Maslow’S Hammer: The Problem Of Scientism And The Philosophy Of Science In Maslow’S Later Work, Richard Grego
Maslow’S Hammer: The Problem Of Scientism And The Philosophy Of Science In Maslow’S Later Work, Richard Grego
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
This paper examines how Abraham Maslow’s concern with the pervasive intellectual and cultural influence of scientism shaped his philosophy of science and anticipated contemporary discourse on the nature of scientism. Although he never articulated a thorough, formal, or systematic philosophy of science, Maslow’s conception of science’s nature and scope is evident through the course of his work, and it was shaped by his concern with the emerging influence of scientism. The prominent intellectual status science has enjoyed since the Enlightenment has made scientism a powerful influence on postmodern intellectual and popular culture that is currently the subject of a wide …
Sociolinguistic Challenges To The Academic Inclusion Of Latin American Immigrants Of Legal Age And Spanish In High Schools In Minnesota: A Qualitative Study On The Learning Of English As A Second Language, Geanella Margarita Ochoa Veloz
Sociolinguistic Challenges To The Academic Inclusion Of Latin American Immigrants Of Legal Age And Spanish In High Schools In Minnesota: A Qualitative Study On The Learning Of English As A Second Language, Geanella Margarita Ochoa Veloz
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This research analyzes and exposes the experiences of Latin American adult migrants who, having recently arrived in the United States, have resumed their studies in high schools in the State of Minnesota as a strategy to learn the English language by immersion. The study was based on the contributions of the sociology of migration and the sociology of education, which, incorporating as a methodological strategy “the case study” combined with “the life story”, managed to collect and share reflections regarding the barriers faced by migrants during the process of adaptation and insertion into American society, thus adopting a critical approach. …
Information Law Pluralism, Hannah Bloch-Wehba
Information Law Pluralism, Hannah Bloch-Wehba
Faculty Scholarship
Information-intensive activities are reshaping political, social, and economic institutions. As they respond to these shifts, legislators and regulators are embracing information as a regulatory device for tech. Far from limiting themselves to public disclosure, consumer notice, and other traditional mechanisms of fostering transparency and information flows, however, legislators are using other, more nuanced tools to incentivize regulated entities to obtain, generate, and share information.
This Article maps the landscape of the emerging information-based regimes for regulating tech and assesses their conceptual and practical implications. It canvasses an extensive set of recently enacted laws regulating the information economy and shows that, …
Equal Justice & Generative Ai, Milan R. Markovic
Equal Justice & Generative Ai, Milan R. Markovic
Faculty Scholarship
The United States has long suffered from unequal access to justice, with countless low-and middle-income Americans forced to navigate the legal system alone. Recently, prominent judges, lawyers, and scholars have seized on generative AI as a potential corrective. These techno-optimists maintain that ChatGPT and other large language models can demystify the law and address unmet legal needs. Chief Justice John Roberts has proclaimed that AI-based tools "have the welcome potential to smooth out any mismatch between available resources and urgent needs in our court system."
Although AI will be an increasingly important source of legal assistance for underserved populations, the …
Exploit Machina, Andrea Matwyshyn
Exploit Machina, Andrea Matwyshyn

Over half a century ago, Hannah Arendt cautioned us to “think what we are doing” when we build new technologies. Engaging with her counsel and a set of historical case studies, this Article frames what it calls exploit machina problems. Exploit machina refers to situations where broken technologies and broken governance combine to irreparably harm the public. In other words, exploit machina involves organizational choices to knowingly leverage technology as part of legally problematic conduct, including various forms of fraud. In the language of data science, exploit machina situations implicate strategic decisions in building and managing artificial intelligence (AI); they …

Competitive Balance And The Price Of Winning, Dominic Rolla
Competitive Balance And The Price Of Winning, Dominic Rolla
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis looks at whether Major League Baseball’s two main competitive balance policies — revenue sharing, which started in 1997, and the Competitive Balance Tax (CBT), introduced in 2002 — have made the league more competitive. Using data on all 30 MLB franchises from 1997 through 2025, along with an extended league-level dataset going back to 1990, I run five regression models to test whether these policies improved competitive balance, whether the CBT changed the relationship between payroll and wins, whether team success became less persistent over time, whether winning drives franchise revenue, and whether payroll helps predict World Series …
David Vs. The Propaganda Machine: Péter Magyar And The Disruption Of Hungary’S Media Capture, Carrick G. Mollenkamp
David Vs. The Propaganda Machine: Péter Magyar And The Disruption Of Hungary’S Media Capture, Carrick G. Mollenkamp
CMC Senior Theses
The durability of competitive authoritarian regimes is often derived from media capture, a sophisticated system in which media institutions are structured to favor incumbent actors. Viktor Orbán’s Hungary serves as a quintessential example. For more than a decade, opposition actors were systematically denied meaningful access to the electorate, enabling Orbán to maintain his grip on power through consecutive elections. But that durability did not last. Drawing on Marius Dragomir’s media capture model and Steven Levitsky and Lucan Way’s framework of hybrid regimes, this thesis argues Péter Magyar’s landslide victory in the 2026 Hungarian parliamentary election exposed three vulnerabilities of media …
Pillpetz: A Smarter Way To Encourage Medication Adherence In Children, John H. Begley
Pillpetz: A Smarter Way To Encourage Medication Adherence In Children, John H. Begley
CMC Senior Theses
Medication adherence is usually framed as a problem of patient behavior, but this thesis argues that it is equally a problem of design. Children who take daily medication face barriers that adults often do not: developing executive function, dependence on caregivers, shifting school and home routines, privacy concerns, and stigma around being perceived as different. The standard prescription bottle, by contrast, was designed primarily for dispensing efficiency, safety, and accidental ingestion prevention—not for sustained daily use by a developing child.
This thesis proposes PillPetz, a smart pill case and digital companion that uses routine, play, dose confirmation, and caregiver-connected support …
From Endowment To Extraction: Critical Mineral Governance And Supply-Chain Integration In The Arctic, Charles Bollwerk
From Endowment To Extraction: Critical Mineral Governance And Supply-Chain Integration In The Arctic, Charles Bollwerk
CMC Senior Theses
Annexing Greenland, making Canada the 51st State – what’s it all about? Critical minerals are often treated as a geological and national security problem that can be fixed through strength and coercion. This thesis argues that, in the Arctic, governance structures are what determine whether critical mineral wealth becomes strategically useful. Through a comparative qualitative analysis of Greenland, Canada, Alaska, Russia, and the Nordic countries, it examines what drives variation in critical mineral extraction and supply-chain integration across Arctic states, an especially relevant topic as Western states seek to reduce dependence on Chinese-controlled supply chains. The analysis applies four variables …
Revenge Of The Interceptors? The Dod, Congress, And The Return Of Space-Based Missile Defense During Trump 45, Chad Mcelroy
Revenge Of The Interceptors? The Dod, Congress, And The Return Of Space-Based Missile Defense During Trump 45, Chad Mcelroy
CMC Senior Theses
The initiation of the Golden Dome for America program has brought space-based missile defense (SBMD) to the forefront of American national security policy and rekindled debates that had laid dormant since the administration of President Ronald Reagan. How, forty-two years after President Reagan first proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative, did SBMD return as a national priority? In lieu of public information about the ongoing Golden Dome initiative, this thesis explores the first Trump administration, otherwise known as Trump 45, in order to analyze the development of SBMD proposals by its proponents in Congress and the Department of Defense. I used …
Roll The End Credits: Evaluating Georgia And New Jersey’S Movie Production Incentives, Daniella Reyes
Roll The End Credits: Evaluating Georgia And New Jersey’S Movie Production Incentives, Daniella Reyes
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis argues that movie production incentives (MPIs) are high-risk policies that result in limited, and often short-lived, benefits to the state. Using case studies of Georgia and New Jersey, this research evaluates the extent to which MPIs improve film industry employment, tourism, and local economic spending. This thesis also examines the intangible consequences of film industry activity, such as road closures, traffic, and negative portrayals of the jurisdiction on film. Drawing on game theory frameworks, particularly negative-sum and Stackelberg games, the analysis shows how interjurisdictional competition for a highly mobile industry transfers resources to the film industry without delivering …
Modulating Oran Nitrate-Reducing Bacteria To Enhance Nitric Oxide Bioavailability As A Therapeutic Target For Atherosclerosis, Donovan C. Davidson
Modulating Oran Nitrate-Reducing Bacteria To Enhance Nitric Oxide Bioavailability As A Therapeutic Target For Atherosclerosis, Donovan C. Davidson
CMC Senior Theses
Atherosclerosis remains the primary driver of global cardiovascular disease, yet clinical interventions are largely restricted to high-cost, invasive procedures only after it has reached a critical stage. Recent research has identified a connection between the oral microbiome and vascular health via the enterosalivary nitrate-nitrite-nitic oxide (NO) pathway. Oral nitrate-reducing bacteria (ONRB) drive the synthesization of NO by reducing dietary nitrate into nitrite, which is then converted into bioavailable NO. NO is a potent vasodilator that maintains endothelial health by suppressing inflammation through inhibiting the expression of adhesion molecules VCAM-1 and ICAM-1. However, this pathway is easily compromised by dysbiotic oral …
No Coup, No Conscience: Coup-Proofing In The Armenian Genocide, Rachel Svoyskiy
No Coup, No Conscience: Coup-Proofing In The Armenian Genocide, Rachel Svoyskiy
CMC Senior Theses
The Armenian Genocide functioned as a form of coup-proofing under the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP). Existing scholarship emphasizes nationalism, wartime radicalization, and security dilemmas, but does not fully account for why the military complied, why dissenters were removed, or how Armenian property became tied to political loyalty. Applying Hicham Bou Nassif’s framework of coup-proofing, this study examines four tactics the CUP used to secure military obedience while carrying out mass violence. First, the regime framed Armenians as an existential threat to align the officer corps ideologically with the state. Second, it promoted the material interests of military and …
Ceo Linguistic Stress And Abnormal Stock Returns Evidence From S&P 500 Earnings Conference Calls, Yiqi Sun
Ceo Linguistic Stress And Abnormal Stock Returns Evidence From S&P 500 Earnings Conference Calls, Yiqi Sun
CMC Senior Theses
Stress is pervasive among corporate executives, yet its effect on firms' future abnormal return remains largely unexplored. This paper examines whether CEO's Linguistic stress exhibited during earnings conference calls predicts future abnormal stock returns. I provided a Large Language Model (Claude Sonnet 4.6) psychology-backed prompts to analyze CEO stress from linguistic patterns in 7491 earnings call transcripts from 470 companies in the S&P 500 during 2020-2024. I found three main results. First, the CEO linguistic stress is negatively and significantly associated with the immediate market reaction, with a one-unit increase in stress score associated with a 0.9% decrease in the …
The Vestiges Of The German Democratic Republic: Memory Politics And Xenophobia In Former East Germany, Diana Zhou
The Vestiges Of The German Democratic Republic: Memory Politics And Xenophobia In Former East Germany, Diana Zhou
CMC Senior Theses
From the 2015 migration influx onward, xenophobic and nationalist sentiments permeated Germany’s national political discourse. The former socialist territories in eastern Germany have proven particularly susceptible to far-right, anti-immigration, and anti-integration rhetoric. This thesis explores the mnemonic foundations of xenophobic sentiments in former East German states, tracing the development of an antifascist yet ethnically nationalist mnemonic framework to the state-sanctioned myths and invented traditions of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). As the loss of a collective GDR identity produced a reactionary rehabilitation of this framework post-unification, the racial and ethnic “other” — migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees — became constructed …
Eurovision As A Platform For Cultural Diplomacy In Times Of Conflict, Lucy Meza
Eurovision As A Platform For Cultural Diplomacy In Times Of Conflict, Lucy Meza
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis examines how states utilize the Eurovision Song Contest as a platform for soft power, focusing on the conditions under which cultural performance translates into reputational gains. Drawing on Joseph Nye’s concept of soft power, Biasioli’s theory of songwashing, Zamorano’s typology of cultural diplomacy, Anholt’s competitive identity framework, and Feklyunina’s analysis of identity and narrative, it argues that Eurovision’s effectiveness as a soft power platform is fundamentally contingent on the alignment between a state’s cultural narrative and dominant international perceptions of its legitimacy. Through a qualitative comparative case study approach, the thesis examines two nations whose Eurovision participation during …

Collective Labour Dispute Resolution In Vietnam: The Evolution Of Rules And Institutions And Workers’ Strategic Deployment Of State Regulation, Trang T.K. Tran
Collective Labour Dispute Resolution In Vietnam: The Evolution Of Rules And Institutions And Workers’ Strategic Deployment Of State Regulation, Trang T.K. Tran
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
While Vietnam has established a legal system for labour disputes that largely mirrors those in developed countries, empirical evidence reveals these formal mechanisms are rarely, if ever, used to resolve collective disputes. The persistent failures of the formal mechanisms have, paradoxically, created an environment where workers and trade unions have developed innovative, informal strategies to leverage the state’s legal framework. Workers in Vietnam mobilize around the very existence of labour laws to exert pressure on employers and state institutions to intervene on their behalf, even if not directly following each labour laws’ procedure. This strategic deployment of state regulation, often …
The Problem Of Digital Trade Regulation: Silences Regarding Labour And Their Potential Disruption By A Sustainability Agenda, Tonia Novitz
The Problem Of Digital Trade Regulation: Silences Regarding Labour And Their Potential Disruption By A Sustainability Agenda, Tonia Novitz
Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal
The growing impact of digital trade on work in global supply chains is readily detectable but there are curious regulatory silences on labour-related issues. The key problem identified in digital trade law is national obstruction to the free flow of data needed to promote online ordering and delivery of goods and services. In comparison, the concerns of those whose work is constitutive of digital trade, such as platform workers, are largely overlooked. Arguably, provisions often found in trade agreements relating to digital privacy and the effects of algorithmic management could be utilised by those at work. However, there remain uncertainties …
A Conceptual Map Of The Right To Repair: Where Upcycling Fits In, Anthony D. Rosborough
A Conceptual Map Of The Right To Repair: Where Upcycling Fits In, Anthony D. Rosborough
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
The chapter maps contemporary approaches to the Right to Repair along a spectrum from decentralised freedoms to centralised standard setting and product design. Decentralised approaches propose a Right to Repair that resembles a 'negative right' in that it protects user autonomy through dismantling legal and market barriers. Centralised repairability models, on the other hand, align more with a positive right that is built through stringent product design standards, obligations on manufacturers to repair products directly, and situate repair within larger circular economy governance models.
Using the US and EU approaches to Right to Repair policy as illustrative poles, the chapter …

Desperately Seeking Non-Judgmental Supports: Young People’S Perceptions Of Adult Responses To Technology-Facilitated Harms, Alexa Dodge, Kaitlynn Mendes, Christopher Dietzel, Suzie Dunn
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Young people around the world are increasingly impacted by technologyfacilitated harms, yet research shows that teens often do not seek help from adults in their lives to deal with these harms. This article draws data from 25 focus groups with 146 young Canadians (aged 13–18) as they explain why they are reluctant to seek adult help when experiencing technologyfacilitated harms. Young Canadians consistently said that adults speak to them in ways that are judgmental, emotionally reactive, and disempowering. To make them more likely to seek help from adults, young people want adults to avoid scare tactic approaches, listen to their …

Help-Seeking For Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence: Insights From Canadian Young Adults Across Three Forms Of Harm, Jennifer L. Mcarthur, Anita M. Aucoin, Kayla J. Goruk, Julie Blais, Alexa Dodge, Suzie Dunn
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Technology-facilitated sexual violence (TFSV) encompasses a range of harmful digital sexual behaviors, each with unique characteristics and potential impacts on victim-survivors, as well as varying responses from support systems. To address this growing issue, it is necessary to understand the help-seeking behaviors of those affected by the different types of TFSV and the unique barriers they encounter. This study draws on interview (n = 17) and survey (n = 468) data from adults in Canada to compare the help-seeking behaviors and barriers across image-based sexual abuse, image-based sexual harassment, and sexual-, gender-, and sexuality-based harassment. Qualitative findings suggested …
Statutory Immunity Of The Attorney General From Law Society Discipline In Alberta: A Comment In Justice Statutes Amendment Act, 2025, Andrew Flavelle Martin
Statutory Immunity Of The Attorney General From Law Society Discipline In Alberta: A Comment In Justice Statutes Amendment Act, 2025, Andrew Flavelle Martin
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
In December 2025, Alberta became the second Canadian province to grant its Attorney General statutory immunity from law society discipline. This comment analyzes this amendment to the Legal Profession Act and the rationales and critiques that emerged during the legislative process. It argues that, while some of the critiques were misplaced, the rationales given by the government are problematic in themselves and insufficient to justify the tension between the immunity of the Attorney General to law society discipline and the constitutional principle of the rule of law. In the absence of a more clearly articulated and justified rationale for adopting …

Natural disasters pose recurring threats to human life and infrastructure, demanding intelligent systems that can process heterogeneous data streams and provide actionable insights in real time. Existing approaches often treat textual signals from social media and emergency communications separately from spatial hazard attributes, limiting their effectiveness in capturing the full complexity of evolving crises. This paper proposes an AI-driven geo–textual intelligence framework that integrates disaster-related text with GIS-based hazard features for real-time risk prediction and evacuation planning. The framework employs contextual text encoders and a neural GIS encoder, fused through an attention mechanism that dynamically weights cross-modal signals. Experiments on …

Sexual assault survivors demonstrate substantial resilience, prompting calls for strength-based approaches to understanding recovery. One construct receiving increasing attention is self-compassion (i.e., treating oneself with kindness and understanding in the face of suffering), which may buffer against the negative mental health effects of assault victimization. The current systematic review synthesized data from 31 peer-reviewed studies examining self-compassion, sexual assault exposure, and mental health. Reported in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420250648494), the review included observational and experimental studies assessing sexual assault victimization and self-compassion across the lifespan. Most studies …
