Coalition Building In Art Education: Holding Space, Redistributing Weight And Witnessing, Kathy J. Brown, Beth Link, Kendall Crabbe, Cheryl Boone

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Our coalition is made up of four art educators working across institutions of higher education. After encountering various racialized critical incidents, we began meeting virtually and in-person, to imagine new ways of navigating academic spaces. We are all cis women, two of us identify as Black, 2 as white, with varied ages and positions in academic institutions across the country. We gathered after the surge of Black Lives Matter protests and in the wake of a global pandemic. We gathered amid political backlash in the south as anti-CRT and DEI legislation dominated educational landscapes and abortion rights were curtailed. We …

Artist Statements As Colectiva: Informed By Lived Experiences And Anzaldúan Theories, Christen Sperry García, Elizabeth Gonzalez, Alexis Marie Ramos

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

As visual artists, our ability to explain process and convey meaning in our work is very important. Our BFA and MFA studio art programs trained us to write clear, concise, and universal artist statements. We were encouraged to highlight the concepts behind our visual work and discouraged from including our personal narratives or employing Chicane or Latine bodies of knowledge. In response, we apply theories and methodologies by Gloria Anzaldúa to our artist statements. First, we offer a framework of testimonio, Borderlands theory, and autohistoria-teoría. Using the methodology of nepantlando, a creative doing of existing in-between worlds, we …

Enhancing The Surface Integrity Of Gas Turbine Compressor Blades Using Alumina Abrasives In Magnetic Finishing: An Experimental Approach, Tahseen Salman, Saad Shather, Baraa Albaghdadi

Engineering and Technology Journal

Magnetic Abrasive Finishing (MAF) is a highly effective technique for enhancing the surface integrity of high-value components with complex geometries, owing to its non-contact, flexible, and precisely controllable nature. This study investigates the use of Al₂O₃ (alumina) powder as an abrasive medium in the MAF process, selected for its high hardness, thermal stability, and chemical inertness. Although Al₂O₃ is only weakly paramagnetic, it was successfully incorporated into the magnetic abrasive brush through mechanical blending with ferromagnetic particles that respond to the magnetic field. This hybrid abrasive system enables effective control of finishing forces, leading to significant improvements in surface quality …

Korean Words In The Oed: Race, Gender, And The Modern English Speaker, Elaine W. Chun

Faculty Publications

This article examines representations of the Modern English Speaker of Korean (MESK) in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), as lexicographers listened to and documented the language of this figure over the past century. I show that, until the early twenty-first century, the most salient type of MESK was the Koreanist, a white, masculine expert on and translator of Korean, the language of a racial other. By contrast, more recent Korean entries, influenced by the global spread of hallyu, have invoked the Korea Fan, a figure that potentially unsettles longstanding ideologies of language, race, and gender. Introduction – Carnets Filmiques, Carnets Sonores : Des Essais Intimes Et Collectifs, Robert Bonamy, Aude Fourel, Eve Le Fessant Coussonneau

Regards

Regards

After his mother’s death in 2017, Thanassis Vassiliou returned to Greece and began filming. The instinctive act of recording aimed both to come to terms with the now definitive absence in places still filled with memories, and to document his own reactions, attempting to preserve them even if he could not fully understand them. These filmic notes could perhaps, later on, allow another perspective, according to the dynamic that Antoine Compagnon aptly analyzed as paradoxical in relation to Barthes’s Mourning Diary: “mourning and narrative are antinomic, but [...] only narrative [...] is capable of expressing the experience of mourning, …

« From Ground Zero » Et « Letters » : Carnets Polyphoniques En Quête D’Intersubjectivité, Eve Le Fessant Coussonneau

Regards

The two polyphonic films From Ground Zero (2025, produced by Rashid Masharawi) and Letters (2025, produced by Josef Khallouf) bring together, in response to the war in Gaza, unique short films, letters and chronicles that address collective questions. How do these films take charge of the urgent need to problematize, aesthetically and politically, the relationship between subjectivity and the collective? From the Palestinian enclave or neighboring Lebanon, they seek irreducible singularities and intersubjective connections in the face of the horror of genocide. Caught in a complex combination of places and times, their address to our spectatorial gaze thus reveals the …

Le Vent Du Sud, « La Nuit Et L’Enfant » – Récit D’Une Vidéo-Correspondance Avec Zoheir Mefti, David Yon

Regards
