Purpose: This study aimed to determine complete toxicity reporting (CTR), and the use of subjective toxicity-minimizing language (TML) among phase III oncology trials.

Methods: Two-arm superiority-design phase III oncology trials published from 2002 to 2020 were reviewed for toxicity data. CTR was defined as reporting total adverse events (TAEs), total serious adverse events (SAEs), total deaths, and study therapy discontinuations because of toxicity. Guideline concordance was defined according to guidelines published in the BMJ (defined as reporting total SAEs, total deaths, and study therapy discontinuations because of toxicity). TML was defined as a set of terms that subjectively downplay the …

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a complex psychiatric disorder with unclear biological mechanisms. Spectrins, cytoskeletal proteins linked to neurodevelopmental disorders, are regulated by the AKT/GSK3 pathway, which is implicated in SCZ. However, the impact of SCZ-related dysregulation of this pathway on spectrin expression and distribution remains unexplored. Here, we show that βIV spectrin protein levels were reduced in neurons of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in SCZ postmortem samples compared to healthy control (HC) from the Human Brain Collection Core (HBCC). To investigate potential links between βIV spectrin and the AKT/GSK3 pathway, we analyzed the PsychEncode dataset, revealing elevated SPTBN4 and AKT2 mRNA …

Alternative cleavage and polyadenylation (APA) is a gene regulatory mechanism used by cells under stress to upregulate proteostasis-promoting transcripts, but how cells achieve this remains poorly understood. Previously, we elucidated a DNA methylation-regulated APA mechanism, in which gene body DNA methylation enhances distal poly(A) isoform expression by blocking CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) binding and chromatin loop formation at APA control regions. We hypothesized that DNA methylation-regulated APA is one mechanism cells employ to induce proteostasis-promoting poly(A) isoforms. At the DNAJB6 cochaperone locus, acute heat shock resulted in binding of stress response transcription factors heat shock factor 1, ATF6, and YY1 at …

Background: Treatment-related changes may occur due to radiation and temozolomide in glioblastoma and can mimic tumor progression on conventional MRI. DCE-MRI enables quantification of the extent of blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, providing information about areas of suspicious postcontrast T1 enhancement. We compared DCE-MRI processing methods for distinguishing true disease progression from pseudoprogression in high-grade gliomas (HGGs).

Methods: We identified 110 patients with HGG treated with surgery and chemoradiation who underwent DCE-MRI to further interrogate areas of new/increasing enhancement. All patients had confirmatory surgery/biopsy with pathology-confirmed progression or pseudoprogression. Scans were performed at 3T and analyzed using nordicICE. The MCA, SSS, …

Innovative therapies such as thermoembolization are expected to play an important role in improving care for patients with diseases such as hepatocellular carcinoma. Thermoembolization is a minimally invasive strategy that combines thermal ablation and embolization in a single procedure. This approach exploits an exothermic chemical reaction that occurs when an acid chloride is delivered via an endovascular route. However, comprehension of the complexities of the biophysics of thermoembolization is challenging. Mathematical models can aid in understanding such complex processes and assisting clinicians in making informed decisions. In this study, we used a Hagen-Poiseuille 1D blood flow model to predict the …

Desmoid tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms characterized by a clonal proliferation of fibroblasts and myofibroblasts. Using the novel contrast-enhanced susceptibility-weighted imaging (CE-SWI) for characterizing desmoid tumors can enhance the separation between fibrous T2-hypointense and cellular T1-enhancing components. We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the CE-SWI signal, volumetric, and radiomics-derived features in assessing desmoid treatment response. This IRB-approved study included 17 single-lesion extremity desmoid fibromatosis patients who underwent standard-of-care MRI, including CE-SWI, from March 2021 to February 2024. Measurements of maximum diameter, volume, and the modified Choi (m-Choi: tumor/muscle T2 ratio) were computed based on CE-SWI and T2-STIR volumetric tumor …

The Sports-Betting Market: A Road To Sports Betting As Viable Investing, Tyler Gottlieb Jul 2025

The Sports-Betting Market: A Road To Sports Betting As Viable Investing, Tyler Gottlieb

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Since its legalization, sports betting has experienced rapid growth, both in terms of economic output and expansion into more states. The current system of sports betting in the United States requires individuals to place bets using a sportsbook. The sportsbook sets the lines on every bet. If an individual wins their bet, the sportsbook pays them money according to the listed odds. If an individual loses their bet, the sportsbook keeps the amount staked. Sportsbooks set lines in a way to ensure that on average, they make money on every bet. This system has been widely accepted, often based on …

Different Beliefs About Collective Victimisation Predict Support For Distinct Resistance Strategies: Survey Findings Among The Kurdish Diaspora, Helin Ünal, Johanna Vollhardt Jul 2025

Different Beliefs About Collective Victimisation Predict Support For Distinct Resistance Strategies: Survey Findings Among The Kurdish Diaspora, Helin Ünal, Johanna Vollhardt

Psychology

People make sense of their group's collective victimisation in different ways. These different collective victimisation beliefs may be linked to distinct resistance strategies against the ingroup's victimisation. However, most studies have only examined a few collective victimisation beliefs and resistance strategies, limited to prototypical collective action and failed to consider which constructs are most relevant for the given context. Addressing these gaps, the present study uses a multimethod approach with findings from a Q methodology study informing a survey study to examine the relationship between context-relevant, understudied collective victimisation beliefs and resistance strategies among Kurds from Turkey and Northern Kurdistan …

The Impact Of Consumer Complaints On Corporate Digital Transformation, Yingchao Lu, Hailing Chang, Yadan Zhou Jul 2025

The Impact Of Consumer Complaints On Corporate Digital Transformation, Yingchao Lu, Hailing Chang, Yadan Zhou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines the impact of consumer complaints on corporate digital transformation and its underlying mechanisms. Using quarterly data from China's Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2018 to 2023, the empirical results show that an increase in consumer complaints significantly hinders corporate digital transformation. Mechanism analysis reveals that consumer complaints raise legal risks and non-productive costs for firms, leading them to allocate more resources toward short-term crisis management rather than long-term digital development. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that this inhibitory effect is more pronounced in firms with weaker cybersecurity governance, firms whose executives lack a digital background, and firms …

Evaluation Of Waste Plastic Addition Via Dry Method On Asphalt Mixture Performance, Isabella Madeira Bueno Jul 2025

Evaluation Of Waste Plastic Addition Via Dry Method On Asphalt Mixture Performance, Isabella Madeira Bueno

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Incorporating waste plastic (WP) into hot mix asphalt (HMA) offers a promising approach to enhance recycling rates and improve asphalt concrete (AC) performance, particularly in moisture damage resistance. However, results vary widely due to differences in WP types, sizes, and mixing methods. The lack of standardized procedures, especially for the dry process, has led to inconsistent integration and unclear roles of WP in AC mixtures. Studies suggest that introducing WP to pre-heated aggregates at temperatures exceeding its melting point can enhance mixture resistance to rutting, cracking, and moisture damage. In this context, this study was conducted in two phases to …

Misinformation Regulations: Early Evidence On Corporate Social Media Strategy, Richard M. Crowley, Yun Lou, Samuel T. Tan, Liandong Zhang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Against the backdrop of an increasing threat of misinformation on social media, several countries have enacted regulations to curb the spread of misinformation. This study examines how corporate social media strategy responds to misinformation regulations. Using a large cross-country dataset of corporate tweets and a stacked regression analysis, we show that misinformation regulations lead to less corporate social media disclosure. This result suggests that by deterring misinformation, these regulations reduce firms’ need to use social media to counteract its adverse effects. Additional analyses show that the effect is more pronounced among countries with higher social media usage and countries with …

Hernia Recurrence Risk Matters More Than Mesh Type To Patients Undergoing Ventral Hernia Repair, Stephanie Martinez Ugarte, Mokunfayo O Fajemisin, Chelsea J Guy-Frank, Dalya M Ferguson, Jonah J Stulberg, Lillian S Kao, Julie L Holihan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: Patients' perceptions about synthetic mesh for ventral hernia repair (VHR) may stem from a lack of knowledge of risks. We assessed patients' threshold for accepting the risk of hernia recurrence to avoid synthetic mesh.

Methods: Patients ≥18 y old with prior or upcoming VHR viewed a one-time video decision aid describing recurrence risk with biologic versus synthetic mesh. Patients chose between these options using a probability trade-off (PTO) technique, varying hernia recurrence rate with biologic mesh. Based on randomized trials, the recurrence rate using synthetic mesh was 9%. The PTO score was the recurrence rate (0%-100%) at which patients …

Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory Approach To Rotationally Inelastic Molecular Collisions Implemented On A Quantum Computer, Jonathan Andrade-Plascencia, Tamila Kuanysheva, Dulat Bostan, Brian K. Kendrick, Dmitri Babikov Jul 2025

Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory Approach To Rotationally Inelastic Molecular Collisions Implemented On A Quantum Computer, Jonathan Andrade-Plascencia, Tamila Kuanysheva, Dulat Bostan, Brian K. Kendrick, Dmitri Babikov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

All elements of a quantum algorithm for calculations of rotationally inelastic molecule + atom scattering within the framework of a mixed quantum/classical theory are outlined. In this approach, the rotational motion of the molecule is described quantum mechanically using the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, while the scattering process of two collision partners is treated classically. The matrix of potential coupling is precomputed on a classical processor, whereas the quantum hardware is used to propagate the system of coupled equations for the rotational state-to-state transitions. All quantum circuits needed for practical implementation of the algorithm are presented. First, the quantum codes written …

Expanding Equity And Innovation In Pharmaceutical Law And Drug Development: Paying Clinical Trial Participants For Their Data, Steve Calandrillo, Bernadette Tosti, Jefferson Smith, Jamison Koeman Jul 2025

Expanding Equity And Innovation In Pharmaceutical Law And Drug Development: Paying Clinical Trial Participants For Their Data, Steve Calandrillo, Bernadette Tosti, Jefferson Smith, Jamison Koeman

Articles

Bringing a drug to market is exceedingly expensive and exposes pharmaceutical manufacturers to significant legal risk. But when companies are successful, their profits make the PowerBall jackpot look like petty cash. Staggering rewards measure in the billions or millions for the firms, CEOs, pharmacies, drug benefit managers, data brokers, and many more actors in the pharmaceutical-to-patient pipeline. The only individuals who don’t get paid handsomely are the clinical trial participants, whose voluntary participation and data helped make those successes possible. It is long past time that we reform the legal and regulatory roadblocks to paying clinical trial participants in the …
