinct vision of the urban in Xi Jinping’s China, one in which the excesses of reform-era urbanization are controlled through new forms of affordable housing and finance, new ecological …
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Application For Port Drayage Truck: Integrated Transportation And Energy Modeling, Shams Tanvir, Emu Ghosh
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Application For Port Drayage Truck: Integrated Transportation And Energy Modeling, Shams Tanvir, Emu Ghosh
Mineta Transportation Institute
This report investigates the viability of hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) for port drayage applications, focusing on both energy modeling and economic feasibility. Port drayage—trucking operations that move goods a short distance to and from ports—is a key part of freight logistics and the critical movement of goods in American communities. This project developed a microscopic energy consumption model using second-by-second activity data from 38 Class 8 diesel drayage trucks operating in Southern California. The model emulated FCEV operations and determined an average hydrogen fuel consumption of 0.15 kg/mile across 749 trips. This data informed a levelized cost of …

Cracking Aegis: An Adversarial Llm-Based Game For Raising Awareness Of Vulnerabilities In Privacy Protection, Jiaying Fu, Yiyang Lu, Zehua Yang, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Ray Lc
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Traditional methods for raising awareness of privacy protection often fail to engage users or provide hands-on insights into how privacy vulnerabilities are exploited. To address this, we incorporate an adversarial mechanic in the design of the dialogue-based serious game Cracking Aegis. Leveraging LLMs to simulate natural interactions, the game challenges players to impersonate characters and extract sensitive information from an AI agent, Aegis. A user study (n=22) revealed that players employed diverse deceptive linguistic strategies, including storytelling and emotional rapport, to manipulate Aegis. After playing, players reported connecting in-game scenarios with real-world privacy vulnerabilities, such as phishing and impersonation, and …
Wild Hogs In The Water: Contested Infrastructural Ecologies Of Reservoir Storage In Texas, Sayd Randle
Wild Hogs In The Water: Contested Infrastructural Ecologies Of Reservoir Storage In Texas, Sayd Randle
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Reservoirs are developed to store water in reserve for future use. But once built, reservoir sites inevitably hold more than just water, often serving as a key habitat for a range of species. This paper examines how one such animal has transformed water storage facilities and nearby landscapes into contested ground in urbanising areas of Texas, USA. Living around the reservoirs, feral hogs complicate the process of urbanisation by degrading the stockpiled water and infrastructure at the storage sites themselves and by damaging private property throughout the surrounding landscape. Tracking local efforts to manage the hogs, the case study illustrates …
Political Ecologies Of Storage For The 21st Century, Sayd Randle, Matthew Archer
Political Ecologies Of Storage For The 21st Century, Sayd Randle, Matthew Archer
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
New resource storage arrangements are proliferating rapidly both in terms of physical infrastructures-for the storage of things like "clean" energy, nuclear waste, carbon dioxide, fresh water, and data-and as part of a set of discursive moves that reinforce a vision of a near future world in which problems of climate change mitigation and adaptation in particular (but also issues like energy security, water security, industry growth, etc.) are solved through eco-modernist techno-fixes. This Symposium sketches the contours of a framework we term political ecologies of storage. In doing so, we treat storage as both a potent imaginary and a concrete …
Calibrated Structures Of Feeling: Cultural Citizenship And The Reproduction Of The Military In Singapore, John Lowe, George Wong
Calibrated Structures Of Feeling: Cultural Citizenship And The Reproduction Of The Military In Singapore, John Lowe, George Wong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article discusses the nexus between Raymond Williams’ structure of feelings and the reproduction of military masculinity as cultural citizenship. By placing the gaze upon National Service in the Singapore Armed Forces as a rite of passage into manhood, this work uses representations of the military in popular culture and souvenirs/ephemera to elucidate how structures of feeling are calibrated as masculinity the state wants its citizenry to internalize. These render military masculinity emergent for Singaporean male bodies. With the male body functioning as an important edifice of the military, emotions toward military service are the connective tissue between enactments of …
Governing Migration, Producing Skills: Emigration And Education In The Philippines, Yasmin Y. Ortiga, Roderick. Galam
Governing Migration, Producing Skills: Emigration And Education In The Philippines, Yasmin Y. Ortiga, Roderick. Galam
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article examines skill as an integral yet understudied aspect of emigration governance. To date, migration studies have mainly focused on how the demand for migrant skills drive people's movements across borders, shaping the conditions for entry into popular destinations in the West. In contrast, less is known as to how skills also shape the way governments manage emigration, pushing would-be migrants to acquire certain capacities well before they leave their countries of origin. Drawing from the case of the Philippines, this article discusses how state agencies have used skills training to dominate specific markets for migrant professionals and demand …

Stockpiling, Forecasting And Protecting Skills: Skilling As Technique Of Preparedness In Times Of Crises, Rebecca Ye, Yasmin Y. Ortiga
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this comparative and situational analysis, we examine how nation-states use skilling as a technique of preparedness during crisis moments. By analysing two strategically selected country cases, Singapore and Sweden, during a critical phase of a global pandemic, we identify three techniques: stockpiling, forecasting, and protecting skills, and how these were enacted as a means to perform preparedness. Stockpiling skills was observed to take place as a rapid response; forecasting skills was a technique enacted with a view on the longer-term horizon and protecting skills was mobilised as a short-term future technique, where boundaries were assembled around skilling. While there …
No One Acts Alone-Unravelling The Compositional Influences Of Organic Compounds In Offshore Produced Water On Zebrafish Embryotoxicity, Lisbet Sørensen, Paul Mccormack, Paul Sutton, Julia Farkas, Sonnich Meier, Steven J. Rowland, Trond Nordtug, Bjørn Henrik Hansen
No One Acts Alone-Unravelling The Compositional Influences Of Organic Compounds In Offshore Produced Water On Zebrafish Embryotoxicity, Lisbet Sørensen, Paul Mccormack, Paul Sutton, Julia Farkas, Sonnich Meier, Steven J. Rowland, Trond Nordtug, Bjørn Henrik Hansen
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Offshore produced water (PW) is one of the largest and most chemically complex effluents of waste directly and intentionally discharged into the marine environment. Although it is well known that PW can be severely toxic to marine organisms, the mechanisms of toxicity remain poorly understood, contributed by the lack of comprehensive chemical characterization of the PW. In this study, we applied elements of effects-directed analysis with the aim to identify organic chemical drivers of toxicity in PW towards fish early life stages. A solvent extract of a PW was fractioned based on compound functionality and chemically characterized by a concert …

Cardiovascular Manifestations Of Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum., Aimee Willett, Vivek V Jasti, Sean M Muir, Jay Anderson
Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare systemic disorder of elastic fibers. The most common manifestations include characteristic papules and ocular angioid streaks. Cardiovascular complications include peripheral arterial disease, hypertension, premature coronary artery disease, and cerebrovascular disease. These associations are secondary to dystrophic elastic fibers, resulting in the calcification of small- to medium-sized arteries. We present the case of a 22-year-old otherwise healthy female patient diagnosed with PXE following a biopsy of a neck lesion. Ophthalmologic evaluation revealed characteristic angioid streaks. The patient also reported early satiety and leg cramping, which prompted referral to gastroenterology and cardiology. Further investigation raised concern …
The Experience Of Codependency In Young Adult Romantic Relationships, Amanda S. Soares
The Experience Of Codependency In Young Adult Romantic Relationships, Amanda S. Soares
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This qualitative study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore the lived experiences of codependency among four young adults (ages 21–24) who had recently exited a codependent romantic relationship. Through in-depth interviews, themes around emotional enmeshment, identity loss, boundary erosion, emotional suppression, and healing were found. Findings indicate that early attachment patterns, trauma, and socialization intersect with emotional vulnerability and self-worth to create conditions ripe for codependent dynamics. Participants describe both the psychological toll of these relationships and the personal growth that followed. These insights contribute to the limited literature on young adult codependency and may inform prevention and intervention …
Manufactured Superiority: The War On Terror, United States Dominated Media, And The Global Implications Of American Exceptionalism, Ayan Mohamed
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This research examines American exceptionalism and its effects on the global perception of the United States, specifically how it shapes international narratives, marginalizes alternative perspectives, and reinforces a ruling American worldview that inhibits effective engagement and cross-cultural dialogue. The study will focus on two key areas: U.S. military interventions and media representation. First, it will analyze the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq (2001–2021), assessing how U.S.-enforced destabilization in the region perpetuates hegemonic control. Second, it will investigate U.S.-backed, Israel-led Palestinian erasure as a case study of interventionism that positions the U.S. as the self-designated enforcer of global order. …

Protocol To Detect M22g Modification On Single Trna Iso-Decoders By Immuno-Northern Blotting, Sseu-Pei Hwang, Katherine Barondeau, Catherine Denicourt
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
tRNA modifications are highly dynamic and play crucial roles in regulating gene expression. Here, we present an assay for analyzing N2, N2-dimethylguanosine (m22G) modifications on tRNAs using an antibody-based detection approach. We describe steps for isolating tRNAs from human cells via ion-exchange chromatography, capturing specific tRNA iso-decoders on streptavidin magnetic beads, and detecting modifications through immuno-northern blotting. Memantine is an US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drug that is thought to selectively inhibit NMDA-subtype of ionotropic glutamate receptors (NMDARs). NMDARs enable calcium influx into neurons and are critical for normal brain function. However, increasing evidence shows that calcium influx in neurological diseases is augmented by calcium-permeable AMPA-subtype ionotropic glutamate receptors (AMPARs). Here, we demonstrate that these calcium-permeable AMPARs (CP-AMPARs) are inhibited by memantine. Electrophysiology unveils that memantine inhibition of CP-AMPARs is dependent on their calcium permeability and the presence of their neuronal auxiliary subunit transmembrane AMPAR regulatory proteins (TARPs). Through cryo-electron microscopy we elucidate that memantine …
