Quietly Encouraging Saudi Arabia’S Transient Economy, Austin H. Hardman
Quietly Encouraging Saudi Arabia’S Transient Economy, Austin H. Hardman
Pepperdine Policy Review
The Saudi government has made tremendous progress in liberalizing its economy. The Saudi legal system is more business friendly now than ever and many of the legislative changes have occurred in just the past 5 years. Economic obstacles preventing Americans from further investing in Saudi Arabia’s private sector have largely been resolved in theory. This is good news for U.S. policy makers. Economic modernization is believed to bring regional and domestic stability. However, Saudi Arabia has been trending towards becoming a more authoritarian regime. The Saudi Royal authority has supplanted powers allocated for religious authority in the name of economic …

Development Of Cooperative Catalytic Systems And Bimetallic Catalysts For Organic Synthesis, Kelton Guy Forson
Development Of Cooperative Catalytic Systems And Bimetallic Catalysts For Organic Synthesis, Kelton Guy Forson
Theses and Dissertations
The development of new catalysts for organic synthesis is an important pursuit that enables the discovery of new and more efficient reactions and the identification of new reaction mechanisms. Cooperative catalytic systems and bimetallic catalysts represent unique approaches to catalyst development that achieve reactivity that cannot be obtained with a single catalyst or metal. These types of catalysts can activate substrates in unique ways, facilitate reactions under mild conditions, increase substrate scope, and provide access to completely new transformations. The first part of this work describes the development of a cooperative nickel-titanium-catalyzed amination of allylic alcohols. The cooperative effects of …

Exploring Interaction Through The Online Language Instructor Lens: Perceptions, Strategies, And Challenges, Jessica Krentzman
Exploring Interaction Through The Online Language Instructor Lens: Perceptions, Strategies, And Challenges, Jessica Krentzman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As our world becomes more interconnected, our learning environment and interactions continue to evolve, moving away from face-to-face meetings, toward online discussions using various forms of interaction. In the online learning environment, instructors now need to swiftly pivot their methods of instruction in order to assure student success in the online learning environment and to achieve this goal, instructors need concrete instructional and design strategies to support student interactions. To this end, I explored how online language instructors currently promote interaction in their courses, how the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework applies to their selection of instructional strategies, the instructors’ …

"I'M Very Enlightened:" Assisting Black Males Involved In The Criminal Justice System To Deal With And Heal From Racism, Darnell Jackie Strong
Dissertations and Theses
Black Males who have offended face major challenges stemming from their involvement in the Criminal Justice System. Once involved it is hard to get out, as exhibited by high recidivism rates and mass incarceration, issues that have plagued Black Males since slavery. There is little research on interventions to ameliorate the effects of racism on this population.
The aim of this research was to: a) create a training to help Black Males who have been involved in the Criminal Justice System deal with racism and b) evaluate the intervention. This mixed methods research utilized Constructivist Grounded Theory and Afrocentric theory …
Transcriptome Analysis Of The Entomopathogenic Fungus Culicinomyces Clavisporus, Dana E. Foresman
Transcriptome Analysis Of The Entomopathogenic Fungus Culicinomyces Clavisporus, Dana E. Foresman
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Culicinomyces clavisporus is an entomopathogenic fungus that can infect mosquito larvae, such as Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti, and Anopheles stephensi. Whereas most fungal entomopathogens infect hosts through the cuticle, C. clavisporus initiates infection through ingestion. This suggests that the C. clavisporus genome may be mined for novel pathogenicity factors with the potential for vector control. To this end, a transcriptome analysis was initiated. The strain C. clavisporus ARSEF 582 was grown in modified PYG liquid cultures that was supplemented with whole, insect larvae (Galleria mellonella) to elicit the expression of genes involved in host-pathogen relationships. Total RNA …

French-Fried Potato Consumption And Energy Balance: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Daniel L Smith, Rebecca L Hanson, Stephanie L Dickinson, Xiwei Chen, Amy M Goss, John B Cleek, W Timothy Garvey, David B Allison
Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications
Background: Epidemiologic observations suggest increased potato consumption correlates with weight gain, adiposity, and diabetes risk, whereas nut consumption is associated with weight control and metabolic health. Randomized controlled trial (RCT) data indicate humans respond to changes in energy intake in single dietary components and compensate for extra energy consumed.
Objectives: We completed an RCT testing whether increased daily potato consumption influences energy balance [specifically, fat mass (FM)] compared with calorie-matched almond consumption.
Methods: A 30-d RCT of 180 adults prescribed calorie-matched (300 kcal/d, n = 60 participants/group) than consumed 1 of the following: 1) almonds (almond group), 2) French fries …

Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The University of Omaha math department's Problem of the Week was taken over in Fall 2019 from faculty by the authors. The structure: each semester (Fall and Spring), three problems are given per week for twelve weeks, with each problem worth ten points - mimicking the structure of arguably the most well-regarded university math competition around, the Putnam Competition, with prizes awarded to top-scorers at semester's end. The weekly competition was halted midway through Spring 2020 due to COVID-19, but relaunched again in Fall 2021, with massive changes.
Now there are three difficulty tiers to POW problems, roughly corresponding to …

The De Minimis Dilemma: A Bedeviling Problem Of Definitions And A New Proposal For A Notice Rule, Matthew C. Lucas
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
This article will discuss the de minimis doctrine in light of its current (and often varied) application in several important cases. While the focus will remain on infringements occurring in electronic media, the application of the analysis is by no means limited to that area alone. This article concludes by proposing the addition of a notice rule within the current copyright scheme. This rule would bar a would-be infringer from raising a de minimis defense once access to the copyrighted work at issue has been conclusively proven. The notice rule would encourage early negotiation of an optimal licensing arrangement between …

Personal Jurisdiction And The Internet: Can The Traditional Principles And Landmark Cases Guide The Legal System Into The 21st Century?, Mark C. Dearing
Personal Jurisdiction And The Internet: Can The Traditional Principles And Landmark Cases Guide The Legal System Into The 21st Century?, Mark C. Dearing
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
As the Internet advances and develops as a more acceptable means of global communication and commerce, the issue of personal jurisdiction becomes an area of increasing importance. With more commercial activity occurring on the Internet, businesses and individuals alike must be cautious and prepared regarding their potential liability. By merely creating a web site and placing information and/or goods on the Internet, the party responsible for that web site (the web host) is potentially exposed to worldwide liability. Because the traditional personal jurisdiction cases originate in the pre-Internet era, courts must determine the appropriate tests and analyses for personal jurisdiction …

"It's Our Way Or The Highway": Americans Ruling Cyberspace - A Look Back At Bad Policy And A Look Ahead At New Policy, Brian Berlandi
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
Network Solutions Inc. (“NSI”) and its respective policies are no longer capable of effectively and efficiently managing the Internet. Proper management must now be turned over to an international body that can fairly administer to the needs of Internet users worldwide. However, establishing this new administrative body, whose policies must be created through equal representation of global interest groups, will be no easy task. Not only will a global consensus be difficult to reach, but the element of time is of particular importance as well. With only four months remaining in NSI’s contract, the global Internet community must act expediently. …
Trademarks, Internet Domain Names, And The Nsi: How Do We Fix A System That Is Already Broken, Michael Tanner
Trademarks, Internet Domain Names, And The Nsi: How Do We Fix A System That Is Already Broken, Michael Tanner
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
This paper will focus upon how the current race to establish an Internet presence, has created numerous disputes over the use, the ownership, and the registration of domain names, as well as increased the potential for liability for possible infringement of corporate trademarks. The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on how current policies regarding Internet domain name registration impairs certain trademark holders and effectively prevents them from using the Internet as a global communication medium. This paper has four parts: section one details the history of the Internet, and the structure of both domain names and …

The Great Internet Panic: How Digitization Is Deforming Copyright Law, Anne K. Fujita
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
In this paper, the balance between the rights of authors, publishers and users will be explored to see how the technology affects their particular interests, and how various laws tip the balance of their rights in different directions. This paper also includes an analysis of two recent proposals for adapting copyright law to the new technology. One is a report released in September 1995 by the Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights, a subcommittee of the Clinton Administration’s Information Infrastructure Task Force, titled “Intellectual Property and the National Information Infrastructure,” but more commonly referred to as the “White Paper.” The …
International Licensing Of Intellectual Property: The Promise And The Peril, Nicolas S. Gikkas
International Licensing Of Intellectual Property: The Promise And The Peril, Nicolas S. Gikkas
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
This paper is about the promise that intellectual property holds for generating wealth from international trade. The U.S. government and U.S. corporations have employed various means to secure the benefits of selling intellectual property abroad. The most flexible and useful method of transferring this form of property is the licensing agreement. However, for a licensing agreement to work, the intellectual property must first be recognized as “property” to be protected by law by the countries of both the licensor and the licensee. Not all countries recognize and protect intellectual property. This paper discusses the perils associated with licensing intellectual property …

Comparing Regulatory Models — Self-Regulation Vs. Government Regulation: The Contrast Between The Regulation Of Motion Pictures And Broadcasting May Have Implications For Internet Regulation, Jeffrey A. Jacobs
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
A model of regulation is being developed in response to the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996. That model could be based on the motion picture industry’s system of self-regulation, which may at first seem to be less threatening to the First Amendment rights of the Internet users. On the other hand, the Internet regulatory model could be modeled on the broadcast industry’s system of federal regulation through an administrative agency like the FCC—a choice many people immediately associate with censorship and government interference in private conversations and transactions. The purpose of this article is to examine the development …
The Constitutionality Of The Communications Decency Act: Censorship On The Internet, David L. Sobel
The Constitutionality Of The Communications Decency Act: Censorship On The Internet, David L. Sobel
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
On March 21, a special three-judge federal court panel in Philadelphia began hearing testimony in a proceeding to determine the constitutionality of the Communications Decency Act (“CDA”). The statute enacted as part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, criminalizes the transmission of “indecent” and “patently offensive” material via the Internet in a manner that makes it available to minors. Judicial review of the CDA is destined to result in a landmark Supreme Court decision defining, for the first time, the applicability of the First Amendment to emerging interactive communications media. As the courts begin to grapple with this complex issue, …
Ambulance Chasers On The Internet: Regulation Of Attorney Web Pages, Mark Hankins
Ambulance Chasers On The Internet: Regulation Of Attorney Web Pages, Mark Hankins
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
Since the U.S. Supreme Court in 1977 decided Bates v. State Bar of Arizona, attorney advertising, once anathema to the profession, has become tolerated, if not entirely welcome fixture of the landscape. Regulations of attorney advertising have passed the intermediate scrutiny of the Supreme Court on a number of occasions with a recent Supreme Court victory of the Florida Bar over an advertising attorney defining the outer limits of permissible attorney conduct in targeted direct mail advertising. Debate continues on the effect of advertising on the profession. Many argue persuasively that its added economic pressures are converting the practice …

Unsafe At Any [Modem] Speed: Indecent Communications Via Computer And The Communications Decency Act Of 1996, Jay Alan Sekulow, James Matthew Henderson Sr.
Journal of Technology Law & Policy
A computer equipped with a modem for communications truly gives one an eye on the world. With a computer and a modem, access to the Internet is relatively simple, and access to the Internet means access to an immense amount of information. Nor is the Internet merely a giant, online library. The Internet serves as the communications medium for literally tens of thousands of global conversations, political debates, and social dialogues.
With such capacity, a computer with a modern for accessing the Internet is understandably considered a great good. Educators rightly have recommended equipping students with the means to take …

Disciplinary Faculty Needs And Qualified Tutors In An Efl University Writing Center, Graciela Arizmendi González, María Del Carmen González Videgaray
The Writing Center Journal
This study investigates postgraduate (PGs) and faculty needs concerning academic writing (AW) tutors’ qualifications in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. Tutors are the core element of a writing center (WC) (Hays, 2010). These professionals listen to (Burns, 2014), advise, and exchange information (Reid, 1993, in Hays, 2010) collaboratively so students can resolve their writing issues (Hays, 2010). However, in EFL contexts, scant research exists about WCs, writing programs (Molina & López, 2019), and qualifications to recruit tutors (Özer, 2020). Thus, to plan a WC, 24 participants in chemistry were interviewed and surveyed. Findings reveal that EFL PGs …
