Life-Course And Biography Of Things: Minangkabau Women's Headgear, Attari Putri Denendra, Irmawati Marwoto

International Review of Humanities Studies

Like men, objects also have a biography or life-course. Both biographies are intertwined, so when someone experiences a new life phase transition in their life-course, it will cause changes in the objects attached to them. This is also supported by the statement that the identity is performative. The headgear as one of the elements used by Minangkabau women also represents the identity of the wearer. This research was conducted in three stages: (1) data collection in the form of old photos and literature of Minangkabau women with headgear in Batipuh, Fort de Kock, and Payakumbuh, (2) data processing by analysis …

Russia And The War In Ukraine: Three Critical Myths, Nicholas Kiersey Jul 2025

Russia And The War In Ukraine: Three Critical Myths, Nicholas Kiersey

Political Science Faculty Publications

Though often framed as a conflict between an autocratic regime and a liberal democracy, the Russo-Ukrainian War also represents a direct challenge to the post-1989 global order and its cosmopolitan norms. Paradoxically, many Critical International Relations (IR) theorists—once skeptical of Western militarism—now align with liberal interventionist responses to the war. Drawing on Cunliffe’s concept of the “utopianism of unipolarity,” this article argues that Critical IR has embraced a reductive “good war” narrative that casts Ukraine as a virtuous subaltern state resisting Russian imperialism, while dismissing left critiques as denials of Ukrainian “agency.” In doing so, Critical IR reproduces cultural myths …

From Affordance To Passive Flow: Unveiling The Mechanisms Behind Young Adults' Unplanned Use Of Short Video Platforms, Shishi Wu

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Unplanned usage of short video platforms has become a widespread behavioral pattern, especially among young users who often spend more time on these platforms than they intend to. This phenomenon cannot be fully explained by addiction or self-control failure. This study introduces the construct of Passive Flow, a non-volitional immersion state shaped by platform design. Passive Flow includes three experiential features: users engage without clear goals, gradually lose self-awareness, and experience time distortion. These states are not initiated by deliberate choice but are triggered by algorithmic and interface-level features. To examine this mechanism, the study adopts a two-phase design. The …

Analyzing National War Propaganda Through Comparison Of Diverse Case Studies, Ike Sugitani Jul 2025

Analyzing National War Propaganda Through Comparison Of Diverse Case Studies, Ike Sugitani

Dissertations and Theses

In the build-up to war, national governments utilize propaganda to gather public support for the war effort. In some instances, propaganda campaigns are conducted but war does not occur. This begs the question as to why war follows propaganda campaigns in some cases, but not in others. I argue that propaganda efforts that lead to war can be generally characterized through three major strategies based on a patriotic participatory social structure, a claim to moral authority, and the blending of individual concepts of the state, government and nation. In this study, I analyze the major historical case studies of the …

Transnational Politics Of Cambodian American Ethnic Organizations: Strategies, Motivations, And Impacts, Simin Tan, Wen Chen Jul 2025

Transnational Politics Of Cambodian American Ethnic Organizations: Strategies, Motivations, And Impacts, Simin Tan, Wen Chen

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Since several large-scale migrations to the U.S. in the 1970s, Cambodian Americans have established a number of ethnic organizations aimed at intervening in the political landscape of their homeland. These organizations span from subversive groups seeking to overthrow the Cambodian government through armed insurgency to reformist groups advocating for human rights improvements and peaceful political transformation. The refugee experiences of first-generation Cambodian Americans have served as a key motivator for their involvement in transnational politics, while the degree of social integration shapes the extent to which different generational cohorts engage in these political activities. In addition, both the Cambodian government’s …

Pretty Dangerous: The Romanticization Of Grooming In Pretty Little Liars, Katherine G. Johnson, Emma Grace Gilland

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

Sexual grooming is the deliberate manipulation of a minor by an adult to reduce their sensitivity to sexual contact, with the specific aim of perpetrating child or adolescent sexual abuse (Winters, 2022). Prevalence rates for sexual grooming vary; however, a recent study by Winters and Jeglic (2022) found that approximately 24% of their sample of undergraduate student sample reported experiencing sexual grooming as a minor. These predatory behaviors were prominently featured between lead adolescent and adult characters throughout the popular television show, Pretty Little Liars. This raises concerns about how such behaviors might be perceived when portrayed in popular media …

Modeling The Dynamics Of User Adoption And Abandonment For A Single Product, Uyen Nguyen Jul 2025

Modeling The Dynamics Of User Adoption And Abandonment For A Single Product, Uyen Nguyen

UTC Spring Research and Arts Conference

We introduce a compartmental differential equation model to study the dynamics of user adoption and abandonment for a single product. The model integrates two forms of abandonment: infectious, driven by user interactions, and non-infectious, prompted by external influences. Notably, the infectious abandonment coefficient varies linearly with the number of previous users. We investigate the existence of equilibria of the model and derive the threshold quantity ℛ0. The user-free equilibrium is always present, and its stability is analyzed under the condition ℛ0 < 1. Moreover, a user-prevailing equilibrium does not exist when ℛ0 ≤ 1, but at least one user-prevailing equilibrium is guaranteed when ℛ0 > 1. We further characterize conditions for multiple equilibria and various bifurcations, including saddle-node, 𝑆-shaped, and Hopf bifurcations, and formulate …
