Global Issues Spanning Higher Education, Gary J. Burkholder, Erwin Krauskopf

Higher Learning Research Communications

We are pleased to publish the first regular issue (Volume 12, Issue 1) of Higher Learning Research Communications (HLRC) for 2022. While the pandemic waxes and wanes, students in many parts of the world are returning or have returned to face-to-face instruction. It will take some time to fully understand the impact of the pandemic on higher education and what lasting changes will result from it. The Special Issue, Education Technologies and COVID-19: Experiences and Lessons learned, for which we are continuing to review manuscripts, should provide some insight into this question. This letter also contains article summaries.

Open Educational Resources (Oer) Initiatives: Global And Indian Quo Vadis, Phulasmita Nath

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Galloping speed of technological development and intense research activities in ICT over last couple of decades has facilitated opportunities of rapid expansion in creation, distribution and consumption of educational resources across the world. While fulcrum motivational factor for such technological advancement is indeed profit driven, a substantial gain has also been drawn by academic communities using the same set of technologies for greater social good. Open Source Software, Creative Commons, Open Access Initiatives have paved the way for Open Educational Resources (OER). With these impetuses, nations are trying to bridge the gaps between information have and haven’t and reduce the …

Epigenetic variation plays a significant role in normal development and human diseases including cancer, in part through post-translational modifications (PTMs) of histones. Identification and profiling of changes in histone PTMs, and in proteins regulating PTMs, are crucial to understanding diseases, and for discovery of epigenetic therapeutic agents. In this study, we have adapted and validated an antibody-based reverse phase protein array (RPPA) platform for profiling 20 histone PTMs and expression of 40 proteins that modify histones and other epigenomic regulators. The specificity of the RPPA assay for histone PTMs was validated with synthetic peptides corresponding to histone PTMs and by …

Defamation Of Public Figures: Is New York Times Outdated?, Michael S. Grimsley

Florida Journal of International Law

The balancing of freedom of speech and the protection of personal reputation has been the subject of litigation for many years. The law of defamation of public figures was finally settled by the United States Supreme Court in 1964 with its landmark holding in New York Times v. Sullivan. In New York Times, Justic Brennan held that public officials could recover for defamation only upon showing that their defamers knew or should have known that their statements were false. This standard has been upheld for over thirty years. Recently, however, the ruling in New York Time has been …

Impact Of Student Debt On Decisions Of Terminal Clinical Education Experiences In Physical Therapist Education, Jennifer W. Rodriguez, Whitney Davidson, R Joseph Palmer Iii, Mary Jane Rapport

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Student debt is of growing concern in physical therapy and other health professions in the United States. This study explored the extent to which finances and other factors influenced student decision making when applying to and selecting terminal clinical education experiences. Methods: An online survey was developed and distributed to 250 recent graduates of a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (2016-19). A logistic regression model was used to determine the relationship between respondents’ reported student debt and other factors when choosing a nontraditional model (the yearlong internship model (YLI)/residency model) or the traditional 4-month model. A 5-point Likert scale …

Best Practices For Social-Emotional Learning In Early Childhood And Elementary Classrooms, Danielle Kelley Jun 2022

Best Practices For Social-Emotional Learning In Early Childhood And Elementary Classrooms, Danielle Kelley

Graduate Teacher Education

Social-emotional learning has existed for many years and the body of research surrounding it increasingly shows its effectiveness. Although SEL curriculums are available, they are often too expensive for school districts to purchase. This paper analyzed SEL best practices so positive behavior and classroom engagement increase. Some elements commonly emerged through quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods research for consideration as best practices. Included themes are a positive teacher-student relationship and positive student-student interactions. Once relationships were established, explicitly teaching a social skill then reinforcing with positive feedback and a game proved to be effective in increasing both behavior and classroom engagement. …

"But I'M Not An Engineer"...Collaboration Between A Librarian And An Upper Division Project-Based Engineering Program, Heidi J. Southworth, Rebecca Bates, Robert Sleezer

Library Services Publications

Since 2013, a librarian at Minnesota State University, Mankato has collaborated with faculty and students in an upper division project-based engineering program. While having several years of experience in university libraries plus advanced degrees in history, the librarian had a limited background in science, engineering, and technology, and lacked a formal engineering degree. At first glance, this match may appear to be a recipe for failure. Indeed, in those first few years, the librarian’s angst about the missing engineering degree caused many sleepless nights of worry and concern. However, there came a time when the words “but I am not …

No One Can Whistle A Symphony: Analyzing Growth In Proficiency For English Learners In Coteaching, Debra Ann Cole Jun 2022

No One Can Whistle A Symphony: Analyzing Growth In Proficiency For English Learners In Coteaching, Debra Ann Cole

Dissertations

K-12 ELs in the U.S. are increasing in number and diversity (Park, et al., 2018), requiring schools to establish and grow language instruction education programs (LIEPs) that facilitate language acquisition for a wide range of learners, while also providing equitable opportunities to learn. The study used a quantitative, pretest-posttest, research design to address gaps in the literature noted by Takanishi & Menestrel (2017), regarding which LIEPs are most effective for various EL subgroups, and to explore the effects of Coteaching for ELs (COTEL) on growth in proficiency. Data from 723 ELs in two Midwestern districts was disaggregated three ways to …

The high uptake of COVID-19 vaccines is one of the most promising measures to control the pandemic. However, some African American (AA) communities exhibit vaccination hesitancy due to mis- or disinformation. It is important to understand the challenges in accessing reliable COVID-19 vaccine information and to develop feasible health communication interventions based on voices from AA communities. We conducted 2 focus group discussions (FGDs) among 18 community stakeholders recruited from 3 counties in South Carolina on 8 October and 29 October 2021. The FGDs were conducted online via Zoom meetings. The FGD data were managed and thematically analyzed using NVivo …
