The Current State Of Diagnostics For Neuroimmunological Disorders In Africa, Malya Sahu, Mashina Chomba, Fiifi Duodu, Monica Diaz, Dilraj Sokhi, Deanna Saylor

Internal Medicine, East Africa

The epidemiology of neuroimmunological disorders in Africa remains poorly understood. Regional variation in diagnostics and provider knowledge has led to challenges in real-world application of diagnostic criteria. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of clinicians practicing in Africa to characterize the current state of clinical diagnostic resources and developed a clinician-driven prioritized action plan. 130 respondents from 24 out of 54 countries in Africa participated (44% national response rate). Most respondents specialized in neurology (n = 86, 66%) and practiced in an urban setting (n = 84, 65%). While all participating countries had access to a neurologist and ophthalmologist, only half …

The Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) And Its Importance To Organism Survival And Development, Christopher Monnett Smith

Holster Scholar Projects

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) has been the subject of numerous studies regarding the functioning of the brain in relation to topics such as neural plasticity and neural survival. However, BDNF has also been implicated in the induction of changes not only in neural tissue but multiple other tissue types across the human body. The aim of this literature review is to provide a comprehensive, yet brief, overview of BDNF’s influence on the functioning of the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular, and immune systems.

Is Your Data Good, Bad, Or Neutral?: Redefining Concreteness For Data Breach Harms, Jeeyoon Lim Oct 2025

Is Your Data Good, Bad, Or Neutral?: Redefining Concreteness For Data Breach Harms, Jeeyoon Lim

Fordham Law Review

In recent years, the Supreme Court has tightened federal court standing requirements for intangible harms, including statutory harms. In TransUnion LLC v. Ramirez, the Court held that a mere statutory violation, absent a common-law analogue, is not sufficiently concrete to grant standing. The Court did not provide clear guidance as to how stringent the common-law analogue analysis must be, other than that it does not require an “exact duplicate.” Because of the ever-evolving nature of digital data, data breach victims attempting to enforce their statutory right to privacy in federal court have struggled to rely on tradition and history …

Are Your Secrets Safe?: Imposing A Fiduciary Duty On Healthcare Ai Developers Dealing With Sensitive Health Information, Lauren Quinn Oct 2025

Are Your Secrets Safe?: Imposing A Fiduciary Duty On Healthcare Ai Developers Dealing With Sensitive Health Information, Lauren Quinn

Fordham Law Review

In 1996, Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to establish standards for transmitting health information. For decades, the HIPAA Privacy Rule has operated as the primary regulation protecting health information in the United States. However, in the decades since HIPAA was enacted, new technologies have demonstrated the shortcomings of the Privacy Rule. In particular, the development of healthcare artificial intelligence (AI) has created new privacy concerns and exacerbated existing ones. This Note examines the current healthcare privacy framework in the United States and considers how healthcare AI complicates it. This Note also explores how AI developers …

Legal Protections For Gig Workers: A Comparative Socio-Legal Study Of Indonesia And India, Vidisha Shekhawat, Pranjal Khare

The Indonesian Journal of Socio-Legal Studies

The platform economy has transformed the lines of labour in the last few years across both developed and developing countries. In the case of other countries, such as Indonesia and India, where informal employment has been a long-standing characteristic of the labour force, the rise of digital platforms, including Gojek, Grab, Swiggy, and Zomato, has added another layer of complexity to already existing labour issues. These services provide flexibility and earning potential, albeit in exchange for social safety nets and work rights. This paper undertakes a doctrinal and comparative socio-legal study to observe the way the legal jurisdictions of Indonesia …

A 3-Item Short Version Of The Fear Of Missing Out (Fomo) Scale For Trait And Time-Intensive Designs: Measurement Invariance And Psychometric Properties, Eva M. Hisham, Andree Hartanto, Nadyanna M. Majeed

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Research on Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) has gained prominence alongside the rise of digital connectivity and social media, which offer individuals continuous access to others’ experiences in real time. Importantly, it has been increasingly recognised as an important psychological construct, closely associated with various problematic digital behaviours. As the fields of media psychology and human-computer interaction increasingly adopt time-intensive methodologies (e.g., daily and weekly studies) to capture dynamic experiences of technology use, there is a growing need for brief yet psychometrically-sound measures of FoMO suitable for such designs. The present work reports the development of a 3-item FoMO scale …

Reproducibility Debt In Scientific Software, Zara Hassan, Christoph Treude, Graham Williams, Michael Norrish, Alex Potanin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Reproducibility Debt (RpD) refers to accumulated technical and organisational issues in scientific software that hinder the ability to reproduce research results. While reproducibility is essential to scientific integrity, RpD remains poorly defined and under-addressed. This study introduces a formal definition of RpD and investigates its causes, effects, and mitigation strategies using a mixed-methods approach involving a systematic literature review (214 papers), interviews (23 practitioners), and a global survey (59 participants). We identify seven categories of contributing issues, 75 causes, 110 effects, and 61 mitigation strategies. Findings are synthesised into a cause-effect model and supported by taxonomies of team roles and …

Visual-Enhanced Multimodal Framework For Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem, Peng Zhao, Zhiguang Cao, Di Wang, Wen Song, Wei Pang, You Zhou, Yuan Jiang Oct 2025

Visual-Enhanced Multimodal Framework For Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem, Peng Zhao, Zhiguang Cao, Di Wang, Wen Song, Wei Pang, You Zhou, Yuan Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multimodal models leverage complementary information across modalities to enrich feature representations. While visual information shows potential in representing structure for some combinatorial optimization problems (COPs), its application to complex scheduling like the Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) remains underexplored. Current learning-based FJSP solvers predominantly rely on handcrafted state features. This dependence can lead to inconsistencies and may not fully capture the problem's intricate dynamics. Crucially, these methods overlook visual modalities. Visual representations offer a distinct advantage by inherently capturing the global topological structure and complex resource interactions within the FJSP state. Unlike localized handcrafted features, this holistic, structural view …

Mitigating Cross-Modal Representation Bias For Multicultural Image-To-Recipe Retrieval, Qing Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu Cao, Ee-Peng Lim Oct 2025

Mitigating Cross-Modal Representation Bias For Multicultural Image-To-Recipe Retrieval, Qing Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu Cao, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing approaches for image-to-recipe retrieval have the implicit assumption that a food image can fully capture the details textually documented in its recipe. However, a food image only reflects the visual outcome of a cooked dish and not the underlying cooking process. Consequently, learning cross-modal representations to bridge the modality gap between images and recipes tends to ignore subtle, recipe-specific details that are not visually apparent but are crucial for recipe retrieval. Specifically, the representations are biased to capture the dominant visual elements, resulting in difficulty in ranking similar recipes with subtle differences in use of ingredients and cooking methods. …

Predictors Of Outpatient Follow-Up Attendance And Subsequent Psychiatric Readmission, Sandra J. Beltran Oct 2025

Predictors Of Outpatient Follow-Up Attendance And Subsequent Psychiatric Readmission, Sandra J. Beltran

Theses and Dissertations

Psychiatric readmissions remain a persistent challenge in mental health care, often reflecting gaps in continuity of treatment following discharge. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (2019) indicated that a key component in preventing inpatient readmission is adequate outpatient care following discharge. Moreover, early attendance in outpatient follow-up visits is associated with improved patient outcomes (Boston Medical Center, 2022). Various predictors are associated with engagement in outpatient services, such as age, medication compliance, and socioeconomic variables (Carson et al., 2014; Li et al., 2005; Marino et al., 2016; Stubbs et al., 2024).

The present study sought to determine whether psychiatric …

Parent Perspectives On Contemporary Adolescent Concerns, Allyson Worthy Oct 2025

Parent Perspectives On Contemporary Adolescent Concerns, Allyson Worthy

Theses and Dissertations

Adolescence is a critical developmental period that marks the transition between childhood and adulthood. Psychopathology is known to emerge during this time, in which many internalizing and externalizing disorders have their onset. The assessment of adolescent psychopathology involves use of questionnaire measures to obtain perspectives from the adolescent themselves, their parents, and their teachers. Parents have been found to be especially important informants of adolescent functioning. With new challenges that arise for present-day adolescents (e.g., social media use), parents can provide insight into the different areas that need to be evaluated when assessing domains of contemporary adolescents’ development and psychopathology. …

The Science Of Sound: Studying The Cognitive, Emotional, And Physiological Effects Of Frequency, Genre, And Music, Jett Yarborough

Senior Honors Theses

Music influences emotion, physiology, and cognition, yet little is known about how the frequency it is tuned to affects these influences. Prior research has shown that music tuned to 432 Hz can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve sleep. My colleagues and I conducted two studies to investigate this. Our research found that music tuned to 432 Hz promotes a significant increase in memory retention and induces a state of focus and relaxation. These results suggest that shifting from the standard tuning frequency of 440 Hz to 432 Hz could have a profoundly positive impact on our daily lives. …

From Altamont To Astroworld: An Analysis Of Management Issues In Large Scale Music Festivals, Jennifer Morriss

Honors College Theses

The most common problems in music festivals can largely be broken into two categories: risks to the individual and risks on a grand scale. It is the responsibility of event managers to consider how to best keep everyone safe and maintain proper organization. Risks to the individual are often things like substance use and abuse, harm reduction, and sexual assault or harassment. Meanwhile, broad risks tend to be issues of evacuation and emergency management, crowd safety, stampedes, and casualties or violence. It is crucial to reflect on prior common safety and security issues when setting out to produce a large …

Common Law Notice-And-Takedown, Michael Goodyear

Articles & Chapters

Platform liability is a complex landscape under U.S. law. The immunity for users’ torts provided by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act has understandably garnered the most attention. In addition, many intellectual property law scholars have also examined the requirements of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”), which provides safe harbors for users’ copyright infringements. The DMCA enumerates a long series of requirements that online platforms must satisfy to be immunized for their users’ infringements, including a notice-and-takedown regime, a repeat infringer policy, and a prohibition on having the right and ability to control and a direct financial benefit. …

Lights, Camera, Action! Mapping Concentration, Wealth, And Stability In Nyc Film Production, Mariah Szabo

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

This project is a comprehensive analysis of over 93,000 New York City film permits from 2012-2025. A geographic analysis reveals that filming activity is concentrated in a small number of neighborhoods, although slight differences are visible based on the type of media being filmed. This geographic pattern has remained stable over the 13 years studied, despite major disruptions like COVID-19 and the streaming boom. Notably, a joint analysis with a New York City household income dataset shows that these neighborhoods stand as wealthier than the average New York City neighborhood. The result is an “NYC on Film” that represents only …
