Voice And Student Engagement With Writing: Integrating Perspective, Personality, And Style, Sara S. Martin Jan 2026

Voice And Student Engagement With Writing: Integrating Perspective, Personality, And Style, Sara S. Martin

English Dissertations

The rise of generative AI has many teachers worried about the future of writing classes and students’ desire to learn. However, instructors can motivate students to write by valuing what AI can never replace: their voices. Previous definitions of voice took the concept for granted and left it either vague or reductive, unhelpful for structured lessons. I propose a new, more teachable definition of voice as perspective, personality, and style. Perspective takes priority because it belongs solely to the individual and the unrepeatable moment of composition. Personality infuses passages with emotion, forming a bond between author and reader. Style, the …

Enhancing The Performance Of Disk-Based Key-Value Stores: From Learned Index Acceleration To I/O-Efficient Hybrid Caching, Sujit Maharjan Jan 2026

Enhancing The Performance Of Disk-Based Key-Value Stores: From Learned Index Acceleration To I/O-Efficient Hybrid Caching, Sujit Maharjan

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The exponential growth of data in modern computing environments has rendered the efficient extraction of information from massive datasets a critical systemic requirement. Key-value (KV) storage systems serve as the backbone for these operations; however, their performance is consistently bottlenecked by two primary functional requirements: identifying the data's location and managing the physical cost of accessing the storage device. Data locations are typically identified via an index, while disk I/O is minimized through caching. This dissertation presents LearnedStore, TurboIndex, and ReadBooster, which break these performance bottlenecks by introducing architectural modifications to the index and cache. LearnedStore accelerates operations by adapting …

How Gender Differences Influence The Presentation, Diagnosis, And Lived Experience Of Females With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Casey A. Vanyo Jan 2026

How Gender Differences Influence The Presentation, Diagnosis, And Lived Experience Of Females With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Casey A. Vanyo

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition with a highly variable presentation influenced by gender. Historically, autism research has focused primarily on males, contributing to the under recognition and misdiagnosis of girls, women, and gender-diverse individuals. Women engage in camouflaging behaviors to align with social expectations, which can mask autistic traits and contribute to higher levels of anxiety, depression, and emotional exhaustion. This thesis examines how gender shapes the presentation, diagnosis, and lived experiences of autistic females. It explores differences in diagnostic practices, mental health outcomes, and access to support. Findings suggest that current frameworks often fail to capture …

Assigning Library E-Books As Textbooks: An Examination Of Collection Development Policies And User Education Practices At Minority-Serving Institutions, Michelle Ehrenpreis

Publications and Research

Assigning library e-books as course textbooks can help to alleviate the financial burden of college for many students. Accordingly, libraries include e-books in their collection development policies and strive to educate users on the availability of these texts via the use of library research guides. Previous studies discuss library collection strategies and intentions to use e-books as textbooks, but do not discuss continuous or permanent plans. This study examined library policies at Hispanic Service Institutions (HSI’s) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) to evaluate how these libraries approach and document their acquisitions of library e-books. Research guides at the …

Techno-Optimism In Innovation Law And Policy, Peter Lee Jan 2026

Techno-Optimism In Innovation Law And Policy, Peter Lee

Emory Law Journal

This Article examines an underappreciated bias that has long pervaded U.S. legal culture: an exceedingly enthusiastic view of technology and technological progress. It adopts the term “techno-optimism” to describe an asymmetrically positive view of innovation that extols its benefits, minimizes its harms, and elides much of its complexity. The recent rise of more skeptical attitudes toward technology only casts into sharper relief the techno-optimism that has subtly dominated policy debates for decades. As a case study of techno-optimism, this Article scrutinizes patent law, particularly its constitutionally defined objective of promoting technological progress. In so doing, it offers the first extended …

When Machines Collude: Rebooting Antitrust Law For The Age Of Algorithmic Markets, William K. Knight Jan 2026

When Machines Collude: Rebooting Antitrust Law For The Age Of Algorithmic Markets, William K. Knight

Emory Law Journal

Increasingly, our lives are being dominated by algorithms. From social media feeds to credit scoring, algorithms play a major role in our day-to-day lives, whether we recognize it or not. An emerging issue in the modern technology landscape is the potential for algorithms to cause anticompetitive harm to free markets. As pricing algorithms become more advanced and more widespread, they could facilitate collusive arrangements in a manner that bypasses antitrust laws, thereby adversely impacting consumers through higher prices. American competition law, primarily governed by the Sherman Antitrust Act, suffers from glaring deficiencies and ambiguities that remain unresolved, leaving it manifestly …

Addiction To Constitutionally Protected Activity: Speech, Press, And Religion, Eugene Volokh Jan 2026

Addiction To Constitutionally Protected Activity: Speech, Press, And Religion, Eugene Volokh

Emory Law Journal

Recent statutes and lawsuits have sought to restrict social media or video game design practices that supposedly cause some users to become “addicted.” Are such restrictions consistent with the First Amendment?

This Article begins by asking what would happen if the same arguments were applied to religious practices (whether or not the arguments’ supporters would seek to so apply them). Say some religious practice was viewed as causing emotional or financial harm—e.g., by leading some adherents to feel guilty about their sexuality, to distance themselves from family members, or to give substantial portions of their assets to the religious organization. …

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The expansion of adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based therapeutics has increased the demand for efficient clarification. In this study, a functionalized deconstructed depth filtration platform was developed to dissect how membrane–virus charge, modulated by pH, influences separation. Three charge regimes, positive (pH 4), neutral (pH 6), and negative (pH 8) between the membranes and AAVs, were examined. The flat-sheet system, composed of sequential 1.2, 0.8, 0.45, and 0.1 µm membranes, enabled the first layer-by-layer analysis of depth filtration behavior. This revealed that Stage 1 and Stage 4 dominate clarification. Remarkably, substantial DNA capture (> 75%) was observed even in the largest-pore stage, …

Understanding Workplace Psychological Safety Among Latina Professionals: An Exploration Of Intersectional Experiences, Michal Tapia

Theses and Dissertations

Latina professionals represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the U.S. workforce, yet they remain disproportionately underrepresented in executive and C-suite roles. This disparity reflects structural conditions that shape access to voice, support, advancement, and decision-making authority.

This mixed-methods study examined psychological safety among 145 Latina professionals across the United States, defined as the belief that one can speak up, ask for help, disagree, or raise concerns without fear of negative consequences (Edmondson, 1999, 2019). The study explored how identity, relationships, leadership, workplace support, inclusion, mentorship, and structural barriers shape psychological safety at work.

Quantitative analyses showed that workplace support …
