Towards Targeted Delivery To Cns Neurons By Conquering The Bbb, David G.A. Bengford Jun 2022

Towards Targeted Delivery To Cns Neurons By Conquering The Bbb, David G.A. Bengford

Bioengineering Master's Theses

Brain cancer treatments have long been restricted by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Semi-permeable in the most selective way, this barrier may be crossed by one of three methods: membrane integrity disruption, passive transport, or active transport. The third option offers the opportunity for many medically relevant cargoes, such as proteins and nucleic acids, to be shuttled into the brain. The concept of a therapeutic “Trojan horse” builds on this capability by employing engineered nanovesicles—in this work, engineered exosomes—whose surfaces are studded with ligands functioning as the keys to crossing the BBB. Exosomes are a powerful methodology for this approach because …

Immuno-Anti-Infective Drug Design Using Bioai, Cathy Chen, Vivian Zhang

Bioengineering Senior Theses

According to the World Health Organization, antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today. A growing number of infections, like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, are becoming harder to treat as the antibiotics used to treat them become less effective. As a result, the primary concern for infections in the hospital setting is due to the S. aureus’s growing resistance to antibiotics. Therefore, in response to this global health threat, our project focuses on furthering the research in developing a drug that S. aureus will not develop resistance to. In this paper, we assess …

3d Patient-Derived Tumor Models To Recapitulate Pediatric Brain Tumors In Vitro., Min D Tang-Schomer, Harshpreet Chandok, Wei-Biao Wu, Ching C Lau, Markus J Bookland, Joshy George

Faculty Research 2022

Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children. Tailored therapies need preclinical brain tumor models representing a wide range of molecular subtypes. Here, we adapted a previously established brain tissue-model to fresh patient tumor cells with the goal of establishing3D in vitro culture conditions for each tumor type.Wereported our findings from 11 pediatric tumor cases, consisting of three medulloblastoma (MB) patients, three ependymoma (EPN) patients, one glioblastoma (GBM) patient, and four juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma (Ast) patients. Chemically defined media consisting of a mixture of pro-neural and pro-endothelial cell culture medium was found to support better growth than …

Factors Influencing The Popularity Of Animation Series And Movies Among Chinese Audience On Online Video Websites, Shengyi Chen

Fordham Dissertations and Theses

Since 2010, online video platforms and computer animation technologies have been developing at an accelerated speed around the world. More and more animation works were produced by computers and then broadcast through new media, especially the online video platforms. With the help of computer technologies and the promotional effect of new media platforms, animation, a traditional art form, is gaining popularity among the youth around the world.

At the same time, animation producers often face a very real and challenging task – to decide whether to invest money in an animation program only with the script, a crude character …

Copyright Protection For Works In The Language Of Life, Nina Srejovic

IPIPC Papers & Reports

In 2001, the DNA Copyright Institute sought to capitalize on the fear of human cloning by offering celebrities the opportunity to use copyright to secure exclusive rights in their DNA. At the time, a Copyright Office spokesperson pointed out that a person’s DNA “is not an original work of authorship.” That statement is no longer self-evident. A scientist claims to have used CRISPR technology to create a pair of twin girls with human-altered DNA that may provide immunity to HIV infection and improved cognitive function. Through gene therapy, doctors can “author” changes to patients’ DNA to cure disease. Scientists “edit” …

Impact Of Heat Stress On Expression Of Wheat Genes Responsive To Hessian Fly Infestation, Jiazheng Yuan, Jordan O’Neal, Daria Brown, Lieceng Zhu Jun 2022

Impact Of Heat Stress On Expression Of Wheat Genes Responsive To Hessian Fly Infestation, Jiazheng Yuan, Jordan O’Neal, Daria Brown, Lieceng Zhu

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Heat stress compromises wheat (Triticum aestivium) resistance to Hessian fly (HF, Mayetiola destructor (Say)). This study aimed to investigate the impact of heat stress on transcript expression of wheat genes associated with resistance to HF infestation under normal and heat-stressed conditions. To this end, ‘Molly’, a wheat cultivar containing the resistance gene H13, was subjected to HF infestation, heat stress, and the combination of HF infestation and heat stress. Our RNA-Seq approach identified 21 wheat genes regulated by HF infestation under normal temperatures (18?C) and 155 genes regulated by HF infestation when plants were exposed to 35?C for 6 h. …

Attorneys, E-Discovery, And The Case For 37(G), Marilyn G. Mancusi Jun 2022

Attorneys, E-Discovery, And The Case For 37(G), Marilyn G. Mancusi

Notre Dame Law Review

There are currently various sources of authority that federal courts can invoke to sanction attorneys who bungle their e-discovery obligations, but each is insufficient. All fifty states have their own rules authorizing courts within the state to refer misbehaving attorneys to the local disciplinary body, but each state’s rule is different, leading to much inconsistency and lack of uniformity among the federal courts. The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (“FRCP”) address e-discovery abuse but do not authorize courts to impose sanctions on attorneys for their role in e-discovery abuse. This is a problem because attorneys have ethical and professional obligations …

Motivating Positive Youth Outcomes Through Proximal, Relevant, And Attainable Inspirational Figures, Johanna S. Quinn, E. Danielle Roberts, Wei-Lin Chen, Rachel Doubledee, Jennifer Brown Urban, Miriam R. Linver

Sociology Faculty Publications

This paper focuses on data from a study of middle- to upper-middle class Scottish S2 (~seventh grade) students who participated in Inspiring Purpose, a school-based character development program, during the 2016 to 2017 school year. Directed by their teachers, participating youth reflected on values and future aspirations and researched and wrote about an inspiring person. We examine the hypotheses that youth who select a more proximal inspiring figure and/or make a personal connection with that person will demonstrate higher developmental outcomes in the areas of confidence, contribution, self-reflection, goal development, and self-concept. We connected 230 student posters of inspirational figures, …
