Jostling For Space In Africa’S Business Periphery: A Review Of The Growing Competition Between Indigenous And Chinese-Owned Enterprises, Steve Kayizzi-Mugerwa Jun 2022

Jostling For Space In Africa’S Business Periphery: A Review Of The Growing Competition Between Indigenous And Chinese-Owned Enterprises, Steve Kayizzi-Mugerwa

Southern African Journal of Policy and Development

This paper reviews recent research and related studies on the ongoing competition between Chinese and local entrepreneurs in the lower rungs of Africa’s business sector. Several studies have noted that since entry, Chinese firms have been able to undercut African entrepreneurs, thanks to superior networks and better financing. However, other findings portray more positive impacts of Chinese presence, including higher employment and tax revenues, and better supply of goods and services. It is possible to surmise that this jostling for space in Africa’s business periphery will not last. Ultimately, it must yield to changes in the host countries’ political economy …

Towards A Computational Model Of Narrative On Social Media, Anne Bailey Jun 2022

Towards A Computational Model Of Narrative On Social Media, Anne Bailey

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This thesis describes a variety of approaches to developing a computational model of narrative on social media. Our goal is to use such a narrative model to identify efforts to manipulate public opinion on social media platforms like Twitter. We present a model in which narratives in a collection of tweets are represented as a graph. Elements from each tweet that are relevant to potential narratives are made into nodes in the graph; for this thesis, we populate graph nodes with tweets’ authors, hashtags, named entities (people, locations, organizations, etc.,), and moral foundations (central moral values framing the discussion). Two …

Torsh: Obfuscating Consumer Internet-Of-Things Traffic With A Collaborative Smart-Home Router Network, Adam Vandenbussche Jun 2022

Torsh: Obfuscating Consumer Internet-Of-Things Traffic With A Collaborative Smart-Home Router Network, Adam Vandenbussche

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

When consumers install Internet-connected "smart devices" in their homes, metadata arising from the communications between these devices and their cloud-based service providers enables adversaries privy to this traffic to profile users, even when adequate encryption is used. Internet service providers (ISPs) are one potential adversary privy to users’ incom- ing and outgoing Internet traffic and either currently use this insight to assemble and sell consumer advertising profiles or may in the future do so. With existing defenses against such profiling falling short of meeting user preferences and abilities, there is a need for a novel solution that empowers consumers to …

A Novel Electroconductive Nanofibrous Scaffold For Bone Regeneration, Mitchell Kenter Jun 2022

A Novel Electroconductive Nanofibrous Scaffold For Bone Regeneration, Mitchell Kenter

Medical Engineering Theses

The goal of this study was to develop a biodegradable and conductive scaffold to mimic the piezoelectric properties of bone and the architecture of the extracellular matrix. Poly(3,4- ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is a conductive polymer of great interest in tissue engineering due to excellent electrical stability and biocompatibility. To enhance its conductivity, dopants such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) can be added. Engineered graphene oxide (GO) can also be introduced as oxidant to enhance conductivity and mechanical properties. PEDOT nanocomposites were synthesized by oxidative polymerization of 3, 4-Etylenedioxythiophene monomer (EDOT) in the presence of GO, DMSO, ferric chloride and various solvents. The …

From Emergency Remote Teaching (Ert) To Sustained Remote Teaching (Srt): A Comparative Semester Analysis Of Exchange Students’ Experiences And Perceptions Of Learning Online During Covid-19, William H. Stewart, Youngkyun Baek, Patrick R. Lowenthal Jun 2022

From Emergency Remote Teaching (Ert) To Sustained Remote Teaching (Srt): A Comparative Semester Analysis Of Exchange Students’ Experiences And Perceptions Of Learning Online During Covid-19, William H. Stewart, Youngkyun Baek, Patrick R. Lowenthal

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The COVID-19 pandemic caused universities worldwide to close campuses, forcing millions of teachers and students to resort to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) and learning. Though necessary, the sudden move to remote delivery marked a significant departure from the standards and norms in distance education. In Korea, the pandemic coincided with the start of the 2020 academic year. Though ERT was new and unplanned during the first semester of the year, it became Sustained Remote Teaching (SRT) in the second. Through the lens of performance improvement theory, we sought to determine if students’ experiences and perceptions with learning remotely via SRT …

Expérimentation De Genres Médiatiques Par Les Pure Players En Afrique, Sokhna Fatou Seck-Sarr Jun 2022

Expérimentation De Genres Médiatiques Par Les Pure Players En Afrique, Sokhna Fatou Seck-Sarr

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The article is part of the work on media changes induced by digital technologies. He postulates that the offbeat editorial approaches of African pure players are part of an objective of legitimization and that the methods of digital writing integrate economic logics. The analysis of generic journalistic genres (flash, surveys, interviews), offbeat genres (satire, rapped newspaper) and digital genres (fact-checking , data journalism) shows that the fact of alternating formats results from an objective of legitimation, of a competitive game but also of capturing the audience. Ultimately, it makes it possible to grasp the editorial, identity and economic logics that …

Peur, Médias Et Gouvernement En Afrique, Alexie Tcheuyap Jun 2022

Peur, Médias Et Gouvernement En Afrique, Alexie Tcheuyap

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article examines the theoretical and practical interconnectedness that crosses fear, media and governing practices. It uses examples from African countries, especially Cameroon, to investigate the ways in which the media are instrumentalized to draw on fear of the Other in general and of opposition leaders in particular in order to support authoritarian regimes. Not only does it focus on the structural changes that lead to a more subtle media control in spite of an apparent liberalization, but it also further describes the discursive devices used to generate and perpetuate fear.

Micro-Rna Analysis Of Extracellular Vesicles Secreted By Alveolar Macrophages And Epithelial Cells In Response To Cadmium, Anisha Bhakta Jun 2022

Micro-Rna Analysis Of Extracellular Vesicles Secreted By Alveolar Macrophages And Epithelial Cells In Response To Cadmium, Anisha Bhakta

Biotechnology Theses

Inhalation of cadmium (Cd) has been an environmental health concern with the increase in industrial activities and smoking. Cd exposure is known to affect several organs such as lungs, kidneys, and liver. In this study, we wanted to understand if Cd inhalation exposure can affect the lungs and other organs in the body. Exosomes are extracellular vesicles secreted by all living cells and are known to carry toxicants between organs. We investigated whether Cd exposure could affect exosome biogenesis and their composition. Cd exposure did not affect the viability of A549, a lung epithelial cell line and macrophages derived from …

Automation And Apocalypse: Imagining The Future Of Work, Michael Paulus Jun 2022

Automation And Apocalypse: Imagining The Future Of Work, Michael Paulus

SPU Works

This chapter provides an orientation to the history of technology, work, and the theology of work and then explores three visions of the future of work—a literary dystopia, a philosophical utopia, and a theological apocalypse—as resources for understanding the significance of work and imagining its future. In the first vision, found in Kurt Vonnegut’s speculative novel Player Piano, automation leads to the end of meaningful work and nearly renders humans obsolete. This dystopic vision reveals the value of human work but remains skeptical about our ability to preserve it against the advances of automation. The second vision comes from …

Responsible Sourcing And Supply Chain Traceability, Jen-Yi Chen Jun 2022

Responsible Sourcing And Supply Chain Traceability, Jen-Yi Chen

Business Faculty Publications

This paper explores a buyer's tracing and its supplier's own sourcing decisions in a multi-tier supply chain. We explore what different stakeholders can do to achieve a more transparent and/or responsible supply chain. We establish that under rather general conditions, the two firms will adopt mixed strategies in equilibrium, a focal case of our analysis. The mixed-strategy results first explain at the micro level why many companies are not certain about whether their supply chains are ethical or not. At the more macro level, they also help explain why a significant proportion of the buyers did not trace or comply …

Retooling Sanctions: China’S Challenge To The Liberal International Order, Timothy Webster Jun 2022

Retooling Sanctions: China’S Challenge To The Liberal International Order, Timothy Webster

Chicago Journal of International Law

Professor Tom Ginsburg has produced yet another classic of transnational law, political science, and international relations. Democracies and International Law yields important insights into the democratic nature of international law but cautions that authoritarian states can apply these very legal technologies for repressive or antidemocratic purposes. Building on Ginsburg’s theories of mimicry and repurposing, this contribution highlights the role of both techniques in the creation of China’s economic sanctions program. On the one hand, China has developed a basic set of tools to impose economic sanctions—a key instrument in the liberal international toolkit—on foreign entities and persons. In so doing, …

Cross-Issue Correlation Based Opinion Prediction In Cyber Argumentation, Md Mahfuzer Rahman, Xiaoqing "Frank" Liu, Joseph W. Sirrianni, Douglas J. Adams Jun 2022

Cross-Issue Correlation Based Opinion Prediction In Cyber Argumentation, Md Mahfuzer Rahman, Xiaoqing "Frank" Liu, Joseph W. Sirrianni, Douglas J. Adams

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the challenging problems in large scale cyber-argumentation platforms is that users often engage and focus only on a few issues and leave other issues under-discussed and under-acknowledged. This kind of non-uniform participation obstructs the argumentation analysis models to retrieve collective intelligence from the underlying discussion. To resolve this problem, we developed an innovative opinion prediction model for a multi-issue cyber-argumentation environment. Our model predicts users’ opinions on the non-participated issues from similar users’ opinions on related issues using intelligent argumentation techniques and a collaborative filtering method. Based on our detailed experimental results on an empirical dataset collected using …

Working In Space: The Final Frontier Of Remote Work, Alyson Clare Decker Jun 2022

Working In Space: The Final Frontier Of Remote Work, Alyson Clare Decker

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual workplaces have become much more common. But while advancements in technology have made remote work more accessible for many employees, jurisdictional confusion and varying state-specific employment regulations have made it extremely difficult for employers to switch from traditional in-person office settings to work-from-anywhere workplaces. In addition, taxation and mandatory workers’ compensation insurance requirements mean that employers often need to be registered to do business in any state they have employees in, making a truly remote workforce somewhat of a misnomer. However, as difficult as it might be for terrestrial employers to navigate our patchwork …

A Feminist Analysis Of Pelvic Exam Violence, Maya Parekh Jun 2022

A Feminist Analysis Of Pelvic Exam Violence, Maya Parekh

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Gynecological violence is a pervasive global issue, though it has long been broadly neglected withinmedical institutions. One site of such violence is the pelvic exam. This thesis examines the issue of pelvic exam violence, mainly pelvic exams that are conducted by medical students on unconscious individuals without prior consent for training purposes. Utilizing a critical discourse analysis of medical journal articles written about pelvic exams and consent, this paper argues that the arguments of both proponents and opponents of explicit consent within the medical field uphold dominant power paradigms of racism and patriarchy within medical institutions and education. Additionally, while legislation …
