Wastewater-Derived Ammonia For A Green Transportation Fuel, Joseph Kalman, Maryam Haddad
Wastewater-Derived Ammonia For A Green Transportation Fuel, Joseph Kalman, Maryam Haddad
Mineta Transportation Institute
The energy-water nexus (i.e., availability of potable water and clean energy) is among the most important problems currently facing society. Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel that has the potential to reduce the carbon footprint in combustion related vehicles. However, ammonia production processes typically have their own carbon footprint and do not necessarily come from sustainable sources. This research examines wastewater filtration processes to harvest ammonia for transportation processes. The research team studied mock wastewater solutions and was able to achieve ammonia concentrations above 80%(nanofiltration) and 90% (reverse osmosis). The research team also investigated the influence of transmembrane pressure and flow …

Contracting Strategies: A Different Approach To Address Long-Term Performance, Maria Calahorra-Jimenez

For cost-efficiency, public safety, and sustainability, improving long-term performance in highway projects is imperative for public administrations. Project delivery and procurement methods provide an opportunity to align design and construction processes with this goal. While previous studies have explored whether project delivery methods impact the long-term performance of highway projects, these studies did not focus on how core elements within project procurement relate to long-term performance. Thus, to fill this gap, this research explores how and to what extent long-term evaluation criteria are considered in design-build best-value procurement of highway projects. To this end, the team conducted content analysis on …

The ubiquity of implicit feedback makes them the default choice to build modern recommender systems. Generally speaking, observed interactions are considered as positive samples, while unobserved interactions are considered as negative ones. However, implicit feedback is inherently noisy because of the ubiquitous presence of noisy-positive and noisy-negative interactions. Recently, some studies have noticed the importance of denoising implicit feedback for recommendations, and enhanced the robustness of recommendation models to some extent. Nonetheless, they typically fail to (1) capture the hard yet clean interactions for learning comprehensive user preference, and (2) provide a universal denoising solution that can be applied to …

Designing Flipped Learning Activities For Beginner Programming Course, Benjamin Gan, Eng Lieh Ouh
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This study focuses on designing flipped classroom learning activities across pre-class problem-based exercises; with in-class active discussions and practical problem-solving sessions; and follow up with postclass problem-based labs and assessments. We evaluate the effectiveness of our learning activities based on student surveys, course feedback, grades, and teacher feedback for a beginner programming course with non-IS students. We describe detail programming learning activities with comparisons to existing practices based on related work. Our findings are that majority of students (86%) agreed with flipped classroom, but teachers should be aware of the 14% who disagreed and cater for them. Teachers should avoid …

The high-risk human papillomaviruses infect basal epithelial stem cells within oropharyngeal or anogenital mucosal membranes and have been etiologically linked to uterine cervical dysplasia as well as to several HPV+ epithelial malignancies, including cervical squamous-cell carcinomas, vaginal, penile, and anogenital cancers, and certain subsets of head-and-neck/oropharyngeal cancers. Despite the widespread availability of multivalent preventive vaccines against the major hrHPV subtypes, more than 45,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States and the incidences of oropharyngeal and anogenital cancers have continued to increase, particularly, among HPV-infected subpopulations. The vegetative replication of the viral dsDNA genome …

Fair, Equitable, And Just: A Socio-Technical Approach To Online Safety, Daricia Wilkinson
All Dissertations
Socio-technical systems have been revolutionary in reshaping how people maintain relationships, learn about new opportunities, engage in meaningful discourse, and even express grief and frustrations. At the same time, these systems have been central in the proliferation of harmful behaviors online as internet users are confronted with serious and pervasive threats at alarming rates. Although researchers and companies have attempted to develop tools to mitigate threats, the perception of dominant (often Western) frameworks as the standard for the implementation of safety mechanisms fails to account for imbalances, inequalities, and injustices in non-Western civilizations like the Caribbean. Therefore, in this dissertation …
Private Meetings Between Firm Managers And Outside Investors: The European Paradigm, Giovanni Strampelli
Private Meetings Between Firm Managers And Outside Investors: The European Paradigm, Giovanni Strampelli
UC Law Business Journal
Institutional ownership of listed companies has grown significantly, leading to an increase in ownership concentration in the European Union. Under the current context of re-concentrated ownership, institutional shareholders are expected, also in Europe, to play a more active role in corporate governance and to exert influence on the company’s strategies. Within such a corporate governance landscape institutional investor engagement is becoming a distinctive feature of corporate governance of European listed companies. In particular, board-shareholder dialogue is a key engagement tool and is essential in order to enable institutional investors to fulfil their stewardship functions. Board-shareholder dialogue is also core to …

There is an ongoing debate in the legal academy about how and whether to integrate race into curricula. For people of color, race impacts their day-to-day lives in ways large and small. In the law school setting, the experience of students of color is often a fraught one. For many students of color, navigating law school is akin to walking a tight rope. This Essay attempts to highlight the myriad challenges facing students of color, and it offers some thoughts about how to create a more inclusive environment

Connecticut Law Review
Connecticut Law Review’s 2021 Symposium, titled “History and the Tulsa Race Massacre: What’s (the Law) Got to Do With It?” explored the legal and historical relevance of the Massacre. Following the Symposium, Connecticut Law Review Symposium Editors, Abby Booth and Joan Bosma, interviewed Professor Scott Ellsworth, a historian and leading scholar on the Massacre and a panelist at the Symposium. Professor Ellsworth provides a summary of the Massacre—including the events before and after the Massacre—and discusses the overwhelming lack of recognition that the Massacre has received in the last century.
For The Right Reasons: The Rules Of The Game For Institutionalists, Rick Joslyn
For The Right Reasons: The Rules Of The Game For Institutionalists, Rick Joslyn
Connecticut Law Review
The United States judiciary demonstrates better than any other constitutional institution the inherent fragility of American democracy. There is a reasonable debate to be had over when and exactly how the Supreme Court squandered the precious legitimacy on which its very existence rests. Yet, today, observers must confront with renewed urgency the impact crater of discontent that has been driven into the institution. The Court has been weaponized, politicized, and villainized; it has been lionized for its institutional heft. But increasingly loud voices have called for foundational reforms. There is a scramble for solutions to check the Court’s newly-emboldened right-wing …

Gen Z is defined as including persons born after 1996 and, in 2018, the first Gen Z would have been twenty-two years old, the historically traditional age that many complete undergraduate studies and enter law school. With Gen Z entering law schools, the legal academy has been wholeheartedly preparing for the arrival of the first truly digital native generation in a myriad of ways. However, law training has been slow to progress in addressing the unspoken complexities of context and unconscious bias in the classroom with this population. Today’s Gen Z students were predominately raised in de facto segregated schools …

The Effect Of Brand Crises On Endorser Reputation And Endorsement Portfolios, Clark D. Johnson, Brittney C. Bauer, Mark J. Arnold
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
We often hear about a brand dropping a celebrity after the endorser has negative publicity. However, endorsers are not the only ones who are responsible for negative news; many brands also generate negative publicity as well. The growing frequency of brand crises and the demonstrated relationship between brand‐ and endorser‐reputation begs the question: What impact might a severe brand crisis have on a celebrity endorser's reputation and endorsement portfolio? Study 1 finds that negative publicity only impacts the brand's moral reputation if internal locus attributions are made. In turn, moral reputation positively impacts attitudes toward the brand, endorser, and other …

Using Insurance To Regulate Food Safety: Field Notes From The Food Produce Sector, Timothy D. Lytton
Using Insurance To Regulate Food Safety: Field Notes From The Food Produce Sector, Timothy D. Lytton
New Mexico Law Review
Foodborne illness is a public health problem of pandemic proportions. In the United States alone, contaminated food sickens an estimated 48 million consumers annually, causing 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths. Nowhere is this crisis more acute than in the fresh produce sector, where microbial contamination in growing fields and packing houses has been responsible for many of the nation’s largest and deadliest outbreaks.
This Article examines emerging efforts by private insurance companies to regulate food safety on farms that grow fresh produce.
Previous studies of using insurance to regulate food safety rely on economic theories that yield competing conclusions. Optimists …
More Than #Freebritney: Remedying Constitutional Violations In Guardianship For People With Disabilities, Hannah Shotwell
More Than #Freebritney: Remedying Constitutional Violations In Guardianship For People With Disabilities, Hannah Shotwell
New Mexico Law Review
Adult guardianship is used as a method to restrict the decisionmaking rights of some individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities who have been deemed “incompetent.” However, the use of guardianship to remove someone’s decisionmaking rights violates the equal protection rights granted by the New Mexico Constitution. Discrimination against people with developmental disabilities must be substantially related to an important governmental interest, and the current state of guardianship fails to meet that bar. Further, guardianship violates the state constitutional guarantee of due process because it infringes on the fundamental right to the least restrictive means of care. New Mexico must adopt …

However, success is described as either the …
Athletics, Academics, And The Financial Condition Of U.S. Private Colleges, Jody W. Lipford, Jerry K. Slice
Athletics, Academics, And The Financial Condition Of U.S. Private Colleges, Jody W. Lipford, Jerry K. Slice
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Abstract
Many private colleges in the U.S. face financial difficulty. The role of athletics in the financial condition of U.S. colleges is subject to controversy. Supporters argue that collegiate sports draw students, improve student quality, and increase donor support. Detractors argue that athletics are costly and undermine the academic mission of the institution. In this paper, we examine metrics of athletic and academic quality to determine their effects on the financial health of a sample of U.S. private colleges. Our findings indicate that higher spending on athletics reduces an institution’s financial health and that academic quality increases an institution’s financial …

Efficiency Analytics Of Ncaa Division I College Football Programs, Frank A. Bouchet, Mike Troilo, Wen-Chyuan Chiang, Jennifer Shang
Journal of Applied Sport Management
College athletics are a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States, but how well do university athletic programs employ their resources? The question is germane in light of increasing costs of higher education and scrutiny of university budgets. This study furnishes a template to weigh the tradeoffs inherent in collegiate sports, which is the main contribution of the paper. A dataset of 117 American college football programs from 2011-2015 is analyzed using DEA and AHP methods to assess the efficiency and perception of these programs. The result is the aforementioned framework measuring the programs' success and answers the question of …

Thusly, marketers should leverage athletes’ talents and influence in creative ways to maximize their earning potential. This research explored the attributes of a marketable athlete, as well as promotional strategies to help secure athlete sponsorships. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with purposefully selected talent marketing practitioners with sport marketing agencies. The findings revealed relatable story, as well as perceived persona, as prevalent themes for a marketable athlete. Additionally, the themes of athlete-brand alignment and social media marketing were important to securing client promotion and sponsorships. These findings …

The Watts Gang Treaty: Hidden History And The Power Of Social Movements, William J. Aceves
Faculty Scholarship
On the eve of the 1992 Los Angeles uprising, a small group of gang leaders and community activists drafted an agreement to curtail violence in south Los Angeles. Several gangs in Watts accepted the truce and established a cease-fire agreement. By most accounts, the 1992 Watts Gang Treaty succeeded in reducing gang violence in Los Angeles. Local activists attributed the reduction in shootings to the Treaty. Even law enforcement officials grudgingly recognized the Treaty’s contribution to reducing gang violence and a corresponding decrease in homicides.
The origins of the Watts Gang Treaty can be traced to gang leaders recognizing that …
Appraisal Of The Success Of The Instruments Of International Commercial Arbitration Vis-À-Vis International Commercial Litigations And Mediation In The Harmonization Of The Rules Of Transnational Commercial Dispute Resolution, Samuel Maireg Biresaw
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This article compares the major instruments of International Commercial Arbitration (hereinafter ‘ICA’) with the instruments of International Commercial Litigation and Mediation. By so doing, the article comparatively assesses the success of ICA, litigation, and mediation as alternative mechanisms of transnational commercial dispute resolution. Accordingly, the article argues that, while the ICA is not the only means of transnational commercial dispute resolution, it will continue to be the most successful means of dispute resolution, playing the dominant role in harmonizing the rules of transnational commercial dispute resolution. However, the article also argues that, over time, transnational commercial litigation and mediation are …

Confronting Failure: Approaches To Building Confidence And Resilience In Undergraduate Researchers, Lisa A. Corwin, Louise K. Charkoudian, Jennifer M. Heemstra
Books
In this open-access book, authors from a range of disciplines--from geosciences to drama--capture how failure manifests and can be productively supported in a range of undergraduate research experiences. Whether the learning environment is a STEM research lab, a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE), a humanities summer undergraduate research experience, a library, or the stage, students can benefit from support when they experience a gap between an expected/desired result and their lived experience. These perspectives and disciplinary contexts address failure from different vantage points and lenses, with the common focal point of nurturing undergraduate success through leveraging failure as an opportunity …
Effects Of Surface Topography On Macrophages And Bacterial Cells, Joseph Carnicelli
Effects Of Surface Topography On Macrophages And Bacterial Cells, Joseph Carnicelli
Theses - ALL
An association has been found between the texture of breast implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma, which led to some textured implants to be withdrawn from the market in 2019. There is evidence that these cancers are associated with the harboring of bacteria on the surfaces of the textured implants. It is possible that specific topographic features hinder the removal of attached bacteria by inhibiting macrophage phagocytosis or promoting biofilm formation. Here we examine how bacteria and macrophages interact with recessive surface topographies as analogs to the surfaces seen on textured breast implants. Changes in bacteria morphology were observed among …
