The Economic Effects Of Deportation On The U.S. Labor Market, Abigayle Lantz Jul 2025

The Economic Effects Of Deportation On The U.S. Labor Market, Abigayle Lantz

Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics

The potential economic consequences of mass deportation policies on the U.S. economy, specifically those reliant on immigrant labor, are examined. Evidence from economic models and various studies reveals that mass deportation would result in significant disruptions, including labor shortages, decreased productivity, and higher costs for firms and people. Contrary to claims that native-born workers would benefit from increased job opportunities and higher wages, the evidence shows that mass deportation would harm native workers. Historical precedents, such as the Secure Communities initiative indicate that deportation efforts in the past have led to detrimental economic outcomes and disproportionately affected native workers. Additionally, …

How To Become A Statesperson: A Practical And Aspirational Guide For Students And Young Professionals, John Shaw

Institute Publications

How do you become a statesperson? This aspirational and practical guide is Shaw's considered response to such an intriguing and consequential question. The author's hope is that the reader explores these ideas and uses them as a springboard to assemble his or her own plan to become a superb citizen and then an effective statesperson. This will be a life-long journey. Shaw firmly believes that statesmanship is not a gift or a genius bestowed on a select few. Rather, it is a cast of mind, a pattern of behavior, a set of skills, and a serious commitment that can be …

Pop Culture In Appalachia: West Virginia Pop Culture Conventions, Heather Lauer

Librarian Research

This creative graduate humanities project explores the development, impact, and challenges of pop culture conventions in West Virginia and the implications on the broader Appalachian region. Through in-depth interviews with organizers of eight regional conventions—including HerdCon, Tsubasacon, Causeacon, and the Mothman Festival— I examined the motivations behind organizing such events, the cultural and logistical hurdles faced, and the personal and communal rewards experienced by those involved. By investigating how these events foster community, promote regional tourism, and provide inclusive spaces for fandoms, the project highlights the importance of pop culture in shaping identity and engagement in rural Appalachia. Special attention …

The Power Of No ..As A Creative Path, Richard C. Moore Mr Jul 2025

The Power Of No ..As A Creative Path, Richard C. Moore Mr

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

This paper is a homage to the power of No and the act of rejection as a creative force and impetus. The paper will use ,as a case study, the raising of interest and funds for a recently completed independent Australian documentary called Stelarc -Suspending Disbelief. In essence the production is a bio -pic of one of Australia's most notorious performance artists - a Melbourne based man who goes simply by the name of Stelarc.

Apart from a narrative that positions the production as an outlier ,the paper will include references to correspondence and funding agreements /disagreements over a 5 …

Up In Smoke: How Recent Court Rulings Have Torched Big Tech’S Litigation Strategy And Why It Matters, David Earl Wietlispach Jul 2025

Up In Smoke: How Recent Court Rulings Have Torched Big Tech’S Litigation Strategy And Why It Matters, David Earl Wietlispach

Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)

As the title of this paper suggests, there are parallels between what happened to Big Tobacco and what could happen to Big Tech should its litigation strategy fail. Big Tech, like Big Tobacco before it, could stand to lose billions of dollars in judgments and settlements. More importantly, regulations—if allowed to take root—could upend Big Tech’s platform business model. Either outcome, or both, could fundamentally rewrite the relationship between Big Tech and its users. If Big Tech’s litigation strategy truly goes up in smoke, these colossal corporations could find themselves in a magnificent mess.

Constitutional Carry, Stand-Your-Ground Laws And Defensive Firearm Use, Mark P. Gius

Pennsylvania Economic Review

Over the past several years, there has been a significant increase in the number of states allowing concealed weapons carry without a permit (constitutional carry), and an increase in the number of states that have enacted stand-your-ground laws. The purpose of the present study is to determine if the enactment of constitutional carry and stand-your-ground laws have had any statistically significant effects on incidents of defensive firearm use. Using a fixed effects, negative binomial model, it was found that both constitutional carry and stand-your-ground laws resulted in an increase in the number of casualties of defensive firearm uses (injured and …

Surface runoff significantly contributes to environmental hazards such as floods in Indonesia, including in Borobudur District. Based on watershed delineation, the administrative area of Borobudur District is predominantly located within the Sileng Subwatershed. The rehabilitation zones managed by PT Adaro Indonesia are located in several specific areas within this subwatershed. This study utilizes the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model integrated with GIS (Geographic Information System) to simulate surface runoff quantitaively in the Sileng subwatershed, part of the Progo watershed in Central Java Province. SWAT is applied in this research to simulate surface runoff in both watershed and …

The Influence Of Millennial Women In Leadership: Examining Emotional Intelligence And Motivations Of Millennial Women, Leah Gossai

PhD in Organizational Leadership

This quantitative study explored the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and motivation to lead (MTL) among millennial women in leadership roles. Using the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS) and the Motivation to Lead (MTL) framework, the research examined how four EI dimensions, self-emotion appraisal (SEA), others’ emotion appraisal (OEA), use of emotion (UOE), and regulation of emotion (ROE), relate to three MTL dimensions: affective-identity (AIMTL), social-normative (SNMTL), and non-calculative (NCMTL). Data were collected from 117 millennial women leaders across various industries in the United States. Results revealed a significant negative correlation between SEA and NCMTL, suggesting that those …

A Quantitative Study Of Presidents At Public And Private 4-Year Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Richard J. Gallot, Jr. Jul 2025

A Quantitative Study Of Presidents At Public And Private 4-Year Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Richard J. Gallot, Jr.

PhD in Organizational Leadership

There has been a notable increase in presidential turnover at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), leading to significant leadership challenges (Freeman & Gasman, 2014). Abrupt leadership changes create instability that impacts recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and staff, as well as overall morale on campuses (Gasman et al., 2010). Despite the importance of effective leadership, there is limited research specifically focusing on HBCU presidencies (Freeman & Palmer, 2020). Although the American Council on Education (ACE) has surveyed college and university presidents every 5 years since 1986, few studies have investigated HBCU presidents as a distinctive group. Existing research …

Minority Day Hearing On American Innovation And The Future Of Digital Assets: From Blueprint To A Functional Framework, Hilary J. Allen Jul 2025

Minority Day Hearing On American Innovation And The Future Of Digital Assets: From Blueprint To A Functional Framework, Hilary J. Allen

Legislative Testimony & Comments

When we hear from the crypto industry that existing regulation is incompatible with their technology, that is a misdirection. It is entirely possible for a blockchain-based technology business to comply with existing investor protection and financial stability regulation. However, for many crypto businesses, it may be true that existing regulation is incompatible with the economics of their business model, especially if their business model depends on doing things that we have learned, over the years, tend to harm people. But we have little to lose as a society from limiting the profitability of this kind of business model; unfortunately, the …

La Salud Intercultural Aymara En El Contexto De La Muerte Y La Unidad De Cuidado Paliativo En El Hospital Regional De Arica, Chile, Phoebe Dennison

Chile: Public Health, Traditional Medicine, and Community Empowerment

Chile’s health system requires the inlcusion of intercultural health for indigenous populations. This includes palliative care. Indigenous patients come from different belief backgrounds that shape their understanding of death and health practices. Indigenous patients should be given culturally relevant end of life care that respects their beliefs. Intercultural health can be difficult to implement at any point in the patient’s life. Northern Chile has a significant population of Aymara people, an indigenous group. The Aymara people have a cosmovision that is intertwined with the natural world and believes death is the spirit’s journey to the next life. In the region …

Whose Right(S)?: Civil Rights Impact Of Cultural Conflicts In The Curriculum, S. David Mitchell Jul 2025

Whose Right(S)?: Civil Rights Impact Of Cultural Conflicts In The Curriculum, S. David Mitchell

Faculty Publications

Statutes seeking to prohibit the teaching of certain curricular topics that are considered divisive infringe upon the civil rights of students, parents, and teachers. The conflict over what should be taught implicates the rights of students, specifically their right to receive and to learn information; the rights of parents, specifically the right to control the education of their children; and the rights of teachers, specifically the First Amendment and academic freedom. “Anti-Woke” legislation, as it is broadly termed, is designed to silence those who seek to engage in the critical analysis of the structural and systemic barriers that have prevented …

Music & Performance in Muslim Contexts

An illuminating account of Ismaili music, spiritual poetry and social change in Badakhshan.
