Constitutional Futurism As Pedagogy, Jeremiah Chin Aug 2025

Constitutional Futurism As Pedagogy, Jeremiah Chin

Articles

Constitutional Law has transformed from a course on history to a discussion of current events. Cases like Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo reveal that the study of constitutional law is not a static, or even linear, discussion of constitutional text and history. Law is a shifting, changing enterprise that reflects social constructions of power, authority, and identity. How do we teach, learn, and understand constitutional law that is so laden with history, riddled with theories of consistency and adherence to precedent, but ultimately subject …

College Leaders’ Perspectives Of Diversity At A Community College System In Texas: A Phenomenological Study Of Validation, Xandelyn Wright Washington Aug 2025

College Leaders’ Perspectives Of Diversity At A Community College System In Texas: A Phenomenological Study Of Validation, Xandelyn Wright Washington

All Dissertations

The United States has undergone dramatic changes in student demographics over the last 40 years. Nowhere is this reflected more than in the field of education (Center for Public Education, 2012; Fabina et al., 2023). Disaggregation of student demographics is a useful and common method for measuring student outcomes, and in the United States, non-majority students consistently have lower student outcomes (Gay, 2013; Howard, 2010; Ocay et al., 2023).

Ma and Baum (2016) and McNair et al. (2015) stated that the role of community colleges is pivotal in postsecondary education. As such, college leaders and administrators have focused attention on …

Evaluating Tax Preparers’ Perception Of The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act (Tcja) Through The Lens Of The Tax Misperception Theory, Cari Valita Barnes Aug 2025

Evaluating Tax Preparers’ Perception Of The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act (Tcja) Through The Lens Of The Tax Misperception Theory, Cari Valita Barnes

All Dissertations

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 represented one of the most extensive overhauls of the U.S. tax code in decades. While it is credited with reducing statutory tax burdens, the TCJA also introduced substantial complexity, which shaped tax preparers’ behavior and reshaped the tax preparation industry. Designed to stimulate economic growth through broad changes to both corporate and individual taxation, the TCJA’s impact on the profession cannot be understood without considering how preparers perceived the legislation. This study, therefore, evaluated the effects of the TCJA on tax preparers’ perceptions using the Tax Misperception Theory.

In the late 1960s, many people called for radical, immediate change to America’s political, societal, and cultural structures. The artistic practices of the time reflected the social and political realities of the moment and played a crucial role in advocating for change. The title of the 1968 S.M.S. (Shit Must Stop) subscription art portfolios was a bold and urgent call for action, challenging artists and audiences alike to confront the pressing injustices of the era and inspire a collective awakening to the necessity of transformative change across the United States. Despite a fifty-six-year gap, today we are …

The Final Girl Without The Slasher: Final Girls, Gender, And Community In Psych, Cassidy Crosby Aug 2025

The Final Girl Without The Slasher: Final Girls, Gender, And Community In Psych, Cassidy Crosby

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

This thesis focuses on the “Final Girl” trope, a hallmark of slasher films of the 1970s and 1980s, as it appears in detective procedural television show Psych to analyze what changes in the trope’s usage says about broader changes in American culture. I engage with two key episodes, “Scary Sherry: Bianca’s Toast” and “Tuesday the 17th,” which contain the program’s most direct engagements with the Final Girl trope. Ultimately, I conclude that Psych rejects the hyperindividualism embedded in the Final Girl and some of the trope’s more binary gender norms, while also failing to interrogate other aspects of …

[M]Otherhood: Navigating Work-Family Constraints And Strategies In Pink-Collar Jobs, Madison Brunell Aug 2025

[M]Otherhood: Navigating Work-Family Constraints And Strategies In Pink-Collar Jobs, Madison Brunell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Working mothers continue to confront cultural norms and workplace practices that frame paid labor as incompatible with caregiving. In the workplace, these norms often result in motherhood bias and discrimination due to the incompatibility between norms of the ‘ideal worker’ and the ‘ideal mother’ (Acker 2006; Williams, Blair-Loy and Berdahl 2013). This tension is especially acute in pink-collar jobs, women-dominated occupations in service and care sectors, which are often mischaracterized as mother- friendly despite offering limited flexibility, low pay, and minimal structural support (Sartor, Lange, and Tröster 2023; Deming 2022; Ervin et al. 2022). While prior research has explored the …

Urban air mobility (UAM) is an emerging transportation concept that uses lightweight, efficient aircraft for transporting goods and passengers and performing other logistical activities. One of the biggest challenges in developing UAM from a structural perspective is manufacturing strong and reliable propellers that are lightweight and durable. Traditional manufacturing methods for composite propellers are expensive, time-consuming, and difficult to scale. This study explores a new approach using Composite-Based Additive Manufacturing (CBAM) to produce high-performance propellers more efficiently. CBAM allows for the fabrication of strong, lightweight composite propellers using short manufacturing lead times. However, one challenge with this technique is that …

Optimization Of The Root Zone In Controlled Environment Agriculture, Brendan Fatzinger Aug 2025

Optimization Of The Root Zone In Controlled Environment Agriculture, Brendan Fatzinger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) helps grow plants in spaces where resources like water and nutrients are limited, such as deserts or spacecraft. Effective management of water in the root zone, the area where plant roots grow, is vital to keeping plants healthy, especially in closed-loop systems where water cannot be wasted, as will be necessary for long-duration space missions.

An improved automated watering system designed for use in space-like environments was developed over several trials. Early designs using suction to draw water through tubes faced problems with uneven watering and roots blocking the tubes. Switching to a system that pushed …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Plant biodiversity is crucial for the proper functioning of ecosystems, with many species needed to maintain the variety of functions provided, especially with increasing environmental change. However, plant biodiversity is threatened in many different ecosystems, primarily through habitat loss. Species can be conserved by protecting their original habitat and mitigating for threats such as invasive species or altered disturbance regimes (plant conservation); however, with declining population numbers and continued habitat loss and/or disturbance, it may be necessary to actively move plants (plant restoration). Plant restoration is dependent on developing the capacity to a) reliably propagate plants in a nursery and …

Although tourists provide financial stability and other amenities to these towns, local wellbeing is highly impacted. Outdoor recreation and the nature connections derived from outdoor experiences are major contributors to wellbeing in amenity communities. This research investigates the changes …

Early And Late Season Weed Control In Dormant Alfalfa, Mckenna Saige Barney Aug 2025

Early And Late Season Weed Control In Dormant Alfalfa, Mckenna Saige Barney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Hexazinone + diuron is an herbicide mix commonly used to control weeds in established alfalfa in the late fall or early spring when alfalfa is dormant. If applied outside full dormancy, this mix can cause significant crop injury. The Intermountain West’s cold weather leaves a narrow time frame for applicators to apply herbicide. To help extend the application period to when alfalfa has not yet entered complete dormancy, the burndown herbicide paraquat can be added to the tank mix. Paraquat burns back existing plant matter to prevent hexazinone + diuron from spreading throughout the plant and causing long-term crop injury. …

Evaluating The Effects Of Two Key Temporal Intervals During Pavlovian Training On Conditioned Reinforcement, Gabrielle M. Sutton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Reinforcers are anything that increases or maintains the frequency of a behavior that precedes their occurrence. Reinforcers can be separated into two types, primary and secondary. Primary reinforcers are biologically relevant stimuli like food, water, or drugs that can influence behavior without any prior training. Secondary reinforcers are those that impact behavior through their trained relationship with a primary reinforcer, like money and tokens. For this reason, they are also known as conditioned reinforcers. Conditioned reinforcers are used in therapies and training designed to increase desirable behaviors, but they are also involved in the development and maintenance of maladaptive behaviors …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Across the American West, amenity rich areas have been grappling with population growth, economic shifts, and associated community impacts. Amenity migration, the movement of wealthy suburban and urban individuals to rural areas for the natural amenities and slower paced life, has contributed to much of the change in amenity rich rural places. However, recently, a new process has begun occurring simultaneously with amenity migration. New high net worth (HNW) individuals have been purchasing large parcels of land, often through the acquisition of multiple ranches that are thousands of acres. Little is known about how these new HNW owners impact the …

Power sharing is a key feature of romantic relationships. It is important to understand how various groups navigate power sharing within their relationships. Thirty-one participants who belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (16 women and 15 men) reported on their experience of power-sharing in marriage. In-depth individual and couple interviews revealed that couples engage in four individual and relational processes that impact and promote equality in marriage: systemic influences, self-in-relationship processes, relationship processes, and identity outcomes. These processes have important implications for future research and therapeutic practice with Latter-day Saint, religious, and secular couples.
