From Belief To Practice: Building A Culture Of Disciplinary Literacy, Bradley Stabler, Ruth Poulos Sep 2025

From Belief To Practice: Building A Culture Of Disciplinary Literacy, Bradley Stabler, Ruth Poulos

Michigan Reading Journal

This article tells the story of how Pontiac High School began building a stronger focus on reading, writing, and thinking in every subject. The work started with a few shared questions, not a detailed plan. A small group of teachers and coaches came together to figure out how to help students think more deeply and express their ideas more clearly. Over time, they led staff-wide efforts that included planning lessons together, visiting each other’s classrooms, and trying out new teaching moves. Feedback from students and staff helped guide the work. Along the way, teachers began to shift their instruction, and …

Influence On Shot Peening And Blast Polishing For Rotating Bending Fatigue Strength Of Vacuum Carburized Steel With Circumferential Notch, Yuji Kobayashi, Hayato Taniguchi, Kiyotaka Masaki Sep 2025

Influence On Shot Peening And Blast Polishing For Rotating Bending Fatigue Strength Of Vacuum Carburized Steel With Circumferential Notch, Yuji Kobayashi, Hayato Taniguchi, Kiyotaka Masaki

15th International Conference on Shot Peening

In order to improve fuel efficiency in automobiles, weight reduction is necessary as well as improving engine efficiency. For transmission gears, thickness reduction is necessary for weight reduction. When the thickness is reduced, the cross-sectional area becomes smaller, and the load stress increases. Therefore, higher fatigue strength is required. Most gears carry out carburizing. Shot peening is often used to improve the fatigue strength of carburized heat-treated parts. After shot peening, compressive residual stress is introduced, but at the same time, surface roughness is increased. Therefore, the processing conditions of shot peening are very important. Blast polishing is a processing …

Cricket, Capitalism And Class: From The Village Green To The Cricket Industry, Martin Barrett Sep 2025

Cricket, Capitalism And Class: From The Village Green To The Cricket Industry, Martin Barrett

Global Sport Business Journal

Author Chris McMillan, through Cricket, Capitalism and Class: From the Village Green to the Cricket Industry, provides a definitive and compelling critical sociological investigation of modern cricket’s rise from an English leisure pursuit and role in the expanding capitalism of Empire to today’s multi-billion-dollar cricket industry. This account is constructed through a largely Marxist reading of the sport’s entwining with the processes of capitalism and class. Specifically, class and the class structures reproduced by and through cricket are seen as critical in reproducing a system favorable to both historical and contemporary exploitation and expropriation. As the book transitions from exploring …

Book Review: Interrogating Integration: Sport, Celebrity, And Scandal In The Making Of New Germany, Sangchul Park

Global Sport Business Journal

This review discusses Interrogating Integration: Sport, Celebrity, and Scandal in the Making of New Germany by Kate Zambon. Through discourse analysis of media narratives, Zambon demonstrates that athletes and celebrities of immigrant or minority backgrounds become symbolic figures whose successes and failures test the nation’s integration project, with case studies including the 2006 World Cup, the Sarrazin debate, and the Integration Bambi Awards. The book’s originality lies in moving beyond legal or policy frameworks to foreground mediated narratives, offering clear and coherent arguments supported by a logically organized structure. While the absence of comparative perspectives and audience reception studies leaves …

Reduced Order Approach For Peening Stress Field Variability, Langdon Feltner, Paul Mort Sep 2025

Reduced Order Approach For Peening Stress Field Variability, Langdon Feltner, Paul Mort

15th International Conference on Shot Peening

A common goal in shot peening research is to connect operational parameters to resultant residual stress fields, providing a means to control and optimize the effectiveness of surface treatment. In practice, experimental measurements of residual stresses are often averaged values over regions that are large in comparison to an impact dimple. In fact, the stochastic nature of impact locations leads to residual stress fields that are distributed. Finite element peening simulations confirm this observation. The goal of this report is to connect operational parameters to localized fluctuations in residual stress through probabilistic reasoning (Figure 1). In particular, the development of …

Adaptation Of Shot Peen Parameters For Gear Geometry, David J. Breuer, Beth Matlock Sep 2025

Adaptation Of Shot Peen Parameters For Gear Geometry, David J. Breuer, Beth Matlock

15th International Conference on Shot Peening

Shot peening is a well established process for the surface enhancement of gearing. Gearing is a primary example of a high cycle fatigue application that can benefit from residual stress enhancement. Designing shot peening parameters to specific gear geometry based on material, heat treatment, and surface finish is a more precise way to achieve better performance outcomes. One of the best tools to assist in the optimal shot peening is x-ray diffraction (XRD) and its ability to measure small differences that can result in significant performance outcomes. XRD residual stress measurements are a direct measurement of elastic strain. The diffraction …

Numerical Assessment Of Shot Peening Contribution To The Fatigue Strength Of Gear Tooth Root, Gurutz Cortabitarte Laucirica, Xuban Telleria, Iñigo Llavori, Ibai Ulacia, Miren Larrañaga, Jon Ander Esnaola Sep 2025

Numerical Assessment Of Shot Peening Contribution To The Fatigue Strength Of Gear Tooth Root, Gurutz Cortabitarte Laucirica, Xuban Telleria, Iñigo Llavori, Ibai Ulacia, Miren Larrañaga, Jon Ander Esnaola

15th International Conference on Shot Peening

Gears are commonly treated with shot peening (SP) and/or case hardening to enhance fatigue resistance. However, their effects are often conservatively assessed using standardized methods, which can limit their optimal application in industrial components. Particularly, the effect of SP over case-hardened gears remains insufficiently explored. Therefore, the present study evaluates the contribution of SP on single tooth bending fatigue (STBF) strength of raw and case-hardened spur gears, commonly used in automotive and heavy machinery industries. In the study four conditions are addressed: (i) untreated, (ii) case-hardened, (iii) shot-peened, and (iv) case-hardened and shot-peened. First, the residual stress field of the …

Accelerating Localized Climate Innovation Through South-South Peer-Learning Platforms, Nayantara K. Arora

COP30

South-South knowledge exchange is a powerful but underutilized driver of localized climate innovation in the Global South. As climate change disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), mechanisms for mutual learning, indigenous knowledge-sharing, and context-appropriate technology diffusion are vital. South-South peer-learning platforms offer a scalable pathway to empower communities in the Global South to co-create and adopt effective climate innovations, particularly in the systems of human health, livelihoods, and youth inclusion emphasized by Egypt’s Sharm El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda (SAA). This policy paper argues that integrating these platforms into national Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) and Capacity Building strategies can accelerate …

The Climate League: A Competitive Governance Model To Enhance Ndc 3.0 Ambition And Delivery, Mohamed Noby

COP30

The first Global Stocktake (GST) has confirmed that the world is off-track; where current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are far from sufficient to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target. Despite decades of climate negotiations, an ambition gap, implementation deficit, and climate finance shortfall continue to hinder meaningful progress; driven largely by a focus on securing commitments rather than ensuring their implementation and real-world impact. This policy paper identifies the governance gap at the heart of these failures and proposes a new framework: The Climate League. which aims to transform climate action into a dynamic competitive process by ranking countries based …

Athletes As Ace Ambassadors: A Framework For Integrating Sports Personalities Into Climate Communication Strategies, Abderrahim Baalla Sep 2025

Athletes As Ace Ambassadors: A Framework For Integrating Sports Personalities Into Climate Communication Strategies, Abderrahim Baalla

COP30

Global institutions face a critical "volume-over-impact" communication crisis, where thousands of official reports and meetings fail to translate into public engagement. This systemic issue is directly applicable to the climate sector, where conventional communication struggles to cut through the noise. This failure particularly undermines Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE), as it hinders efforts to raise awareness and provide vital climate education to the public, especially youth. To address this gap, this paper proposes the 'Athletes for Climate Empowerment (ACE) Ambassadors' Framework. Based on successful models like the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador program, this framework provides a practical pathway to formalize and …

Circular Climate Empowerment Policy: Transforming Uco Into Biodiesel, Green Jobs, And Inclusive Climate Education Through Community-Led Action, Aisyah Nabihah

COP30

The world is entering a critical phase in the climate crisis, with temperatures soaring past 50°C in some regions and the global average already an increase of 1.1°C compared to the pre-industrial levels. Rising emissions continue to disrupt ecosystems, threaten coastal populations, and endanger water security. While fossil fuels remain the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, waste mismanagement and educational inequality are two often-overlooked forces undermining climate resilience. For example, 1 liter of Used Cooking Oil (UCO) can pollute 1,000 m³ of clean water. This policy paper introduces an alternative path: leveraging community-led circular economy models to drive grassroots …

From Awareness To Action: The Educational Pillar Of Capacity Building And Ace, Eman Akrout

COP30

Education has always been identified as the most potent medium for sustaining long-term climate action by helping students, teachers, and communities understand climate risks and participate in solution building. This literature review will therefore focus on how education helps build capacity and contributes to Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE). As recent reports indicated by IPCC and UNESCO have also highlighted, climate education heightens the level of awareness supportive of green jobs while improving the resilience of a community. However, there is a lack of climate material in most schools with untrained teachers posing a huge gap in the international efforts …

Operationalising Blue Carbon: Australia's Framework As A Model For Global Nature-Based Climate Mitigation, Chelsea Golding Sep 2025

Operationalising Blue Carbon: Australia's Framework As A Model For Global Nature-Based Climate Mitigation, Chelsea Golding

COP30

Blue carbon ecosystems offer a critical solution to nature-based climate change mitigation. These habitats not only sequester significant amounts of carbon per hectare but also support biodiversity and increase climate resilience for coastal communities. Yet, despite the widespread recognition of these benefits in global climate discussions, most existing carbon sequestration and crediting frameworks remain focused on terrestrial ecosystems and fail to account for the greater variability in marine and costal habitats. This policy gap creates a significant barrier in the capacity for costal carbon sequestration projects to be scaled globally. Australia has addressed this implementation gap at a national level …
