Ramadan Hardcore By Hicham Habchi E Mehdi Yassire, Sarah Nesti Willard Jan 2026

Ramadan Hardcore By Hicham Habchi E Mehdi Yassire, Sarah Nesti Willard

Books and Book Chapters

This article examines Ramadan Hardcore, a graphic novel by Hicham Habchi and Mehdi Yassire, through a visual and contextual analysis. It explores how the novel’s raw illustrative style reinforces its title and narrative, creating a powerful emotional impact while presenting an authentic, and at times deliberately exaggerated, representation of reality. Using visual semiotic analysis, the study demonstrates how the artwork reflects the authors’ lived experiences and contributes to the novel’s gritty, direct atmosphere. The article also discusses the controversy surrounding the graphic novel’s provocative title, noting that although it initially attracted considerable attention, interest quickly declined and copies have …

Genocide And Politicide: The Psychology Of State Terrorism, Clark Mccauley Jan 2026

Genocide And Politicide: The Psychology Of State Terrorism, Clark Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This chapter reviews the psychologies that enable mass killing of civilians by government (politicide). A typology of perceived threats is advanced, with special attention to contamination threat and essentializing the enemy. Three groups of actors are distinguished: perpetrators, leaders, and the mass public that leaders and actors claim to represent. Predictors of genocide are considered, highlighting the importance of means and opportunity.

Fear And Coercion In Government Definitions Of Terrorism, Clark Mccauley Jan 2026

Fear And Coercion In Government Definitions Of Terrorism, Clark Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this chapter I review government definitions of terrorism to show the popularity of assuming that terrorists aim to coerce governments and their citizens through fear. Then I draw out some of the costs of this assumption for analysts of terrorism, practitioners of counterterrorism, and targets of terrorist attacks. Including fear and coercion in definitions of terrorism blinds us to the importance of terrorist aims other than coercion, of emotions other than fear, and of audiences other than terrorist victims. In particular I argue that terrorists aim to elicit anger and overreaction that will advance their cause. Ignoring this strategy …

Twelve Mechanisms Of Radicalization To Terrorism, Sophia Moskalenko, Clark Mccauley Jan 2026

Twelve Mechanisms Of Radicalization To Terrorism, Sophia Moskalenko, Clark Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Radicalization refers to changes in beliefs, feelings, and actions toward increased support for one side of an intergroup conflict. The extreme of action radicalization is political violence and terrorism. Twelve psychological mechanisms driving participation in political violence are identified.  At the individual level, motivation to engage in political violence can be based on personal grievance, political grievance, “slippery slope” participation in illegal political activity, love for already-radicalized friends and relatives, and social disconnection (”unfreezing”) that opens an individual to new ideas and new comrades.  At the group level, participation in political violence can emerge from extremity shift of like-minded group …

The Effects Of Low-Frequency, Low-Intensity Ultrasound On Gene Expression In Macrophage-Endothelial Cell Co-Culture, Evelyn Hergenhan Jan 2026

The Effects Of Low-Frequency, Low-Intensity Ultrasound On Gene Expression In Macrophage-Endothelial Cell Co-Culture, Evelyn Hergenhan

Honors Theses

Introduction

Low-frequency, low-intensity ultrasound (LFLI US) has been shown to be a promising treatment for noninvasive accelerated chronic wound healing. However, the biological mechanisms of this ultrasound-assisted healing are not yet understood, limiting clinical adoption. The objective of this study is to characterize the effects of LFLI US on gene expression in a simulated chronic wound environment to gain a better understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying this therapeutic.

Methods

A simulated chronic wound environment consisting of endothelial cells and inflammatory M1 macrophages co-cultured in 3D was subject to LFLI US at 50, 100, or 150 mW/cm2 Spatial-Peak, Temporal-Peak …

Always Green, Ever Living, Anna Plante Jan 2026

Always Green, Ever Living, Anna Plante

Honors Theses

The Creative Honors Thesis, “Always Green, Ever Living," is an experimental essay film that explores the complexities and contradictions of environmental conservation, up against the contemporary climate crisis. The film is centered on Muir Woods National Monument and follows a young girl's relationship with nature. The film reflects on how protected natural spaces are influenced by systems of funding, access, and interpretation, as well as broader environmental pressures. Using a combination of archival footage, original imagery, narration, and ambient sound, the project adopts the essayistic structure that prioritizes reflection over linear storytelling.

Genre Based Analysis Of Sustainability In Contemporary U.S. Film Production: Inception Or Illusion?, Tanner Ennis Jan 2026

Genre Based Analysis Of Sustainability In Contemporary U.S. Film Production: Inception Or Illusion?, Tanner Ennis

Interdisciplinary Studies | Senior Theses

Anthropogenic activity is actively leading to environmental degradation, highlighting the need for large industries to take responsibility for their environmental impact, particularly the film industry. While sustainable practices in the film industry such as virtual production, recycling of set construction materials, or the use of renewable energy present opportunities to improve sustainability, there is still a substantial amount of progress to be made. For example, research has demonstrated that increases in production budget correlate with higher carbon dioxide emissions, with fuel, utilities, and travel acting as the top contributors (Sustainable Entertainment Alliance, 2022). Conversation among the scholarly community is centered …

When Parenting Becomes Production: Family Vlogging, Child Labor, And The Law's Silence, Morgan Robinson Jan 2026

When Parenting Becomes Production: Family Vlogging, Child Labor, And The Law's Silence, Morgan Robinson

Florida Atlantic University Undergraduate Law Journal

The rise of family vlogging and the ability to earn revenue from the internet through monetization programs have ushered in a new era of child stars. So-called “kidfluencers” are frequently under the scrutiny of their parents, sponsors, and those watching behind a screen. These child influencers currently lack federal protections that ensure their well-being and safety. Family vlogging has been proven to place a financial, mental, and sometimes, physical burden on children involved. Federal regulations have been encouraged by experts and survivors of child internet exploitation but have not been passed. This paper will examine the impact of family vlogging …

Leadership And Creative Placemaking In Central Appalachia: Morehead, Kentucky, Toni C. Hobbs Jan 2026

Leadership And Creative Placemaking In Central Appalachia: Morehead, Kentucky, Toni C. Hobbs

Theses and Dissertations--Arts Administration

In rural Appalachia, longstanding patterns of extractive economic development, coupled with limited public investment and uneven institutional support, have contributed to persistent economic stagnation and a diminished sense of pride among residents. These conditions reflect deeper structural challenges, including economies shaped by resource extraction and external control. Addressing these conditions is critical to fostering economic growth, promoting cultural heritage, and enhancing overall well-being in the region. By cultivating resilient communities, leaders can create environments in which both the economy and local pride can thrive, contributing to a more prosperous and unified Appalachian region.

This study investigates the organizational and leadership …

Not Eu Enough: The Eu's Proposed Multilateral Investment Court As An Infeasible Replacement For The Intra-Eu Isds Mechanism After The Achmea Decision, Rohit Rakhit Jan 2026

Not Eu Enough: The Eu's Proposed Multilateral Investment Court As An Infeasible Replacement For The Intra-Eu Isds Mechanism After The Achmea Decision, Rohit Rakhit

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

In the landmark case Slovak Republic v. Achmea BV, the European Union Court of Justice (CJEU) invalidated Article 8 of the 1992 Dutch-Slovak bilateral investment treaty (BIT), holding that it conflicted with EU law. Article 8 included a provision which mandated that any party initiating an investor-state dispute governed under the Dutch-Slovak BIT bring the dispute in front of an arbitration tribunal. Since this form of investor-state dispute resolution was customary in the EU, states and investors became concerned about what the future of investment arbitration would look like in the EU. As a solution, the EU proposed the implementation …

Read But Not Understood? An Empirical Analysis Of Consumer Comprehension In Homeowners Insurance, Daniel Benjamin Schwarcz, Brenda Cude, Kyle D. Logue, German Marquez Alcala Jan 2026

Read But Not Understood? An Empirical Analysis Of Consumer Comprehension In Homeowners Insurance, Daniel Benjamin Schwarcz, Brenda Cude, Kyle D. Logue, German Marquez Alcala

Articles

Modern contract law assumes that consumers meaningfully assent to the standard forms that govern their daily lives. However, this assumption is widely regarded as a legal fiction for two key reasons: first, most consumers do not read standard forms, and second, even those who do often struggle to fully comprehend their terms and implications. Although the lack of consumer reading has been well documented through empirical research, consumers’ ability to comprehend standard-form contracts has received surprisingly little attention.

This Article addresses the latter issue by empirically examining whether providing excerpts from the dominant standard-form homeowners insurance policy improves consumer understanding …

The State Of Interprofessional Practice Between Behavior Analysts And Speech-Language Pathologists, Sara Snyder, Heartley Huber, Danika Pfeiffer, Dannette Murray Jan 2026

The State Of Interprofessional Practice Between Behavior Analysts And Speech-Language Pathologists, Sara Snyder, Heartley Huber, Danika Pfeiffer, Dannette Murray

Speech-Language Pathology Faculty Publications

Interprofessional practice (IPP) is necessary to ensure assessment and interventions are designed and implemented both efficiently and effectively. We sought to investigate how Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) engage in IPP. Both professionals may provide evaluations and interventions related to communication in schools and community-based healthcare systems. We disseminated a survey to BCBAs and SLPs to elicit information about their collaboration with each other. Topics included: (a) frequency of collaboration and communication with the other professional; (b) confidence engaging in IPP; (c) interprofessional training experiences; (d) barriers and facilitators to collaboration with the other profession; and …

Ai Is Not A Natural Monopoly, Simon Goldstein, Peter N. Salib Jan 2026

Ai Is Not A Natural Monopoly, Simon Goldstein, Peter N. Salib

Minnesota Law Review Headnotes, Vols. 107 onward (2022-present)

Economists and antitrust scholars have recently warned that the AI industry may be a natural monopoly. In support of this claim, they have argued that the AI industry shares key features with natural monopolies of the past: First, like railroads, AI has high fixed and low marginal costs. That is, training a frontier AI is expensive, but asking it a question is cheap. Next, like social media, AI companies will benefit from network effects. The more users a company has, the more training data they can collect. This leads to better models, then more users, and so on. Finally, some …

Setting The Recycling Narrative: A Thematic Analysis Of Recycling Webpages In The United States, Haley Nolde Jan 2026

Setting The Recycling Narrative: A Thematic Analysis Of Recycling Webpages In The United States, Haley Nolde

Dissertations and Theses

Recycling is widely promoted in the United States as a central strategy for waste diversion and sustainable materials management, yet recycling outcomes remain inconsistent and public understanding is often fragmented. While substantial research examines recycling behavior, infrastructure, material science, and markets, less attention has been paid to how recycling itself is framed and communicated to the public. This thesis addresses that gap by examining narratives produced by recycling thought leader organizations (TLOs) in the United States. Using thematic analysis, this study analyzes publicly available recycling webpages from 99 TLOs, including state government agencies, state-level non-governmental organizations (NGOs), national and regional …

Climate Lies And Unjust Profits, Vanessa Casado-Pérez, Yotam Kaplan, Yael Lifshitz, Niv Meyerson

Emory Law Journal

The climate crisis has reached a dangerous tipping point. Our dependence on fossil fuels continues largely unchecked, reinforced by corporations that use their influence to block reform and protect their profits. At the same time, the federal government has dismantled critical environmental safeguards, including by rescinding the greenhouse gas endangerment finding and rolling back vehicle emission standards. Together, these actions threaten to strip away some of the last protections standing between us and escalating climate catastrophe.

In this grim landscape, communities across the nation are turning to the courts with renewed urgency, seeking justice and reform through climate litigation. Yet, …

Consumer Perceptions Of Farmers Market Performance: A Comparative Analysis Across States And Age Groups, Azita Varziri, Timothy A. Woods, Shuoli Zhao Jan 2026

Consumer Perceptions Of Farmers Market Performance: A Comparative Analysis Across States And Age Groups, Azita Varziri, Timothy A. Woods, Shuoli Zhao

Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service has invested in direct-to-consumer initiatives to expand local food consumption and enhance farmers market opportunities. To evaluate the effectiveness of these efforts, this study employs a sample-selected ordered probit model to analyze consumer perceptions of farmers market performance across four states in the Southeast United States. Specifically, we examine differences in awareness and performance of product quality, diversity, and market infrastructure. Awareness and perceptions vary significantly by age, other demographics, and state. These insights provide market organizers and policymakers with data-driven strategies to tailor marketing efforts and improve engagement across diverse consumer segments.

Not For A Profit., Taylor Wiens Jan 2026

Not For A Profit., Taylor Wiens

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

My body of artwork explores the deep-rooted traditions and emotional resonance of life on a three-generation family farm. By merging my expertise in graphic design, ceramics, printmaking, and glaze research, I have developed a unique method of printing on clay with underglazes, creating layered and nostalgic imagery that tells the heartfelt stories of my farm family. My inventive forms—tiles, architectural structures reminiscent of farm buildings, portraits, and figures—capture the overlooked yet essential aspects of rural life, portraying both the relentless challenges farmers face and the profound sense of belonging and tradition inherent in farm life.

Earth toned clay represents the …

An Analysis Of The Dpa And False Claims Act In The United States V. Colas Djibouti Case, Sophie Perret Jan 2026

An Analysis Of The Dpa And False Claims Act In The United States V. Colas Djibouti Case, Sophie Perret

Dissertations and Honors Papers

This thesis examines the February 2021 dual enforcement action against Colas Djibouti SARL - a Deferred Prosecution Agreement resolving criminal wire fraud charges and a parallel civil settlement under the False Claims Act - arising from the supply of substandard concrete and falsified laboratory results on United States Navy construction contracts at Camp Lemonnier, Republic of Djibouti. It argues that the resolution is at once a doctrinal success and a structural failure. Doctrinally, the case illustrates the expanding reach of U.S. federal enforcement over foreign subsidiaries operating in high-risk jurisdictions: the wire fraud statutes supplied jurisdiction where territorial principles would …
