Keeping Children Safe: Bring Kayden's Law To Ohio, Christina Woods-Tsiperson Jan 2026

Keeping Children Safe: Bring Kayden's Law To Ohio, Christina Woods-Tsiperson

Akron Law Review

After decades of punishing murder-suicide headlines, a growing body of evidence now corroborates what female domestic violence survivors have said for years: that family courts deciding child custody cases disproportionately reject mothers’ allegations of domestic violence and paternal child abuse. From prominent legal scholars to local family law attorneys (and increasingly, investigative reporters), many modern voices contend that mothers specifically face a litany of obstacles in court, including heightened judicial suspicion that they are “parental alienators,” a widespread minimization of coercive control, and state legal standards that  emphasize shared parenting over child safety.

Following the widely publicized murder of seven-year-old …

The Law Through The King U.S. (Procedural) Judicial Activism From A European Perspective, Cesare Cavallini Jan 2026

The Law Through The King U.S. (Procedural) Judicial Activism From A European Perspective, Cesare Cavallini

Akron Law Review

This essay explores the phenomenon of judicial activism in the United States, focusing particularly on procedural aspects, from a comparative perspective influenced by the civil law tradition, especially the Italian legal system. While American legal discourse often criticizes judicial activism as an overreach by the judiciary—sometimes calling it “imperialist” in relation to recent Supreme Court decisions—this work reinterprets the concept through the more subtle mechanisms of procedural intervention. I argue that activism should not be viewed solely through the lens of constitutional interpretation or resistance to precedent. It should also consider judicial actions that reshape procedural norms, such as pleading …

Using Film Clips To Teach Public Choice Economics: Take Two Jan 2026

Using Film Clips To Teach Public Choice Economics: Take Two

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

Recent years have seen a trend away from "chalk and talk" toward alternative pedagogical approaches to teaching economics. Media clips, in particular, have been touted as a way to provide students with memorable and exciting exposure to economic concepts. Media clips are especially well-suited for teaching public choice economics because of the plethora of films and television shows depicting government activity. This paper documents how clips from popular movies and series such as "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and "House of Cards" can be used to teach public choice economics.

Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care

Objectives: We developed a novel cardiac critical care bootcamp consisting of didactic, small-group and simulation sessions. The bootcamp was remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic and included telesimulation. We aimed to assess learners’ reactions to the bootcamp and their perception of telesimulation. Methods: Paired anonymous surveys were administered before and after participation. Surveys assessed participants’ comfort in independently managing cardiac critical care scenarios, perceptions of telesimulation, barriers to its effectiveness, and specific feedback on course components. Results: Forty-three fellows from 10 institutions joined the bootcamp over two years. 38 pre- and 28 post-course surveys were completed. The course was rated …

Techniques For Qr-Enabled Card Capture For Mobile Payments, Dileep R. Dominic

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to a method for facilitating secure card-not-present (CNP) mobile payments through the use of a physical payment card embedded with an encrypted QR code. The QR code encodes essential cardholder data, including a primary account number (PAN) and expiry date. The method involves recognizing a designated input field on a mobile device while accessing a payment gateway interface. An interface module displays a camera icon adjacent to the input field, enabling a scanning procedure that utilizes a native camera application to read the QR code. This scanning process automatically populates the input field with the decoded …

A Method And Payment System For Preventing Card Skimming During Payment Transactions, Binayak Biswas Jan 2026

A Method And Payment System For Preventing Card Skimming During Payment Transactions, Binayak Biswas

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to a method and payment system for preventing card skimming during payment transactions. The method involves generating a dynamic PIN token using a secret key and transaction-specific data. The dynamic PIN token is transmitted via a near-field communication (NFC) interface from a mobile device or contactless card to a point-of-sale (POS) terminal. This token is verified at a verification network utilizing the same secret key and transaction-specific data to confirm the authenticity of the payment transaction. Upon successful verification of the dynamic PIN token, the payment transaction is executed, ensuring that the token is unique for …

Dynamic Channel Selection Via Persistent Client-Side State Mapping, Abhishek Prasad Jan 2026

Dynamic Channel Selection Via Persistent Client-Side State Mapping, Abhishek Prasad

Defensive Publications Series

Manual channel selection can be required when a user signs into a primary account with multiple corresponding profiles on a content sharing platform, provided that no default profile is configured. This results in redundant user prompts and inefficient use of network resources through additional round-trip requests. This disclosure relates to dynamically selecting an active channel based on historical activity on a specific client device. The identity of the last active channel used on the client device can be stored using authentication data (e.g., an encrypted state cookie). When a subsequent sign-in is initiated, the state cookie can be retrieved and …

Lived Experiences Of Law Enforcement Officers Assigned To Co-Response Teams Responding To Mental Health Crises, Roxanne Miller Jan 2026

Lived Experiences Of Law Enforcement Officers Assigned To Co-Response Teams Responding To Mental Health Crises, Roxanne Miller

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Law enforcement officers are increasingly called upon to respond to mental health crises, yet their experiences as members of co-response teams (CRTs) remain underexplored. This study was conducted to address that gap by examining the lived experiences of officers assigned to CRTs that pair specially trained officers with mental health clinicians to respond jointly to calls involving individuals in crisis. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to describe how officers experience CRT work and how it shapes their perceptions, practices, and professional identity. The study was guided by Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional theory of stress, appraisal, and coping, …

Investigating Sex Offenders’ Experience Of Being Registered As A Sex Offender, Stacey Mitchell-Swingle Jan 2026

Investigating Sex Offenders’ Experience Of Being Registered As A Sex Offender, Stacey Mitchell-Swingle

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In society, sex offenders are subject to unforeseen consequences of the sex offender registry. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate how the sex offender registry contributes to the mental distress of registered sex offenders and their concerns about recidivism. This study addressed a gap in understanding the sex offender registry experiences from the offender’s perspective. The research question addressed how adult male registrants describe their experiences of mental distress associated with registration and how they perceive registration as shaping their risk of reoffending. The theoretical framework was John Braithwaite’s reintegrative shaming theory, with a specific focus on …

Impact Of Burnout And Empathy On Correctional Officers’ Aggression, Sagan Ladd Jan 2026

Impact Of Burnout And Empathy On Correctional Officers’ Aggression, Sagan Ladd

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Correctional officers experience persistent occupational stress that places them at elevated risk for burnout, which may negatively affect emotional functioning and increase aggression. Guided by general strain theory, this quantitative nonexperimental correlational study examined the relationships between burnout, empathy, and aggression among uniformed correctional officers working in U.S. jails and prisons. Participants (N = 58) completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire–Short Form through an anonymous online survey. Simple and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to answer three research questions. Results indicated that burnout significantly predicted aggression, F(1, 56) = 12.38, p < .001, R² = .18, such that higher burnout was associated with higher aggression scores. Empathy did not significantly predict aggression, F(1, 56) = 2.32, p = .133, R² = .04, though the relationship trended negatively. A multiple regression analysis revealed that burnout and empathy together significantly predicted aggression, F(2, 55) = 7.74, p = .001, R² = .19; however, burnout remained the only significant predictor when controlling for empathy. Additional analyses indicated that burnout significantly predicted all four facets of aggression: verbal aggression, physical aggression, anger, and hostility. These findings suggest that burnout plays a central role in aggression among correctional officers and highlight the importance of organizational and mental health interventions aimed at reducing burnout to promote staff well-being and institutional safety.

Graduates’ Perceptions Of Their High School Career Technical Education Work-Based Learning Experiences, Cheryline M. Hewitt

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Little is known about how career and technical education (CTE) work-based learning (WBL) programs support student academic achievement and workforce outcomes. Guided by Kolb’s experiential learning theory, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore high school graduates’ perceptions of their CTE WBL experiences and to identify how completing a CTE WBL program supported and hindered their academic and workforce achievement. Ten graduates of CTE WBL programs were recruited via postsecondary CTE school outreach, Facebook, and LinkedIn groups and participated in a semistructured interview. Thematic analysis using open coding was conducted. The data analysis resulted in three identified …

Issa Rae and Quinta Brunson are redefining what it means to tell Black stories on screen. Through shows like Insecure and Abbott Elementary, they elevate Black joy, community, and offer narratives that reflect the culture. With a rise in diverse female voices in media, Black female producers have emerged as cultural powerhouses telling stories beyond trauma and stereotype.
