Experience And Response To Disability Stigma In South Asian Communities, Sudha Krishnan Mar 2026

Experience And Response To Disability Stigma In South Asian Communities, Sudha Krishnan

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

This qualitative study explored the experiences of stigma and responses to stigmatization among 13 South Asian parents of children with extensive support needs (ESN). Existing research indicates that students with intellectual disabilities often experience negative emotions such as shame, powerlessness, and frustration due to their disability status. Cultural beliefs significantly influence the experiences of disabled children and their families, with stigma perceived and felt differently across cultural groups. Participants were interviewed about their family and cultural beliefs, perceptions of disability, and experiences with school collaborations and social stigma. Thematic analysis revealed that South Asian families with children with ESN faced …

Ymca Changes Lives: Social Media Campaign, Savannah Nicole Rivera

Communication Studies

This project examines how the YMCA of San Luis Obispo constructs its organizational identity through digital messaging by applying framing theory (Entman, 1993). Drawing from scholarship on framing, nonprofit organizational identity, dual-identity tensions, and nonprofit storytelling, I conduct an applied framing analysis of the YMCA’s website and Instagram content. Specifically, I analyze how the organization defines community problems, attributes causes to them, assigns moral values to them, and proposes solutions in its messaging. I argue that while the YMCA references its mission, its current digital communication often makes utilitarian identity elements, such as services, memberships, and facilities, more salient than …

A Framework For Biological Weapons Deterrence, Center For The Study Of Weapons Of Mass Destruction

Research and Case Studies

The United States faces a growing range of biological threats, including the potential use of increasingly sophisticated biological weapons. As advances in science and technology expand the scope of these risks, deterring biological attacks has become an urgent national security challenge. This study examines the U.S. Government's current approach to biological weapons deterrence, assesses existing tools and capabilities, and identifies key challenges to developing a more effective strategy. Drawing on research, expert interviews, and roundtable discussions, the paper argues that deterring biological threats requires a coordinated whole-of-government approach that integrates the capabilities and expertise of multiple federal agencies. This NDU …

Pirated Ai Training Data And The Future Of Recovery For Creatives, Cassie Anderson Mar 2026

Pirated Ai Training Data And The Future Of Recovery For Creatives, Cassie Anderson

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

The explosive growth of generative AI necessarily relies on near-limitless amounts of creative works, such as books, articles, music, and art for training. Data sourcing and training practices advanced by large technology companies have defaulted to piracy, which presupposes unfettered access to high-quality creative data at minimal cost. In a growing number of markets, generative AI presents an appealing alternative to human-made creative works—an alternative that directly competes with the very human creatives whose works are necessary to power such technology. Facing mass-scale piracy and creative markets diluted by AI content, creative professionals are in an even more precarious position …

A Synthetic Marketplace: Rethinking First Amendment Theory In The Age Of Ai-Generated Video, Jared Schroeder, Heesoo Jang Mar 2026

A Synthetic Marketplace: Rethinking First Amendment Theory In The Age Of Ai-Generated Video, Jared Schroeder, Heesoo Jang

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

First Amendment theory is unprepared for the synthetic-media era. AI-generated videos, which fundamentally portray events and actions that never happened, are changing the ways people construct reality in fundamental ways. These believable videos raise substantial concerns about foundational assumptions of First Amendment theory, particularly the marketplace of ideas. Synthetic videos challenge citizens to discern truth from falsity in new ways. These challenges are multiplied by the nature of video, which scholars have noted audiences find uniquely believable. This article examines First Amendment theory, as well as the nature of video, ultimately contending that the rationales the Supreme Court has traditionally …

Between Expression And Restraint: Reconciling First Amendment Protections With Antitrust Enforcement In Social Media Advertising, Michael Patton Mar 2026

Between Expression And Restraint: Reconciling First Amendment Protections With Antitrust Enforcement In Social Media Advertising, Michael Patton

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

The contemporary advertising ecosystem is increasingly dominated by social media platforms, prompting advertisers to devote substantial resources to these venues and, in many cases, to coordinate their efforts through umbrella organizations. When these organizations recommend that members withdraw or redirect advertising away from specific platforms, the line between coordinated market behavior and protected expressive conduct becomes blurred. A pending lawsuit by a major social media company alleges that such a coordinated refusal to deal constitutes an unlawful group boycott rather than protected First Amendment activity. Although the Supreme Court has developed frameworks for distinguishing between expressive boycotts and anticompetitive conduct, …

At The Crossroads: Sports Betting In Missouri And Proposals For Regulations, Jimin Shumate Mar 2026

At The Crossroads: Sports Betting In Missouri And Proposals For Regulations, Jimin Shumate

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

Sports betting is a rapidly growing industry nationwide, and Missouri became the 39th state to legalize the practice. Although states hope to reap the benefits of a regulated sports gambling market, the activity carries significant mental, physical, and socioeconomic risks due to its inherently addictive nature. The hyper-accessibility of modern platforms, particularly those enabling unlimited micro betting, magnifies longstanding concerns in a new digital context. Compounding these risks, the absence of federal standards for minimum wagering ages and the aggressive marketing strategies employed by sportsbooks draw in young adults. This article proposes a coordinated federal and state regulatory framework that …

Beyond The Prompt: The Social Costs Of Generative Artificial Intelligence, J. Scott Christianson, Josh Rickard Mar 2026

Beyond The Prompt: The Social Costs Of Generative Artificial Intelligence, J. Scott Christianson, Josh Rickard

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

The rapid commercialization of generative artificial intelligence has produced extraordinary value for technology companies while systematically externalizing costs onto society. This Article provides a review of these externalities across three domains: environmental, human health, and digital infrastructure. The environmental burden includes massive energy and water consumption alongside ecologically destructive mining for rare earth elements and accelerating electronic waste. The human toll encompasses a documented pattern of AI-induced mental health crises, including suicide and self-harm linked to anthropomorphic chatbot design, raising novel questions of product liability in cases like Garcia v. Character.AI. The digital commons face degradation through industrialized data scraping …

Stress Management And Resilience Among Students Enrolled In The Entry Level Master Of Science In Nursing (Elmsn) Program, Pius Omolewa, Adekemi Adedipe, Nassrine Noureddine, Destiny Roberts

All Faculty Scholarship

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of mindfulness exercises on stress management and resilience among ELMSN students. Methods: The study was a quasi-experimental design that used a paired samples t-test to compare pre-test and post-test of students’ scores on both GAD-7 anxiety screening tool and short version of Grit-scale. Statistical tests were conducted with significance set at p < 0.05 (two-sided). All analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics, version 31.0 to compare pre-/post-test scores, determine differences, and statistical significance of interventions among the cohort. And a priori power analysis was conducted to determine the required sample size for a paired samples t-test. With an alpha level of 0.05 and a medium effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.50), a total sample size of N = 34 was determined to be sufficient to achieve a power of 0.80. Results: A convenience sample of 40 students (35 females and 5 males) participated in the study. Students had more anxiety before mindfulness exercises (M = 7.00, SD = 5.5) compared to after the mindfulness exercises (M = 6.2, SD = 3.4), t(39) = 1.41, p = 0.17. The effect size was small, d = 0.22. However, the difference in the students’ anxiety levels after the mindfulness exercises was not statistically significant, with a p-value of 0.17. On the resilience, students were less resilient before mindfulness exercises (M = 3.58, SD …

A Diffuse Interface Model And Fully Decoupled, Energy-Stable Scheme For The Two-Phase Ferrofluid Flows In Porous Media, Guo Dong Zhang, Shuai Zhou, Yunqing Huang, Xiaoming He, Xiaofeng Yang Mar 2026

A Diffuse Interface Model And Fully Decoupled, Energy-Stable Scheme For The Two-Phase Ferrofluid Flows In Porous Media, Guo Dong Zhang, Shuai Zhou, Yunqing Huang, Xiaoming He, Xiaofeng Yang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a new diffuse interface model for two-phase porous media ferrofluid flows, employing the phase-field method and establishing an associated energy law. This thermodynamically consistent multi-physics model integrates the Cahn-Hilliard equations, Darcy equations, the magnetostatic equation, and magnetization equations. To efficiently solve the system by addressing its inherent nonlinearities, coupling, and saddle-point structure, we incorporate several advanced techniques, including the SAV-ZEC method to handle nonlinearities and couplings, a reformulated approach to decouple the linear coupling of the magnetic potential and magnetization, and the pressure projection method to decouple velocity and pressure. This results in a numerical scheme that is …

Some Things Are Actually Nails: The Value Of Randomized Experiments Across Legal Theories, Hajin Kim, Kevin Tobia, Kristen Underhill Mar 2026

Some Things Are Actually Nails: The Value Of Randomized Experiments Across Legal Theories, Hajin Kim, Kevin Tobia, Kristen Underhill

University of Chicago Law Review

Experiments sometimes get a bad rap. Critics allege that they don’t illuminate how the real world works, are subject to p-hacking and manipulation, and often don’t study the most important populations of interest. We examine historical uses of experiments to generate knowledge for legal academia. Recently, experiments have become associated with law and economics as part of a broader coupling of quantitative empirical work with law and economics. But experimentation is a highly adaptable, if imperfect, research method that can support causal claims and test assumptions that are useful across many legal theories, including law and political economy. We discuss …

The Road To The Abraham Accords: An Examination Of The Uae’S Role Transformation (2011-2020), Farida Elatriss, Moatamer Amin

Political Science

The normalization agreement signed between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the 15th of September 2020, signals a breakthrough in state relations. It transitioned Emirati Israeli relations from clandestine business collaborations directly to people-to-people normalization without prior cold peace agreements (Lemay-Hebert & Visoka, 2022, p. 133). It is noteworthy that this abrupt change in the UAE’s stance towards Israel takes place as part of a broader change that occurred in the Emirati foreign policy following the Arab Spring in 2011. The state started adopting a more interventionist foreign policy and a more active regional role (Ragab, 2017, p. …

Design And Validation Of A Wearable Respiratory Protection System For Wildland Firefighters, Oliver Pilon Mar 2026

Design And Validation Of A Wearable Respiratory Protection System For Wildland Firefighters, Oliver Pilon

Master's Theses

Wildland and Wildland–Urban Interface firefighters are routinely exposed to hazardous smoke with fine particulate matter, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and other toxic combustion products. Existing protective gear has significant limitations and shortcomings for these conditions. Respirators with tight-fitting facepieces make it difficult to breathe and speak. On the other hand, self-contained breathing apparatuses are too heavy, have a limited duration of use, and do not work well with long wildland fire scenes, while smaller protective equipment like N-95’s and gaiters provide very little protection. These constraints contribute to low adoption rates and prolonged occupational exposure.

This thesis presents the …

A Bacillus Pumilus Isolate With Promising Antimycobacterial Properties, Cody M. Pfaff Mar 2026

A Bacillus Pumilus Isolate With Promising Antimycobacterial Properties, Cody M. Pfaff

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens, particularly Mycobacterium tuberculosis, highlights the urgent need for new antimicrobial agents. Tuberculosis remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases, claiming over a million lives annually and posing increasing challenges due to the thick, lipid-rich, acid-fast cell wall of Mycobacterium species that renders them naturally resistant to many antibiotics. In this study, a soil sample collected from the Campus of Fort Hays State University yielded a bacterial isolate exhibiting strong antimicrobial activity. Initial screening against Escherichia coli MM294 showed a 10 mm inhibition zone, and subsequent testing identified the isolate as Bacillus pumilus …

Reason Enough: The Wrongful Extension Of Asylum’S “One Central Reason” Nexus Standard To Withholding Of Removal, Elaine Hernandez Flores Mar 2026

Reason Enough: The Wrongful Extension Of Asylum’S “One Central Reason” Nexus Standard To Withholding Of Removal, Elaine Hernandez Flores

Washington Law Review

Noncitizens often come to the United States seeking protection from violence, persecution, or life-threatening conditions in their home countries. However, upon arrival, many noncitizens are placed in removal proceedings and face deportation back to the very dangers they escaped. U.S. immigration law provides various forms of relief from deportation, most notably asylum and withholding of removal. Both forms require the applicant to show a connection—or “nexus”—between the persecutor’s motive for persecuting them and one of five protected grounds: race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.

Although asylum and withholding of removal both require a noncitizen …

The Gospel Of Glamour: A Christian Woman's Style Blueprint, Osaromwenyeke Osemwota Mar 2026

The Gospel Of Glamour: A Christian Woman's Style Blueprint, Osaromwenyeke Osemwota

Theses

The Gospel of Glamour: The Christian Woman’s Style Blueprint was a luxury-branded, sustainability-focused, faith-based style guide that addressed a gap in fashion, theology, and sustainability scholarship. Existing literature had either systematized fashion, explored the spiritual significance of dress, or examined sustainable and luxury practices—but none had integrated these dimensions into a prescriptive, actionable guide for Christian women. Drawing on Scripture as the foundational authority, including passages from Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, and Proverbs, the guide framed clothing as both practical provision and visible expression of covenantal identity. The style guide synthesized secular fashion methodology, modest-fashion scholarship, and sustainable luxury principles to …
