Chromatin Profiling Identifies Putative Dual Roles For H3k27me3 In Regulating Cell Type-Specific Genes And Transposable Elements In Choanoflagellates, James M Gahan, Lily W Helfrich, Laura A Wetzel, Natarajan V Bhanu, Zuo-Fei Yuan, Benjamin A Garcia, Robert J Klose, Alex De Mendoza, David S Booth

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Chromatin-based mechanisms contribute to the exquisite regulation of gene expression during animal development. But how those mechanisms evolved remains elusive. Here we investigate chromatin regulatory features in the closest relatives of animals, choanoflagellates. In a model choanoflagellate Salpingoeca rosetta, we compare chromatin accessibility and histone modifications to gene expression. Accessible genomic regions in S. rosetta primarily correspond to gene promoters, and we find no evidence of distal gene regulatory elements that resemble enhancers deployed to regulate developmental genes in animals. Remarkably, the histone modification H3K27me3 decorates genes with cell type-specific expression, revealing a functional similarity in S. rosetta and animals. …

Reply To The ‘Comment On “Why There Is No Evidence That Pyridine Killed The English Crabs”’, Alex Ford, Mark Fitzsimons, Crispin Halsall Oct 2025

Reply To The ‘Comment On “Why There Is No Evidence That Pyridine Killed The English Crabs”’, Alex Ford, Mark Fitzsimons, Crispin Halsall

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

We highlight that the commentary by Peters which uses a CREED/CRED risk assessment framework supports the previous government reports that rejected the pyridine hypothesis and considers the previous evidence as unreliable. This reaffirms our conclusions that pyridine didn't kill the Teesside crabs.

Background: The rising prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), particularly among pediatric populations, requires identification of modifiable risk factors to control disease progression. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have emerged as potential contributors to liver damage; however, their role in MASLD remains underexplored. This study aimed to develop a translational framework integrating human and in vitro data to elucidate the effect of PFAS on MASLD development.

Methods: We measured PFAS plasma levels in the Teen-LABS cohort (n = 136), comprising adolescents with obesity (mean age = 16.8 years) undergoing bariatric surgery. Plasma samples were also analyzed using proteomic …

Nasal colonization by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae is associated with an increased risk of infection by these pathobionts, whereas nasal colonization by Dolosigranulum species is associated with health. Human nasal epithelial organoids (HNOs) differentiated at air-liquid interface (ALI) physiologically recapitulate human nasal respiratory epithelium with a robust mucociliary blanket. Due to their natural stem-like properties, HNO lines are a long-term experimental resource that offers genetic diversity based on the different donors. To develop HNOs as a new model system for bacterial nasal colonization, we reproducibly monocolonized HNOs differentiated at ALI with S. aureus, S. pneumoniae, or Dolosigranulum …

Drivers Of Policy Support And Political Consumerism Behavior Among Water Recreationists, Mina Kim Oct 2025

Drivers Of Policy Support And Political Consumerism Behavior Among Water Recreationists, Mina Kim

Proceedings of the Recreation Experience Community Network Research Symposium

Individuals who engage in water-based recreation share a distinct bond with water quality due to their direct contact with aquatic environments during leisure activities. Increasing concerns about water quality have led to a rise in research exploring how environmental conditions and perceived risks shape environmental attitudes and conservation actions. However, it remains uncertain whether water recreationists extend their conservation efforts beyond those directly tied to their activities. To explore this issue, the present study investigates whether water-based recreationists in South Carolina support more stringent water management policies and engage in political consumerism behaviors, such as boycotting and buycotting. Data were …

Darkling Beetle, Jasmine M. Roncevic Oct 2025

Darkling Beetle, Jasmine M. Roncevic

PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas

Darkling beetles (Tenebrio molitor) are holometabolic insects. Darkling beetle is the common name of the large family of beetles Tenebrionidae which has more than 20,000 species. The T. molitor species gets its name from the yellowish appearance of the larvae. During its lifespan, a darkling beetle experiences a complete metamorphosis in four distinct stages: Egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The eggs hatch within 4 to 19 days after the female oviposits. It takes about 3 – 4 months for an egg to develop into an adult, or the beetle stage.

During the adult stage, the beetles are initially whitish and …

Horseshoe Crabs, Jessie M. Roncevic Oct 2025

Horseshoe Crabs, Jessie M. Roncevic

PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas

Horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) are fascinating animals known as “living fossils.” Older than dinosaurs, horseshoe crabs are arthropods, closely related to spiders and scorpions. Many shorebirds, including red knot, depend on the eggs of horseshoe crabs during migration. Horseshoe crabs are captured and bled alive for their blue blood. Rich in limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), their blood is used for the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) test, which is used worldwide to detect bacterial toxins in pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Horseshoe crabs have an intricate anatomy, so I spent a lot of time researching it before I started drawing them. When …

Comparative Development Of Indonesia And Nigeria In The First Two Decades Of Democracy: Divergence Or Convergence?, Adamu Waziri Babagana Oct 2025

Comparative Development Of Indonesia And Nigeria In The First Two Decades Of Democracy: Divergence Or Convergence?, Adamu Waziri Babagana

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Studi Pembangunan

Indonesia and Nigeria are considered suitable candidates for comparative analysis because of their similarities in natural endowments and geographical attributes, demography, economic structure, sociocultural diversity, and political history. Indonesia began to achieve rapid growth in the 1980s while Nigeria did not. During that period, economic policies in the two countries diverged, and this led to sustained economic growth in Indonesia and prolonged economic decline in Nigeria. However, as the countries transitioned to democratic rule in 1999 following the collapse of authoritarian regimes, some aspects of their political and economic trajectories revealed a trend towards convergence. Using the descriptive comparison of …

Tracing Textual Discontinuity In Wang Guowei's Criticism On A Dream Of Red Mansions, Wei Si

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Wang Guowei's Criticism on A Dream of Red Mansions is acclaimed as a groundbreaking work in the history of Chinese literary criticism for its “organized and systematic” approach. However, a notable textual discontinuity exists between the Chapter III and IV, revealing ideological shifts and editorial interventions by Wang himself. He openly acknowledged that Chapter IV abandoned Schopenhauer's theory of the will, which formed the philosophical foundation of Chapter III. A close examination of Wang’ s editorial practices as the chief editor of World of Education revealed a striking anomaly: while articles marked with “to be printed in the next issue” …

Literature Dies In The Digital: Friedrich Kittler On Literature As Medium, Na Jiang Oct 2025

Literature Dies In The Digital: Friedrich Kittler On Literature As Medium, Na Jiang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Friedrich Kittler, one of the theoretical pioneers of the “media materialism” paradigm, views literature as a medium and thereby analyzes its material basis and technological features. From the writing practices of the print era to modern literature in the age of analog technology, shifts in technological media have disrupted literary history, resulting in the death of literature in the age of computers. Kittler's media materialist approach to literature emphasizes the external hardware conditions that define literature as a medium and offers a new technological perspective for reviewing literary development. This innovative approach has transformed the framework of literary studies and …
