Decadal Changes In Ground-Layer Plant Communities Reflect Maple Dieback And Earthworm Invasion In National Forests In The Lake Superior Region, Usa, Tara Bal, Manuel Eduardo Anderson, Mattison E. Brady, Julia I. Burton, Christopher R. Webster
Michigan Tech Publications
Northern hardwood forests of the Lake Superior region face a series of novel disturbance pressures including canopy dieback. Previous studies have linked regional sugar-maple (Acer saccharum) canopy dieback to introduced earthworms, which may have coinciding impacts on the ground-layer plant community. Dieback–earthworm interactions may lead to important longer-term changes in forest structure and function, but these relationships but have not been characterized. We sampled ground-layer plant communities in five national forest units in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in 2010, and again just over a decade later in 2021. Non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination and indicator species analysis were used to assess …

China’S Turn To Domestic-Led Growth: Replacing Consumption Taxes With Land Taxes?, Yilin Hou, Michael Kumhof, Lei Shao
China’S Turn To Domestic-Led Growth: Replacing Consumption Taxes With Land Taxes?, Yilin Hou, Michael Kumhof, Lei Shao
Center for Policy Research
As part of its turn towards domestic-led growth China plans to stimulate consumption, including through a reduction in consumption taxes. We compare two model-based scenarios in which the revenue losses from lower consumption taxes are replaced by higher income taxes or higher land taxes. The model is carefully calibrated to recent Chinese data, including detailed fiscal data. We find that higher income taxes lead to significant losses in output and incomes, while higher land taxes lead to significant gains. These gains are increasing in the share of land in net wealth, a statistic for which better data would be invaluable.

Reverberations Of 2020: The Role Of The U.S. Racial Reckoning On Multicultural Engagement In Counseling, Dr. Donya D. Wallace, Dr. Teceta Tormala, Dr. Shreya Vaishnav, Wen Guo
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
The racial reckoning of 2020 and 2021 had profound effects on people. This study uses a retrospective design to examine differences in critical consciousness prior to 2020 and contemporarily among counseling students and professionals and whether critical consciousness predicts multicultural competence. Participants reported their current level of multicultural competence, and pre-2020 (retrospective) and current (contemporary) levels of critical reflection, critical motivation, critical action, and race-based critical consciousness. Participants reported higher levels on the contemporary critical consciousness measures than their retrospective assessments, suggesting that the high-impact events of 2020 raised their critical consciousness. There was no relationship between the critical consciousness …
Mortal Writing: Toward Braver Concepts Of “Better Writers,” Peerness, And Nationality, Enrique Paz, Annalee Roustio
Mortal Writing: Toward Braver Concepts Of “Better Writers,” Peerness, And Nationality, Enrique Paz, Annalee Roustio
The Writing Center Journal
Reflecting on experiences with two Afghan students writing in response to events following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, this essay challenges traditional writing center practices in response to the evolving and urgent writing needs of diverse (international) student populations. Focusing on the intersectional identities of student writers and the geopolitical realities they face, we develop further the call to transform writing centers into “brave spaces.” Deploying this framework of bravery, we call for a reevaluation of the concept of “better writers,” of empathy constructed primarily through peerness, and of the current conceptualization of nationality in writing center scholarship. …

Life at Stake in Technology: A Theological-Ethical Approach to Procreative Responsibility
In an age when artificial intelligence and genetic engineering shape life's origins, human procreation stands at a decisive threshold. This article offers theological and ethical reflection on human agency before technological power. Beyond biomedical concerns, it examines how digitization unsettles freedom, dignity, and divine providence. Drawing upon Catholic tradition—from Augustine to John Paul II—it proposes renewed theology of co-creation, wherein human creativity becomes participation in life-giving. Through Imago Dei and moral discernment, it contends that progress must serve life, not fabricate it. Christological ethics can guide reproductive technologies toward …
Voices Of Emergency Department Nurses And Their Experiences Of Workplace Violence, Emily M. Holland, Elizabeth B. Dowdell
Voices Of Emergency Department Nurses And Their Experiences Of Workplace Violence, Emily M. Holland, Elizabeth B. Dowdell
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Background: Nurses in many healthcare facilities frequently feel unsafe and threatened due to workplace violence (WPV) which is a serious and persistent problem across the United States, (American Nurses Association, 2015; Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). While all nurses are at risk for experiencing WPV, the emergency department (ED) is considered an especially high risk unit due to factors such as the acuity of illness, traumatic events, victims of violence, and the 24/7/365 days open door policy, (Emergency Nurses Association, 2020; Morrison & Joy, 2016). Patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) generate unique challenges for ED nurses since …

Patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with loss of the tumor suppressor gene STK11 are resistant to immune checkpoint therapies like anti–PD-1. In this study, we conducted an in vivo CRISPR screen that identified histone deacetylase 1 as a target to reverse anti–PD-1 resistance driven by loss of STK11 and developed TNG260, a potent small-molecule inhibitor of the CoREST complex with selectivity exceeding previously generated inhibitors in this class in preclinical studies. Treatment with TNG260 led to increased expression of immunomodulatory genes in STK11-deficient cancer cells. When combined with anti–PD-1, TNG260 induced immune-mediated stasis and/or regression in STK11 …
Against Settlement In Transnational Business And Human Rights Litigation, Hassan M. Ahmad
Against Settlement In Transnational Business And Human Rights Litigation, Hassan M. Ahmad
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
In “Against Settlement,” Owen Fiss argued that settlement may not always be the optimal result of civil suits, particularly those that involve novel or ambiguous areas of law or ostensible power imbalances. That work spurred a range of scholarship around the merits and demerits of settlement. And although the settlement versus litigation debate is now almost four decades old, its currency persists in common law systems in which courts are, at times, called upon to expand or even re-envision doctrines or procedural rules. This article revisits that debate. It applies “Against Settlement” to transnational business and human rights litigation that …
Libel Via Language Models, Peter Wills
Libel Via Language Models, Peter Wills
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article explains how developers and users of large language models (LMs) may be treated by English and Canadian libel law. LMs could be economically significant, and the liability environment they exist in will affect where they are developed, who accumulates wealth from their development, and who bears the burdens of any negative consequences of their development. Understanding the existing liability environment allows both developers and policy makers to make informed decisions—about which jurisdiction to offer services and what to prioritise, for the former, and about whether the existing law serves desired policy ends, for the latter. LMs also raise …
The Law Of Racial Profiling, Terry Skolnik, Jeanne Mayrand-Thibert, Fernando Belton
The Law Of Racial Profiling, Terry Skolnik, Jeanne Mayrand-Thibert, Fernando Belton
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Racial profiling is one of the most enduring problems in policing. Yet it remains largely under-theorized, which generates important theoretical and practical implications. Racial profiling tends to be construed as an arbitrary detention rather than a form of unconstitutional discrimination. For this reason, the section 15 Charter right to equality plays little to no role in most leading cases on racial profiling. The legal framework that governs racial profiling lacks clarity and can be applied inconsistently. And the remedial landscape associated with racial profiling claims has evolved minimally. This article advances a novel approach to racial profiling that addresses these …

“It Would Literally Take The World To End For Us To Do This”: Writing Center Consultants’ Affective Responses To Consulting Modalities, Anita Long, Destiny R. Brugman
The Writing Center Journal
This article discusses findings from semi-structured interviews with writing consultants about their affective experiences working across three different consulting modalities: in person, asynchronous, and synchronous. This study offers affect as a lens for understanding consultants’ responses to and strategies for consulting in multiple modalities and argues that by attending to affect, emotion, and disposition in consulting we can better support our consultants when they’re consulting in different modalities.
Reckoning With Queer History: The Canadian “Lgbt Purge” Case And The Limits Of Forgiveness, Daniel Del Gobbo
Reckoning With Queer History: The Canadian “Lgbt Purge” Case And The Limits Of Forgiveness, Daniel Del Gobbo
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The Canadian government has a long history of regulation, exploitation, and violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and two-spirit (LGBTQ2S+) people. One of the most painful chapters in this history is the “LGBT Purge,” a term that refers to the expulsion of LGBTQ2S+ service members and employees from the Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Federal Public Service between 1955 and 1992. The LGBT Purge was the subject of a class action lawsuit filed in 2017 that resulted in a settlement agreement in 2018. On a parallel track to the settlement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a …

Children living with HIV (CLWH) are at high risk of colonization and infection by respiratory pathogens, though this risk can be reduced by other microbes in the upper respiratory microbiome. The impact of HIV infection on the pediatric upper respiratory microbiome is poorly understood, and we sought to address this knowledge gap by identifying associations between HIV infection and the nasopharyngeal microbiomes of Batswana children. We enrolled Batswana CLWH (< 5 years) and age- and sex-matched HIV-exposed, uninfected and HIV-unexposed, uninfected children in a cross-sectional study. We used shotgun metagenomic sequencing to compare nasopharyngeal microbiomes by HIV status. Among the 143 children in this study, HIV and HIV-associated immunosuppression were associated with alterations in nasopharyngeal microbiome composition, including lower abundances of Corynebacterium species associated with resistance to bacterial pathogen colonization. These findings suggest that the upper respiratory microbiome may contribute to the high risk of respiratory infections among CLWH.

Treating Low-Concentration Methane Emissions Via A Methanotroph-Based Biotrickling Filter: Techno-Economic And Life Cycle Assessment, Waaseyaaban Landgren, Robert Handler, David Shonnard, Mary E. Lidstrom
Michigan Tech Publications
Methane, a greenhouse gas which has a global warming potential 80 times greater than carbon dioxide on a 20-year time scale, greatly contributes to global warming. Removing 1 Gt of atmospheric methane by 2050 would limit global temperature increase from reaching 1.5 °C. Currently, biotrickling filter systems for removing atmospheric methane via methanotrophs exist, but not for very low methane concentrations (< 1 v%). Recent work at the University of Washington to isolate and improve a microbial strain which thrives at 500 ppmv CH4 has removed one obstacle in making this technology feasible. In this study, techno-economic and environmental life cycle assessment analyses conducted on this process have assessed its economic feasibility, greenhouse gas reduction potential, and possible areas of improvement. Study results show that at 500 ppmv CH4, this process could remove atmospheric methane at a cost of USD 3992–5224/tCH4. The best-performing case also produces annual net reductions in warming potential by 276–311 tCO2e/120 m3 process unit deployed. Many opportunities exist to improve the outcomes of the baseline analysis even further, especially related to reducing the transport distance of media and harvested biomass.

Purpose: Purine metabolism is a promising therapeutic target in cancer; however, how cancer cells respond to purine shortage, particularly their adaptation and vulnerabilities, remains unclear.
Experimental design: Using the recently developed purine shortage-inducing prodrug DRP-104 and genetic approaches, we investigated the responses in prostate, lung, and glioma cancer models.
Results: We demonstrate that when de novo purine biosynthesis is compromised, cancer cells employ microtubules to assemble purinosomes, multiprotein complexes of de novo purine biosynthesis enzymes that enhance purine biosynthesis efficiency. Although this process enables tumor cells to adapt to purine shortage stress, it also renders them more susceptible to the …

This paper describes an Inclusive Employability initiative at Edith Cowan University (ECU) developed in 2024. The paper foregrounds the observations and reflections of Inclusive Employability Officers as they designed, developed and implemented the initiatives within the context of an Australian University. Over the past two decades Australian Universities have encouraged wider participation in higher education, though the resulting social mobility and economic benefit of higher education has not been evenly distributed, especially amongst cohorts with different socio-economic backgrounds and access requirements. The goal of the Inclusive Employability initiative was, and is, to support students from different equity cohorts, including people …
