Are The Vision Statements Of Fortune 50 Companies Convincing? You Can Make That Decision., James Schaap, Angel F. González

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The purpose of the study is to provide a background for describing and explaining organizational vision statements. The corporations selected were on the 2019 Fortune 500 list. Of that list, the researchers specifically looked at all revenues, net profits (as percentages), and vision statement word counts for the Fortune 50 companies—for 2019. The study also looked at the vision statement word counts for all Fortune 500 companies whose net profits were equal to or greater than the top performing Fortune 10 companies—for 2019. The findings show that the top 10 of the Fortune 50 companies have, on average, lower vision …

Tesla Vs. Its Stock Price: “Herd Theory” At Work?, Yun Cheng, Carroll Griffin Jun 2022

Tesla Vs. Its Stock Price: “Herd Theory” At Work?, Yun Cheng, Carroll Griffin

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

Since its inception in 2003, Tesla, Inc. has striven to be more than simply an electric automobile manufacturer. Since its first release in 2008 (the luxury Roadster), the company has introduced several additional high-end models as well as a much anticipated mid-priced model. Its vehicles consistently receive enthusiastic reviews from consumer analysts and industry publications alike. Perhaps as a reflection of its continued innovation and product-line expansion, as well as investor optimism regarding the company’s future prospects, its stock price has risen to extraordinary levels. However, despite all of this apparent success and highly-valued stock, Tesla has generated relatively little …

The Growth Of The Native American Gaming Industry: An Update, James Schaap, Angel F. González Jun 2022

The Growth Of The Native American Gaming Industry: An Update, James Schaap, Angel F. González

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

In the late 1970s, several Indian tribes established bingo operations to raise revenues to fund tribal governments. In 1987, in California v. Cabazon Band of Mission Indians, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld one of the most significant turning points for tribal governments: the legal right of Native American tribes to offer gaming on reservation lands, free of state interference. By 2001, gaming had become one of the fastest-growing sectors of the U.S. tourism industry. As of 2008, Indian gaming revenues topped $26.7 billion. The last few years have seen tremendous growth in the gaming industry, both in the number of …

2017 Tax Cuts And Corporate Investment And Financing Decisions: An Empirical Investigation, Rakesh Duggal Jun 2022

2017 Tax Cuts And Corporate Investment And Financing Decisions: An Empirical Investigation, Rakesh Duggal

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 1917 (TCJA) amended the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and significantly lowered the corporate tax rate, in addition to providing other tax incentives to spur corporate investments. The TCJA has the potential to impact corporate cash flows and corporate investment and financing decisions. In response to the TCJA, firms could enhance their capital expenditure budgets, return excess capital to shareholders, and/or hold excess capital for better opportunities in the future. Using S&P 500 firms as a sample, this study finds no statistical difference in the actual corporate taxes paid in the post-and pre-TCJA …

African American Law Firms And The Importance Of Strategic Advertising, Jamie Pleasant, Paul Brown Jun 2022

African American Law Firms And The Importance Of Strategic Advertising, Jamie Pleasant, Paul Brown

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

African American (AA) law firms in the 21st century have found themselves competing for market sustainability in a majority led industry that spends billions on advertisements (Li 2017). AA attorneys as a whole are continuously finding themselves collectively pouring millions of dollars in radio and television advertisements in order to acquire new clients to survive. Interestingly, no sound advertisement strategy is usually executed by these well intended but misguided law firms at the majority and minority levels and both types of firms end up spending a lot of valuable money in various media outlets that produce little or no positive …

The Glass Ceiling: Is It Being Shattered?, James Schaap Jun 2022

The Glass Ceiling: Is It Being Shattered?, James Schaap

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

The purpose of this descriptive and informative study is to determine whether women are breaking through the glass ceiling today in business. This informative report presents a synthesis of research from 63 writers over the past 25 years. We also wrote a brief review of 22 different commentaries about the glass ceiling. Although there is some evidence that the glass ceiling is cracking in many institutions, women continue to be under-represented in senior leadership. Many research articles continue to emphasize the need to reduce institutional bias through overhauling hiring and promotion practices and training awareness of implicit cognitive bias. Leader …

Competences Desired By Employers Of Human Resources Management In Louisiana: Implications For Improving Electronic Resumes For Job Seekers, Adelina Kaliba

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

A resume is a medium that summarizes job seekers’ competences, and it is the first item that captures an employers’ attention. Since most employers are using employment-related online search engines, to be matched with qualified applicants, resumes should contain keywords that are related to job descriptions. I analyzed descriptions of 1,059 human resources jobs advertised on indeed.com by employers located in Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Monroe, New Orleans, and Shreveportthe main metropolitan cities in Louisiana. I used different data exploratory and visualization techniques to summarize the data and then applied latent semantic analysis (LSA) to extract vocabularies that employers use …

Lysosomal Zn 2+ Release Triggers Rapid, Mitochondria-Mediated, Non-Apoptotic Cell Death In Metastatic Melanoma, Wanlu Du, Mingxue Gu, Meiqin Hu, Timothy Nold, Prateeksunder Pinchi, Wei Chen, Michael Ryan, Ahmed Bannaga, Haoxing Xu Jun 2022

Lysosomal Zn 2+ Release Triggers Rapid, Mitochondria-Mediated, Non-Apoptotic Cell Death In Metastatic Melanoma, Wanlu Du, Mingxue Gu, Meiqin Hu, Timothy Nold, Prateeksunder Pinchi, Wei Chen, Michael Ryan, Ahmed Bannaga, Haoxing Xu

Medical Student Research Symposium

During tumor progression, lysosome function is often maladaptively upregulated to match the high energy demand required for cancer cell hyper-proliferation and invasion. Here, we report that mucolipin TRP channel 1 (TRPML1), a lysosomal Ca2+ and Zn2+ release channel that regulates multiple aspects of lysosome function, is dramatically upregulated in metastatic melanoma cells compared with normal cells. TRPML-specific synthetic agonists (ML-SAs) are sufficient to induce rapid (within hours) lysosomal Zn2+-dependent necrotic cell death in metastatic melanoma cells while completely sparing normal cells. ML-SA-caused mitochondria swelling and dysfunction lead to cellular ATP depletion. While pharmacological inhibition or genetic silencing of TRPML1 in …

The Role Of Connective Tissue Growth Factor In Maintaining The Epithelial Phenotype Of Ovarian Cancer Cells During Epithelial-To-Mesenchymal Transition, Harry Ramos, Sandra Galoforo, Gil Mor, Radhika Gogoi Jun 2022

The Role Of Connective Tissue Growth Factor In Maintaining The Epithelial Phenotype Of Ovarian Cancer Cells During Epithelial-To-Mesenchymal Transition, Harry Ramos, Sandra Galoforo, Gil Mor, Radhika Gogoi

Medical Student Research Symposium

Objective: The transition from epithelial to mesenchymal is essential for the process of ovarian cancer (OC) metastasis. The aim of our study is to evaluate the role and mechanism of Connective Tissue Growth Factor (CTGF) in epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT).

Methods: R182 is an epithelial OC cell line. CTGF expression +/- Transforming Growth Factor -b (TGF-b) was determined via Western blot and ELISA. R182 CTGF knock out (KO) were derived utilizing a Cas9/CRISPR-Cas9 lentivirus plasmid vector. Anoikis resistance and invasion assays were performed to characterized phenotypes of R182 wild type (WT) and KO cells. For anoikis resistance, cells …

A Language For Specifying Rate Limits, Joel Trunick

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to a method and system for developing a language, which is specific for ‘rate limiting’ in digital transactions. The present disclosure uses a specific language to encode ‘rate limiting’ rules and conditions, such that the encoded language is in a readily understandable format and covers many different use cases for ‘rate limiting’. As a result, the present disclosure eliminates requirement of specific version of server and makes it possible to pass rules from one service to another in electronic format. Further, the users may be able to generate automated reports which is in an understandable format.

Automatic Control Of Lighting During Video Capture, Neil Hendin, Fei Wu Jun 2022

Automatic Control Of Lighting During Video Capture, Neil Hendin, Fei Wu

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes techniques to automatically optimize lighting conditions around a subject of a video or photograph to produce a better lit image. With user permission, ambient light conditions are analyzed by using image processing and machine learning and available light sources are adjusted to optimize the lighting of the scene. In contrast to traditional techniques that passively adapt to existing light conditions, the described techniques actively modify the light falling on the subject. Effectively, the techniques extend and improve AAA algorithms (auto exposure, auto white balance, autofocus) to include auto lighting. The techniques can be applied in any image …

HawaiʻI Is Not Your Escapist Fantasy: Varying Perspectives Surrounding Misconceptions And Representations Of HawaiʻI In The Tourism Industry, Shannon Hussey Jun 2022

HawaiʻI Is Not Your Escapist Fantasy: Varying Perspectives Surrounding Misconceptions And Representations Of HawaiʻI In The Tourism Industry, Shannon Hussey

Senior Theses

In this thesis, I argue that Hawai’i Tourism is dominated by idealized representations of paradise that are portrayed in hotels and resort advertising, selling an “authentic Hawaiian experience” that ignores significant parts of Hawaiian culture and the oppression of Native Hawaiians and local residents. The promotion of these exotified themes and images are seemingly used as a marketing scheme to attract consumers to view Hawai’i as merely a “tropical paradise” further adhering to individuals’ “escapist fantasy.” In delivering on this experience, the tourist industry reinforces and reifies the stereotypical images that are portrayed in the media. The systematic promotion of …

Assessing The Contribution Of Immigrants To Canada's Nursing And Health Care Support Occupations: A Multi-Scalar Analysis, Rafael Harun, Margaret Walton-Roberts Jun 2022

Assessing The Contribution Of Immigrants To Canada's Nursing And Health Care Support Occupations: A Multi-Scalar Analysis, Rafael Harun, Margaret Walton-Roberts

Social Work and Urban Studies Faculty Research

Background

The World Health Organization adopted the Global Strategy on Human Resources for Health Workforce 2030 in May 2016. It sets specific milestones for improving health workforce planning in member countries, such as developing a health workforce registry by 2020 and ensuring workforce self-sufficiency by halving dependency on foreign-trained health professionals. Canada falls short in achieving these milestones due to the absence of such a registry and a poor understanding of immigrants in the health workforce, particularly nursing and healthcare support occupations. This paper provides a multiscale (Canada, Ontario, and Ontario’s Local Health Integration Networks) overview of immigrant participation in …

The Public’S Case Against Dte Energy: Extracting Profits, Inducing Health Harms, And Damaging Democracy, Alex B. Hill, Bridget Vial, Aly Shaw, Gin Armstrong, Robert Galbraith

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Together with our partners, MEJC and LittleSis, We The People Michigan finds that DTE has extracted profit from its customers through hundreds of thousands of shutoffs, the second highest amount of rate hikes in the country, and unnecessary power outages that leave customers without power. They have invested heavily in new fossil fuel power plants that place significant health burdens on customers while blocking renewable energy initiatives. Finally, this report digs into the campaign donations of DTE executives, board members, and PAC to reveal how they utilize dark money to advance their profit-driven agenda.
