Ai And Writing: Do We Speak The Words Of Stochastic Parrots?, Kenneth C. Arnold
Ai And Writing: Do We Speak The Words Of Stochastic Parrots?, Kenneth C. Arnold
ACMS Conference Proceedings 2022
Generative Artificial Intelligence systems have recently and publicly become increasingly comparable to the capabilities of many humans in some domains, such as text and image generation. These systems are rapidly being incorporated into human contexts, for example as phone keyboards and email apps offer us AI-generated suggestions of words and even complete phrases to enter with a single tap or swipe. But these suggestions don’t just reduce physical effort; they reduce cognitive effort: we can accept a suggested phrase before even thinking about what to say. In this article, I first describe how mimicry pervades the design and implementation of …
The Default Network And Autism Spectrum Disorder: Characterizing Sub-Networks And Behavioral Correlates, Alyssa K. Kozlowski
The Default Network And Autism Spectrum Disorder: Characterizing Sub-Networks And Behavioral Correlates, Alyssa K. Kozlowski
Theses and Dissertations
The default network (DN), and specifically its sub-networks default network A (DN A) and default network B (DN B), has been strongly implicated in social cognition. This study examined its role in predicting social behavior, and also differences that may exist across diagnostic groups that may explain discrepancies in social cognition and behavior. One of the popular methods of study is functional connectivity, or analyzing correlated activity in the brain. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disorder characterized by social impairment and abnormal social behavior. To date, much of the functional connectivity research in ASD has focused on global connectivity, …
Analysis Of A Full-Stack Data Analytics Solution Delivering Predictive Maintenance To A Lab-Scale Factory, Nathan Wesley Hoyt
Analysis Of A Full-Stack Data Analytics Solution Delivering Predictive Maintenance To A Lab-Scale Factory, Nathan Wesley Hoyt
Theses and Dissertations
With the developments of industry 4.0, data analytics solutions and their applications have become more prevalent in the manufacturing industry. Currently, the typical software architecture supporting these solutions is modular, using separate software for data collection, storage, analytics, and visualization. The integration and maintenance of such a solution requires the expertise of an information technology team, making implementation more challenging for small manufacturing enterprises. To allow small manufacturing enterprises to more easily obtain the benefits of industry 4.0 data analytics, a full-stack data analytics framework is presented and its performance evaluated as applied in the common industrial analytics scenario of …

Neighborhood Predictors Of E-Cigarette Retailer Density In New York City, Laena Orkin-Prol
Neighborhood Predictors Of E-Cigarette Retailer Density In New York City, Laena Orkin-Prol
Dissertations and Theses
Background: The rampant expansion of the e-cigarette market over the last decade in the U.S. is a threat to the health of the public—due to the e-cigarette’s appeal to young people, addictiveness, and harms of consumption. It is vital to study the distribution of e-cigarette retailers of different types in major urban centers, such as New York City (NYC), to identify if certain neighborhoods are overburdened with retailers and if intervention is required. The current research on the e-cigarette retailer environment is limited in its scope and methods used.
Objective: To investigate neighborhood attributes associated with e-cigarette retailer density in …

What if people had the ability to assert their own legally binding permissions for data collection, use, sharing, and retention by the technologies they use? The IEEE P7012 has been working on an interoperability specification for machine-readable personal privacy terms to support this ability since 2018. The premise behind the work of IEEE P7012 is that people need technology that works on their behalf—i.e. software agents that assert the individual’s permissions and preferences in a machine-readable format.
Thanks to a grant from the IEEE Technical Activities Board Committee on Standards (TAB CoS), we were able to explore the attitudes of …

Midfoot Motion And Stiffness: Does Structure Predict Function?, Kirk Evans Bassett
Midfoot Motion And Stiffness: Does Structure Predict Function?, Kirk Evans Bassett
Theses and Dissertations
In clinical settings, dynamic foot function is commonly inferred from static and passive foot measurements; however, there is little evidence that static foot structure can predict dynamic foot function during walking gait. Previous research seeking to find correlations between the two have focused primarily on sagittal plane midfoot angles even though the midfoot has triplanar motion, which misses potentially important information. Additionally, the focus on kinematics alone may miss the contributions that forces play in midfoot mechanics. To address the angle limitations, a novel Signed Helical Angle (SHA) was developed to capture the triplanar motion of the midfoot from a …
A Direct-Read, A Posteriori Golden Copy Method For Measuring Soc Cache Upsets, Evan D. Poff
A Direct-Read, A Posteriori Golden Copy Method For Measuring Soc Cache Upsets, Evan D. Poff
Theses and Dissertations
A method for measuring system-on-a-chip (SoC) cache upsets is presented and evaluated. In contrast to methods that predict cache contents through analysis or memory access patterns, this method uses system registers to read cache memories directly, thereby creating and checking golden copies to detect individual memory upsets during operation. The test method is driven by the device under test itself and does not require a user to set or know a priori the cache contents. A bare-metal implementation of this “direct golden method” on a Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC logged upsets in the device’s data cache, data tag, and TLB RAM …

The Mars Sample Return (MSR) Campaign represents one of the most ambitious scientific endeavors ever undertaken. Analyses of the martian samples would offer unique science benefits that cannot be attained through orbital or landed missions that rely only on remote sensing and in situ measurements, respectively. As currently designed, the MSR Campaign comprises a number of scientific, technical, and programmatic bodies and relationships, captured in a series of existing and anticipated documents. Ensuring that all required scientific activities are properly designed, managed, and executed would require significant planning and coordination. Because there are multiple scientific elements that would need to …

The tumor microenvironment in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) involves a significant accumulation of fibroblasts as part of the host response to cancer. Employing single-cell RNA-sequencing, multiplex immunostaining, and several genetic mouse models, we identify carcinoma-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) with opposing functions in PDAC progression. Depletion of fibroblast activation protein (FAP)+ CAFs results in increased survival, in contrast to depletion of alpha smooth muscle actin (αSMA)+ CAFs that leads to decreased survival. Tumor-promoting FAP+ CAFs (TP-CAFs) and tumor-restraining αSMA+ CAFs (TR-CAFs) differentially regulate cancer-associated pathways and accumulation of Tregs. Improved efficacy of gemcitabine is observed when IL-6 is deleted from αSMA+ CAFs …

Of Pails And Buckets, Boxes And Bags, Peter Hertzmann
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
During the Second Industrial Revolution in America, the population shifted from being mostly rural to slightly more than half urban. Along with rearrangement came the situation that non-farm workers could no longer return home at midday to eat their dinner. The average laborer needed to carry his dinner with him to his worksite. The dinner pail (or dinner bucket) made this possible. As time progressed, dinner supplanted supper as the evening meal. Lunch became the noon meal. Likewise, the lunch box (lunch pail, lunch bucket, or lunch bag) replaced the dinner pail as the means of conveyance for the meal. …

Team dinners persist as an enduring tradition merging sport and food. Encompassing sportsmanship, superstition, and sometimes even classically trained chefs, team dinners are enjoyed by youth and professional athletes alike worldwide. However, the role and impacts of such rituals remain poorly understood. This paper contends that team dinners represent a unique gastronomic phenomenon that has lasting effects beyond sport. Given that sport and food are often both culturally entrenched and emotionally bound, team dinners are likely influential in molding adolescence athletes’ notions of nutrition, food choice, and acceptable dining behaviors. In the U.S., pre- and post-game dinners are used as …
Food And Movement In Modernist Art, Tricia Cusack
Food And Movement In Modernist Art, Tricia Cusack
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
From the late nineteenth century, the changing pace of “modern life”, with faster forms of transport and growing urbanisation, created a particular emphasis on motion, which some avant-garde artists sought to incorporate in painting. This project helped engender novel modes of representation such as Impressionism, Expressionism and Cubism, which became known collectively as “modernist”. This paper examines how modernist pictures of repasts and even “still lifes” were animated by a sense of the movement that was seen to be characteristic of modern life. It examines how a sense of movement in art could be generated by the interactions of figures, …
