Using The Companioning Model And Technological Innovations To Create Spaces Of Belonging In Counselor Education Programs, Kailey Bradley, Ellise Nolan, Fawn Gordon, Emily Horton

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

This conceptual manuscript seeks to address challenges experienced by counseling students regarding feelings of non-belonging. We propose that the companioning model of grief counseling be integrated into existing counselor education curriculum through technological innovations to cultivate a sense of belonging. Due to the model’s alignment with humanistic counseling principles, such as non-judgment and person-centered interventions, the companioning model is applicable to fostering belonging in counselor education learning environments. Each tenet of the companioning model will be described, and a corresponding activity that aligns with the tenet will be explored. Each activity leverages technological innovations that provide a unique intersection that …

Collective Judo: Ethics And Access To Justice In Mass Arbitration Companies, Michael Doman

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Over the past five years, several law firms have engaged in “mass arbitration.” This strategy involves aggregating hundreds or thousands of arbitrations and filing them all at once against a company, sometimes forcing the company to either pay huge sums to defend all the claims or settle with all the claimants. This Article discusses how mass arbitration coordinated by nonlawyers and companies should be legally protected by courts and regulators, provided that companies in this space erect specific ethical safeguards. Most notably, mass arbitration companies should implement better procedures to obtain informed consent from their customers, using technology to lower …

Being There: Perils Of Disembodied Mediation, Rob Mcniff Jul 2025

Being There: Perils Of Disembodied Mediation, Rob Mcniff

Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal

Following the growth of online mediation during the COVID-19 pandemic, practitioners and ADR scholars sought to delineate the virtues and shortcomings of the online process. Many report satisfaction with online mediation. Still, critics find the process devoid of emotional experience or otherwise “dehumanizing.” As ADR practitioners contrast online and face-to-face experiences, and recommend a forum to disputing parties, they should acknowledge that online platforms can never replicate physical encounters between embodied persons. This Article draws on the work of 20th century philosophers, psychologists, and sociologists to explore mediation as corporeal encounter between embodied subjects. Online mediation, by constraining the involvement …

Developing A Curiosity-Centered Pedagogy For Music Technology, Jeff Kaiser Jul 2025

Developing A Curiosity-Centered Pedagogy For Music Technology, Jeff Kaiser

Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction

Two of the foundations of learning are attention and active engagement, the latter being “an algorithm also called curiosity” (Dehaene 2021, p. 145). Curiosity is fundamental to being human, encourages exploration, and when curiosity is engaged, optimizes learning. We know that a person who is not engaged does not learn as much “because learning requires an active generation of hypotheses…” (Dehaene 2021, p. xxvii) as well as testing and refining these hypotheses through exploration. Curiosity motivates and deepens this process.

In music technology, we have the attention of our students, as the relevance and meaningfulness of our area of study …

Presumed Fuegian Storm Petrels Oceanites Oceanicus Chilensis Off São Tomé, Gulf Of Guinea, And In The North And South Atlantic Oceans, Robert L. Flood, Ricardo Lima, Martim Melo, Kirk Zufelt

Marine Ornithology

This note summarises key identification criteria for Fuegian Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus chilensis that permit field separation from Wilson’s Storm Petrel O. o. oceanicus/exasperatus. Multiple sightings of presumed Fuegian Storm Petrel off São Tomé are considered in the light of these identification criteria. Here, we establish a provisional range for presumed Fuegian Storm Petrels in the Atlantic based on relevant literature, photographs in the Macaulay Library, and responses to social media requests.

Marine Ornithology

In 2022, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus resulted in mass mortality throughout seabird colonies in the North Atlantic Ocean. While mortalities and transmission of the virus are being documented, other effects are less understood. We documented nest abandonment and unprecedented reproductive failure by Northern Gannets Morus bassanus at Cape St. Mary’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, the species’ southernmost colony. Reproductive success in 2022 was the lowest on record at 17%, which was likely a result of adults abandoning the nest and succumbing to avian influenza virus (AIV) infection. Following the AIV outbreak at Cape St. Mary’s, we also documented …

Breeding Population Size Of The Pink-Footed Shearwater Ardenna Creatopus On Isla Mocha, Chile, Ryan D. Carle, Tiare Varela, Valentina Colodro, T.J. Clark-Wolf, Jonathan Felis, Peter Hodum, Francisco Javier Astete Castillo, Verónica López

Marine Ornithology

Species population estimates are a fundamental component of conservation planning, but there are deficiencies in reliable data for many seabirds. The Pink-footed Shearwater Ardenna creatopus is a seabird that breeds on three islands worldwide, with the largest population on Isla Mocha, Chile. We aimed to update the breeding population estimate of Pink-footed Shearwaters on Isla Mocha, comparing results from design- and model-based estimation methods. We counted shearwater burrows in 220 randomly generated five-meter-radius plots across pre-defined strata on Isla Mocha. We estimated total number of burrows using area-based extrapolation (design-based method), and separately using a model predicting burrow density based …

Ecological Experiences And Perceptions Of Small-Scale Gillnet And Purse Seine Fishers On Seabirds And Other Non-Target Taxa In The Humboldt Current System, Chile, Cristián G. Suazo, Cristóbal Anguita, Jaime Ojeda, Guillermo Luna-Jorquera, Maritza Sepúlveda, Oliver Yates

Marine Ornithology

Strategies to reduce the negative impacts of fisheries on ecosystems often come into conflict with fishers who have different experiences with, and perceptions of, biodiversity compared to policy makers and fisheries managers. We interviewed 800 fishers along 2400 kilometers of the Humboldt Current System (HCS) coast, assessing fishers’ perceptions of the impacts of marine predators on fishing and their proposals to reduce conflicts with small-scale net fisheries. Vessel captains saw seabirds as positive indicators of fish presence along the HCS (mean probability 62.7%). In contrast, sea lions were perceived negatively, affecting catches for all fishers and causing fishing gear damage …

Stranded Humboldt Penguins Spheniscus Humboldti With Bilateral Blindness Along Chilean Coasts, Alberto J. Alaniz, Catalina Espinoza-Contreras, Isabel Hernández, Pablo M. Vergara, Darío Moreira-Arce, Mario A. Carvajal, Claudia Hidalgo-Corrotea, Ana Francisca Soto

Marine Ornithology

Bilateral blindness is an important cause of mortality in penguin chicks. However, this pathological condition remains little explored for the endangered Humboldt Penguin Spheniscus humboldti. Here, we present the first spatiotemporal dataset detailing young Humboldt Penguins having bilateral blindness. Information was gathered from birds found stranded along the coast of continental Chile over a ten-year (2011– 2021) period. We present a number of cases analyzed by geographical distribution, sex, body mass, and season. Preliminary analysis shows that 73.3% of cases were concentrated along Chile’s central coast. Only 17.1% of individuals were sexed, and the distribution was slightly skewed in favor …

High-Contrast Banners Designed To Deter Seabirds From Gillnets Reduce Target Fish Catch, William A. Montevecchi, Jessika Lamarre, Yann Rouxel, Marina W. Montevecchi, Robert J. Blackmore, Christina Bourne, Caleb S. Spiegel Jul 2025

High-Contrast Banners Designed To Deter Seabirds From Gillnets Reduce Target Fish Catch, William A. Montevecchi, Jessika Lamarre, Yann Rouxel, Marina W. Montevecchi, Robert J. Blackmore, Christina Bourne, Caleb S. Spiegel

Marine Ornithology

The incidental catch of non-target species in fishing gear (i.e., bycatch) is a global threat to sustainability and conservation in marine systems. Seabirds experience substantial bycatch mortality, with gillnets having the greatest impacts of any fishing gear. Widespread mitigation to reduce seabird bycatch in gillnet fisheries is tenuous, and information on bycatch in inshore surface-set gillnets remains a major knowledge gap. To help address these issues, we collaborated with commercial fishers to test the efficacy of high-contrast banners designed to alert seabirds. In waters of Newfoundland, Canada, banners were attached to surface-set gillnets for Atlantic Herring Clupea harengus and were …

Disparate Decadal Trends In Kaua'i Seabird Populations: Possible Effects Of Resource Competition And Anthropogenic Impacts, David Ainley, Stephanie Schneider, Gregory Spencer Jul 2025

Disparate Decadal Trends In Kaua'i Seabird Populations: Possible Effects Of Resource Competition And Anthropogenic Impacts, David Ainley, Stephanie Schneider, Gregory Spencer

Marine Ornithology

Population trends of seabirds nesting on Kaua‘i in the Hawaiian Islands, USA, were assessed across four decades using data from the Save Our Shearwaters (SOS) program. Started in 1979, the SOS database was intended to track the incidence of attraction of Kaua‘i’s seabirds to artificial lights, but recovery rate data also became useful to index population trends. These data documented precipitous declines of Newell’s Shearwater Puffinus newelli through 2017. Here we expand on those efforts by including four additional species and consider data to 2018. All five species exhibited increasing trends during SOS’s first decade, coincidental with increasing human population, …

Observation Of A Leucistic Brown Noddy Anous Stolidus In Tetiaroa, French Polynesia, Simon Ducatez, Jayna L. Devore Jul 2025

Observation Of A Leucistic Brown Noddy Anous Stolidus In Tetiaroa, French Polynesia, Simon Ducatez, Jayna L. Devore

Marine Ornithology

We observed a leucistic Brown Noddy Anous stolidus on the atoll of Tetiaroa in French Polynesia. This individual was mostly light grey, similar in coloration to a Blue Noddy Anous ceruleus. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a Brown Noddy with such plumage. Brown Noddies and White Terns Gygis alba were particularly aggressive towards the aberrantly colored Brown Noddy.

Infanticide In Highly Urbanized Colonies Of Black Skimmers Rynchops Niger, Elizabeth A. Forys, Sarah K. Beres, Abigail L. Mckay, Olivia N. Spicer Jul 2025

Infanticide In Highly Urbanized Colonies Of Black Skimmers Rynchops Niger, Elizabeth A. Forys, Sarah K. Beres, Abigail L. Mckay, Olivia N. Spicer

Marine Ornithology

Infanticide, which is the killing of dependent offspring, occurs in many species of colonial seabirds. Most infanticide attempts are made when chicks wander outside their parents’ territories and are more likely to occur when the colony experiences a disturbance or food is limited. Our objective was to determine the rate of infanticide at three Black Skimmer Rynchops niger colonies located on highly urbanized beaches in Pinellas County, Florida, USA. Infanticide occurred 42 times during 3 223 hours of monitoring (0.013 attempts per hour) over four breeding seasons (2018–2021). More than one third of the infanticide attempts occurred after a disturbance, …

No Evidence Of Avian Malaria In Two Mediterranean Endemic Seabirds, Luca Ilahiane, Federico De Pascalis, Danilo Pisu, David Pala, Federica Ferrario, Marco Cucco, Diego Rubolini, Jacopo G. Cecere, Irene Pellegrino Jul 2025

No Evidence Of Avian Malaria In Two Mediterranean Endemic Seabirds, Luca Ilahiane, Federico De Pascalis, Danilo Pisu, David Pala, Federica Ferrario, Marco Cucco, Diego Rubolini, Jacopo G. Cecere, Irene Pellegrino

Marine Ornithology

In birds, pathogens and diseases—such as avian malaria—can have severe detrimental effects on individual fitness. Pathogen prevalence can vary across species and may differ between populations living in different localities, but screening can aid in our understanding of a disease’s distribution and parasite-host interactions. Although seabirds generally exhibit low avian malaria infection patterns, blood parasites of several species and populations have never been investigated in detail. Using molecular techniques, we screened for blood parasites in two Mediterranean seabirds, the Scopoli’s Shearwater Calonectris diomedea and the Mediterranean Storm Petrel Hydrobates pelagicus melitensis. In addition, we searched for and sampled potential vector …

Marine Ornithology

We describe the first known documentation of on-land foraging by Leach’s Storm Petrels Oceanodroma leucorhoa, a behaviour that has been documented only once before among members of the family Hydrobatidae. During a rain/windstorm from 15 to 17 July 2020 in eastern Newfoundland, individuals fed on coastally spawning and beach-cast capelin Mallotus villosus. This behaviour occurred in conjunction with a marine heatwave in the species’ foraging range. Examination showed that wrecked birds were emaciated with negligible stomach contents. This finding, combined with the abnormal weather and foraging behaviour, suggests that these birds were in a weakened state preceding stranding in coastal …

Southern Influx Of The Pantropical Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria Bulwerii Into The Tasman Sea, Simon B. Z. Gorta Jul 2025

Southern Influx Of The Pantropical Bulwer's Petrel Bulweria Bulwerii Into The Tasman Sea, Simon B. Z. Gorta

Marine Ornithology

Seabirds exploit marine habitats for resources, responding to many complex environmental signals that ultimately drive their distributions. Occasionally, influxes of seabird species to regions outside their normal range occur and determining the drivers of these patterns can aid in understanding their ecology and their conservation. I documented five birdwatching observations of Bulwer’s Petrel Bulweria bulwerii in the Tasman Sea between 24 January and 08 March 2020, roughly 2000 km south of their core range. Based on demographic, environmental, and anecdotal observations of seabirds, cetaceans, and bait fish, I suggest that the influx was most likely resource-driven, rather than accidental, age-related, …

Marine Ornithology

We summarize all reports of Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia recorded in Indonesia, with particular focus on Sumatra (1983–2019). There were 29 records in total, which together indicate that the Caspian Tern is a regular visitor to Indonesia, in contrast to previous assumptions that it is rare. This species has been recorded during the non-breeding period (September to March in Indonesia, and August to April in Sumatra) in small numbers ranging from one to 40 birds. Many potential sites for this species, particularly along east coast of Sumatra, have still not been well explored. Additional search efforts will advance our knowledge …

Wedge-Tailed Shearwater Ardenna Pacifica Fallout Patterns Inform Targeted Management, Brooke Friswold, Keith Swindle, David Hyrenbach, Melissa R. Price

Marine Ornithology

Seabird fledglings are often attracted to artificial, bright lights, leading to their grounding. This phenomenon is termed “fallout” and is associated with an increased risk of mortality from land-based threats. This study evaluated temporal trends and spatial factors, such as fallout clustering near lights and proximity to colonies, to inform targeted management actions. Standardized surveys were conducted from 2002 to 2010 for Wedge-tailed Shearwater Ardenna pacifica (WTSH) fallout on the island of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, USA. First, yearly fallout counts along the transect showed a two-year cycle and identified 25 November as the date with the highest fallout across years. Second, …
