Communication Research Trends
Multi-channel cable, direct broadcast satellite and immediate access to computer data banks promise an immense variety ofinformation at our finger tips. But many are questioning whether this will mean real diversity of public access or simply many more channels in the hands of fewer and fewer industrial giants. Tne rapid introduction of new communication technologies is bringing to the fore all of the old policy dilemmas regarding concentration of economic power in the mass media. In the background are the perennial concerns to guarantee the right to communicate and to encourage diversity of opinion in the debate of public decisions. …
Secrecy, Privacy And The Right To Information
Secrecy, Privacy And The Right To Information
Communication Research Trends
George Orwell's 1984 is the vision of the ultimate totalitarian state. The citizens ruled by Big Brother surrender all control over their lives, their personal privacy is abolished, and government surveillance is ubiquitous and inescapable. Meanwhile, impenetrable secrecy protects and enhances the power of the rulers and their agents.
Many people find disturbing echoes of Orwell's nightmare in present-day democratic societies. They point to growing control of all aspects of everyday life by governments and large corporations, to the storage of more and more sensitive personal information in ever larger data banks, and to continuing 'Watergate type' revelations of abuse …

Existing content discovery systems often require complex account linking processes or rely on device-specific data, creating fragmented user experiences across different platforms. Disclosed herein is a system and method for cross-platform content recommendation utilizing a Video Discovery API. This technology enables applications to securely transmit user activity data and content state information to a central service. The core operation involves inferring a relationship between third-party user identities and a platform’s internal user identity using device associations. This facilitates the seamless exchange and propagation of user data across various devices and platforms without explicit account linking. The primary purpose is to …

The Role Of Sglt2 Inhibitors In Atherosclerosis: A Systematic Review, Mohammad Hamza Bin Abdul Maik, Muhammad Ibtisam, Sarah Sheikh, Muhammad Awais Bin Abdul Malik, Ayesha Ihsan, Muhammad Arham, Usman Haq, Abida Parveen
Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Background
Atherosclerosis, a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, involves lipid accumulation, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, initially developed for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), have demonstrated cardiovascular benefits beyond glycemic control. Emerging evidence suggests their potential role in slowing atherosclerosis progression and enhancing plaque stability.
Methods
A systematic review of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was conducted to identify preclinical and clinical studies on SGLT2 inhibitors and atherosclerosis. Studies published in English up to December 2024 were screened using predefined criteria. Data on mechanisms, lipid metabolism, endothelial function, vascular inflammation, and …

Artificial Intelligence Policies In Bioethics And Health Humanities: A Comparative Analysis Of Publishers And Journals, Christopher Bobier, Daniel Rodger, Daniel Hurst
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
INTRODUCTION: Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) pose novel ethical and practical challenges for scholarly publishing. Although AI-related policies are emerging in many disciplines, little is known about the extent and clarity of AI guidance in bioethics and health humanities journals.
METHODS: A search of publicly available journal lists from the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, Health Humanities Consortium, and Association for Medical Humanities was supplemented with Google Scholar's top 20 bioethics journals ranked by h5-index. This yielded 54 unique journals, of which 50 remained after excluding those without a functional website or recent publications. AI policies were reviewed …

Wrapped In The American Flag: Liberal Activism And Queer Political Organizing Post-1940s, Sam Markley
Wrapped In The American Flag: Liberal Activism And Queer Political Organizing Post-1940s, Sam Markley
IdeaFest
By analyzing the United States Lavender Scare and immigration policy of the 1950s, this paper attempts to shed light on how the distinction between “American” and “Un-American” remains at the center of Queer rights advocacy. The heightened fear over the survival of the nation, along with the view of Queer immigrants as threats to the nation, was used to tighten immigration restrictions. This restriction, however, is complicated by existing prejudices against racial minorities and women. Queer rights groups began to rise to prominence during this time and mobilize against claims that they were anti-American or subversive deviants, working through the …
Third To Fifth-Grade Teachers’ Challenges When Teaching Reading Comprehension Skills To English Language Learners In Northern Virginia, Lorraine A. Wickham-Ellis
Third To Fifth-Grade Teachers’ Challenges When Teaching Reading Comprehension Skills To English Language Learners In Northern Virginia, Lorraine A. Wickham-Ellis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Third to fifth-grade teachers in a Northern Virginia Title 1 elementary school faced challenges when teaching reading comprehension skills to English language learners (ELLs) which impacted ELLs’ performance on state-mandated tests. Framed by Cummins’s second language acquisition theory, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore third to fifth-grade teachers’ challenges in teaching reading comprehension skills to ELLs and their suggestions for improved training and resources in a Northern Virginia Title 1 elementary school. Two research questions addressed the teachers’ challenges and suggestions for improved training and resources. Semistructured interviews were used to collect qualitative data from nine, …

Introduction To Sociology: Interaction And Social Structure, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D.
Open Educational Resources
Abstract
This paper explores the intricate interplay between micro- and macro-sociological perspectives on social interaction, identity, and structure. Through an examination of theoretical approaches such as symbolic interactionism, dramaturgy, and social exchange, it highlights how individuals construct and perform identities within complex webs of social expectations—particularly shaped by factors like race, status, and role dynamics. The discussion extends to the function of social networks in influencing opportunities, notably in the context of employment, underscoring the nuanced role of weak ties. The analysis further delves into the significance of social status, distinguishing between ascribed, achieved, master, and salient statuses, and examines …

Introduction To Sociology: Sex And Gender, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D.
Open Educational Resources
Abstract
This paper explores the complex interplay between sex and gender, focusing on how societal structures, historical contexts, and cultural norms shape gender roles and expectations. Drawing on the works of influential theorists such as Margaret Mead and researchers like Maccoby and Jacklin, the discussion distinguishes between biological sex differences and socially constructed gender distinctions. The analysis highlights the pervasive influence of gender socialization through agents such as family, peers, educational institutions, and media, which collectively reinforce stereotypes and stratify opportunities for individuals. The evolution of gender stratification is traced from the post-World War II era to the present, documenting …

Abstract
A Synthesis of Sociological Perspectives on Culture and Social Evolution This paper provides an in-depth exploration of culture as a foundational element in the study of sociology, dissecting its central components—knowledge, language, symbols, values, norms, and material objects—and their profound impact on society. Through the examination of cultural integration and diversity, the analysis foregrounds the dynamic tensions between assimilation and the preservation of subcultures, illustrating how these forces shape identities, relationships, and social cohesion in contemporary contexts. The discussion offers nuanced insights into the processes by which dominant and minority cultures interact, negotiate power, and navigate the challenges of …
